Part 5

A slumber party they had, with all of the children plus Carissa and the queen in the sitting room of the suite. The beds side by side with the TV on made for a fun evening. Alarica was growing bored without someone there to talk to. Her mother and sister were there, sure, but she wanted more. Telling her mother and sister she was going to ask for language lessons, she exited her room to visit Meschelein.

Meschelein was waiting with her door open for Alarica to enter. "It seems as though everyone likes to visit me tonight. Is there something I can do for you, Alarica?"

"That much, is it? Well, I came for a different reason entirely. I was wondering if you would still like to provide language lessons. We could trade for something if you like. If I have it, you can be sure it will be given to you."

"All you need to do is ask, no bartering necessary. Let us make ourselves comfortable in the sitting area."

And the lessons started, lasting until Alarica herself started yawning, and regretfully forced herself to end the lessons for the time being. She felt she would need a lot of rest in order to be presentable for tomorrow's introductions. Alarica and her daughters knew their routine well, and they had the confidence that everything would be perfect.

===========

After breakfast, everyone walked together to the building across the street. They entered the building and followed the signs to the check-in desk. "Good morning. How may I help you?" the lady at the front asked. She was an older woman, graying hair, perhaps enjoying her sweets a little too much, judging by the portly figure, and half glasses with a sort of southern accent.

"My name is Sovereign Cyan Alarica, and I am here to present the first part of our submission to the event today."

"Your name, please...?"

Did I not say that already? "Sovereign Cyan Alarica . . ."

"Samantha Ricos?" I can't wait to go home and soak in my tub. I had to wake up at 6 o'clock in the dang morning to be here.

So much for intelligence with age
. . . "Sovereign . . . Cyan . . . Alarica . . ."

"Sarika..?" Why do these foreigners have to come into our country anyway, with names we can't pronounce? This is our country. We have to keep it pure.

Of all the people to put into view and greet everyone . . .
Alarica took the name list out of the lady's hands and showed her the name that she had been saying all along. "That would be my name right there, fifth name from the top of the list."

"Oh, Severing Cain, well, why didn't you say that before? Just take those tags there and print your full name on it, with your country's name. Use the black marker, please. Next in line, please?"

Blowing out a relieving breath while walking to the door of the large meeting hall designated for World's Authorities, she started laughing at the thoughts she heard and knew that Meschelein was laughing for the very same reason, very discreetly, of course. Nobody else in the group knew why they were laughing, until Alarica explained it all as discreetly as she could.

Leonessa was having fun watching everything, and thought she might as well have just a little more fun. "Maybe you should have written Severing Cain on your nametag instead?"

Alarica just shook her head and continued to laugh. They approached their table, sixth table from the right, second row from the stage, a perfect table she thought. Looking at everyone's designated table, England, Germany, Soviet Republic, Africa, she felt it would be an exciting day today. Everyone sat down, that is, all except Alarica. She was standing at her table, looking around at the people, the clothes they were wearing, listening to the languages being spoken. Herself knowing several of the languages being spoken fluently, she laughed at everyone complaining of the same thing. The idiot woman at the greeting table . . . and it varied from there. She heard footsteps coming behind her and turned around to see that it was a woman in a business suit.

"Hello, and welcome to this event, the first annual World's Authorities meeting. I see you brought along with you a large crowd. My name is Natale Gaccione, and I am the chairperson for this meeting. If there is anything that I can do for you, please let me know. Just so that I have all of your names, could you tell me them, please?"

"I am Sovereign Cyan Alarica of Avalon." Alarica had given the signal for her family to rise from the table. "This is Lady Leonessa, Consors Breanne, Princess Claryvorra, Princess Melisent, Princess Emily, and my adjunct Elmira." As Alarica introduced them, they properly bowed towards their host.

"Thank you all for coming . . . if I could get the next group, please?"

As Bellona stood from the table, all of her family stood as well. "I am Sovereign Bellona of Andromeda; this is my wife Queen Clarissant, Consors Carissa, Prince Tristan, and Prince Tobias."

"Thank you all for coming. According to my notes, you will not be participating in the presentation, is that correct?"

"Yes, Ms. Gaccione, that is correct."

Natale Gaccione nodded as she wrote on her clipboard.

"The last group, if I could have your names, please."

Meschelein stood up, while the others remained seated. "I am Empress Regnant Meschelein of Tutela Isle. We are here to greet you in full respect of my country. At my side is Queen Nerissa, along with our Princess Gretel. On behalf of my country, I bid you peace with the hopes of having a prosperous future. May you find wisdom and fortune along your travels." Meschelein bowed fully in front of the host, showing her respect. Whether or not Natale Gaccione deserved such respect was not the point, it was etiquette, pure and simple.

"Thank you, I'm flattered," she said as her face turned red, and she laughed, not because it was funny, but because it was her habit to do so when she was embarrassed. "You will not participate in the presentation either. Am I correct?"

"No, we will not be making a presentation. We are here in support of my fellow."

"All right, thank you. The gowns and clothes that you are wearing are traditional, I would assume?"

Alarica spoke for everyone. "Yes, the dresses we are wearing are traditional clothing that would be worn to such an event."

"Good to hear, it makes the presentation that much more interesting, I believe. In about ten minutes, a bowl will be passed around containing papers with numbers written on them. Only chose a piece of paper if you are doing the presentation. The number you chose will be the order in which you will make your presentation. There will be servers coming by the table to take your drink orders in just a few minutes. Please, enjoy yourselves."

She walked away, leaving the group to their business, or the wonderful pastime of people watching. The bowl was passed around, and Alarica chose a number. She would be third to do a presentation. Breathing in and out to relieve the anxious feeling, she stared at the number, wondering to herself if she could make the number move.

==========

Carissa had been observing the crowd, looking at everyone's clothes, especially her own. She had never been much of a girly girl, really, but because of the life she had lived, she was forced to be something she was not. The dresses, the make up, the shoes, none of it was her . . . all of it just an illusion. As soon as her mother died, she cut her hair in rebellion, making a statement, a quiet declaration of 'this is who I am.' Her hair started growing again, and memory of Bellona dressing her and preparing her so that she would be properly presented came to mind. Bellona never showed much emotion. The passerby would miss it if they did not know how to look, but she remembered Bellona smiling as she prepared her consors for the day, especially as she combed her consors' hair.

Why is this of importance at the moment? Well, Carissa has learned a lot about who she is, and what she wants since meeting with Bellona, especially now as she stood at the table and listened to Bellona introduce everyone. A small inkling of pride, or something very close to it, she could feel within. That strange feeling combined with that voice in the back of her head that said, yes, this is who you are. Right at that moment, Carissa knew, without a doubt, that this was her family, old or new, it did not matter. Family was family, and she loved each and every one of them.

There was still time before the event started, and the boys and Gretel were only there long enough for them to be properly introduced. Carissa gathered the kids together to take them back to the hotel, along with Elmira and Queen Clarissant, to watch the children while the event was taking place. According to custom, the kids would attend such functions to learn proper behavior, but Alarica thought it best, with everyone's agreement, that their presence was no longer necessary at this time. There would be time later to learn; now, it was time to present her home to the best of her ability.

