(Story Of Victory part 2)
by BacchusKiller

Nikι, Taya and Amazons you never heard of are mine, all mine. Others are from MCA/Universal. Prepare for love between two women, violence and the rest. There is mention of rape and some torture, but I'll keep it as mild as possible.
This is a sequel. Read 'The story of Victory' first. You won't understand this one otherwise. Again, I am a new writer and would appreciate feedback. Find me at white_tiger107@hotmail.com. Thanks to my beta, the true goddess Jazmine. You can find her at Jazz2023@aol.com.

Hope you enjoy it!

So, back again for the rest of my life, huh? Never knew I was that interesting. Anyway, I must warn you, parts of this are not pretty. But I would not change them for anything. After all, we are what life makes us. Let's start this story about three moons after the other one left off ...

I woke up by the feeling of someone watching me. I opened my eyes slowly and saw the eyes of my soul mate before me. This was unusual … normally she slept the morning away "Good morning love," I murmured and looked outside where the morning sun already shone brightly. My eyes flew wide open, I had a class at dawn. Quickly, I jumped out of the bed and searched for my clothes, under the watchful eyes of a smirking Taya. "I'm late … Why didn't you wake me!?" I said while fumbling with the laces on my clothing. Taya chuckled, "you where sleeping so peacefully … and we did have a busy night."

I pulled my boots on and smirked as well, remembering the oh so pleasuring, but oh so tiring, activities that lasted till well after midnight. Kneeling on the bed, I moved closer to Taya for a proper morning kiss that had me wish I could stay. "Meet you for lunch?" I asked, Taya nodded and with another kiss, I ran out of the hut and towards the training fields. On my way, I passed Taya's mom, Nyssa. "Late again, Nikι," she yelled at me and laughed wickedly. I shook my head and kept running.

A bunch of young Amazons, about twelve to fourteen summers old, stood waiting on the fields. They looked at me when I finally got there, some of them with grins on their faces. "Sorry … I hope you have started a warm-up?" the grins disappeared, giving me my answer. "Ok then, form the lines," I commanded with a smile, taking my place in front. They formed three lines with enough space in between. I took them through some basic, non-combat, moves as a warm-up until I could feel my own muscles losing the soreness and stress. I halted the others. "Enough … for about a moon now, we have studied the art of unarmed combat. I want to do a little testing today … Form a circle!" They did and I stood in the center, watching the twenty-something youngsters around me. I pointed at one of the older and taller ones. "Nawera … come here," I said. The Amazon swallowed and slowly stepped forward.

She stood before me. "Attack me … Use all you have learned," I said softly. I picked this Amazon because I knew she could do it. Nawera nodded and readied herself. She charged me and punched, I sidestepped it. She tried again and again, one punch even came close. She was fast. Then, suddenly, she changed tactics and kicked towards my ribs. I grabbed her foot right on time, grabbed her shoulder and kicked her other leg from under her, taking her down. I held on to her shoulder to break her fall. Laughter erupted and I helped Nawera back on her feet, before glaring around me. "Enough!" I yelled. Everyone turned silent. "We are here to learn … it will take years of further training before any of you is capable of taking me down. But please, if anyone thinks she can do better than Nawera, feel free to try" I paused, waiting to see if there's one arrogant enough to challenge me. I was a bit disappointed there was none, remembering the challenge from Taya's sister many moons ago.

"Ok then," I turned back to Nawera. "Well done, you'll make a fine warrior one day," I said. The girl smiled brightly. "Now … I will pair everyone up in couples." I looked at height, age and skill to pair them all up. I had thought about that before, so it was done quickly. I told them to face each other and to try and take the other one down, carefully.

I walked between them and watched closely, stopping once in awhile to correct a stance or to show a move again. All by all, I was feeling proud of my group. They where doing relatively well, even the smallest ones. There were a few, though, who thought of their partner's as real enemies and fought carelessly. I ran towards one who was hitting her partner way too hard and I grabbed her fist right before she would throw another punch aimed at her head. "You break her nose and I break yours! … This is training, not a battlefield. We don't injure our sparring partner. If I catch you again, you're out of my group … then you can become a cook or something," I said angrily. The Amazon nodded quickly and I left them, keeping a close eye on them for the rest of the morning.

A few candlemarks later, I called it a halt. No more incidents had occurred and I was glad that I wouldn't have to throw one out of the group. I gathered my students. "Well done today … Take a good rest and be here tomorrow at dawn. Remember what we did today, these kinds of exercises will happen a lot from now one ... Go, scram!" They smiled at me and then left quickly, playing the entire way back to the village.

"Kids …," I murmured and wondered where they got all that energy. Shaking my head, I followed them back to the village to meet Taya for lunch.

You could call this 'a day in the life'. I would teach my class in the morning, while Taya went out hunting with her mother. We'd meet for lunch and spend the afternoon and evening together. It was heaven, pure Elysia! Sometimes we would join up with a few guards and take the smallest of the children out to the woods for a walk, like one day ...

"Keep up, kids … we're almost there," Taya said and the little rugrats walking behind us ran ahead, cheering. I laughed softly. Taya grabbed my hand and pulled me against her. "What's so funny?" she asked, while we walked with our arms around each other. I shook my head. "Just the kids … it's a crazy group we've got today," Taya nodded and chuckled.

A few moments later, we arrived at an open spot in the forest. Wild flowers grew between the grass and a small creek ran at one side between some rocks. The tribe had discovered this place some time ago and turned in into a playground for the kids.

The children ran off and started playing. Some darted towards the creek and splashed into the water. One of the other guards sat close by to make sure no one could hurt herself. Some other girls started to whisper and chuckle. I knew they where up to something when they smiled brightly towards me. Frowning, I walked over when one waved at me.

"Ok, what are you up to?" I asked. One of them, I recognized her as the little sister of one of my students, looked at me. "My sister said you can't be beaten in wrestling … I want to prove that's not true." I chuckled softly and eyed the five year old. "U-huh …" I murmured and then smiled "C'mon then, little warrior," I taunted playfully. The girl growled … then all the surrounding children jumped on me.

I laid on the ground, struggling to get up, with about five little ones on top of me, tickling me without mercy and squealing with laughter. "Okay … Ok … stop, I surrender …" I said between breaths and chuckles, word came out that I am ticklish. They stopped and after a second I opened my eyes and stared at five pair of eyes around me. "I guess … Oh mighty little ones, that I lost this battle," the girls chuckled, got up and started jumping up and down with their hand up in the air. I chuckled as well and looked up when sweet laughter filled my ears.

Taya stood besides me. "Didn't some great warrior once told me that size doesn't matter in a fight?" she said and laughed again before reaching down. "Come, you big bad warrior." I grabbed her arm and stood up. I ducked my head and stole a kiss from her sweet lips. "Kids these days …" I murmured and we laughed again.

We walked towards the edge of the field and I dropped down against a tree with Taya sitting between my legs. I pulled her against my chest and held her close. Taya sighted and dropped her head back to rest on my shoulder. We were silent for long moments, basking in the warmth of the sun and inner peace.

It was Taya who broke the silence, she never could stay silent for long. "Have you ever thought about having kids of your own?" she said softly, her eyes following the little ones playing around. I was taken by surprise and it took me a moment to form an answer. "No … well, I really haven't though about that yet."

"You're good with the kids … I think you'd make a great mom one day," Taya said softly and turned her head to look at me. I smiled softly "You think so?" My love nodded and gave me a soft kiss. "Maybe one day," I concluded and was rewarded with a bright smile. We settled back in our former position and I buried my face in her hair. "I love you," I murmured "I know," was the answer.

On other days, we would train together. Me trying to improve my love's skill with the staff, or she trying to improve my skill in archery because I couldn't hit the target if it stood right before my eyes …

"I can't do this," I knew I was whining but I just didn't care. This was about the hundredth time the arrow missed the target completely. They even placed a wide board behind the target line just to make sure I couldn't hit someone else. Taya chuckled softly and stepped next to me. "Let's try it again," she loaded her bow and stood ready to fire. "Just focus on the target and let go," she instructed and fired. The arrow stuck right in the centre of the target.

I shook my head before loading the bow almost effortlessly, a skill that took me weeks to master. Taking the right stance, I tried to focus and then let go of the arrow. It ebbed itself in the board behind the target and a yelp of pain came from me when the bowstring once again snapped against my hand, leaving a nasty red streak behind. I threw the bow down and turned to Taya. "Enough … no more archery … can't do it, don't like it, hurts too much!" I spat angrily and pulled those uncomfortable, not working archery gloves off my hands.

Taya waited for a moment to let me cool down, before she stepped to me and smiled. "You're getting better," she said and took my hand to check the streaks. "What I don't get is that you wear the gloves and still manage to get hit by the string." I growled when she ran her fingers over my hand and then pouted when Taya chuckled. "You're so cute when you do that," she said with a smile and stretched herself to place a kiss on my lips. I started to smile too, how could I not?

"I don't think archery is for me," I said softly and to my relief, Taya nodded. "I think so too, honey," she said and after a moment we laughed. Picking up our stuff, we walked back to the village and met up with Lyanna on the way.

"Nikι, you wanna go training with me, Mom and Gale this evening?" Taya's sister said hurriedly. I gave her a wide smile "Yeah sure … I'll meet you after dinner at home" Lyanna gave me a thumb up and then quickly disappeared. We did that a lot, training with Nyssa and Lyanna's future mate. The next festival and their joining was just one month away.

"I think she's seeing Gale right now," Taya told me with a chuckle. I smiled, happy for my sister-in-law. I lowered my head and placed a soft kiss on Taya's cheek. What a mushball I had become!

One day, however, we where forced to spend our afternoon apart. Taya was going with the children, but Ephiny needed to talk with her high warriors and included me … It was the start of a nightmare that still haunts me.

The weapon master, 5 other warriors (including Nyssa and myself) sat at the large round table in the meeting hut waiting for regent Ephiny to start the meeting. None of us had any idea why we were here.

The curly haired Amazon entered and we stood up in respect. "Sit down," Ephiny said gently and took her seat at the head of the table. She waited for a moment and sighted deeply before looking at each of us. "We have a problem … Scouts have spotted a small army entering our territory at the southern valley yesterday."

