If this offends you, please refer to the myriad other stories available pertaining to Xena:Warrior Princess. Thanks: This was written in my effort to learn how to write a properly formatted script. I did not want to have to do extensive research; my approach was to write about comfortable subject matter. I had never watched Xena until it went off the air, but I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to watch the entire six seasons in three months on "Oxygen." Because the Xena: Warrior Princess series was a familiar subject matter, I chose it as the base for my first script writing exercise. This script was written approximately three years ago and has sat dormant since that time. However, the few people I let read it hated to see it sit in a box and encouraged me to submit it to others for their comments. Thanks to my very best friend for her help. All constructive criticism and remarks may be submitted to me at critterwalker@yahoo.com. As Bambi's Thumper says, "if you can't say somethin' nice, don't say nothin' at all."

Xena: Warrior Princess
The Last Redemption By L.A. Walker EXT. GARDEN - NIGHT A small lush garden. There is a small cascading waterfall that runs into a small rock pond. Next to the waterfall is a small shrine with an urn and chakram. GABRIELLE sits on a rock bench. She is wearing a sari type gown. Her midriff is bare. The gown is made of raw silk. Her hair has grown out and is shoulder length. She wears sandals. She is writing on a scroll. Gabrielle stops writing and lifts her head and speaks.
GABRIELLE
XENA, I miss you so much. Her eyes turn to look at Xena's chakram and urn of ashes. INSERT - CHAKRAM AND URN OF XENA'S ASHES BACK TO SCENE A single tear rolls down her face.

GABRIELLE
How I wish you were here. I am truly afraid.
EXT. FOUNTAIN OF STRENGTH - DAY Mekhi is a woman warrior of medium height in her early 40's. She has long dark hair. It is pulled back. She wears black leather boots and leather pants. She wears a shirt with three-quarter length sleeves and a leather vest. She leans over the edge of the fountain and pours ashes into the water. She steps back a few feet from the fountain and waits. We can see this woman is very strong physically and has an air of complete control. The water begins to boil, and a huge spray erupts. Xena appears inside the spray, naked. She looks confused.
XENA (confused then angry)
Where.. How.. Who are you? Mekhi is totally unperturbed by Xena's anger and looks her up and down momentarily. Xena looks at herself. Xena realizes she is nude but isn't bothered by it at all. Mekhi looks into Xena's eyes.
MEKHI
My name is Mekhi, and you must be Xena.
XENA
Why am I here?
MEKHI
I have asked God for your return Xena. He has answered with your resurrection.
Xena steps down from the fountain and walks to within
XENA
Well, you better tell God that I have a previous commitment to 40,000 souls.
MEKHI
Xena, your choice to sacrifice yourself for those souls was a honorable one, but not the right one. Mekhi casually turns away from Xena and walks to her horse and retrieves a cape. She walks back to Xena and offers it to her. Xena accepts the cape and wraps it around her nakedness.
Xena and Mekhi sit at the fire. Xena is adjusting her clothes. She is wearing her leather. Xena absently brushes off small particles of dirt with her hands.
XENA
I can't believe my clothes were still where I buried them. Mekhi looks Xena up and down.
MEKHI
And still wearable. A little dusty, but wearable.
XENA
Okay, so you are about to fight a great evil. This battle will be the end of man or a new beginning.
MEKHI
Simply put, but, yes. Xena, when you killed HOPE and her son the Destroyer, that wasn't the end. Xena looks alarmed at the mention of Hope's name.
XENA
What do you mean? Hope is alive?
MEKHI
No, Hope is dead and so is her son, but there have been four more Destroyers since. Xena gets up and begins to pace. Xena is like a nervous cat.
MEKHI
I killed all of them. What I didn't realize until later was with each ones death the next one became stronger and more evil. Xena turns to face Mekhi. Her face shows that she is remembering a specific moment in her past.
XENA
The six Destroyers. Ares said that Hope's child would be the first of six. I thought with their deaths it would end. Xena sits back down by Mekhi.
MEKHI
Unfortunately, no. The sixth DESTROYER has the combined power of his brothers and is six times more evil. EXT. AN OPEN SLOPE - EVENING Xena and Mekhi are riding down a lush green slope toward a castle in the distance. The castle is not huge. It is surrounded by a dense forest and has a beautiful mountain range as a backdrop.