"Wait, Cari, couldn't we stay? Please? We'll be good. We just wanna stay until Miss Alarica is done. Could we?" Tristan's interest had been aroused after witnessing some of the items that were brought along, shields, clothing, helmets, any sharp, pointed weapon, including but not limited to spears, knives, or arrows, could not be brought. But the wide array of other items brought in captured his attention.

"Bell, it's your call. You know the boys will behave if you tell them to. They'll be here only until Sovereign Cyan Alarica has finished. There's probably a break at some point, and during the break I'll just scoop everyone up and watch 'em until five or six o'clock."

"It is six o'clock, and agreed. They may stay if they wish. You need to ask Empress Meschelein what she would like to do with her daughter."

Carissa got up from her chair, stepped around Meschelein's chair, and crouched down. "Hi, Empress Meschelein, I don't know if you heard, but Bellona has agreed to let the boys stay. I was wondering what you wanted to do about Gretel, because she is the youngest one in the group. I could take care of her during the presentation if you want. I don't mind."

Meschelein turned towards Nerissa to talk about the situation. An agreement was reached between the two that Gretel would not have the patience, nor would be able to understand the goings on of the presentations. "Yes, you may take Gretel with you. I believe there is a break about midway, I think at noon. Be sure to be back here at that time. Do you understand?"

"Be back by noon, got it." Carissa stood up and reached out her hand. Gretel let out a happy squeal as she hopped down from her chair to run towards Carissa. The best description of that moment was that she was happy. Carissa reached down to Bellona's bag looking for the keycard, remembering she had forgotten hers. "I just need the card to get in. I promise I won't lose it. I'll be back later," Carissa whispered. Bellona gave a slight nod.

==========

Carissa and Gretel walked up to the room to do two things. One was to give Carissa a chance to change clothes, and two was to get some money out of the safe that Bellona had put away. After changing clothes, Carissa wrote a quick note just in case Bellona returned while Carissa was out, and took $200 from the safe. Placing the money in a secure location on her body, and Gretel's hand in hers, she left the building looking for somewhere to buy play clothes for Gretel. Carissa did not think, based on the short time they had spent together, Gretel had clothes that could be thrown in the laundry after getting mud, pizza, paint, and whatever other evidence of her day showed up on her clothes. As she exited the hotel, she looked down either way of the street, and a big smile came to her face when she spotted the perfect place to get what she wanted.

New clothes in hand, as well as Gretel's, she walked into a nearby fast food restaurant to use their facilities. Carissa walked out happy and proud at what she had accomplished, because there was Gretel in her new top and bottom, shoes and socks as well, grinning and smiling. Dress clothes securely in the bag, and off they went to the park.

In the meantime

The assembly finally started, and Natale Gaccione stepped up to the podium located at center stage. "My name is Natale Gaccione. Good morning, and welcome to the first World's Authorities banquet. There are so many interesting people as well as countries represented today. A little while ago, a bowl was passed around for everyone doing a presentation to choose a number. That represents the order in which you will make your presentation for the rest of the banquet, so please do not lose that number. The counter that you see in the upper right corner of the curtains behind me will be the way we will be calling you up to the stage. Can everyone see the counter?" Seeing nods all around the room, she continued. "Please pay attention to the number that is shown. Today, we will be discussing the philosophy of your country. And as I walked around the room, I saw so many interesting things. I wish all of you good luck. Let the presentations begin."

"Thank you for your wonderful presentation." Natale Gaccione bowed in respect to the second presenter, the presenter bowing back. The audience started laughing at the ping-pong game of bowing to each other. "Now it is time for number three to make their presentation. Please hold your applause until the very end."

Alarica, Breanne, Princess Claryvorra, and Princess Melisent walked to the stage. "I am Sovereign Cyan Alarica of Avalon. Seventeen centuries ago, our founders, wanting to be free of their fathers' rules and male authority, came upon a stretch of land and formed a new nation, a nation of women. This nation was to be completely free from what they had escaped, hatred and society's ugly necessity for domination, no matter the consequences. Then, one day, some of those same founders were unhappy with the way things were being done in this new nation as well, and war broke out. They met on the battlefield, woman against woman, mother against daughter, sister against sister. They fought, not knowing they were fighting the very thing they had escaped . . . only this time, they were the controlling force. This is our story. The story of our great nation, my kingdom called Avalon. My kingdom was formed based on the philosophy that every woman has a right to chose, a right to fight, and a right to prove to anyone who chooses to challenge her that she is not only intelligent, but is proud to call herself a woman," Alarica began. She could read the minds of those in the audience, which were mixed feelings about this new country called Avalon, and she had expected that. What she did not expect though, was the thoughts of someone she had not expected to find here.

Once the presentation was done, they left the stage to go back to their table.

==========

After the last presenter was finished, Ms. Gaccione stepped up to the podium. "What a wonderful morning it has been to listen to all of you. Let's have everyone that presented this morning stand so we may appreciate their hard work. Let's give them a big round of applause." The room thundered with applause and then just as suddenly quieted. "It's now noon, and time for a break. We will all meet here again in one hour. Thank you again, everyone." Ms. Gaccione waved just before she stepped down.

At noon exactly, Carissa and Gretel waited for everyone outside of the room, everyone anxious for a break for one reason or another. Gretel was happily sitting on a chair, but just as she heard her mother's voice, she jumped up and ran to her, suddenly finding a boost of energy.

"What is this that you are wearing?" Meschelein asked in her native tongue.

"Hi there, I honestly don't know where she keeps all of that energy. Just when I think she's done for the day, her batteries suddenly recharge themselves and there she goes again. How was the presentation?"

"The presentations were educational. What are these clothes that she is wearing?" Meschelein was not angry at the change of clothes, just surprised to see her daughter in something else other than the dresses she wears at home.

"They're called play clothes. Carissa probably bought them to keep her dress from getting ruined." Nerissa was happy with the care that her daughter had received. New clothes, happy smile, everything was perfect except the scraped knee that happened at the park.

Meschelein noticed the knee. "Carissa, what happened to her knee? Did she trip on something?"

"Yeah, she saw the ducks running towards another girl with food in her hand. I think she was fascinated by them, and as she was running, she didn't notice the tree root sticking up out of the ground, and she tripped over it. I brought her back to my room and put something on it to help with the pain and to fight infection. It was Bellona's cure-all remedy that she brought along."

Meschelein was well aware of her daughter's scraped knees and bruised elbows, having fixed them many times herself. "Thank you for taking care of Gretel. We have one hour to find something to eat. They say this place has a café?" Meschelein said not sure if she understood the word correctly.

The rest of the group caught up with them and Carissa not only saw them coming, but felt their presence behind her as well. "Oh, I know what you're talking about. And if it's anything like the cafeteria I used to eat out of, believe me, you're better off taking your chances by waiting." Meschelein was about to say something when Carissa interrupted. "But . . ." Carissa held up her finger, "but there is a fast food restaurant right next door on the left side, and a family restaurant on the right side of this building as well," She informed them, using her fingers to point in the proper direction.

"What would you chose?"

"If I wanted to get back and see everything for the duration, I would take my chances with the fast food restaurant."