I couldn't believe what I heard. "Yesterday!" I said sharply. The regent lowered her head slightly. "I have only heard about it just now … Besides, we have no idea what their intentions are. With an army like that, there's no way they will risk to attack our tribe. It is likely that they don't know this is Amazon territory," the regent spoke softly but with authority. I sighed. She was right with one thing, we had no idea what they were up to. Ephiny cleared her throat. "I want the warriors on stand-by. Eponin, make sure that the weapons are sharpened and ready," the weapon master nodded. "Kyra and Kyle, make sure no one leaves the village and inform the perimeter guards. If they spot anything odd, they must send a runner back to the villages," the two sisters nodded. "Loran, Myra and Nyssa … inform the warriors and tell them to prepare in silence," the three warriors nodded as well. "Go," Ephiny said and all but me stood up, saluted and left the hut, understanding their orders.

Ephiny looked towards me. "Finally, Nikι … I want you to make sure none of your students tries to be a hero and run off with the warriors. They are no way near ready for that." I stood up. "What about the children? … a group went out just after noon. Taya's with them and Lyanna and Gale," I said, starting to worry. Ephiny sighed "I know … if I knew, I would have stopped them." The regent stood up and stepped towards me. "I'm worried too … But some good warriors went with them, including Solari … I'm sure they will be fine," I nodded and saluted before I walked out of the hut to start the search of my students with a heavy feeling on my heart.

Dusk had come and left to be replaced by night. None of the children nor their guards had returned. My students where informed of the situation and had received orders to stay in the village at all costs. Those who would disobey, would be kicked out of my class. I sat on a bench outside my home, alone. Taya's moms sat inside. Like me they where worried about the fate of their children. I started to pace, trying to keep the eerie feeling that had settled in my chest at bay.

I heard footsteps behind me and turned to see the huge form of Nyssa in the doorway. "You should try and get some rest. We're gathering for a search at dawn," she told me. I looked at her, noting the redness in her eyes and the tired features on her face. I gave a nod, knowing I wouldn't sleep a blink without my soul mate by my side. Stepping inside the my hut, I lay down on the bed and stared at the ceiling. "Please be safe … I can't live without you," I whispered to no one as tears started to fall from my eyes.

It was long hours before dawn as I made my way to the village square and I wasn't surprised to find more warriors already on alert. Most had friends, little sisters or daughters among the missing group. I met up with Eponin who was sharpening swords. "You Ok?" the weapon master asked me. I just shrugged, absolutely not feeling Ok. She understood.

We waited in silence for news. I was getting more agitated by the minute. "We waited too long," I said suddenly. Eponin looked at me strangely and I explained myself further. "We should have started our search as soon as we figured out something was wrong. So much could have happened since then," I restarted my pacing.

"Wrong," Eponin said with a sigh. "If we would have started last evening, we would have never found them. We would've been caught in the woods at night and become food for the wolves. Ephiny was right in letting us wait."

I ran both my hands through my hair and groaned. I heard Eponin walk up to me and place a hand on my shoulder "Be strong, kiddo. Do it for your students. Don't let them see you like this." I took a deep breath and looked at the stoic Amazon. "Thanks," I said. Eponin smiled and patted my back. Then she returned to her work.

Regent Ephiny showed up just before dawn with the royal guard. Nearly all Amazons had assembled on the square. The regent carried a warrior mask in her hand and handed it to me. "Wear it with pride," she said. I looked up at her as I accepted the mask and saw the sadness in her eyes, sadness reflected by the whole tribe. Ephiny walked further and climbed on the small platform used for special announcements or by bards. "Warriors, there is no need to explain the situation. We will divide ourselves in several small groups and search the perimeter. It starts at dawn. Remember to be cautious and don't try anything stupid. Just search for now," everyone was silent. Within moments, groups of a dozen warriors were formed, each with a leader. I was put in Nyssa's team. The sun slowly came up and we went on our way.

Nyssa led us through the forest that was slowly gaining life. Birds chirped happily in the threes, barely noticing us. I walked next to her, the warrior mask covering my face. Above us, a second group passed through the trees, heading for another part of the forest. I felt my heart beating furiously. An hour passed quickly and we found no tracks, until birdcalls alerted us.

We moved quickly to a small open field at the borders of our territory. What I saw there made my blood run cold. Several guards and children lay around the perimeter. The warriors behind me gasped and quickly ran out onto the field, seeing if their family was with them, hoping it wasn't true. I followed Nyssa and we walked slowly through the bodies. Looking to my side, I saw a familiar dark, feathered head. "No," I moaned and dropped on my knees next to the corpse of Gale. She still had her sword in her hand and I reached out to close her lifeless eyes. Standing, I continued scouting the area. We could grieve later.

Heading south, I heard a soft moan from behind a three. I walked to it, carefully. "Lyanna," I gasped and quickly scurried to her side, lifting the mask I wore. The young Amazon smiled weakly. I checked her out and saw the huge wound across her abdominals. She hissed in pain as I placed my hand there, trying to stop the bleeding. "I tried," she murmured, pointing her eyes on mine "to save her, them," I frowned, not completely understanding. Lyanna coughed up blood. "I saw … Gale … couldn't help her, I was too far … Taya … they have her," she lifted her hand and grabbed my arm "Save my sister … Tell her … I love her and … I'm sorry," I noticed that she breathed heavier by the minute and I had to fight the tears.

"LYANNA!!" came from behind me as Nyssa ran at her side, pushing me harshly out of the way. The huge woman cradled her dying daughter in her arms and whispered words in her ear. I couldn't understand them as I crawled onto my feet. Then, I heard the warrior sob and let my own tears go free.

Composing myself, I left Nyssa alone and checked up on the others. Many warriors kneeled beside the bodies of friends and family. Others tried to console them. I motioned towards a young warrior who was mutely looking at the sight. "Kalim," I said and it took a moment before she looked at me. "You're a fast runner, head to the village and let them bring a wagon here. Tell the regent what you saw and inform her to form a war party immediately." I saw Kalim starting to protest, since I was not in charge. Sighing, I pointed towards Nyssa "You wanna go and ask her? The woman just lost her daughter and can lose another one if we don't move quickly!" Kalim nodded quickly and ran towards the woods before disappearing into the trees.

About an hour later, after the bodies where loaded in the wagon, we arrived back at the village. The silence was suffocating. I watched Nyssa walk over to her mate and both fell into the other's arms, crying. Closing my eyes for a moment, I mentally composed myself. I was once a warlord, I should be able to block out my emotions for the time being. There were more important things to do now. I disappeared between the crowd and headed to the stables, were I quickly saddled my horse. Just as I started to mount, I felt someone standing behind me. It was Ephiny, her tired, red-rimmed eyes telling her pain.

"Wait for the war-party to assemble," she said softly. I ignored her and pulled myself into the saddle. Ephiny moved closer and grabbed hold of my arm, pulling me forward. "You are not the only one who has loved ones still missing!" the regent hissed, her eyes shooting fire. I stared at her, never had the gentle hearted regent shown such anger. Then, seconds later, I felt my walls fall down as the first tears slid down my cheeks. Ephiny helped me dismount and lent me her shoulder to cry on. "You can't always stay strong, Nikι. Not even true Amazons can," she said softly "We leave in a few moments. Scouts have found the army's camp. We'll be there just after noon," I wiped at my cheeks, nodding softly. "I'll be there," I said, my voice shaking. And as said, mere moments later, hordes of riders and even more runners left the village seeking revenge …

Those where, I think, the most horrible days in my life. The uncertainty brewing inside hurt more that I could ever imagine. And then there was the loss of Lyanna, a loss that still hurts even after all this time. The strong and brave Amazon was no more. I didn't realize it back then, I think. There was no time to grieve just yet. Nyssa wasn't capable of fighting any more so I took her place as leader of the group.

I watched one of the scouts return. "And?" I said bluntly without looking at her and the elderly woman hesitated. "Euhm … it looks peacefully. A few guards here and there, some sleeping soldiers near the campfires and lots of empty wine barrels. Looks like they had quite a party last night. I believe the others are in the tents," she said. I looked towards Kyra and Kyle, 2 of the high warriors who sat proudly on their horse besides me. They both nodded and headed off to their own group. Kyra took them right while Kyle went left. I would lead my group to attack the camp head on and another group, lead by high warriors Loran and Myra, stood ready on the other side of the valley. There was no escape.

Silently, we took our positions at the edge of the clearing. Wandering guards were ambushed and killed without mercy. Then the call came and from every way, Amazons poured from the woods into the unprepared camp. I nudged my horse and sped off, pulling my sword. The sound of battle was deafening as battle cries mixed with cries of fear. Reaching the camp, I soon found myself in the heat of battle. Poorly prepared men fell by my blade as I inched closer to one of the large tents. One soldier with a pike came beside and got lucky, cutting me on my face and causing me to fall off the horse. Standing, I checked for a wound and sighed when realizing that the fall probably saved my life. Only a scratch remained. The man with the pike attacked again and I ducked, piercing through his chest with my sword.

I finally reached the first tent and found six bound Amazons, bruised and beaten but alive. Taking a knife from my boot, I cut them loose. They ran out, helping in the battle. I stopped the last one from leaving and recognized Solari under the black bruises covering her face. "Where is she?" I asked. She shook her head. "They took her to their leader this morning, the large red tent," she said sadly and then ran out to fight with the others.

Feeling my heart beating in my chest, I fought my way over to the red tent, taking down more men on the way. I saw that the fights were almost over as the rest of my sisters finished the last of the soldiers. Quickly, I entered the large tent. It was a normal commander's tent like I once had, only bigger and richer. It was also empty. Walking towards the back, my eyes fell upon a lump covered with blankets next to the bed. I rushed over and carefully removed the blankets. Gasping, I sat back, staring at the naked, badly bruised and unconscious form of my lover. I don't know how long I sat there but Taya's stirring broke through my shock. Kneeling beside her, I carefully lifted her a little, holding her tenderly. She gave a soft groan and lifted her head. Violet eyes opened to slits. "Nikι," she murmured softly and grasped my shirt tightly. "I'm here, my love … You're safe," I whispered soothingly and hugged her tighter. She sighed and I felt her slip into unconsciousness again. Taking a blanket, I wrapped it around her and lifted her into my arms.

Walking outside, I found several amazons waiting. I walked towards Kyra who still sat on her horse. Carefully, I handed Taya over to her. "Take her to Saras, quickly," I said. Kyra nodded and turned her horse to head back. I turned to the others, "What's going on?" A young warrior spoke. "Most of the soldiers are dead. The rest ran into the woods. We captured their leader."