XENA
You still haven't told me why you asked your God for me.
MEKHI
My God. I hope soon Xena He will be your God as well.
XENA
We'll see. Now answer the question.
MEKHI
Soon, Xena, I will answer you but.. A rider is approaching from behind them at a full gallop. Xena and Mekhi turn to watch the rider approach. The rider pulls his horse to a stop next to Mekhi.
MEKHI
ZAHAR, my friend. I see you got it. Zahar is a massive warrior devoted to Mekhi.
ZAHAR
Of course, Highness, have I ever failed you?
MEKHI
Yes, you refuse to stop calling me "Highness."
MEKHI
Xena, this is my most trusted and strongest warrior, Zahar.
XENA
Hello. Zahar nods his head in salute. He is very impressed with Xena and excited to finally meet her.
ZAHAR
I have dreamed of meeting the great Warrior Princess. Wait until. .
Mekhi stops his words with a look. Xena doesn't miss the
MEKHI
In due time, Zahar. . . we're home. Mekhi and Zahar spur their horses to a canter for the castle. Xena watches after them and then follows.
Xena enters a game and weapons room. The room is large with animal heads and weapons lining the walls. A large fireplace is at one end of the room with animal skin rugs and chairs placed around it. A large table with maps rolled up and one spread out in the center sits in the middle of the room. A large window is on one wall, looking out toward the mountains. A double door is next to the window. It leads to the outside. The doors are open. Zahar is leaving as she enters. Mekhi is hanging up her sword and putting the katana on a wooden rack above the fireplace.
XENA
Okay, Mekhi, I've played along so far. I have someone that I need to see in Potidaea. So, tell me why you asked your God for my return.
MEKHI
Give me a minute to freshen up. I will meet you in the garden.
Mekhi starts to leave the room and points to a door that
Gabrielle is sitting on the rock bench with her scrolls. She has obviously been looking through them and writing on another. A fox enters the garden and sits quietly until Gabrielle notices. Gabrielle is not shocked by its appearance. We can tell by her response this is a common thing between Gabrielle and the fox.
GABRLIELLE
Well, my friend. Where have you been?
Gabrielle reaches for a small morsel of food from a plate
GABRIELLE
I won't try to pet you. I know you won't let me. The fox cocks its head as if listening. Gabrielle smiles and admires the fox's beauty.
GABRIELLE
I'm glad you came. You always seem to appear when I'm sad or lonely. Tonight I'm both. Gabrielle moves to the fountain and sits on the edge of the small pond. The fox moves only slightly to keep her in sight.
GABRIELLE
Mekhi and Zahar should be home any day now. I miss Mekhi.
The fox moves to within a foot of Gabrielle and looks up at
GABRIELLE
Do you understand when I talk to you? Sometimes I think you do. Again the fox turns its head slightly as though listening.
GABRIELLE
It scares me when she leaves. Oh, Mekhi, come home. Gabrielle is gazing into the fountain. The fox pricks its ears and leaves. Xena enters the garden from behind Gabrielle. Gabrielle does not notice. Xena is shocked to see that it is Gabrielle. Xena's face dissolves into an expression of devoted love. Before she can speak she hears Gabrielle talking to herself.
GABRIELLE
Xena, if you only knew how your loss affected me. I loved you so much, and I still sometimes feel so empty without you. Xena is moved by the sadness in Gabrielle's voice.
XENA
No more empty than I feel without you. Gabrielle turns slowly to see Xena walking toward her. Gabrielle looks as though she is seeing a ghost and puts out her hand as if to stop Xena's movement. Her eyes fill with tears.
GABRIELLE
No! You are not real. I can't start this again. Xena takes another step toward her. Gabrielle takes one step back. Xena stops, realizing Gabrielle is afraid.
XENA
Gabrielle, it's me. I'm not a ghost or a vision. It's me. Gabrielle sinks down to the ground weeping. Xena is moved by Gabrielle's response. Xena is realizing the great sadness her choice at the Fountain of Strength made on Gabrielle.
GABRIELLE
No, I won't let my mind trick me into believing you're really standing there. Xena moves over to Gabrielle and takes her in her arms. Gabrielle feels Xena's hands on her and she looks up into Xena's face, realizing Xena is real.