Meschelein looked at Carissa intently thinking what would be the best solution knowing everyone was hungry. "Let us go, then, to this fast food restaurant. Then tonight for supper we will eat at this family restaurant or at the hotel. Does that sound alright?" she asked, feeling out of place, not sure if she was choosing the best place to go. She just wanted to feed everyone with enough food to tide them over until the banquet finished for the night.

"Yeah, that sounds good. We'll do that, then." Turning around to everyone, Carissa asked, "Does that sound good? Does anyone have any other ideas?" Looking at everyone, not seeing any reaction, Carissa was wondering if she had said something wrong. "I think it is safe for me to say, we are all hungry, so any type of nourishment would be welcomed. Since you seem to know more about this town than the rest of us, you are appointed the lead," Bellona said, making a move motion with her hands.

Carissa rushed ahead of everyone else, earning laughter from Gretel.

===========

After they finished eating, everyone returned to the banquet hall. Carissa, Elmira, Tobias, Tristan, and Gretel left the rest of the party to return to the hotel. Elmira would take care of the boys while Carissa watched over a napping Gretel.

Gretel woke up two hours later, ready for the rest of the day. Elmira had taken the boys to her room across the hall so they would not disturb the baby after their time in the park. Carissa knocked on the door to let them know that they could come over now that Gretel was awake. Nobody answered the door. Gretel knocked this time, and said in her mother tongue, "I am awake now. Would you please open the door?" Carissa was proud of the tyke for speaking up even though she did not understand what was said. Then she heard someone approach the door to open it.

Once inside, she brought the boys back over to her room to be cleaned up and ready for supper. When the boys were done, she brought Gretel into the bathroom to give her a bath, with the understanding that the boys needed to behave. Once that was done, Gretel took her bath to change back into her dress clothes. Gretel, however, refused to put the dress back on. She wanted to wear her new clothes. Carissa would not mind, however, with the remnants of the park on the new clothes, she did not believe Meschelein nor Nerissa would appreciate seeing their daughter in the play clothes to go out to a nice supper. Hoping that it might work, Carissa picked up the dress and pointed to it, saying, "Momma." That seemed to settle Gretel, as she was now willing to put her pretty dress back on.

===========

While they were getting ready, the banquet hall was busy again, as the rest of guests gave their presentation. There were a couple of presenters, and as always, no matter the situation, that made the audience relax. So relaxed, in fact, that someone in the back of the room was heard snoring. Taking that as their cue to leave the stage, they did so, much to the relief of everyone present.

It was five minutes before 6 o'clock when the last person finished for the day. Ms. Gaccione stepped up to the stage once again. "Thank you all for your presentations. Everyone that gave a presentation this afternoon, please stand and be recognized for your hard work. Let us applaud them as they stand before us." As soon as the applause started, the room thundered, then just as quickly it grew quiet once again. "Tomorrow we will hear about your history and culture. Please do not forget your numbers, because we will keep that sequence for the duration. Have a good evening, everyone, and don't forget your badges. Good night." Ms. Gaccione waved before stepping down from the stage.

The people left the room in large groups, happy for the day to end, especially Alarica and her party. The two groups met outside of the banquet hall at 6 o'clock, ready for a good supper.

They decided to eat at the family restaurant, Meschelein taking charge and walking up to the hostess to announce their arrival. The hostess automatically grabbed her pen, ready to write down the necessary information "How many?"

Meschelein was a bit taken aback at the abruptness of the hostess. However, going with the flow of things, she replied, "We have thirteen in the group." Meschelein's accent took a little getting used to, not that she was difficult to understand, just that it was an accent that most people were not familiar with, especially a high-school student working for a little extra money.

The hostess seemed perplexed, "What?"

Meschelein tried again, "Thirteen."

Thinking a little, the hostess finally asked, "Thirteen?"

Meschelein nodded her head in affirmation, happy that she was understood.

"Okay, and name, please?" the hostess requested looking at the magic piece of paper. Is it going to write the names down for me too?

Thinking of an easy name to understand, she chose, "Bellona."

"Bellona? Is that B-e-l-l-o-n-a?"

"Yes, it is."

"All right, it'll be about fifteen minutes." The hostess finished writing the name, and Meschelein walked back to the group to deliver the news. Bellona laughed a little with the knowledge that it would be her name that would be called, only because she felt slightly embarrassed.

===========

They were seated now at the table. Carissa returned the keycard she borrowed from Bellona. Meschelein and Nerissa were intently listening to their daughter as she retold her adventures, knowing that she embellished her tales maybe just a little, especially the army of fighting ducks that chased after her and yelled "off with her head." She got a "booboo" on her knee because one of the fierce warrior ducks swung his battle-axe at her, only being able to reach her knee before Gretel's fierce protector came to rescue the fair maiden.

Carissa sat next to Meschelein and wondered what sort of tale Gretel was telling. "Do I wanna know what she said?"

Meschelein only laughed as she replied, "Only that you rescued her from the fierce fighting ducks." The rest of the table started laughing when they overheard the reply, remembering a time they heard similar tales.

Carissa, being the sport that she is, replied, "Oh yeah, you should have seen them, they were the fiercest ducks you ever saw, with big, gnarly teeth, and huge feet. Boy you missed out on that one." Carissa stole a sideways glance at Meschelein, who returned the glance with a look that meant not you too. Only a few seconds passed before Carissa started laughing, only to be joined by the rest of the group.

===========

After supper, everybody agreed that they would just bed down for the night. It had been a long and tiring day. Before Alarica's arrival on Tutela Isle, Meschelein had been working on a spell to change her eyes to appear normal, thinking that it would cause less fear in case Tutela did have visitors. For the most part it worked. However, it only lasted as long as she had the energy to keep the illusion. After that, her eyes would change back into the cat eyes that Nerissa had fallen in love with not too long ago

Meschelein closed and locked her door, believing that since everyone agreed to bed down as soon as they reached the room, she would be able to relax. Dropping the illusion, her eyes returned to normal, normal for Meschelein that is.

"Carissa, are these not Gretel's play clothes here in the washroom?" Bellona was the first to use the bathroom, and noticed a set of clothes about the size Gretel would wear.

"What?" Carissa reached the bathroom and looked in as Bellona held up the clothes. "Oh yeah, I'll just give them back to her or ask her what she wants to do. I'll be back." She took two steps toward the door before turning around and adding, "I took $200 from the safe, and put the change in there, too, just so that you know." Carissa left the room.

Nerissa had just laid Gretel down for the night. Gretel had fallen asleep easily this night, not even wanting a story. Meschelein had finished using the bathroom, and now it was Nerissa's turn. "I just love those eyes, they are my eyes, my eyes that see into the soul and see the sunset, so beautiful." They came together for a kiss just as there was a knock on the door.

"You go ahead and answer while I use the bathroom. Gretel's sleeping, she was so tired." Nerissa giggled before entering the bathroom and closing the door.

Meschelein, forgetting to change her eyes back, opened the door. "Yes, Carissa, I thought you would be asleep."

"No, I haven't gone to sleep yet. Are those your natural eyes?" Carissa saw the eyes and was fascinated by them, so mysterious, so unusual, not like anything she had seen before.

"Yes, they are. I am sorry. I had forgotten. Do not be scared, please. Gretel loves and adores you." Meschelein was scared now that someone had found out she was as different as different can be in more ways than one.

