during the 2018 regular season when looking at total games lost to injury. According to Twitter user @ManGamesLostNFL
Youth Frank Gore Jerseys , Buffalo lost only 85 games to injury this year. The Bills were joined in the bottom five by the Chicago Bears (97), Atlanta Falcons (107), New York Jets (136), and Los Angeles Rams (138).While Buffalo may have only lost 85 games to injury, they had enough players injured in key positions that those injuries definitely had a tremendous impact on their season. Losing starting quarterback Josh Allen for four games forced the team to start Nathan Peterman and the then-recently un-retired Derek Anderson for three of those games. In those three contests, Peterman and Anderson combined to go 75-for-121 (62%) for 676 yards (5.59 YPA), 0 touchdowns, and 7 interceptions. The two combined to lead the Bills to 5, 6, and 9 points in those three games, all blowout losses. The Bills also cycled through multiple punters on the season thanks to injury. Incumbent punter Colton Schmidt faced a challenge from rookie Cory Carter this summer, only to have the latter suffer a torn ACL in a pre-season game. Schmidt was replaced by Corey Bojorquez, who suffered a shoulder injury when he ran a fake field goal during a real field goal attempt. Bojorquez was averaging 45.1 yards per punt when he went on injured reserve, and after he was replaced by Schmidt, the Bills moved on from their former punter and brought in Matt Darr, who was even less effective than Schmidt. Overall
Frank Gore Jerseys Stitched , the injuries to the punters had an impact on Buffalo’s special teams, which took a big step backward in 2018.Of course, not all injuries are of the variety where a player misses games. Rookie cornerback Taron Johnson suffered a shoulder injury during the season’s first week, but he continued to gut through the pain until December. Who knows how much the injury limited the diminutive slot corner in terms of tackling, and even though he had a strong season overall, it could have been even better if he were healthy. Linebacker Matt Milano suffered a gruesome break to his lower leg late in the season, so he only missed three games overall. However, Buffalo’s defense clearly missed the versatile young linebacker, and they were forced to play an undrafted rookie (Corey Thompson) in Milano’s place. The Bills also lost their starting center, Russell Bodine, to a broken bone after ten games. He was replaced in the lineup by an ineffective Ryan Groy, making a weak Buffalo offensive line group even worse.Kicker Stephen Hauschka was injured via a cheap shot during a game against the New York Jets, but he managed not to miss any time. Hauschka was clearly limited by back pain, however, as the normally strong-legged kicker missed short on routine boots of 42 yards in consecutive December weeks. On the whole, Buffalo spent the 2018 season with the same players they wanted in their everyday starting lineup. However
Youth Adolphus Washington Jerseys , a few key injuries in positions lacking depth helped to derail even further what was a tough season for the club. Shoring up those positions heading into next year will be imperative and, hopefully, the Bills can be as healthy as they were this season in 2019. Murray-USA TODAY SportsTo call the quarterback situation for the 2018 Buffalo Bills a disaster would not accurately depict the mess that occurred at the position. Due to a confluence of poor planning and bad luck, the Bills actually managed to start two quarterbacks whom they had signed less than two weeks prior to making their first start. The team also released its opening-day starter, who only lasted one half of one game anyway, midway through the season. The positives around Josh Allen and his development took away some of the sting, but the quarterback situation last year was bad. This year, things seem to be far better, thanks in no small part to the player we’ll discuss in today’s installment of “90 players in 90 days.”Name: Matt BarkleyNumber: 5Position: QBHeight/Weight: 6’2” 234 lbs. Age: 28 (29 on 9/8/19)Experience/Draft: 7; selected in the fourth round (98 overall) by the Philadelphia Eagles in the 2013 NFL DraftCollege: USCAcquired: Signed with the Bills on 10/31/18Financial situation (per Spotrac): Barkley signed a two-year deal worth a total of $4 million this offseason. In 2019, his cap number is $1,737,500. That deal comes with a $600,000 signing bonus.2018 Recap: Barkley spent the preseason with the Cincinnati Bengals, but he did not make their final roster. He actually injured his knee during the preseason, and the team chose to release him with an injury settlement on September 12 rather than keep him on injured reserve all season. He spent the next six weeks unemployed
Adolphus Washington Jerseys Stitched , but when the Bills needed a quarterback due to injuries to Josh Allen and Derek Anderson, Barkley was the guy they signed. Thanks to ineffectiveness on the part of Nathan Peterman, Barkley made a start in the team’s Week 10 match-up against the New York Jets. All Barkley did was turn in the best performance by a Bills quarterback in the 2018 season to that point (and, arguably, overall), completing 15-of-25 passes for 232 yards and 2 touchdowns. Positional outlook: Barkley slots in as the backup quarterback this season, as Allen returns for his second campaign. After Anderson re-signed in the offseason, he made the decision to retire, giving undrafted rookie Tyree Jackson a chance to make the roster. However, the youngster would have to be mighty impressive to knock Barkley off the squad.2019 Offseason: Barkley has participated in OTAs and seems to be loving Buffalo. 2019 Season outlook: Barring something odd, Barkley will be the Frank Reich to Allen’s Jim Kelly for the 2019 season. If he is called upon to start a game or two, his performance last year against the Jets should give fans and teammates hope that he can not only hold his own while in the lineup, but he can be very successful within offensive coordinator Brian Daboll’s system. Barkley is the perfect backup for this team.