XENA
Gabrielle, it's me. I never realized how much pain my decision to stay dead would cause you.
Gabrielle lifts her hand to Xena's face, as though she wants to prove to herself Xena is real. XENA
I'm so sorry.
A tear runs down Xena's face. Gabrielle wipes it away.
GABRIELLE
Xena, you've come back. How? Why?
XENA
You will have to ask Mekhi. Mekhi enters the garden.
MEKHI
Gabrielle, I see you've met our newest warrior in the battle against evil. Gabrielle and Xena both look up at Mekhi and rise. Gabrielle runs to Mekhi and hugs her. Mekhi returns the embrace.
Xena notices the warmth between Gabrielle and Mekhi and
Gabrielle releases Mekhi, and they smile at one another.
MEKHI
I'll answer that question now, Xena.
Xena, Gabrielle, and Mekhi sit around the fireplace.
MEKHI
I was out hunting and it was getting dark. I decided to camp and return home the next day.
Mekhi rises and walks to the edge of the fireplace and
MEKHI
I was awakened by a fire burning in a bush across the fire from where I was sleeping. Mekhi turns to face Xena and Gabrielle. A look of wonder plays across her face.
MEKHI
I thought an ember had ignited the fire, so I got up to put it out. As I approached, a voice erupted from the bush.
Mekhi dropping to one knee before the burning bush. BACK TO SCENE
MEKHI
I had my doubts about the God of the Israelites. I have no doubts now.
XENA
So, why me. Mekhi smiles slightly and looks to Xena.
MEKHI
God gave me the choice of the warrior who would help me destroy this evil. After reading Gabrielle's scrolls, I knew you were the one. Gabrielle, who has been watching and listening to Mekhi speak, turns to Xena.
GABRIELLE
Xena, are you going to help?
XENA
Sounds like my kind of fight. Besides, after the pain you have suffered over Hope and her first born, not to mention Dahak himself, I'll fight. Xena and Gabrielle exchange a knowing look. Mekhi moves toward Gabrielle. Gabrielle looks away from Xena to Mekhi. Mekhi looks first to Gabrielle then Xena.
MEKHI
Gabrielle trusts you and loves you above all others. I trust her more than anyone. I know I made the right choice.
XENA
I'll do whatever it takes.
MEKHI
Well, it's been a long day. I'm off to bed. Goodnight. Mekhi turns to leave. Gabrielle follows her to the door. Gabrielle lightly touches Mekhi's arm. Mekhi stops and turns to face her.
GABRIELLE
Mekhi, I.., I don't know what to say. Thank you seems so.. Mekhi interrupts her and smiles.
MEKHI
I told you I would always try to make you happy. Gabrielle strokes Mekhi's arm and returns the smile.
GABRIELLE
And you have. Gabrielle kisses Mekhi on the cheek.
GABRIELLE
Mekhi, I missed you.
MEKHI
And I you. Goodnight. Xena again watches the exchange between Gabrielle and Mekhi. She realizes they are very close. Mekhi turns and leaves the room.
Gabrielle turns back to Xena and crosses the room to her.
GABRIELLE
Xena, I feel like this is a dream and I will wake and ...
XENA
I know. Gabrielle, I am so sorry for the pain I caused you.
Gabrielle walks to the edge of the fireplace and gazes
GABRIELLE
I felt totally alone. The first year after your death, I was so lost. Xena moves to the opposite side of the fireplace and also gazes into the flames.
GABRIELLE
I finally settled in a little village near Potidaea by the sea. I have a hospice there. When I heard of the battles going on here to defeat evil, I came to try and help. Xena and Gabrielle turn their gaze from the fire to one another.
Xena
And you met Mekhi.
GABRIELLE
Yes, I was captured by a warrior. Mekhi came to his camp, killed him, and carried me out. Gabrielle moves across to Xena and stands before her.
GABRIELLE
She saved me Xena. After you, I never thought I would love someone else. I never wanted to feel the pain and emptiness that losing someone causes. Xena reaches out and caresses Gabrielle's face.
XENA
Again, I'm so sorry. You trust her, Gabrielle?
GABRIELLE
With my life, Xena. Xena moves away from the fire to the window and looks out at the night sky and mountains.
