ZURICH, Switzerland -- The World Anti-Doping Agency expects the Russian laboratory assigned to test samples at the Sochi Olympics to meet Sundays deadline for improving its operations. WADA director general David Howman said Friday he is awaiting the paperwork from the Moscow lab that faces potential suspension for the Feb. 7-23 Winter Games. "I have no reason to have any concern about it," Howman told The Associated Press on the sidelines of an anti-doping conference hosted by FIFA. WADA threatened the lab with a six-month suspension if it failed to fulfil a two-part demand: detail a new management program by Dec. 1 and implement it by April 1. "There is a genuine desire to make sure things are done properly," Howman said. "There is no anxiety, no concerns." WADA accredits testing labs worldwide, though the International Olympic Committee is responsible overall for testing at the games. Moscow is setting up a "satellite" lab in Sochi to test samples during the games. If the lab is suspended, the IOC would have to ship the samples out of the country to another lab for analysis, a costly procedure. On another issue, Howman said WADA is improving relations with Jamaica following recent revelations that the Caribbean islands testing program collapsed ahead of the 2012 London Olympics, where its sprinters dominated the track. Jamaica has followed through on promises made by sports minister Natalie Neita-Headley at a WADA conference in Johannesburg two weeks ago, Howman said. "So far, Jamaica has done everything the minister told me they would do," he said. Resignations of all 12 members of the Jamaica Anti-Doping Commission will take effect at the end of the year and four staff are set to be hired to bolster a revamped testing program. Howman said Jamaicas government had also promised funding for the national agency, which could build links with Canadian anti-doping officials as mentors. Six of the nine were finished with baseball at 34 years of age or younger, one is still playing at 34 as a shadow of what he once was, and the other two stuck around until they were 38 years old. Im not saying Jose Bautista cant bounce back but based on this unscientific study, the odds are better that his numbers will remain static or diminish further and he will continue to have physical issues. The Blue Jays need to upgrade their starting pitching. Bautista still has enough sock and caché to bring back a decent return. The old cliché in sports is that its better to trade a player a year too soon rather than a year too late. Regrettably, I think Jose Bautistas time has come. During his brief stint in Toronto, Eric Thames was one of my favourites. He was an engaging personality who seemed to have a lot of skills. He had his ups and down defensively in left field, but I always thought he was going to make it. On Thursday of this week, he was claimed on waivers by Houston from Baltimore. So in just over a year, Thames has been part of four organizations - the Blue Jays, Seattle (Steve Delabar trade), Baltimore and now the Astros. Heres hoping he finds a home in Houston. An unusual waiver pick-up the same day was Washington claiming long-time minor league slugger Mauro Gomez from the Blue Jays.