"No, I'm not scared, fascinated, so excuse my staring, but . . . um . . . would you mind if I told you something?"

"Please do . . ."

"They look a lot better now than they did this morning. I don't know . . . the color that you're trying to get, I think needs just a little more . . . I don't know . . . oh, wait a minute. I'll be back." Carissa ran part way down the hall before turning around to go back to Meschelein's room. "These are Gretel's play clothes. I don't know if you wanna use them, or keep them, or toss them, whatever you wanna do with them. I'll be back, I promise."

Carissa ran down the hallway and knocked on Alarica's door. Alarica answered the door. "Carissa, did you get your room confused?" she asked, slightly amused.

"No, I didn't. I just need your help with something, probably Breanne's too. She knows more about color than I do." Alarica did not know what to think, and did not doubt that this would not be a practical joke, considering the source. Alarica and Breanne followed Carissa back to Meschelein's room.

Carissa knocked on the door, and Meschelein answered again. Feeling that now that the truth was known there was no need to hide her eyes anymore. "Carissa, you have returned with friends, but I do not understand why this is so."

"Could we come in for just a minute? I promise I won't bug you anymore tonight," Carissa said while crossing her heart.

Meschelein stepped aside to let them in. Carissa started to explain the reason for the visit. "You see . . . all of us have seen Meschelein with different colored eyes. Just a few minutes ago, I came here to give her Gretel's play clothes. Well, these are the eyes that I saw, and I don't know about either of you . . . but . . . don't they look better now than they did earlier. I can't put my finger on it, but I know something is missing. I was hoping that either of you would be able to help me."

Meschelein was feeling gawked at until Breanne motioned her to lower herself so she could see what Carissa was talking about. Remembering the color that she had seen earlier that day, she stated, "You have bootiful eyeth now, but the blue that you had I think need more black, just a little . . . 'kay? We underthtand why you do it, but I think you need more black in the color so it have more depth."

"You are not frightened of me? I searched and worked on a spell to create an illusion so visitors, such as yourself, would not be frightened. Now I know why she asked you here, thank you for accepting me. I will always treasure your gift of friendship. And I will add more black to the color. Thank you."

Alarica took this as her cue to speak up. "Meschelein, we are not frightened of you. I do not believe that would be possible. All of us love you for the kindness and generosity you have shown to all of us. I agree with Carissa. You are much more beautiful now this way, showing your true nature, than the falsehood that you attempt to portray. I understand the reason as well, and always remember we will keep your secret. Goodnight and rest well, to you and your family. We will meet at the same place at the same time tomorrow morning."

Alarica, before you go, did you need help in spelling Severing Cain? Alarica hung her head and started laughing, earning a confused look from the rest of the group. "Maybe tomorrow, the delegate from the country of Lithuania will not fall asleep."

"Meschelein the fact of the matter is, if that delegate had not fallen asleep and started snoring, I certainly would have, just to prove a point." Alarica, Breanne, and Carissa left Meschelein's room for a good night's sleep.

==========

The next day started out very much the same way, except Gretel was now dressed in her play clothes. Carissa had just stepped out of her room when suddenly, her leg was grabbed. She did not seem to mind it, just had a hard time walking. Carissa turned around to see Meschelein and Nerissa walking her way. "Good morning. Did either of you happen to lose something?" she asked, pointing to a grinning Gretel, who was happily clinging to her leg. The sight caused all of them to break into laughter. Meschelein tried her best to encourage her daughter to her, but Gretel only viewed this as an opportunity to cling even tighter. "Good, you're looking better this morning. We're the only ones out here. The rest should be coming any minute. No pretty dresses today?"

"She will not be at the meeting today, so we thought this would be best."

"Ah huh, in other words, she wouldn't budge when she saw the play clothes and you gave in . . . right?"

Meschelein nodded her head and all three broke into laughter. They then heard both doors open and the rest of the party joined them.

==========

After breakfast, they separated into two groups. Carissa, Tristan, Tobias, and Gretel into one group, and the rest would proceed onto day two of the meeting. Carissa was given back the change she returned plus $100 for any extras or necessities to be used during the day. The only stipulation was they had to meet in front of the room at noon to meet for lunch. Understanding that, they proceeded to the park to tackle the mighty warrior ducks.

==========

"Good morning, I hope all of you had a good night's rest for today's event. Today we will be talking about history and culture. The same sequence as yesterday, so please remember your number. The servers will be coming around in just a moment to take your drink order. Please, hold your applause until the very end."

Alarica stepped up to the podium for her part of the presentation. Elmira had made a PowerPoint presentation of the pictures that Breanne had created to add life to this part of the exhibition, and stayed with the group to assist Alarica. Alarica started her speech. "It was the year of our Lord 478 AD . . ." and went on to tell the rest of the story in as condensed a version as she could and still tell it accurately.

During the telling of the story, different images were shown on the large screen. Alarica then went on to say, "Keep in mind, we are not the Amazons of ancient Scythia, but a group of women who only wanted somewhere to call home. Though much of our beliefs and customs are very similar to those of the Amazons, we are women who have lived and survived for many centuries out of sight of the known world."

Different pictures were shown of warriors and their costumes, but there was a plan for something special, something to get the audience's attention. Claryvorra, Melisent, and Emily lined up on stage, ready for their performance. Music started in the background, and after a few bars, Claryvorra started singing then joined by Melisent and Emily. At the end, they performed a traditional dance of Avalon. When the girls stopped performing, Alarica continued.

"As you can see, since we have stopped fighting among ourselves for many generations, we have excelled in art, music, and knowledge. We are a warrior race no longer, but one of intellect and beauty." It is there again. I can hear it. Meschelein, can you hear him? Do you hear his thoughts?

Yes, Alarica, I do, but who is that. Who would be here other than the leaders of foreign countries, for what purpose?

There is only one man I can think of, and if my guess is correct, he is using this as an opportunity to learn more about me than my country. When this overture is over, we can only wait to find out the outcome.

Nobody knew of the silent exchange between Alarica and Meschelein, but Leonessa knew that her daughter was involved in a private discussion, and she knew with whom. It was something that only a mother would know or be aware of.

Alarica and the rest of her family found their seats at the table, and Alarica started laughing at the thought of their dance and music compared to the world famous Irish dancer. She knew it would be risky, but also knew it had to be done in order to show the audience the beauty and splendor of what she calls home. This was not a contest to see whose presentation was best; it was a presentation to educate the elite of a world that had been under cloak for many generations. Alarica was proud of her presentation, as well as the hard work it had taken to get to this point, that was what mattered.

After the last presenter for the morning, Natale spoke again. "Well, what a spectacular morning it has been. I know I enjoyed this morning tremendously. Everyone that presented this morning, please stand and be recognized for your hard work and dedication. Let's give them a big round of applause." The room thundered with applause then when the room quieted down, she continued. "We have a one hour lunch break, before the rest of the countries have an opportunity to do their presentations. Have a good break, everyone." Ms. Gaccione waved just before she stepped down from the podium. She wanted to learn more about the music and dance that was presented, and approached Alarica. "Excuse me, Ms. Alarica, could I speak with you a moment before you go?"