Xena
Do you love her? Gabrielle is surprised by the question. She watches Xena at the window and hesitates for a moment. Xena turns and looks at Gabrielle to see why she hasn't answered. Gabrielle answers slowly.
GABRIELLE
Yes, Xena, I love her. Xena comes back to the fire and stands in front of Gabrielle.
Xena
And does she love you? Gabrielle lowers her eyes then looks back into Xena's.
GABRIELLE
I feel she does, though she has never said those words. Gabrielle reaches out and takes Xena's hands.
GABRIELLE
She is very stoic, Xena, worse than you. Very controlled. Why do you ask me about my feelings for her? Gabrielle drops Xena's hands and crooks her arm through Xena's. She guides Xena toward the door. Xena moves with Gabrielle willingly.
XENA
I just need to know. Gabreille makes eye contact with Xena.
GABRIELLE
My feelings for Mekhi are strong Xena. I was alone, I . . . They stop at the doorway and face one another.
XENA
Gabrielle, don't explain. I understand. I just don't want to cause you any more pain. They hold each others gaze for a moment.
GABRIELLE
Xena, you're my soul mate and always will be.
Xena
I hope so, Gabrielle. They hold each other's gaze a moment longer.
Xena
Let's call it a day. Tomorrow is going to be busy. Gabrielle and Xena move toward the door.
GABRIELLE
Oh, by the way, an old friend of yours is waiting in the stables.
Xena
Argo!
GABRIELLE
Yes, Argo.
Men are practicing sword fighting, using bows, riding in formation in the background. Mekhi is riding a tall, black, war-horse. The horse is a stud and very spirited. Gabrielle and Xena approach and watch her ride for a moment. Gabrielle smiles and admires Aurum. She likes this horse and enjoys watching Mekhi ride him.
GABRIELLE
That's Aurum Mekhi is riding. Isn't he beautiful?
XENA
Yea, beautiful. Mekhi notices them and rides over.
MEKHI
Good morning to you both. I hope you were able to catch up a little last night.
GABRIELLE
We did. Xena is still distracted. Mekhi and Gabrielle look at Xena and both smile. They know she is looking for Argo.
MEKHI
Xena, why don't you try that whistle you always used? Xena looks at Mekhi, then Gabrielle, and whistles. From behind the stable Argo appears and runs to within inches of Xena and stops. Argo nudges Xena, and Xena caresses the horses face. Xena has a big smile on her face.
XENA
I can't believe you're here, girl! Gabrielle moves over to Xena and Argo. Gabrielle pats Argo.
GABRIELLE
I would never let her out of my sight, nor would I want you to go into battle without a good horse. Xena smiles at Gabrielle and continues to pat Argo.
XENA
I can't think of a better horse. Thanks, Gabrielle. Xena looks up at Mekhi.
XENA
It seems your horse has a name more suited for Argo. Mekhi pats Aurum's neck.
MEKHI
Yes, but in this case it refers to his being worth his weight in gold, not gold in color. Xena pats Argo's neck and looks from Gabrielle to Mekhi.
XENA
I think Argo and I will go for a ride. Xena and Argo move off toward the stable. Mekhi steps down off of Aurum and walks over to Gabrielle. Mekhi watches Gabrielle's face as Xena walks away. Gabrielle's face is a mixture of emotion.
MEKHI
Is everything okay?
GABRIELLE
Of course, (trying to cover) why do you ask? Mekhi moves closer to Gabrielle and stares into her eyes. Gabrielle can not hold her gaze. Gabrielle knows she can not hide her feelings from Mekhi.
MEKHI
You seem not yourself. As though there are traces of sadness, maybe even anger, in you.
Gabrielle breaks eye contact and moves away from Mekhi.
GABRIELLE
No, of course not. I'm just a little overwhelmed. It's not every day someone you thought was gone forever returns. Gabrielle looks at Mekhi and smiles. Mekhi is not fooled but she doesn't pressure Gabrielle.
MEKHI
Of course. I hope I made the right choice. I would never want to cause you pain.
Gabrielle stops walking and reaches out and touches
GABRIELLE
Oh, Mekhi, you did make the right choice. There is no better warrior than Xena. Mekhi puts her hand over Gabrielle's. Her tone is serious.