"Hunt them down," I said harshly. The warrior's eyes widened. "W-What?" I pointed towards several other warriors. "I said hunt them down! … and bring me their leader!" I was angry and it must have shown because several warriors took a step back. However, Solari stood before me. "Those that ran can't do harm anymore. They are few and outnumbered. And as for their leader, he will be taken to the village and put on trial. The elders will decide what shall be his fate. But for now, I am tired, hurting and missing those I love. I think all of us are. Let's go home," I looked into the tired brown eyes on my friends for long moments and then nodded slowly.

Slowly, most of the amazons returned home. Some stayed behind to burn down the camp and the fallen soldiers. I however, couldn't be back soon enough...

I ignored everything around me until I stood before Saras' hut. Nyssa and Morien sat outside looking utterly exhausted. Nyssa looked up at me. "Saras is still treating her," she said softly, causing Morien to see me as well. She stood up "You're hurt!" the shorter woman said and reached up to touch my cheek. I flinched for a moment. Morien made me sit down and placed some cloth over what I thought was a mere scratch.

"That'll need some stitches," she said and sat down again between me and Nyssa. I sighed as she placed a comforting hand on my leg and we waited. Mere moments later, the healer stepped out of her hut. The three of us stood up. "You can go in now. And trust me, it looks worse than it is. Taya was lucky," Saras said and stepped back inside followed by Taya's moms and me.

Tired violet eyes met mine as I entered and I hurried to my love's side. "Hi," I said softly, capturing her hand in mine. She cracked a smile "Back at yah," she softly said, her voice trembling a little. I sat down on the chair next to the bed and softly kissed her cheek. Morien and Nyssa moved to the other side of the bed. Taya smiled at them "Mom, mama" she said softly, causing Morien to sob. "I love you honey," the elder woman said and sought comfort in Nyssa's arms. Taya frowned. "Why are you crying? I'll be Ok … What's wrong?" she asked, then it hit her "Where's Lyanna?" Morien cried again.

I swallowed and ran my hand through Taya's locks. She looked at me again, question in her eyes. "Lyanna is … dead," I softly said, hardly able to say those words. Taya looked up "Dead?" she uttered softly and broke down when I gave a nod. I moved to lay on the bed and wrapped my arms around her, holding her carefully against me while she cried.

Slowly, I ran my fingers through her hair, feeling tears soak my shirt. I looked up to see both moms slowly leaving our side and head towards Saras. Sighing, I buried my face in reddish hair and couldn't help falling asleep myself.

Soft shakes woke me and I saw the gentle face of the healer before me. "How long was I out?" I asked, my voice raw with sleep. Saras chuckled "Only about an hour. You needed it." I yawned and sat up straight. A soft moan made me look to my side and smile at Taya who unconsciously curled against me. Saras stood "I need to talk to you first and check out that 'scratch' you have there. So if you could leave her side for one moment." Shaking the sleep out of my eyes, I got to me feet and, after tucking Taya in with a kiss, followed the healer to the next room.

"Let me see that," Saras said softly and made me sit on a table while she peeled the bandage from my face. I hissed when the tender skin was touched. "That's going to leave a mark," the healer said, as sarcastic as ever. She took her sewing kit and started putting small stitches on my face. From what I could feel, the cut ran from next to my right eye down in a curve to end just below my chin. I hadn't realized it was so big.

I heard Saras sigh as she finished the last knot. Standing before me, she smiled softly, but I knew the elder good enough to know that something was amiss. "What?" I asked, holding the healer captive with my eyes. She shook her head. "It's Taya," she started, but got interrupted by me "She's going to be Ok, isn't she?" I started to stand up, Saras pushed me back down. "Physically, she's gonna be fine with a lot of rest. Mentally could take a while," I closed my eyes, remembering the condition I found Taya in "She's been … raped … hasn't she?" I could barely say the word. Saras was silent, confirming my words. "Was there any damage?" I faced the healer again. "A small tear, nothing to worry about. We have to wait a few weeks to see if there was further … damage."

I stood with a nod and headed back to the other room. "The pyres will be lit in a few hours. I'll wake the both of you," Saras said with a smile, before leaving the hut. Sighing, I headed to the bed and laid down next to Taya. Wrapping myself around her sleeping form, I soon fell back asleep.

Hours later, we watched the flames burn high. Several pyres stood outside the village, the entire tribe gathered around them. I stood with Taya in my arms next to Nyssa and Morien, watching both Lyanna and Gale travel to the other realm. The silence of the night was only broken by the crackling of the fire and every now and then a sob. Looking around me, I noticed Ephiny and Solari with tears in their eyes. Even the great stoic warrior, Eponin, had tears running down her cheeks. I looked at the fire once more, unconsciously hugging Taya a little tighter.

The morning sun slowly came up and most Amazons had left to seek comfort at home. I took Taya home, tucked her in and returned to the fields when she fell asleep. Now I stood between the smoking remains of the funeral pyres murmuring curses to the gods. Lyanna wasn't just my sister-in-law. She was a friend, as arrogant as I was and a great warrior. "Don't you care about your people, Artemis, patron goddess of the Amazons. Did you enjoy watching them die? Watching them burn?" I continued to say, getting louder "If Taya doesn't recover, I'm personally coming after you. Goddess or not!"

Someone chuckled behind me and I turned to find Nyssa walking towards me. "Strong words," she said, standing next to me now "But the goddess is not to blame. What has to be has to be. Even if we don't like it," she paused for a moment and looked at me "You losing from Rome, Xena bringing you here. You falling in love with my daughter … that was meant to be. Lyanna dying, even though it hurts more that I could ever imaging, was meant to be," she closed her eyes. "But it's not fair," I said softly. "It never is," was the answer before Nyssa patted my back and walked back to the village.

The following weeks passed quietly. Taya healed from her injuries, but she stayed distant and silent, even to me. The warlord responsible for it all got a fair trial and was sentenced to death. He hung. The village recovered from it's losses and soon I started teaching again. But it didn't feel right. Every noon I'd go home to find Taya in bed, or sitting outside, staring in the distance.

Coming home from a very tiring training session with one of my best students, I found Taya sitting on the bench outside our home. Normally, she'd run towards me in greeting. These days she barely noticed me. Sighing, I put my stuff inside before sitting next to her. Moments passed in silence. I couldn't bear it any longer. "I love you," I said softly. Taya looked at me with a small smile and then broke down in tears. Scared that I did something wrong, I quickly hugged her against my chest. I didn't know what to say, so I was silent.

"I know," was mumbled into my chest. For long moments, I comforted her, rocking back and forth with her in my arms, until I heard the crying stop. "It's the scar, isn't it?" I said on a dramatic tone and felt relief when she chuckled softly "Am I that ugly now?" Violet eyes looked up and a tiny hand traced the still healing cut on my face. "You could never be ugly … I love you too," Taya said, giving me a soft kiss and placing her head back on my chest. She sighed "Thank you."

I frowned "For what?" Taya looked back up "For still being here. I know I haven't been the most easiest person around." Giving her a kiss, I smiled "I'd walk through fire for you, Taya … and the gods know that I'm not the easiest person around, ALL the time … I should be thanking you." She chuckled again, oh how I missed that sound. "I love you, Nikι … and I'd love you even more if you'd take a bath. You stink!" I had a mock hurt look on my face now. "Again with the 'You stink' sentence. That's bad for my ego, ya know?" I stood after stealing a kiss and grabbed a bag with fresh clothes from inside. Turning, I looked towards my love "Are we Ok?" I asked and smiled when she nodded. Taya stood and walked closer, pulling my face down for a kiss I hadn't gotten since before the terrifying events. I was visibly panting as she let me go "Go take that bath, tiger," she said and then disappeared inside with an evil little laugh. I shook my head to try and clear it and started to walk towards the bathing hut with very wobbly legs.

About an hour later, as the sun slowly went down, I returned to the hut. My friend, Eponin, was at the bathing hut and we talked. I chuckled when remembering how she teased me about the redness in my face. But now I wanted to get my love, get some food and go home.

Entering the hut, I saw a food filled tray on the table and frowned "Taya?" I called out. A soft glow came from above the screen that marked our bedroom. I walked behind the screen, stopping dead in my tracks. Candles bathed the bed with a soft glow and in the center of the big bed was Taya, wearing a robe. She chuckled, probably because I stood there frozen. I frowned slightly, wondering where all the salvia in my mouth went. It was there a minute ago.

Taya held out her hand and I was powerless to stop myself as I walked closer. Sitting down next to her, I was again mesmerized by her beauty. Violet eyes met mine. "I love you," she said and moved closer quickly, kissing me hungrily. I moaned as she pushed me on my back and straddled me. Getting over the shock, I ran my hands over her back, finding out that the robe was the only item she was wearing. Taya broke off the kiss after a few precious moments and stared into my eyes, panting. "I need you, Nikι … Now … I need to feel whole again," she said softly, her eyes burning into mine. I smiled and buried one of my hands in her hair. Pulling her closer, I kissed her gently. Wrapping my other arm around her, I pulled her next to me and crawled onto her body. "Let me love you," I said, kissing her neck. With a peck on her lips and a cocky smile, I stood up and started to remove my clothes. Taya looked at me, her eyes darkening. Once naked, I slowly undid the binds to Taya's robe and tossed it on the ground. Resuming my former position, we both groaned when flesh met flesh.

I was worshipping, kissing every bit of skin I could. Taya whimpered softly as I found that sensitive spot behind her knees. Finally I sat back on my heels. "You are truly beautiful, a goddess," I said in awe. Taya reached up, grabbed my shoulder hard and pulled me back down. "Don't tease me," she said with a little growl. And I listened. Short moments later, my name was screamed for all to hear.

The following morning, I woke up when the sun shone on my face and my stomach rumbled. I smiled when remembering why I missed dinner last night. Kissing the crown of reddish hair, I buried my face in it and sighed. Last night was something to remember forever. After Taya had rested for a moment, she repaid me well, very well. Then we talked about what caused her to shut down for over a week. She told me that she felt scared, used and unwanted. And she told me that she figured it out and knew that only my touch could make those feelings go away. I must say that I felt a little cocky then.

With another sigh, I wrapped myself around Taya, my memories from the night before still filing my head. Me getting cocky turned my baby on. I wish I'd knew that before. With those happy thoughts filling my head, I started to drift back to sleep. Screw my morning class, they'll understand …

Weeks passed by like this. The village was getting back to it's former self, though the memories still remained and would remain until this very day. Even now, nearly 40 years later, those who lost their lives are remembered. But enough of that, back to the point. So, Taya and I were good again. She still suffered from nightmares every once in a while, but aside from that she was starting to recover mentally. I was beginning to believe that it was all over. But I would soon find out that things can always get worse …

I woke from slumber when reaching aside and finding an empty cold bed. Opening my eyes, I sat up and saw that morning had barely come. It was not like my love to get up at dawn, certainly not before it. Not seeing Taya in the room, I stood up wrapping a blanket around my naked form and stepped passed the screen. Taya was sitting at the table, staring outside. She looked so sad and scared; it made my heart ache. As I walked towards her, she looked up and gave me a small smile, "Did I wake you, honey?" she asked. I shook my head and walked behind her, placing a kiss on her cheek.

