What Fate Decried

It was twilight when I saw her,
All dressed in somber black.
'Twas the Conqueror of Nations,
For nothing did she lack.

Her face, so regal and so sad.
Alone, her heart did yearn.
For love, elusive, out of reach,
Away from her did turn.

Across the plains her armies swept,
Such spoils and plunder took.
And watching from the clouds above,
Heart-broke, hot tears I wept.

Then like an arrow saw her fall,
And hastened to her side.
Her lifeblood slowly slipping way,
I begged her not to die.

Then hope sprang new, purpose made clear.
My life for hers; I chose.
Immortal gift made right again,
That neither one should lose.

Then as I closed my eyes to sleep,
I saw her eyes meet mine.
And true love found its place that night.
In all, it was divine.