MEKHI
I'm not talking about Xena's abilities as a warrior. I'm talking about her return hurting you in any way. Gabrielle looks now into Mekhi's eyes very intently.
GABRIELLE
There is no greater gift you could have given me. I just need time to adjust. Please know how happy this has made me. Mekhi smiles and begins to walk away.
MEKHI
I will trust that these are your true feelings. I better go. The men are waiting.
Xena is riding Argo through the forest. She notices Mekhi Xena rides over to Aurum and steps down off of Argo. She examines the ground and leaves the horses following Mekhi's tracks. The tracks end at a stream. Xena crosses and tries to find where Mekhi left the stream. The only tracks she comes across are those of a fox.
XENA
Fox, but no human tracks. Xena decides to continue in the direction the tracks were leading. After a few hundred yards she comes to a rock overhang and looks down into a small meadow. A small enemy camp is in the meadow. It is a scouting party. Xena moves down into the camp and investigates. Xena is trying to make her way to a tent with a banner when two soldiers attack her. Sounds of their fighting fills the air. Three more soldiers move in to help. Xena leaps over the first two and gives her warrior yell. She is still winning. Three more soldiers move in, and with their arrival comes Mekhi.
MEKHI
Is this a private party, or can anyone play?
XENA
The more the merrier. Mekhi and Xena fight together. They fight together back toward the rock outcrop.
More soldiers join in. Xena and Mekhi kill several of the Xena and Mekhi defeat the remaining soldiers. Several soldiers run back down to the camp. Xena and Mekhi watch them go.
XENA
I guess those are some of the Destroyer's troops? Mekhi turns toward Aurum and mounts.
MEKHI
Yes, I was trying to do a little reconnaissance. Xena turns and mounts Argo. She can't help being arrogant with Mekhi.
XENA
Sorry if I interrupted. Mekhi ignores her attitude.
MEKHI
No, I was on my way out when I heard the confusion. Xena and Mekhi turn toward home. They don't talk. These two are having a hard time figuring each other out.
MEKHI
Let's get back. We have some planning to do.
A robed figure stands before an altar of fire. A wounded soldier enters the temple and falls to his knees.
SOLDIER
Master, we were attacked by Mekhi and a woman warrior I've never seen before.
The robed figure turns toward the soldier. His face
THE DETROYER
What did this woman look like? The soldier keeps his head down and does not make eye contact. He is afraid.
SOLDIER
She's tall, black hair, piercing blue eyes. She fights like she is straight from the gates of . . . The Destroyer puts out his hand and silences the soldier.
THE DESTROYER
Xena! So the God of the Israelite's has resurrected the bitch who tricked our brother into killing our mother. The soldier is trembling at the anger his words have caused. In his rage, the Destroyer kills the soldier. The soldier's skin is peeled away. He burst into flames and disintegrates.
THE DESTROYER
Now I will not only have the pleasure of killing Mekhi and the chosen innocent Gabrielle, who betrayed her own child, but also Xena. We never see his face.
Xena, Gabrielle, Mekhi, and Zahar stand around the table with the map spread across it. Mekhi looks up from the map at Zahar.
MEKHI
Zahar, will the troops be ready to move in three days?
ZAHAR
Yes, Highness. We should have all the supplies accumulated by the day after tomorrow.
Mekhi and Zahar look back to the map. Mekhi points to a specific point on the map. All of their eyes follow Mekhi's finger to where she is pointing. MEKHI
According to our scouts the Destroyer's main force is moving toward the Tundzha valley. It is the only open ground between us and his temple. Gabrielle looks to Xena and Mekhi.
GABRIELLE
Why would the Destroyer allow his main force to move into a valley where they could be trapped? Xena moves her eyes from the map and speaks to no particular person.
XENA
I'm betting because he doesn't care about those men's lives. He just wants us to lose as many men as possible trying to get through them to him. Mekhi walks away from the table to a window and looks out.
MEKHI
You're right, Xena. The only other option is the forest. Two armies in a forest.. Mekhi turns back to the group.
MEKHI
. .well you know how that would be. Too long. He wants us to engage in this battle quickly. Xena looks at Mekhi and again displays an arrogant attitude.