Alarica turned around after hearing her name, and gave a polite smile. "What I can do for you, Ms Gaccione?"

"I just wanted to say it was a delightful performance. Most songs and dances have their roots in telling of a story. Is that what the girls were attempting to portray?"

"Yes, it was, it is the story of a girl falling in love and losing that love to war."

"Oh my, how tragic a story . . . It was truly spectacular, and I better let you go get something to eat, goodbye now."

==========

The two halves met in the lobby and they hurriedly walked outside to the same place they ate yesterday for lunch. Leonessa needed to know what had been said, and felt that now would be as good as any opportunity to do it. All were aware of the American's lack of knowledge of the mother tongue of Avalon, so Leonessa used that to her advantage, and asked Alarica what had transpired. Alarica and Meschelein explained to Leonessa what they had felt, what they had heard. Leonessa was slightly startled that Meschelein understood, but was happy she did nonetheless.

The group split up once again after lunch, happy to know that the fierce warrior ducks were nowhere to be found, therefore, no "booboos" to report. It was time for Gretel's nap, and during that time, the boys promised to be quiet. Tristan would play with his DS, and Tobie would be happy creating another picture. After naptime, the afternoon was spent exploring the town just a bit, walking along the streets and enjoying the scenery.

If only the afternoon for the rest of the group had been just as enjoyable.

==========

Most of the presentations were just past that, presentable. The others, well, let us just say Alarica heard many thoughts of wishes for the little girls dancing again. Meschelein had to laugh as well, as she heard Leonessa thinking this would be a good opportunity to take an afternoon nap, and Bellona having thoughts of experimenting with different herbs and minerals, mixing them together to form a magic potion to make the presenters disappear.

Finally, the afternoon session ended, and Ms. Gaccione approached the podium. "Well, what a wonderful day it has been. If all of the presenters would stand please, to be recognized for their hard work, let's give them a big round of applause as we say thank you. Goodbye, everyone. . ." As soon as the clapping was done, everyone left the room, believing they had represented their country to the best of their ability.

Tomorrow would round out the event with a sports presentation. Alarica's presentation would be done with PowerPoint, thanks to Elmira and Breanne, to show the audience the sort of activities Avalon had to offer. Avalon did not have any sports such as soccer, polo, or baseball, Avalon's sports centered on weapons, such as the broadsword, cudgels, hastas, and long staves, to remind the next generation of the days of old, to be proud of their ancestors.

Alarica did not feel that it was necessary to bring along the weapons, fearing that the audience might get the wrong impression or take advantage of the situation. To keep things safe, Breanne created pictures, while Elmira used modern technology to provide a better medium for the audience to see said pictures. All that was left was for Alarica to do her part with the oration.

Needing a little pick me up after the delegates from the other countries had nearly put everyone into a coma, they decided to go to a place Carissa and the kids had seen on their walk through the city. They served pizza, Buffalo wings, hamburgers, every child friendly food anyone could think of. The added bonus was the activities. They had games, racecars, and a miniature golf course as well, something for everyone.

Meschelein was interested by the Buffalo wings. She had never had them, so was intrigued by what they could be. Nerissa ordered the Buffalo wings as well, remembering the spicy tang of the sauce. Gretel had whatever her favorite friend was having. Carissa's attention had turned towards the boys, so that left Breanne. Meschelein had a firm grip on Gretel's hand, knowing how adventurous her daughter was. Gretel knew she could not get away because no matter how hard she tried, her momma would not let go. So failing that, she got her momma's attention and asked her what her friend Breanne was having. Meschelein got Breanne's attention to ask her that question. Breanne lowered herself to Gretel's eye level, and said the magic word "pizza." Gretel nodded her head enthusiastically as Breanne now ordered pepperoni pizza for two.

Supper was had, and now it was time for games to begin. The boys were interested in the racecars. Feeling just a bit daring, Tristan asked, "Hey, Miss Alarica, I don't suppose you would be too scared to race against me, would you? They have old lady cars there as well. What do you say to a little challenge?" Bellona at first was angry with Tristan's tone, but she slowly relaxed as she recognized the purpose, and found the situation more amusing than she had originally thought.

"Old lady cars and too scared to race against you? Tristan, do you realize with whom you are speaking with?" Alarica knew Tristan's intent, and was not disturbed by the teasing directed at her.

"Well, you are an old lady, and you have never raced a care before. But if you're too scared to give it a try, I could ask my old lady to see if she would be up to it."

"Look here, little man, I am not old nor am I ever scared to take on any challenge," Alarica said to Tristan within a hair's breadth of his face in that low, menacing tone. "Lead the way," she told him as she bowed to Tristan.

Tristan was happy with his victory. Bellona's only worry was if either or both would come out intact. The only thing she could do, stand by and watch. Tobie and Emily decided to challenge each other, throwing the basketball into the hoop. Whoever had the most baskets, owed the other a week's worth of doing their chores for them. Clarissant decided to escort the two just to be sure they would stay out of trouble. To Clarissant, it seemed easy enough. The ball is thrown up to enter the hoop and falls down to be picked up again to repeat the process. Tobie and Emily had not achieved anything yet, and curiosity getting the best of her. Clarissant asked if she could try, and she made the first basket, with both children looking at the queen in amazement.

Meschelein was observing a video game of a warrior challenging, or being challenged by other warriors, with hopefully you left standing as the winner. The challenges start easy, but get progressively more difficult. Meschelein's imagination was getting the better of her, as she found herself thinking how she would have made the next move. The only thing that Nerissa could do, after attempting to get her wife's attention for ten minutes, was to play with her daughter, hitting the gophers with a hammer.

It was time to go back to the hotel for a good night's rest. The result of the games . . . well, Alarica beat Tristan, Tobie will be doing Emily's chores for a week, Meschelein was declared the winner, as she was the only one to be able to get to the end, earning her not only a special reward, but a large crowd as well, Melisent and Claryvorra had fun playing golf, and Gretel hit more gophers than her momma. Bellona, the observer, was proud of each and every one of them. However, she was not an observer the entire time, Bellona did play Pac Man while everyone else was busy, but no one was to find out, because it is a secret. Shh . . .

==========

The last day was here, and unlike the other days, tonight would be the big ball, with everyone in a formal gown and an escort at their side. A full bar with a wide selection of beverages and hors d'œuvres made with meat, seafood, and cheese would be on tonight's menu.

Patrick was called to be sure all of the gowns would be pressed for tonight, as proper cleaning was not necessary since they had been cleaned before departure. But due to packing and folding, wrinkles had shown up in places where none were supposed to be. With a promise the gowns would be ready by 3 o'clock they left the hotel, ready to begin their day.

Alarica was excited about today, and it was a subject that she could tell to anyone who wanted to listen. Everyone could tell that she was energized. Maybe it was bounce in her step, or the giggle, or the twinkle in her eyes that told everyone about her exhilaration. It was felt that everyone needed to attend at least for the morning sessions. After that, the children could leave to do as they wished as long as they were ready and prepared for tonight's banquet, which started at 8 o'clock. As they were the two youngest children in the group, Emily would stay with Gretel in Alarica's room under Elmira's supervision since Bellona needed Carissa to attend tonight's banquet. Tristan, Tobias, Claryvorra, and Melisent were to be fully prepared and dressed for the event, as it would provide them an opportunity to learn proper behavior. In understanding that, Leonessa would be sure that the children were not harmed or convinced in any such way to do something that they should not be doing.