"What's wrong, my love? Another nightmare?" I knew that couldn't be true, since Taya always thrashes in the bed when having a nightmare, causing me to wake up. I wrapped my arms around her and felt her sigh as she shook her head negative. "What is it then?" Taya hesitated and spoke so soft I barely heard her, "I'm late," Frowning I asked, "Late for what?" Can't blame me for being a little slow so early in the day, right?

Taya turned in her chair and looked at me "The curse, ya know? I'm three weeks late," she said, fear in her eyes. It took a few seconds before I fully understood what I just been told. Composing myself, I looked into violet eyes filled with fear and quickly gathered Taya in my arms. "By Artemis, Nikι, I'm so scared," Taya said as she started sobbing. I soothed her "It'll be Ok, Taya. We're going to see Saras in the morning, Ok? I'm sure it'll be nothing," I tried to sound convincing, but deep inside I knew what the possibilities were and I cursed silently. We where just getting back on track.

A few hours later, I stood on the training field but my thoughts were elsewhere. My sparring partner, one of my most promising students, Nawera, looked at me strangely after her battle staff once again pierced my defenses and hit me in the chest. Standing again, I looked at her. "You are really getting good," I said. Nawera shook her head, "Might be, but you're not focused today … Something wrong?" I rubbed the sore spot on my chest "Let's hope not," I said silently and was relieved when Nawera let it go. "Let's quit for today, Ok? I'll see you tomorrow morning in class." Nawera nodded and walked away to find someone else to practice with.

Deep in thoughts, I walked back to the village and towards Saras' hut. A guard stood outside and told me to wait. Frowning slightly, I sat down on the bench outside and did as asked. Long moments later, Saras stepped outside and waved me in. We walked towards a room where Taya sat. "I'll leave you two alone for a moment. If you need me, I'm next door," the healer said, looking at Taya. I frowned and watched Saras leave, closing the door behind her. Taya looked at me and I took a step closer, she looked so scared. "What's wrong?" I asked, my voice shaking as well. Taya sighed and murmured something. Seeing that I didn't quite catch that, she repeated, a little louder this time "I'm pregnant."

I must say that it took a moment for it to pierce my mind, but when I finally did, my eyes widened and my jaw dropped. Slowly composing myself, I glanced at Taya and saw the scared look still in her eyes. Mentally shaking my head, I walked over and wrapped her in my arms. "We should talk, right?" I tried and felt Taya nod. Taking a chair, I sat down in front of her. Taking her hands in mine, I looked into her eyes as my thumbs soothingly rubbed the back of her hands. She bit her lower lip, signaling how nervous she was. Finally, her eyes met mine and she spoke, "Saras told me about certain herbs that could … ya know," I nodded, understanding what she was saying "What do you want to do?" I asked and watched her frown "I have no idea … I know we once talked about children and I know you like kids … But I don't know, what if it's a boy?" she sounded scared.

"If it's a boy, he will grow up with the centaurs and become a very wise man. And about the rest, yes, I like kids, a lot … But this is you we're talking about. It's your choice and no mater what you choose, I'll be there for you," I leaned closer and kissed her softly, smiling when she sighed in relief. Pulling back again, Taya rubbed her belly before facing me again. "I don't know if I can … remove it … with the herbs," she said softly and I couldn't help the smile forming on my face. But something else came to mind, "will you be able to handle, ya know, how … it was created?"

Taya cupped my face "I'll be praying to Artemis to give the baby blue eyes and blond hair. As far as I care, you fathered it," I blinked before grinning "now that would be hard to explain to your moms, won't it?" I said, causing Taya to chuckle. I looked at her "I'm gonna be a daddy," Taya lifted an eyebrow before grabbing my hair and kissing me deeply "yes, you are," she murmured before her lips met mine.

So, I guess this explained the daughter I mentioned before. Yes, it was about the best news I ever heard. Comes right after Taya saying yes to my joining proposal! Of course, telling the family wasn't all roses. Morien was very happy, well the woman was always happy. Nyssa however was extremely silent, too silent. And I learned that silence was never good with my mother-in-law ...

That same evening, I sat outside watching the stars. Taya had already gone to bed, but I felt way to giddy to sleep. I heard movement besides me and looked to see Nyssa leaving their hut and coming towards me. She sat down next to me and was again silent. Long moments later, the warrior spoke, "I wasn't born as an Amazon, ya know? I was once a slave …" she started and I was caught off-guard, I didn't know this "… One day, now 22 years ago, I found out I was pregnant from my owner. I was so scared and helpless, but I knew that I didn't want my child to grow up like I did, to be born and raised as a slave. So I ran as far away as I could, into the woods and almost died from exhaustion and hunger. A troop of amazons found me and brought me here where I healed physically. But mentally, I was a wreck. I was carrying the child of the man I hated more than life itself," she stopped and finally looked at me. I was speechless "I don't understand, I thought both of them where fathered by a friend from the centaur village?" Nyssa sighed "That's what I told them, Taya doesn't know this and neither did Lyanna. It's a coincidence that they had the same eyes," she said and silence fell over us.

"But you loved Lyanna," I said after a while and saw a sad smile spreading on Nyssa's face "Yeah, I did … but that's because one little hunter decided to steal my heart. Morien healed me and taught me to love again. If it wasn't for her, who knows what might have happened," she looked at the sky again. "Why have you told me this?" I wondered. "To tell you that things will get rough. Taya's child was conceived by rape. That's hard to accept for the both of you. Love her, Nikι. Be there for her," Nyssa stood and with one last glance, she walked to her own hut. I sat in the darkness for hours, trying to grasp what I had just been told. Shaking me head, I stood and stretched my now sore muscles and went inside to get some sleep. Thoughts and questions still swirled in my head, disappearing a little when I wrapped my form around my sleeping lover. We'd make it, one way or another. I was sure of it.

And we did. As days turned into weeks into months, we found each other again. Taya became more beautifully than ever, even though she thought I had lost my mind saying things like that. There was just something about her now, like she glowed. Hard to explain. Anyway, about seven months later, Saras asked us to come see her ...

Saras was running her hands gently over Taya's belly as a smile lit her face. She stood up and looked at us, "I thought this was a special pregnancy," she said, causing me to jump a little, thinking it was bad. Saras chuckled and held up her hand. "Hold your horses, big bad warrior," she walked to another chair and sat down, I moved closer to Taya and grabbed her hand. Saras watched us with a big grin and that was working on my nerves. "What??" I almost yelled. The healer chuckled again before starting with her explanation, "I asked you two to come and see me because, having seen so many pregnant women, I though Taya was a little large to be only seven months. So I wanted to be sure nothing was wrong. And no, nothing is wrong … On the contrary, I think you should start working on another crib. You're having twins," Taya gasped and grabbed my hand, before smiling and pouncing on me. Now, I don't know if any of you have had a pregnant woman pounce on you before, but let me tell you that it wasn't pleasant.

"Taya, honey, I can't breathe!" I said from my spot on the ground to my smiling lover who sat on my chest. Taya grinned and shifted a little, giving me the opportunity to crawl out from under her and get up. I helped Taya to get on her feet and hugged her tightly. "Twins?" I said, still at awe. Taya looked into my eyes and nodded. I ducked my head and kissed her softly, only stopping when hearing someone cough.

"Cut it out, you two. Enough time for that later," the healer said "Get going. Oh and Taya, lots of rest and no heavy work Ok?" We both nodded and walked outside.

Evening found us nestled in each other's arms. My hand caressed Taya's swollen stomach softly and I heard her sigh. "I love you," I murmured and leaned closer to place a soft kiss on her lips. Taya smiled softly and ran a hand through my hair as I placed my head on her shoulder. After a moment of silence, it was Taya who spoke, "I still can't believe it … twins. In a matter of months we're going to have two babies." Right that moment, I felt something move beneath my hand "She kicked!" I said enthusiastic. Taya chuckled softly and smiled at me "Be glad you don't feel them kicking inside towards my kidneys. One of them is sure to be one hell of a warrior."

I sighed and returned to my position "I think I have an idea for a name," I said softly and Taya answered with a cautioned Ok. I chuckled softly "I thought of Lyanna for a while, but I think that would be too hard on Mom. So, how about Lysa?" I turned to look at Taya, who now carried a bright smile. "I love it!" she said and pulled me on top of her for a deep kiss that soon led us to other, very pleasant and satisfying activities that lasted well through the night.

And so life went on for another two months. There where days when I trained much longer than normal, just to stay away from Taya's temper. One night, she made me sleep on the floor because I left my jacket on the floor. My back hurter like Tartarus in the morning, but that was soon forgotten when I found Taya crying next to me, telling me that she was sorry over and over again. Hormones, I guess. I made another crib, carved out of half a tree and filled with the softest of skins and decorated with little carved animals on the sides. Then, one night everything changed. I felt Taya shake my shoulder and when my blurry blue eyes met hers she said 'Honey, I think my water broke' …

Literally falling out of bed, I grabbed some clothes and almost broke my neck trying to get them on. "Nikι, honey! Calm down!" Taya said, trying to sound calm, though I saw pain etched on her face. Finally getting my boots on, I ran to the door "I'm getting your Moms and Saras!" I yelled before disappearing.

Running next door, I banged the door hard and moments later, a very disheveled Nyssa appeared. "QuickTayaBabyComing," I said quickly, not realizing that my sentence made absolutely no sense. Nyssa looked at me and murmured "Huh?" before being pulled back into the house by a fully dressed Morien "Get Saras and try to talk like a grown-up," the little hunter said and rolled her eyes "Warriors …"

I ran towards the healers hut, only stumbling over the loose laces on my boots twice. Reaching the hut, I banged on the door and was surprised when a fully dressed and ready Saras walked out. "I heard ya coming a mile away," the elderly woman said as she grabbed a bag. On the way back, I slowed my pace a little, knowing that Saras wouldn't be able to keep up otherwise. But when the hut came into sight, I couldn't help myself and ran the last short way towards my home.

