I see that this topic has never been addressed in the Forum and I would like to know if it does interest you. As far as I am aware, there are two websites with such shows:
1) Xena & Ubers by Cas (http://www.xena-ubers.blogspot.com)
Cas is currently posting a show once a week (approximately), the last episode (#96) been posted on January 27, 2010.
She says in her show notes: “This Podcast is for all Xena & Ubers sub-text stories that are out there and have not been given a voice.”
The reading of the story constitutes the main part of the show, but she complements it with funny things, music snippets, book reviews, movie recommendations, some news related to the Xenaverse, and other things. She is doing a great effort by changing voices for the different characters.
Cas reads mostly novel length stories divided over a number of episodes. She is reading now “A Matter of Pride” by Melissa Good, but I am not yet there (in any case, I am sure that this work does not need comments...)
She has read the entire “Conqueror Series” by L.J. Maas (a most recognized classic in the fandom)
I think that the only short stories that she has included are those that form the “Mel & Janice Trilogy” by The Fallen (who created very interesting and complex characters and presented them in a way tremendously courageous)
2) Xena Fanfiction Podcast by Amy Boatman (http://xenafanfictionpodcast.blogspot.com)
Unfortunately, this one is not active anymore, the last episode (#27) been posted on November 20, 2007.
Amy reads short and medium length stories using a narrator’s style. She says in her show notes: “I am going to read selected classic Xena fanfiction stories. By classic, I mean stories about Xena and Gabrielle set in their own world as opposed to conqueror or uber stories set in alternate universes. I will read it as written with no commentary or opinions on my part. Although, you have to know if I'm reading it on my show, then I must like it.”
For me, this is one of the most enjoyable forms of improving my understanding of spoken English. However, I can easily imagine other people listening to these stories in their way to and from work or school, while doing household chores, to rest their eyes, or whatever.
Once given this bit of information, and taking into account the increasing development of computer-read e-books, I would love to know your opinions.
I am no only interested in the usual fanfiction reader, but also in the writers’ view. What do you think about having your stories read aloud? Does bother you that maybe the accent, the rhythm, the voice, etc. are not what you have in your mind? On the contrary, does it flatter you? Would you prefer a computer reading? What are your thoughts about it?
I apologize for all the mistakes that I have made. Thank you for your patience, I would appreciate any comment.