==========

"Good morning, and welcome to the final day of our meeting. It has been a pleasure to listen and learn from all of you about your countries. Tonight at 8 o'clock there will be a banquet, held in the hotel across the street in the Grand Ball Room. Everyone is welcome to come, and I ask you please, if you have young children below the age of six, to please arrange for someone to watch them. If you do not have anyone, please let either myself or your liaison at the hotel know you are in need of someone to watch your child tonight. With that in mind, let us please start the day with our first presenter."

The first presenters gave an exciting presentation of their national sport. Next, it was Alarica's turn, with Elmira following to assist in setting up the PowerPoint display. Meschelein and Alarica exchanged looks as they heard the thoughts of the audience, excited to see what would be today's presentation. Not one to disappoint, Alarica changed her speech just slightly to show her enthusiasm as well. "Avalon does not have a national sport such as cockfighting or bull racing as we previously saw. Our sport, or physical recreation, is learning the weapons of old. The lessons start at a young age with the sling, working up towards the more advanced weaponry such as the long staff, hasta, or broadsword. The first picture is . . ."

Alarica was interrupted by someone yelling, "You never mentioned what weapon you have a mastery of."

Alarica could not help but laugh, "I have a mastery of all of them. The first picture is a representation . . ."

Alarica continued on with the rest of her presentation, seemingly enjoying the oration more today than the previous days. "We do have several competitions during the year for various skill levels, from the beginners to the weapons masters. The winner is chosen . . ."

"How many did you win?"

Alarica stopped talking and turned an amused smile to the audience, "Me, well, my dear fellow, I have won all of them."

"Yeah, then how come your picture isn't there?"

"Sure it is . . . I would be the one standing in victory." Alarica was finally able to finish her presentation without any more interruptions.

Leaving the stage with an amused smile, she turned her thoughts toward Meschelein. He was having fun, was he not? I cannot wait to find out if he will show himself tonight or remain in hiding.

The end of the morning session finished with everyone gathering to exchange stories. Carissa thought it would better to get the kids, all of them, and wait outside for everyone else so none of them would be trampled or lost.

==========

After lunch, Carissa and the kids went back to the hotel. Carissa would stay with Gretel, while the rest of the group went across the way to a park with the knowledge to be back by 3 o'clock to start preparations. Meschelein gave Carissa Gretel's party dress to wear for tonight. Gretel would not attend the banquet itself, but she would be able to have a nice supper in the restaurant on the first floor.

Patrick returned a little after 3 o'clock to return the gowns to the proper rooms. All that was left to do was to get ready.

==========

Having read the banquet's menu, and knowing what would be available at the party that night, Carissa was looking through the hotel menu.

Bellona leaned over Carissa's shoulder and asked, "Why are you looking at the menu? There will be food served tonight with drinks."

"Because I know the sort of food that will be served tonight, it's 90% raw and 10% other, it never fails." Carissa resumed looking over the menu until a rather large hand was placed on top of it, preventing her from reading further.

"That is not always true."

"You know what? You're right, that's not always true, because you were the only one that a decent selection. However, you're not the host tonight, so I expect the menu to be the typical 90% raw and 10 % other."

"Very well, do as you wish. I really would rather you wait until the banquet."

"I have experience at these things. I know what to expect. It's the same story with very little change. The only time . . . I take that back . . . two times that it was different was your party, and Prime Minister Ethelmona's party, that's it. Did you forget what I used to do?"

"No, Carissa, I have not forgotten." Bellona lowered herself to place a kiss on Carissa's head and give her a quick hug.

Straightening up again, Bellona resumed preparations for tonight's banquet. She started with her queen, who would be wearing a crown, though not the royal crown, but a simple golden ring to be placed on top of her head. The dress to be worn would reflect the season. It being spring, pastel colors were chosen, such as powder blue, mint green, or pink. The choice of color this night would be the mint green. A walking cape made of a light material, and wrist cuffs reflecting the name of the house to which she belonged went along with the dress. Bellona wore a similar dress and style, the color was a soft lavender though. The boots worn by both were light and simple in design.

==========

Alarica was busy preparing her family for the banquet as well. Formal wear was required and that meant, a single layer veil, a simple golden ring with her crest emblazoned on due to the risk factor of being away from home, armlets with leather palms lightly decorated with engravings of loyalty and trust, full greaves, and the family medallion around the neck. The colors for tonight reflected the name cyan. Cyan being a deep greenish blue, her dress would have various shades of blue, starting with the inner layer, then the middle, then the top, and finally the vest, to be secured with a sash, four layers in all. The boots needed to be simple, with padding to protect the wearer from the greaves secured from the ankle to the knee.

==========

Meschelein readied herself first. The full gown was required in this case, which was made of a heavy, thick material. The best news though, was that the length of the skirt was short, just past the knees. The colors of the formal dress were chocolate brown, burgundy, and black, creating a marble-like design with gold edging. The dress was designed to fit each ruling crown, be it man or woman. The sleeves were long and billowy to allow for the armlets that would be worn. The simple armlets would be worn, with the family medallion secured around the neck. The short, chocolate-brown, single-layer veil worn was secured in place by a clasping ring designed for that purpose. The clasping ring was very small compared to the royal crown, which had jewels as well as being made of gold, but did not have the magnificence of the royal crown.

Nerissa's dress would be the same color and style, though made to fit her body, with a burgundy veil worn instead, and held by a similar clasping ring. The armlets would be plain and much shorter than her wife's. The empress' armlets would reach her elbows, while the queen's would be only half that length. The boots were thick, displaying an intricate design of a flying dragon.

==========

Everybody met in the seating area of the floor. Meschelein and Nerissa were the first to finish preparing themselves, Alarica and her family arrived next, both stunned by the others' appearance.

"The dress appears heavy, Alarica." Meschelein had observed Alarica's stance and walk, and noticed that it was a bit labored.

"With four layers plus full armor, it weights about thirty pounds. Luckily this is only done for special occasions. Your dress looks a bit lighter than mine, though."

Meschelein laughed before answering. "Looks can be deceiving. The garment is meant to be worn during the entire season, including our winter, which is very cold. It may appear light, but the material is very thick and heavy. That is why I chose a short skirt instead of the longer gown." Looking at Breanne, she complimented, "Look at your little one, she is beautiful tonight. The color brightens her so much."

Breanne felt embarrassed by the complement. Her self-esteem had improved, but it was still hard for her to accept a compliment.

"Mother Alarica, my dress is making my back itch, and I can't reach it." Melisent had been wiggling ever since donning her gown.

Alarica untied the lacing in the back just slightly so she could take a look to see what was causing the problem. Seeing something that should not have been there, she said, "It was a needle left by the seamstress. Melisent, are you all right?"

"Oh yeah, thanks, mom, that's a lot better. I didn't see anything when I put it on, though it must've been hidden really good."

"It was placed inside the seam, and the point was scratching your back. You don't have any needle marks though, that is a point in her favor." Alarica left to put the needle back in her room.