Inside, I found Taya in bed with Morien holding her hand and a very uncomfortable looking Nyssa pacing next to them. I made my way over to the bed and kissed Taya softly. She gave me a soft smile just as Saras came barging in. "Aren't those babies born yet," she said and chuckled when Taya replied with "I wish".

Saras pointed towards me "Go sit behind her and support her back. And Taya, feel free to bite tough guy there and share the pain," the healer started to laugh at my expression. Surely she didn't meant that literally? But when Taya's next contraction hit, she latched onto my arm, causing me to howl instead of her.

"Now that's one big happy family," Saras said as she settled herself between Taya's legs "Ok girls, let's get this over with. Taya when the next contraction hit, push as hard as you can."

And so it started. For me, it passed like a blur. Taya kept biting or hitting me and I was sure to have the marks to prove that in the morning. But about a long hour later, a strange scream pierced the air. "It's a girl!" Saras yelled above the child's wailing. Taya grabbed on to me and I looked down into her teary eyes with a big smile. Saras handed the baby to a proud Morien and turned back to us "We're not done yet. There's another one ready to greet the world." Just at that moment, Taya moaned again in pain, reminding her that it was indeed not over.

Seeing that she was about out of strength, Saras told me to push on her stomach when the next contraction hit. I did and moments later another howl was heard. Taya fell back into me with a loud, exhausted sigh as Saras showed the other baby. Another girl!

Taya looked up at me and smiled when I placed a soft kiss on her forehead. Moments later the afterbirth was out and Taya fell asleep in my arms. I crawled from under her and tucked her in with another pillow. Stretching, I noticed the trail of blood running down my arm "she bites," I murmured and heard the three other adults snicker.

Saras stood up and walked towards the cribs and Morien walked towards me. She took some bandage and water. Placing that on the table she pushed me down into the chair and cleaned the blood away "I placed a few of those marks on Nyssa too, all those years ago. She still wears them proudly," the hunter said with a chuckle and I looked towards Nyssa who showed me a scar on her shoulder.

When Morien finished, Saras bid us goodbye as well. The babies were healthy and Taya would be Ok, sore but Ok. I walked over to the bed and picked my sleeping lover up while Nyssa and Morien changed the sheets. Taya didn't even wake up when I changed her clothes and tucked her in completely. With a kiss on her lips, I turned to Morien who was ready to leave. "Thanks Mama," I said and was rewarded with a hug "If there's anything, we're just next door, Ok?" she said and with a smile, she left the hut, Nyssa not far behind.

All alone now, I walked over to the cribs and stared at the two bundles there. The first born, who would be named Lysa, had a big head of dark reddish hair, just like her mom. Her sister however, had blond hair. Like me! I touched the blond head in amazement and at that moment, dark blue eyes opened. I was sure my jaw had fallen when seeing those eyes that where just like my own. The eyes closed again and the little girl fell back asleep. Smiling tenderly, I pulled the blanket a little higher "Lysa and Shayne" I whispered softly and ran my fingers over the deer marking carved on the cribs "Thank you, Artemis ... Keep them safe."

With that, I shrugged off my boots and jacket and crawled behind Taya into the bed. Wrapping my arms around her, I kissed her temple. "God, I love you," I murmured before placing my head next to hers on the pillow and drifted off to sleep.

Some time later, I felt fingers tracing the scar on my face. I opened my eyes slowly and found tired violet eyes watching me. "You Ok?" I asked softly. And Taya smiled "yeah, I'm just happy" she said and turned around to look towards the cribs "I want to see them"

Smiling, I stood and walked over to Taya's side of the bed. Helping her up, we walked the small way over to the cribs. Both of them were sleeping beautifully and Taya sighed softly. "By Artemis, they're beautiful" she said and I placed a soft kiss on her temple. Lysa started to shift and opened her little eyes before making little, hungry sounds. Taya gasped "she's got your eyes!" she said as I helped her back to sit on the bed. Walking back, I awkwardly took the small bundle from her crib and handed her to Taya. The girl grew silent instantly, but from behind me, the other one started to wake.

Again, I took little Shayne into my arms and walked over to the bed. Sitting across Taya, I watched her feed Lysa with awe. She was smiling towards the baby and glanced towards me. I smiled back and softly ran my fingers along the little blond head in my arms. A few moments later, Taya motioned for me to take Lysa and give her Shayne.

I sat next to them against the headboard, holding a sleeping Lysa in my arms. Taya looked at me with wonder in her eyes "Shayne looks just like you. The gods have listened to my prayers. Both have your gorgeous eyes." Leaning over, I kissed Taya on the lips "thank you, I love you," I said with a tear running down my cheek. Taya reached out with her free hand to wipe it away and pulled my head down on her shoulder "I love you too, forever," she said and I sighed. Lysa was sleeping in my arms and Shayne fell asleep as well, having finished her meal. This was pure bliss.

A soft knock on the door interrupted this and I called out to enter. Saras appeared and a huge smile lit her face when seeing us. "Truly a happy family" the healer said softly "I just came to check. Is everything alright?" We both nodded and Saras stepped closer to take a good look at the babies "yeah, I think so too," she looked towards the wound on my arm and snickered again. This caused Taya to take a look as well and she gasped "Oh god … I'm so sorry honey!" she said after spotting the dark ugly bruise with a clear imprint of teeth marks in the center. Smiling, I said, "it's Ok, love … I'll wear it with pride, like your mom did!" I kissed her softly and she smiled one of her brilliant smiles again.

Saras chuckled and ducked to pick Lysa up "let me put those two back in their beds so the moms can catch a few hours of sleep themselves. You know the entire tribe is itching to meet their two new sisters?" the healer said and placed Lysa in the crib. She took Shayne from Taya and tucked her in as well. Laughing at our expressions, she left the hut.

Taya and I looked at each other and smiled. "The whole tribe?" I said and shook my head when Taya nodded. Falling back on the bed, I smiled when Taya cuddled on my chest "the whole tribe," she repeated and chuckled when I groaned. Mere moments later, I was out like a light …

Taya wasn't lying about the whole tribe thing. I knew that for sure now the last warrior left the hut. The entire day passed as warrior, guards, shamans, the cooks and whatnot passed through to meet the two new tribe members. All were surprised to see that Shayne looked so much like me. They said it was a blessing from Artemis and I am inclined to believe them. Ephiny and Solari passed around noon to congratulate us and speak about the ceremonies that would make my daughters part of the tribe for real. They would be held in two days.

I let myself fall onto the bed in exhaustion and watched Taya tuck the sleeping Lysa in. She leaned over carefully and kissed them both before taking her place next to me. "What a day," she said softly. I turned my head and placed a kiss on her lips, feeling her succumbing to sleep.

I lay awake for a long time, holding my love tightly. I guess I had started to realize today that I had no idea how to take care of such small children and I was scared to death of making a mistake. Sighing, I ran my fingers through Taya's soft hair. "I hope I don't disappoint you, my love … and I hope that I won't ever disappoint them," I whispered into the night before closing my eyes and waiting for sleep to come.

I became a parent those days! And believe me when I say that it wasn't easy. Lysa and Shayne where baptized the Amazon way. The high priestess asked Artemis to see them as ours, as true Amazons, and to keep them safe from harm. They both were marked with deer blood on their temples, something that was one of the most sacred rituals of the tribe. It was said to make them strong and wise. And maybe it worked, but let's not get ahead of the story.

It took me weeks to get back to my normal self. Taya was almost completely healed and took care of the children most of the day while I returned to my classes. In the afternoon, she taught me how to become a better mom. Well, getting me to believe that I was a good mom actually. The first time I bathed Shayne myself, I felt so happy I could cry.

"They don't break so easily, Nikι," Taya said after I had dressed little Shayne and placed her back in her crib. I sighed deeply "I know, I'm just scared of making a mistake." Taya smiled and gave me a soft kiss "I love you, you know," she said "but you won't make a mistake. You're good with older kids and you'll be good with our babies as well." Kissing her back, I murmured a "thank you". She believed in me and from that moment on, I started to believe in myself a little more as well.

Later that day, I sat outside, carving away on a piece of wood. I was finishing a deer that would be the children's first toy. Half an hour later, I scraped away the last errant pieces and blew the dust away. Looking at it closely, I smiled brightly. Who would have thought that one day I'd be sitting here carving wooden animals for my children?

Not able to erase my smile, I walked inside and wrapped my arms around Taya standing by the cribs. I gave her the deer.

"Oh love, it's beautiful," she said and turned to look at me "but not as beautiful as you." With one of her famous smiles, she placed the toy on the shelf between the cribs. Turning back to me, she crabbed the back of my neck and pulled my head down for a steaming kiss "I think you deserve a little reward for this," she said while pushing me down on the bed. And what a reward it was …

And so life went on. The children grew faster than we realized and about a year later, you could clearly see how different the two would become. Shayne was more than a foot taller than her twin sister and had a head full of curly, blond hair. Lysa, on the other hand, had straight reddish brown hair. But both of them had the same dark blue eyes. They also had the same personality. Both were very sweet, but true rascals. Though they still couldn't walk without assistance, they managed to get into trouble. Like sneaking into the cook's hut and stealing cookies.

We now lived in Nyssa and Morien's hut because it was bigger. I was first planning to add a part onto ours when the mom's suggested a trade. They had no need for a two-bedroom hut. After some consideration, we agreed and moved.

It was a few months after the move when my family and I went for a walk to the playground. We installed Shayne and Lysa between the flowers to play with their wooden toys. I had carved them quite a lot during this year, but many were gifts from our friends, like the black wooden panther that Eponin made.

Taya and I snuggled a little further and watched them play. Other children, some around the same age, some a little older, arrived to play, watched closely by their mothers and occasionally by a father. This was a place were men were allowed. I could see Shayne look towards the bigger kids who where running around and she frowned. I nudged Taya to look as well. Shayne grabbed her sister and slowly pulled herself up before taking a few unbalanced steps. Then she turned towards us with a big smile on her face. Lysa, not wanting to be left out, copied her sister and was soon standing. Both of them walked towards us in the trial and error way. They fell, got up, took a few steps and fell again.

I held out my arms when Shayne jumped into them giggling. Lysa did the same with Taya. "I'm so proud of you two!" Taya said, giving both a kiss. I messed up their hair, causing them to giggle again "yeah, rascals, me too!" Lysa jumped on me and started babbling in that language that adults can't understand. Shayne started to join and soon both were telling me a very interesting story. I was pretending to understand it all, nodding and saying thinks like "No! you didn't … wow … really?" Taya chucked and I saw the love in her eyes when glancing up at her.