XENA
Well, let's give him what he wants. The sooner we get through that valley the quicker we destroy him. Zahar doesn't like Xena's tone. His loyalty is with Mekhi because he loves her. Zahar moves in front of Xena.
ZAHAR
We don't sacrifice our men so easily. Xena steps into Zahar and returns his aggression.
XENA
I understand what you're saying, but this is the way this battle is going to be - ruthless. Xena and Zahar continue to stare one another down. Gabrielle is unnerved by the behavior of both Xena and Zahar. It isn't like either one of them to behave this way.
GABRIELLE
Xena, Zahar, please. Stop it. Gabrielle moves around the table toward them. Mekhi stops her with a shake of her head.
MEKHI
Zahar, please stand down. Zahar looks at Mekhi and steps away from Xena. Xena looks back at Mekhi. Mekhi addresses Zahar.
MEKHI
Unfortunately, Xena is right. This will not be a war, but a battle. It will begin one morning and be finished by the afternoon.
ZAHAR
But, Highness, couldn't we beat them to the valley and line the top of the valley with our men and then rain destruction down upon them? Mekhi looks at Zahar with a softer face. She knows, for all his size and strength, he is really a compassionate man.
MEKHI
I thought of that, but I am sure The Destroyer has also, Besides, the valley walls are very rough and rocky. Mekhi moves back to the window, Again she looks out into the night.
MEKHI
I am afraid the valley floor will be our battlefield. The cost we will pay in lives lost will be great, but we must remember this battle is for good over evil, and for that there is no cost too great. We see a rat sitting at the door leading to the garden. It leaves and morphs into the Destroyer then disappears into thin air. Again we do not see his face.
The Destroyer sits on a throne to the right of the altar. He wears a hooded robe. His face is obscured. Three officers in his army kneel before him.
THE DESTROYER
Mekhi and Xena know our forces are moving toward the Tundzha valley. The Destroyer stands. The hood of his robe still hides his face from us.
THE DESTROYER
They also know this is the only battlefield. The Destroyer walks to the altar and raises his arms. His back is to us.
THE DESTROYER
Dahak, Gabrielle will be the sacrifice to open the door of this world to you. Xena and Mekhi will be destroyed. The Destroyer lifts his head.
THE DESTROYER
My brothers failed. I will not! The Destroyer turns to the kneeling officers.
THE DESTROYER
You can bring me the bodies of Xena and Mekhi if you can, but your troops are not to harm nor capture Gabrielle. Now go! The officers rise and bow.
Officers Yes, master. The officers turn and leave. The Destroyer turns toward the altar again. His back is to us and he removes the hood. We see the back of a man's head, and then it morphs into the head of a fox. We see the Destroyer turn away from the altar and face the interior of the temple. The Destroyer morphs back into a man. He is not what we expected an evil man to look like. He is extremely handsome.
THE DESTROYER
Gabrielle is mine.
Gabrielle sits on the stone bench. The fox enters the garden and sits before her. Gabrielle has brought a morsel of meat for the fox. She pitches the morsel a few inches from the fox. The fox gently picks it up and eats it. The fox never takes its eyes off Gabrielle.
GABRIELLE
Good morning my friend. The fox cocks its head.
GABRIELLE
How I wish you could talk.
Gabrielle stands and begins to move around the garden.
GABRIELLE
Have you ever loved two people at the same time? Gabrielle stops and looks at the fox the fox returns her look.
GABRIELLE
Of course you haven't. You're a fox. The fox sits in front of her again.
GABRIELLE
I don't know what to do. When this is over Xena will want to go home. But, where is home for me? Gabrielle stands and moves to the fountain. The fox moves slightly to keep her in sight.
GABRIELLE
Home for me was Xena. Now I have Mekhi. She has been my home for the last four years. How do I choose? The fox pricks its ears and runs from the garden. Xena has entered the garden and overhears only the last words that Gabrielle spoke. Xena notices a flash of fur leaving the garden.
XENA
Choose what? And what was that, a cat? Gabrielle turns to face Xena. She tries to leave her worry behind and look upbeat.
GABRIELLE
Choose? Oh, nothing. And that was a fox. Xena moves over and sits on the bench. Gabrielle comes and sits next to her.
XENA
I was a little worried when I thought you were talking to yourself, but, hey, I didn't realize you were talking to a fox. Gabrielle punches Xena on the arm. They laugh. Even after five years the bond between them is still as strong as ever.