Bellona and her family came out a bit later, with everyone ready to go. Elmira gathered Emily and Gretel and took them back to her room, to bed down for the night. With everyone ready, they entered the elevator ready to proceed to the ball.

==========

The Grand Ball Room was decorated in the opulence of old. String orchestra providing music, servers dressed in servant's costumes to add to the ambiance, and the furniture decorated in table clothes depicting ancient scenes from history. The world seemed to stop turning for a moment as they entered the room. It was not everyday three beautiful rulers of state and their families were seen in such extravagance. Ms. Gaccione was the first to acknowledge their presence.

"My, what beautiful dresses you have on. All of those colors . . . and the jewels are just breathtaking. I just wanted to say thank you for such a wonderful presentation. It really is a shame your friends would not share a little of their countries with us. Maybe next time, I will be able to convince you. Enjoy yourselves, ladies, and have a wonderful night." The world started turning once again.

Breanne took charge of the kids, with the understanding that Carissa would take over after a couple hours of mingling and socializing. Tobias, Tristan, and Carissa had ordered a cheeseburger with strawberry, vanilla, and chocolate shake from room service. The girls were hungry though, as they did not eat before coming to the banquet, and wanted something to eat. Looking at the food selection, there was carrot beef sushi, bloody Mary shrimp, pimento cheese toasts, seafood cocktail, foie gras with date puree and pomegranate, and Mexican tuna tostada. After passing by all of that, they finally found something that might even be tasty, shiitake and chanterelle pizza with goat cheese. Each girl took a slice, ready for the first bite. It was not what they had expected, but it did not taste too bad, after all, it was pizza. They continued to enjoy the night.

Melisent was looking very intently at the foie gras, and pointing to something, she asked, "Claryvorra, what's that?"

"The sign says foie gras, other than that, I do not know. Mother Alarica might, though."

Leonessa came up behind the girls to see what they were looking at. "What seems to be troubling the both of you?"

Melisent was still looking at the mysterious dish. "We just want to know what that is."

"Foie gras is fatty goose or duck liver." With that, Leonessa walked away just as she heard the exclamation, "Ewwww."

Bellona and her queen had been mingling with the other guests, as old habits dictated. You do something for so long, and it becomes second nature. Bellona had been raised in this sort of atmosphere, therefore, knew exactly what to do and what was expected.

Carissa had been wandering around the room, not talking to anyone, just looking doing a little people watching. Then, she heard a familiar voice. A voice from long ago that she thought she had left behind. She continued meandering through the room, believing that she was not concerned about the possible encounter.

Meschelein had left Nerissa for something to drink. She closed her mind to prevent confusion from the many thoughts she would hear. When she passed by Carissa to go to the bar, she noticed something peculiar about her movements. Deciding to speak with Carissa instead, she asked, "Carissa, may I speak with you, please?"

"Oh, hi, great party, isn't it? Now I have proof that what I said was true. These sorts of parties have one menu, 90% raw and 10% other, and that's exactly what's on the menu. The guy from, I think, Haiti, wants to know if you're available. He hasn't said anything yet, not that he would have to. He's been watching every single move you make." Carissa laughed a little before Meschelein continued.

"That would be number, I think, fourteen if he does decide to follow through." Meschelein said stupid and arrogant men in her native tongue, earning her a 'huh' look from Carissa. Shaking her head back and forth, she continued. "What I would like to ask you, may be best in a less populated area, perhaps the veranda?"

"Oh, okay, yeah, it shouldn't be busy yet, the night is still young."

Carissa and Meschelein walked together to the veranda, and opening the door, they made their way to the railing.

"I want to ask you if something is wrong. You are behaving like a scared mouse. Is there something that is wrong?"

"Like a scared mouse..? I don't get the analogy, but in answer to your other question, I'm fine."

"I do not believe so. It is how you carry yourself, your speech, and your eyes are shifting, that is how I know."

Carissa stood there looking at Meschelein. She heard what was said, and understood everything that was said, but at the same time, she did not quite understand everything that was said. Scratching that mysterious itch on her head again, Meschelein grabbed Carissa's hand and held it in her hands. Not knowing how to react, Carissa asked, "Um, how about a drink? Their Gin Rickey's are really good, so are the bourbon Manhattans."

Meschelein shook her head not understanding what was asked, with a puzzled look to follow.

"Well, a Gin Rickey is three ounces of gin, two tablespoons fresh lime juice, and about eight ounces club soda. You fill a cocktail shaker halfway with cracked ice, then add the gin and lime juice. Shake it just a few seconds then strain into a glass filled with ice cubes. Top off the drinks with club soda, then squeeze a lime wedge over it and drop into the glass, and you garnish it with lime. A bourbon Manhattan is four ounces of bourbon, one ounce of sweet vermouth, one ounce of dry vermouth, and two dashes of bitters. You fill a cocktail shaker halfway with cracked ice, then add everything, and shake it. Strain into a chilled Martini glass, and garnish with a maraschino cherry. Didn't think I knew that, did ya?"

"I was looking for fizzy water. I do not drink much at these banquets. I have one glass of wine and that is all. How do you know so much?"

"You see, sometimes my clients would take me to parties like this. It wasn't bad, but when they would meet up with one of their friends, they would be occupied for hours on end. So my only amusement was talking to the bartender. Quite a few of them taught me a thing or two about mixing drinks."

"Is that why you are frightened?" Meschelein was guessing, but she had a suspicion that Carissa's past may have come to the present.

"Of what, drinking..?" Huh?

"No, Carissa, about your clients, about your past. Sometimes, when we believe that our past is gone forever, it surprises us by coming up again in the present. That is what happened, am I right?"

"Well . . . it's just that . . ." Carissa was interrupted by Bellona, who had been watching the exchange. She noticed that they had been talking for a while about something serious, going by the facial expressions and body language. She had also noticed Meschelein's watchful eyes, always wandering, always looking to see if the group was safe. Bellona had a need to fulfill, that need meant finding out the truth.

"Hello there, is there something that I should be made aware of?" Bellona stood there glancing at both of them, waiting for an answer.

Meschelein spoke up first. "I am not sure, Bellona. I think something may be bothering your consors. What it is though, I do not know. I only know that she has been behaving strangely, nothing obvious, no, just enough so that someone who loves her would notice."

Bellona nodded her head understanding. She stopped to think, looking at nothing until she heard a voice behind her and noticed the slight reaction her consors had. Discreetly turning around to see, Bellona had her answer, or at least a strong possibility. "You know, Meschelein, about her past. Some of these men were probably her clients. She has worked to get past that, past her abominable post, and the men most likely do not recognize her because she has grown so since that time. I believe that would be the answer to your question." Bellona felt more than saw Carissa lean against her in comfort.

Meschelein closed her eyes just for a few seconds, opening them again to hear the many thoughts of the crowd. Looking around focusing her energy, she found her target. Closing her mind again, pulling on Carissa's fingers just slightly to get her attention, she stated, "The bald man, sages face, dark complexion, standing next to the woman in the black gown with the butterfly in her hair, would that be the man?"