I looked up when hearing my name and saw one of the royal guards approaching "Regent Ephiny is looking for you," the woman said and I sighed before rising. Placing the kids next to Taya, I leaned down and kissed all three of them "be right back," I said with a smile and followed the guard back to the village.

I found Ephiny in the meeting hut and she motioned towards the guards to leave us alone as soon as I entered. Frowning, I took a seat and waited for the Regent to begin.

Ephiny sighed "how are the kids?" she asked with a weak smile. I stood "cut to the chase, Ephiny. I know you too well for small talk. Why did you call me here? and the kids are fine," I sat back down with a small smile which Ephiny returned.

"The perimeter guards intercepted a man a little while ago. He said he was a messenger with a message for Nikι, daughter of Nikos," the regent said and showed me a folded piece of scroll. My frown increased, there where not many who knew I still lived … or were to find me. "Who gave him the message?"

"He said that it was a huge black mountain of a man that scared him to death, but was surprisingly friendly. The man gave no name, but said that you'd know who he was." And I did know "Volk," I murmured, knowing only one man that fit that description. Ephiny nodded and handed me the note. I unfolded it and immediately recognized the bold, angular, almost unreadable script.

Nikι,

Lloyd gone crazy
Destroy Serai
Many killed
Can't stop him
Need help!

Volk

I closed the note and closed my eyes with a sigh "did you read it?" I asked Ephiny, who hesitated. "Yes, I have … but I don't understand it." This caused a chuckle to escape me "which is normal, Volk can barely read or write. We taught him a little," I said and finally looked up "it means … nothing." Standing, I started to leave when Ephiny stopped me "if you're planning something, I want to be the first to know. Remember who you are, Nikι … an Amazon!" Not responding, I walked out while the guards entered again. Moments later, my keen hearing picked up the Regent telling one of her guards to keep an eye on me. Shaking my head, I decided that I shouldn't go to Taya right now. I needed to think first.

So I headed towards the lake, where I settled down on a rock. I knew perfectly what my old friend meant with his note … but now I had to do something that I really didn't want to do … leave.

It was close to nightfall when I finally made it home. I met with Eponin earlier to discuss some things and now I had to face my lover who, by the look on her face, wasn't happy. "Where have you been? The children are already in bed," she asked before I could even take off my jacket. I took a deep breath to get myself together and faced her with a sweet smile "I know love, I'm sorry … I was chatting with Eponin and kinda lost track of time," I said while walking over and kissing her deeply. Taya pushed my shoulders back "for five hours! You chatted for five hours," it was clearly that she didn't believe me, but right now I didn't care.

I growled and stepped closer, grabbing her face firmly but gentle. I kissed her with all the raw emotion building inside of me. Moments later, I released her but kept my hungry stare on her delicious form. "By the gods, Nikι … what's gotten into you," she said while catching her breath, her eyes darker than normal. I grinned and moved forward, causing Taya to step back until she fell onto the bed "Lust," I said while crawling towards her. Leaning down, I reclaimed slightly swollen lips and doing so, ignited passion that would last well into the night.

Hours later, I lay exhausted with an evenly exhausted Taya on my chest. "Wow," my love murmured and looked into my eyes "not that I'm complaining, but what brought this on?" I smiled and brushed my lips with hers tenderly "nothing special. I just missed you," I answered, hoping she believed me. Taya frowned but thankfully decided to let it go. "What did Ephiny want?" she asked after a moment. "Uhm, something about my classes. Nothing really."

Taya shifted to lay completely on top of me "are you hiding something from me?" she asked, question in her eyes. I smiled up to her "no, my love … never," I said, wincing on the inside at the lie. Pulling her face towards me, I kissed her while my other hand started to caress the well known path up and down her soft body. She moaned into my mouth and started to buck her hips into my body. Rolling us both over, I initiated another round of going to Elysia and back.

Some time later, I stood and watched her sleep with tears in my eyes. Silently, I dressed and moved into the main room, where I sat down with a candle to write.

My love,

When you read this, I will long be gone. This afternoon I received a message from an old friend, a cry for help, that I simply can't ignore. To fully understand it, I need to tell you something that I should have told you long ago but was too scared to do so: I have an older brother!

You probably already figured it out by reading the note, but his name is Lloyd and he is a very dangerous and hateful man. He hated me since we were children, because father always loved me more and in the end gave me the command over his army. I don't know the complete story about why he did that, just that it had something to do with a prophecy. An oracle once told my father that only a daughter would be able to grow into a warrior that would make his army greater than ever. Lloyd left the day he made me commander and I haven't heard from him since then.

But now it seems that he has to be stopped. And only I know him enough to do so. He is destroying Serai, which is a small city near the border of the Roman empire. It's the city we were born in and I can't let it be destroyed by him.

You probably think that I'm the greatest coward in the known world now, to tell you all this like this. But I just couldn't bear to see the look of disappointment on your face. For that, I am sorry. I guess a coward is what I really am deep inside ...

I don't know if I will be able to stop Lloyd, but I have to try my hardest or too many people will get hurt. He could find out about you and the children and I would never forgive myself for that. That is also why I go alone. I don't want any of my friends getting hurt by this. Don't let Ephiny send anyone after me, they won't find me.

I can only hope you'll someday understand. Just know that I love you and the children very much and my thoughts will be with you, forever.

My eternal love,
Nikι

Finished, I looked down at the places where my tears had fallen on the paper, placed where the ink was slightly smudged. Putting away the writing material and blowing out the candle, I placed the letter on the desk with a rose on top that I had plucked earlier. Wiping my eyes, I walked into the other bedroom and towards the two cribs. I softly placed a kiss on each of my children's heads "take care of Mama if I don't come back," I whispered "and please don't forget me. I will always be with you." Fresh tears ran down my cheeks as I turned and walked towards my bedroom. Quietly, I sat down next to a sleeping Taya and pressed a soft kiss on her lips. "I love you," I whispered "and I'm sorry."

With that, I stood and walked outside, glancing back one last time towards the other half of my soul. Then, I left the hut, choking down a new load of tears and headed towards the woods where Eponin would be waiting.

I had regained some control when I spotted my friend in the darkness. Eponin held the reigns of a saddled horse. "You're sure about this?" the woman asked, her tone hinting that she'd prefer that I said no. Taking the reign, I rubbed the horse's nose "I have to Eponin … To protect my family." Eponin sighed but handled me a saddlebag. "I got it from a friend in the centaur village. Civilian clothes. I added some food for a few days and water for both you and the horse." She fastened the bag on the horse before turning to me: "you do realize that Taya will kill me if she finds out that I helped you with this. Half the tribe will." I smiled sadly and pulled my friend in for a hug. "Be safe, Nikι … and come back to us," I was surprised to hear Eponin's voice tremble. Without more words, I mounted the horse "I'll try," was the last thing I said before speeding off.

I didn't look back, afraid that I'd lose my wits and turn back. I could feel the warm wetness of my tears together with an ache in my chest as I sped down the path where there were little guards at this time of the night. Spotting the guards, I moved a little into the woods and slowly passed them. Once back on the road and out of Amazon territory, I sped up again. There lay a long journey ahead of me to Serai, but first I needed to get as far away from here as possible.

This was again one of those big turns in someone's life. I really didn't want to go, but had no choice. It took me long weeks to reach the borders of the destroyed land. Long weeks filled with homesickness, fear and loneliness. The surrounding villages were no more. All were leveled to the ground, no living soul could be seen until Serai. With my heart in my throat, I entered the remains of the city I was born …

I had cloaked myself, but soon realized that it was useless. The remaining people didn't even glance at me. They just stared into the distance or walked in meaningless circles. I couldn't blame them; they lost about everything they'd owned. Further inside the city, more buildings stood and I halted in front of the inn.

I tied my horse to a beam and entered the place where I got drunk for the first time. Eyes did fall on me now, probably because they don't see many travelers around these days. I walked over to the bar, took a seat and ordered a drink. My eyes scanned the room and I almost keeled over when spotting three familiar figures at a table in the corner. The three were men, one black and the other two fair with flaming red hair.

They were so busy discussing something that they didn't saw me approaching. "Is this a private conversation or can anyone join in?" I said and immediately three pair of eyes fell on me. I removed my cloak and sat down at the table. Volk smiled brightly and slapped me on the shoulder. Skeld and Liam, the two red haired brothers, held out their arms for a shake, which I did.

"By Odin, Nikι … we were starting to fear that you wouldn't come," Skeld said and smiled. "Now with you and Xena, your brother won't stand a chance," Liam added and my eyes widened "Xena?"

"Hello Nikι," the unmistakable alto voice said behind me and I turned to find the leather clad warrior behind me. Standing, I stepped closer and hugged my dear friend. "Xena," I said and then moved aside to hug the blond bard standing at her side. "Gabrielle. So good to see you! … My queen," I smirked at the last part, knowing that Gabrielle didn't like to be called by her formal Amazon title.

The three of us sat down at the table and the bard reached up to touch the scar on my face "what happened?" she asked. I shrugged "pike," I said with a smile that Gabrielle returned before we focused on the conversation.

"So Lloyd had a castle and an army just outside the city," Xena said. "And about a month ago, he just freaked and started killing everyone in his path. He took his army to the surrounding villages and … well, you saw what's left of them," Skeld added grimly. "We tried to stop them but couldn't. Three against a few hundred … I don't think so!" Liam looked down while he spoke, clearly ashamed that they didn't stop them. Volk finished the story with his booming voice, "so we send out for help. We heard that the warrior princess was around so we send a messenger. We had a hard time finding one that would deliver a message to the Amazons."

"I can see why," I added with a smirk. Turning serious again, I looked at the five people sitting at the table with me "I need to get to him, inside his castle. How are we gonna do that?" Xena smiled "I think I have a few ideas," the warrior said and started to explain her plan …

It was almost completely dark as the warrior and me gazed upon the castle. "You think it'll do?" I asked her. "The walls are cleanly built and steep, but climbable. Hopefully the 'distraction' will give us enough time to get to the top," she answered. Together, we waited for the show to begin. And just as the sun disappeared completely, the first explosion was heard. Skeld, Liam, Volk, Gabrielle and a bunch of other rebels where placing small amounts of gunpowder around the North side of the castle. Letting them explode, created the illusion of a great attack. They would soon start to throw makeshift spears and rocks also.

"Let's go," Xena said and both of us ran towards the south side of castle. Like two shadows, we started to climb up the slippery wall. We were about there when the gates opened and soldiers ran out towards the woods. They would find no one, since hiding places were prepared for the so-called army. Xena looked over the railing and quickly pulled herself onto the roof when all was clear. I followed seconds later.

We quickly found a way inside and split up, to slim the chances of being discovered. I followed the halls, sneaking against the walls, until I heard voices. Two men where chatting around the corner and I quickly knocked out the first and grabbed the second before he could utter a word. I dragged him into the other hallway and tightened my grip around his throat. "Ok, I'm only going to ask you once. Where is Lloyd?" I whispered in his ear. He refused, so I choked him a little until he started to speak "Throne room … third door down the hall," he sputtered and I threw him against the opposite wall, head first, knocking him out cold.

Moving further, I was surprised to find the third door unguarded and unlocked. I took my sword and entered silently. It was dark and I thought that I was lied to, until a scraping sound, that of a match being lit, filled the room. A candle was lit and in it's glow, I could easily see the platinum blond head that was unmistakable my brother's ... and also the dozen archers standing behind him.

"Nikι, how nice of you to drop in," he said and laughed. The archers pointed their arrows on me as Lloyd motioned towards my sword. I dropped it and winced when it hit the ground with a clang, the sound proving that I've been a fool and ran right into an ambush. I heard someone coming up behind me and closed my eyes, my thoughts with Taya, right before I felt the smack to the back of my head and sunk to the floor in oblivion.

I regained consciousness slowly, my head hurting like Tartarus. I didn't know how much time had passed, but looking up, I could see a small opening showing that it was light outside. Sitting up on the dirty wooden floor, I grabbed my head and groaned when I felt the spot where I was hit. Dried blood knotted my hair together and thinking to deeply make my head hurt. Cursing softly, I crawled over to a cot nearby and lay down. "What now?" I wondered. Lloyd would never let me go alive …

"Oh Taya, I'm so sorry I let you down," I whispered softy as a lone tear escaped me. I was starting to think that I'd never see her smile again. Then suddenly, a white flash filled the small cell and a woman dressed like an Amazon appeared. Sitting up too fast, I groaned again in pain, but remained seated. "My goddess," I said and Artemis smiled.

"I'm surprised you recognize me," the goddess said "I have not visited you yet, Nikι. Though you have called upon me a few times." I chuckled while still holding onto my head, afraid that it would fall off "who else would visit me here?" Artemis nodded and waved a hand and immediately, the pain in my head vanished. Looking up in amazement, I silently thanked the goddess.

"Don't thank me yet, Nikι. I'm not here for pleasure, just to give a little advice." I frowned at that, but the goddess continued. She held out her hand and a crystal bowl appeared, filled with what seemed to be water. She handed it to me and told me to look into it. "You have brought great sadness and fear upon my Amazons," she started and the water started to show an image of Taya. She got out of bed and looked around strangely. Walking into the main room, she found the note I left behind. Taya started to read and moments later, she stumbled into a chair, the note slipping from her fingers, sadness and surprise written on her face. The water swirled and started to show Taya sobbing on the bed with Ephiny and Solari trying to comfort her. It changed again to show Eponin and Ephiny in a heated discussion until Eponin had tears running down her face and Ephiny hugged her. The water changed one last time to an image of Taya and the kids playing on the bed, Taya's red eyes and watery smile spoke volumes.

"Stop!!" I let the bowl slip from my fingers and shatter on the floor as I jumped up. I turned towards the goddess angrily, the trails of tears on my cheeks "did you like torturing me like that!" I yelled, followed by more curses. Artemis looked at me but remained silent until I was finished. "I had to do this to show you once more what is waiting for you down there," she said softly "to show you that you have something worth fighting for. Don't give up, Nikι. Like my sister would say, love conquers all," she smiled.

I looked at her "why are you doing this?" I asked softly and Artemis sighed. "You are a remarkable woman, Nikι. You escaped death so many times, even when the Fates decided that your time had come you pulled through. You are one of the few mortals that really make their own destiny, one that the gods can't foresee ... And you were supposed to die one of these days after one of your brother's torture sessions. I'm offering you another chance. I can't do much, since this is strictly forbidden, just warn you and heal you. After this you're on your own. Know that Xena escaped the ambush and is making a new plan with the rebels," the goddess said and I dropped back on the cot in awe.

"Thank you, my goddess. I don't know if I can ever repay you," I said and wiped my face with the dirty white shirt I wore. Artemis smiled brightly "raise your two rascals to be true Amazons, that is thanks enough … Though, you know, that temple you have near the village … the woodwork is starting to rot." I nodded "I will start on it right away." With another smile, the goddess disappeared. I lay back down on the cot and closed my eyes. If they came to check on me, they should think that I'm still weak from my injury.

And about a half hour, they did come for me. Four men entered the cell and chained me up before escorting me through the caste towards the throne room. Standing straight, I faced my brother, who sat on the throne. "Nikι, my little sister, how are you? Hope the head doesn't hurt too much?" he said, his voice dripping with so much sarcasm it made me sick. "I could say the same to you, Lloyd … Did it hurt when you fell on your head and bounced back a couple of times?" A soldier gave me a hard shove, but I could swear that I heard snickering behind me. Lloyd stood and walked before me, I started to laugh when I had to look down at him. Even Taya was taller than my brother. He turned red and nudged his head at a guard, who pushed me to my knees. Lloyd grinned evilly and slapped me and I started to wonder how he could ever run this army, Shayne could hit harder than he did!

Lifting one of my eyebrows, I stared into crazy blue eyes and knew how he did it. They feared him! Lloyd looked at one of his men "take her to the play room," he said with a smirk. Two men grabbed me and led me back through the halls. We went down many stairs and I must admit that I started to feel a little scared. The soldiers halted in front of a heavy metal door and another soldier pushed it open. They led me inside and onto a little platform in the dark room. Light was created by large torches and I gasped realizing what Lloyd meant by 'play room'. This was his torture chamber. The soldier pushed me on my knees and released my chains to be replaced by chains that hung from the ceiling. The chains were pulled a little higher, so that my arms where secured high above my head.

I could hear Lloyd entering by his chuckles and heard the men leaving and the door lock. Lloyd walked before me, fingering the whip in his grasp. "I wish father could see us now," Lloyd started. "He and that cursed prophecy. Only his daughter would be capable of leading his army, instead of his first-born son. Wish he could see my army now." He started to walk around me while he talked. "Do you know what else that whore of an oracle told him? That his son would go crazy before his 30th birthday. And you know what? That whore couldn't have been more wrong. I see things very clearly now, my purpose in life … but you wouldn't understand …" I heard the snapping sound and winced, even if it didn't hit my skin. "Daddy was wrong to make you general … You blew it and betrayed us. You're an Amazon now, right? I heard," he said and now stood before me. He ran his hands across the bracelet on my wrist. "And a married one to boot … You know what; after I'm done here in Serai, I might go to Amazonia and seek this sister-in-law of mine. I'd show her what a real man could do." He looked towards my arms that where now tensed in anger.

I wrapped my arms around the chains, even though I could never break them, and growled. He laughed and walked behind me again. "That's a delicate subject, isn't it? That whore of yours," I could feel the shifting in the air as he drew the whip back and winced when he brought it down across my back. He laughed like a maniac and ran his fingers down the cut. "Look dad, your super daughter bleeds!" he yelled and brought the whip down again and again. He kept on laughing as he whipped me over and over again. Fortunately for me, I passed out moments later…

I floated in and out on consciousness, but awoke completely when hearing men shout outside the room. The unmistakable sound of swords clashing followed and moments later the heavy door opened.

"Nikι!" Xena kneeled before me and cupped my face. I grinned weakly "what took you so long?" I asked, my voice weak but carrying a teasing tone. Gabrielle kneeled next to Xena and supported me while Xena cut the chains. I groaned in pain, but tried to suppress it for now "what's going on?" Xena helped me stand. "The army is deserting in great numbers. The rebels decided on a frontal, old fashioned attack and the remaining soldiers are either dead or captured. Lloyd locked himself up in his throne room," the warrior said and we started to climb the stairs, Xena supporting me.

We approached the throne room where Skeld, Liam and Volk where waiting. All three gasped at my condition. I shrugged Xena off and walked on my own towards the door. "Bash it in, give me a sword and let me kill the bastard," I said. "I don't think that's such a good idea, boss … Your back has been turned into shreds," Liam said and Volk moved to block my path. "It's my brother … I will end his miserable life right now!" I took Skeld's sword before he could stop me and looked at Volk with fire in my eyes. The black man nodded, he knew better than to argue with me when I had that look in my eyes, and swiftly kicked the door in. I moved inside, closely followed by my friends.

Lloyd was cowering near the window, his almost white hair shining in the glow of the fire. He held his sword and walked over to me. "You whores … all of you!" he yelled and slashed out with his sword. I sidestepped it. He turned and attacked again, I blocked with my sword. Giving a crazy scream, he held the sword above his head and ran towards me. I pierced his chest with my sword and watched his eyes grow wide. The sword fell from his grip as he staggered backwards. "But …" was the last he uttered before he fell to his knees and to the side. I felt my friends stepping closer and Xena's hand on my shoulder. "It's over," I said and started to feel fresh blood soak my shirt. My legs buckled from under me and Xena caught me before I could hit the ground again. I looked up into light blue eyes "I'm gonna pass out now," I mumbled and watched Xena smile "you do that," I heard the warrior say before darkness captured me again …

I felt wetness on my face and neck and the soft caressing of a cloth. Opening my eyes, I spotted Gabrielle sitting on the bed next to me, gently bathing my skin. I lay on my stomach and when I tried to shift, I felt the burning on my back. "Try not to move much," Gabrielle said and smiled "how are you feeling?" I smiled back and tried to shrug, stopping when it hurt too much "I've seen better days. I feel like I've been run down by one of those plows the peasants use, including the mammals that pull it."

Gabrielle chuckled softly "well, you're going to feel much better in a few days. Xena had to put a few sutures in your back, though … But most of the cuts were not very deep and will heal with the salve and time." Her gaze moved to the other side and by the flickering in her green eyes, I knew who just entered. "Hi Xena," I said and looked at the warrior as she moved to the other side of the bed. "And before you ask, I'm feeling like warmed over centaur dung … But I'll live."

"I see that!" Xena exclaimed with a grin. She sat down next to Gabrielle and placed a kiss on the bard's temple. She whispered something in her ear and Gabrielle gave a nod before saying her goodbyes and leaving the room. Xena looked at me for a moment "the rebels have asked me to ask you what you want them to do with Lloyd's body," she said softly and I closed my eyes for a moment. "I want them to burry him in the family tomb, if that's still standing?" Xena nodded with a small smile "they told me that Lloyd never dared to touch it, fearing a curse from his ancestors. You sure you want him there?" I thought for a moment and then gave a nod "he was my brother. He couldn't help turning mad, it was his destiny as it was mine to stop him. Besides, I will never rest there. My parents deserve to have at least one of their children laying there."