Carissa started looking, keeping in mind the description that she heard . . . bingo . . . there he was. After all these years, he still looked the same, the jackass. The woman on his arm was most likely a sixteen-year-old who did not know what kind of a mess she had gotten herself into. He was always nice on the outside, but behind closed doors, he had a split personality between Charles Manson and Count Dracula. She never knew what to expect, except a trip to the emergency ward when she was done, the backstreet emergency ward, that is.

"Yeah, that's him. He's a danger to society. He's looks nice and . . . um . . . would you two excuse me for a moment, I'll be right back." Carissa walked as quickly as she could, seeing something that should not be happening. She saw Breanne walk in his direction, and he looking in hers. She hoped she could intercept her before he did. Seeing a clear line, she darted for Breanne, to cut her off at the pass.

Breanne was angry with the way that Carissa had grabbed her. Carissa acted spontaneously, and hoped that she would have the opportunity to apologize and explain later. "What are you doing here?! Didn't she tell you she didn't want to see you wandering away from her?! How dense could you be, you brainless blonde?" Breanne did what she always did in stressful confrontations such as this, and that was run for help, or in this case, walk as quickly as she could without tripping over herself for Alarica.

Leonessa had taken over in watching the children, so that left Alarica by herself. Alarica for the most part was enjoying herself, if she forgot about the butt pinching, the hideous whispers, and the boring conversations. She was especially startled when she saw Breanne approaching her with a look that usually meant trouble. Alarica, not being as strong as Meschelein, kept her mind open and heard Breanne's thoughts quite clearly. Cari hurt me when she grabbed me then she told me a lie about you not wanting me to wander off.

That was all Alarica needed to know, and friend or not, Carissa needed to be dealt with severely.

Carissa watched intently as Alarica approached, hoping to meet her halfway without being pummeled when she got there. Carissa made it to Alarica and motioned her to lean over before Alarica had a chance to speak. Carissa told her what she did and why she did it. Alarica stood straight up again, looking at the man she had mentioned. She had no reason to doubt Carissa, as she had always done right in Alarica's eyes. Nodding her head in understanding, she spotted both Bellona and Meschelein on the other side of the room.

She joined her comrades. "Carissa told me what happened, and had a roundabout way of doing it. If either of you have any ideas, I would be happy to listen."

"There is nothing we can do here with all of these people and the press. Also, if he decides to report us and has people who are willing to listen to his lies then we will be in further trouble." Meschelein had been thinking about what to do, and was discussing the options with Bellona. The both of them could not think of anything without causing further problems.

"Meschelein, what did you have in mind?" Alarica was always interested in hearing Meschelein's ideas.

"I was thinking that we could use his own memories against him. I did not get a good impression from him. Let his memories torture him just as I would do back home with someone such as him, using young girls for his private amusement." Meschelein had gotten a brief glimpse of his memories, and she did not like what she saw. And what she saw made her angry.

"How would one go about doing that?"

"The three of us form a circle around him while I cast a spell."

Bellona felt the need to speak up. "I do not know if you remember this or not, but I do not have the same gifts as you."

Meschelein turned towards Bellona. "No, you do not. You are what the ancient sages would call a conductor. Your purpose would be to absorb the energy and direct that energy to the necessary target."

Bellona did not like the sound of that. It was something she had not been told or taught when she was young. Now, to be told that her purpose was a vehicle for a spell, it was a little scary.

Meschelein could see Bellona's reaction. "I think you misunderstand me. However, I cannot go into detail right now. Just know that we will teach you what you need to know."

"WE . . . will teach her?" Alarica was in shock to hear this.

Meschelein only nodded her head in the affirmative. She left to get her drink from the bar while Bellona and Alarica spoke with each other.

"Do you have any ideas, Bellona?"

"No, Alarica, I do not. This is not home, and if it were, then I would not hesitate in doing something about it. Considering the clientele that Carissa had, I dare say he is not without friends."

Meschelein came back with drinks for everyone. Alarica had been thinking long and hard about the situation. What bothered her the most, that there was nothing she could do, she could not take action. All she could do was stand there and watch a man who should be paying for his crimes walk around freely. "Then there is nothing that we can do, because it is as you say, we are away from home. So the best that we can do is to educate our pack to let them know to stay away. Are we agreed?"

With nodding heads all around, they left to find their families to gather them together to be told about the man they had seen.

Using the veranda once again, they stood outside while Alarica told everyone about what was going on. She directed Carissa to describe the man they were to be aware of.

"The man is about 5' 9" or 5' 10", no hair on his head, small grey eyes, and he always plays with something in his right hand. It could be a coin, a rabbit foot, a toothpick, there is always something in his right hand. His walk is sort of awkward because as he walks, you'll notice his heels coming together so his toes are pointing outward. He is very much a gentleman, in a Count Dracula sort of way, because if he gets you alone somewhere, then he has you, and will do anything to get what he wants. And what he always wants is satisfaction. He is never alone in a situation such as this. The lady he is with tonight, most likely is a young teenager that was offered a chance of a lifetime. Not realizing the cost she would have to pay, which is two days or more of pain and suffering, and waking up in a not so good part of the neighborhood. Did I confuse anyone?" Everyone shook their heads in the negative. "The best way to stay safe is just avoid him, do not go anywhere near him. And if you absolutely have to go somewhere, take someone along with you. He won't do anything if you travel in pairs."

Meschelein heard the flashback of pain in Carissa's explanation. "How did you survive? Was there anyone for you?"

"I can't tell you that because to be honest, I don't remember. All I remember is waking up in a room in a back alley somewhere with this man looking over me telling me I was lucky to be alive. Mommy dearest was hardly ever home, so it was easy to get into her private stock."

Seeing the raised eyebrow, she continued. "Her private stock of alcohol. She could never keep track of anything that she had, so it was easy. Back then it was the only thing that numbed the pain in every sense of the word."

Melisent spoke up after hearing everything that was said. "Carissa, how come he's not in jail? All bad people are supposed to be brought to justice."

Carissa, not knowing how to answer the question without deflating Melisent's view of how the judicial system works, could only tell her what she learned while being a call girl. "Mel, I'm not really sure how to word this without it sounding bad, but one of the things I've learned is that, if you pay someone enough, anyone, be it a cop, or a store clerk, even a senator, they don't see what they are supposed to see and put a stop to the ugliness that exists. You are lucky in that you have two great mommas who love you and show you each and every day how it should be, not what really is."

Melisent stood there thinking about what she had heard, which caused everyone to stop and think about it as well, because they all knew it was true. Their part of the world, this nonexistent world consisting of three small islands in the cold, stormy waters of the north, would be considered a utopian society by most because they simply do not have this problem. "Well, that just smells like the stables after a storm, there has to be something we can do. We can't just be here and not do something?"

"That's just it, Mel, we can't do anything. If we did do something, then your family, your friends, all of us might get into some very deep trouble." Carissa was just as angry that they could do nothing, as well as knowing that there was nothing that could be done.

"All right, I promise to behave." Letting out a deep sigh and slumping as Melisent did so reflected the mood of the entire group.

The rest of the evening proceeded rather smoothly, with everyone staying as far away from the man as they possibly could. It was around midnight when they decided to leave the banquet and lay down for a good night's sleep. Little did they know, however, that someone had overheard their entire conversation . . .