Xena stood with a smile "I'll go tell them. You try and get some more sleep. Gabrielle will bring you something to eat later." With that the warrior was gone and left me alone to my thoughts, who were with one feisty short Amazon. "She'll kill me," I murmured, before closing my eyes and falling into a healing sleep.

The next day found me outside the mausoleum. I gritted my teeth with every step, but felt much better than yesterday. My friends stood behind me, leaving me to my own pain for now. Slowly, I pushed the rusty door open and descended stairs into the cold, moist building. I ran my hands over the dusty nametags that hung on the wall to mark where graves were placed into the walls. The graves of my ancestors. Three tombs stood in the centre and I walked over to the most left one, my mother's. I placed both my hands there and tried to remember her, sighing when I failed.

"What was her name?" I turned and saw Gabrielle standing on the stairs. "Shana," I said softly "she died when I was little, I can't even remember her face." Gabrielle stepped closer "how did she die?" the bard asked. I shrugged "no one knows for sure. She just vanished one day. They found her body in the forest many days later. Everyone thinks my father did it, I know he did. The way he talked about her to me when I grew up … it was strange." I sighed and felt Gabrielle place her hand on top of mine. "Do you hate your father?" she asked and I shook my head "I am my father … no, I was my father, right?" I glanced beside me and saw Gabrielle smile. I realized that it was true. I may have done some horrible things when my father commanded them, but that was then and now is now. Now I'm an Amazon … and thinking that caused a great pulling deep inside.

I turned to Gabrielle "I wanna go home … I miss her," I said. Gabrielle chuckled "I can understand that … You mind if Xena and I tag along? We've been meaning to visit our friends." She started to walk towards the stairs and I followed, glancing back at the other coffin. "I forgive you, brother … May your soul finally find peace," I whispered and then walked outside.

Saying goodbye to Skeld, Liam and especially Volk was hard. They told me that they'd stay here for a while and help rebuild the city and I made a request. I asked for the mausoleum to be locked and buried under the sand. The bloodline would die with me and through the path I have chosen, I would never rest here. Volk told me that he'd personally take care of it. And so I returned home, with Xena and Gabrielle by my side. It took nearly a month before we saw the first signs of Amazon land, mainly because I needed to rest a lot and couldn't take more that a few hours of riding at a time. The warrior and the bard didn't seem to mind, as they could enjoy a little vacation. Seeing them together made my heart ache. I finally changed back into my Amazon clothes, except for the shirt that protected my still tender back. Then, finally, we passed the borders and moments later, the first birdcalls where heard ...

We stopped moving and clasped our hands above our head, the signal of peace. Four masked guards came out of the trees. "By Artemis, Nikι, is that you?" a young guard said and removed her mask. I dismounted, still very stiff because of my back, and walked towards her "Nawera," I said and moved closer to give my old student a hug. The other guards, all young women that I once trained, removed their masks also and joined in, turning the simple hug into a group-hug. Xena coughed and the four guards looked up, their eyes widening when noticing who was with me. They all dropped and a chorus of "My Queen!" was heard. The warrior groaned "and Xena," she added herself, making Gabrielle laugh. I climbed back on the horse and we made our way to the village, the guards running through the trees before us.

Word of our arrival had reached the village first and several Amazons waited for us at the entrance. Some started to cheer, causing others to arrive to see what was going on. I dismounted and was immediately grabbed in a bear hug by Eponin. "Pony! … Air!" I yelled and was released, Eponin carrying a silly grin on her face. Ephiny arrived, closely followed by Solari. "I don't know whether to slap or to hug you," the Regent said and then her eyes fell beside me "but I think someone else is going to decide that." I followed her gaze and felt my breath catch in my throat when spotting a very determined Taya marching towards us. I stepped in her direction with a big smile, stopping inches from her. The look in her eyes should have warned me, but didn't, and I saw her drawn back hand too late. The slap echoed through the entire village, snapping my head back and knocking me on my ass. I was stunned and watched Taya march back towards the river. Cupping my cheek, I looked at the evenly stunned faces of the Amazons "I think I deserved that," I mumbled before crawling on my feet. I quickly followed Taya, hearing snickering behind me.

Taya stood facing the water and I could see her shoulders shake. I walked closer softly and placed a hand on her shoulder "Taya?" She pulled away but I took a step closer and tried again. This time she turned briskly and gave me a shove. I tripped over a loose rock and fell flat on my back, the hard uneven ground pressing in my tender flesh. I grimaced when a flash of pain passed through me and my back started burning. "Nikι?" Taya said softly, moving closer to me. I opened my eyes "I'm Ok, love," I said softly and slowly tried to get back on my feet, trying not to stress my back further. Taya grabbed my arm and helped me stand. She then took the back of my shirt and lifted it, gasping when she saw the crisscross scarring there. "By Artemis, Nikι … why didn't you tell me?" she said and started to sob, burying her head against my side. I reached for her and this time she didn't refuse my embrace. I buried my face in her soft hair and inhaled her scent, which I had missed dearly, and let my own tears slip. I was home again.

Much later, we were still at the river, now cuddled together at the shore. I had told Taya everything that happened, the fight, my brother, the whipping … everything. She cried for me and I kissed her tears away. I apologized over a hundred times for leaving like that and she said she understood. We rose and made our way back to the village, arm in arm. Passing the square, I was greeted by more Amazons and met up with Xena and Gabrielle.

"You two Ok?" Xena asked and I looked at Taya before nodding with a smile. The warrior touched my slightly swollen cheek and grinned "you can throw a mean punch, Taya. I'm impressed," she said making Taya blush. Taya looked into the distance and a huge smile threatened to swallow her face when seeing her moms approaching, each carrying one of the kids. "Nikι, look who's there?" she said softly and I looked.

As soon as they saw me, both rascals wiggled out of grandma's grasp and started running. I kneeled, wincing when the air was knocked out of me when they both jumped into my open arms. "Mommy!" Shayne yelled loudly, echoed by Lysa. I hugged them close and kissed both their little heads. I looked up at Xena and Gabrielle and saw the blank look on their faces. It was the bard who recovered first "Mommy?" she asked in surprise. This was probably the last thing they expected. I stood, holding my two babies in my arms, and looked at them. "Yes, this here is Shayne and this Lysa," I said, looking as both kids laid their heads down on my shoulders, studying the strangers closely.

Xena and Gabrielle congratulated us and after some more chatting; they left, heading towards the royal hut. My family and I headed home, where I received a lecture from Nyssa. After I swore never to do something like that again, they both gave me a hug and stood to leave. Morien turned to me "we'll take care of the children tonight," she said. I frowned, not knowing what was so special about tonight. Morien rolled her eyes "Your return, the queen's return … the party! … Not that we need an excuse to party, but it's nice to have one once in a while." This time I groaned. Amazons and there love for parties …

And so it went, the bonfire was lit, the drums started playing and the wine flowed. Ritual dancing to honor the queen was initiated and soon Taya had left me to go dancing. I chuckled and found Eponin with a mug of wine at the edge of the dancing circle. "I'm glad you're back," my best friend said with a smile. "You know what, Pony? It's good to be back," I answered and we smacked out mugs together. "So, how did it go?" she asked and I sighed "let's just say that I have no lose ends anymore." Eponin nodded and we continued watching the dance.

Taya grabbed my hand and pulled me on the dance floor with her. I was no dancer, but when you live with Amazons, you learn. For hours, we gyrated against each other and I truly enjoyed the feeling of her body against mine. I knew I'd hurt in the morning, but right now, I didn't care one bit. Taya pulled my head down for a kiss that made my knees turn into jelly "let's go home," she said huskily and I could only nod.

We stood in our bedroom, bathed in moonlight, as Taya slowly took off her clothes. She then stepped towards me and removed mine, being careful of my back. She trailed her hands over my body, leaving goosebumps in it's place. "I started to think that I would never have the chance to do this again," she said softly before pressing her body into mine. I lowered my head to hers and we kissed passionately, somehow ending up in the bed. I looked down into her eyes as she smiled wickedly before starting to move her hands to where they would give her full control over my body. I moaned her name as she delved into my very core, collapsing when tremors shook me to my soul. "I love you," I said "so very much." I started to kiss her neck, shoulders, breasts and soon had her crying out my name. None of us slept that night …

The next morning, I couldn't get out of bed. Taya stayed with me, rubbing soothing oils into my back, easing my pain. By noon, I could walk again with only a slight discomfort and we headed outside. I played with the children, chatted with friends and family and feeling very happy that I lived to see this. I realized what I could have lost and swore never to do that again.

A few more days passed like this, until Xena and Gabrielle were preparing to move on. "I'll miss you," I said honesty. Gabrielle smiled brightly and brought her staff down on mine. "You're getting good," I said and smiled back. Gabrielle halted and placed her staff down "we will miss you too, you're a good friend, Nikι and a good Amazon." Taking our stuff, we returned to the village. I needed some practice and so did the bard. The bard looked at me "I'm happy for you … you have amazing children. They're very smart and Shayne looks so much like you, she'll be an outstanding warrior one day … don't blow this, Nikι," she said and I smiled "I won't … Not even the gods can take this away from me. They're everything I am." Gabrielle nodded in approval and we continued our way back.

Morning came as we stood at the gates to say goodbye. I hugged both the warrior and the bard "maybe we'll see each other again someday," I said to them. "Who knows?" Xena answered just before mounting. She reached down and pulled Gabrielle behind her and with a last look, sped away to the next adventure.

"Yeah, who knows," I murmured with a grin, before making my way back home …

And so this next chapter of my life is concluded. The following years were spent in peace. My children grew to be healthy and indeed wise and strong. Even Lysa, who remained a head shorter that her sister, soon turned into a skilled fighter. I kept my promise to Artemis and tore out all the woodwork from the temple, replacing it with beautifully carved beams. Eponin helped me with the heavy stuff, but wouldn't believe the story about why I was doing this. My best friend found her better half as well, a very pretty woman named Kristi finally stole her heart and they joined not much later.

Life was good, peaceful, but I knew it couldn't last forever. Though I enjoyed every moment of it. Every moment filled with love and friendship, I treasured forever. What disturbed this time of peace is a story for another time. Now, I'm taking a very needed break ... Maybe till next time.

The end … you know it isn't!