GABRIELLE
Hey, I like my fox. She comes to the garden and visits with me. She won't stay if anyone but me is here. Xena pokes Gabrielle in the ribs causing her to flinch and giggle.
XENA
And how do you know it's a she? Gabrielle stands and moves across to the fountain and leans on it.
GABRIELLE
I don't. She just looks like a she. Xena stands and moves over to Gabrielle. She lowers her eyes. She is nervous.
XENA
Gabrielle, when this is over what will you do? I mean will you stay here or . . . Gabrielle lowers her eyes and moves back to the bench and sits. She knew this was coming but still isn't ready.
GABRIELLE
I don't know, Xena. I have a new hospice here in the village, but I miss my home and my hospice in Potidaea. Xena moves back to the bench and sits beside Gabrielle. She senses Gabrielle's turmoil.
XENA
And you would have gone home, except Mekhi came into your life. Gabrielle turns and looks into Xena's eyes. She's afraid of saying the wrong thing, but she can't lie to Xena.
Gabrielle
Yes, until Mekhi came into my life.
Xena takes Gabrielle's hands in hers and looks into her
XENA
Gabrielle, for me, you will always be the person I love the most, my soul mate. I know Mekhi is special to you, but I want our lives back the way they were. Gabrielle's eyes fill with tears. She can't bear to hurt Xena, but she loves Mekhi and is very loyal to her.
GABRIELLE
Xena, I just can't walk away from Mekhi as though she never mattered.
Xena abruptly stands and turns to face Gabrielle. Xena feels Gabrielle might choose Mekhi over her. She knows she is wrong, but she can't help reacting to her feelings. XENA
When this is over, Gabrielle, I can't stay here. I want to go back to Greece. I'm sorry. Gabrielle lowers her head. Tears begin to fall down her cheeks.
GABRIELLE
I know you can't stay, but I feel... Xena moves to the fountain and turns to face Gabrielle again. She is fighting her fear of having lost Gabrielle.
XENA
I understand you feel confused, but I know we belong together. Gabrielle looks up at Xena and abruptly stands. Gabrielle moves in front of Xena. Her fear of hurting Xena is replaced by her anger at Xena for choosing to stay dead and leaving her.
GABRIELLE
Xena, if you felt we belonged together so strongly, why did you choose Akemi over me? Xena is taken back and becomes angry.
XENA
Look, Gabrielle, I thought those souls along with Akemi had to be revenged. I thought I did the right thing. Gabrielle doesn't back down.
GABRIELLE
Xena, it was an accident. When will you have atoned enough for your past? Xena turns her back on Gabrielle. Gabrielle moves in front of Xena again.
GABRIELLE
When will you choose someone over me again? Xena is hurt, then covers with anger.
XENA
When this is over, I'm gone. Xena turns and leaves the garden. As she moves through the archway, she bumps shoulders with Mekhi. Xena does not say anything, just continues walking. Mekhi walks toward Gabrielle and realizes she is upset.
MEKHI
Gabrielle, what happened? Gabrielle is still angry but tries to control it.
GABRIELLE
Nothing. This is between Xena and me. Mekhi notices the edge of anger in her voice but doesn't pressure Gabrielle.
MEKHI
Fair enough. I came to see if you needed any help with your things. We are loading the wagons. Gabrielle softens some. She can't help but lose her anger when Mekhi is so understanding and acts as if nothing is out of the ordinary.
GABRIELLE
Yes, I will need help in loading the materials we need for the field hospice.
Mekhi turns away from Gabrielle and starts to leave the
MEKHI
I will send you some men. Mekhi leaves and Gabrielle sinks down onto the bench. A few moments pass and the fox appears and sits before her.
GABRIELLE
Why do we say things to hurt the people we love? The fox simply cocks its head.
Gabrielle is working inside the hospice. She moves from patient to patient speaking softly to them. Mekhi enters and watches Gabrielle for a moment. Mekhi admires and respects Gabrielle more than any person she has ever known. Gabrielle has stopped at a patient's bed to speak to him, then turns and sees Mekhi standing there watching. She pats the patient's hand and walks over to Mekhi.
GABRIELLE
Mekhi, what are you doing here?
MEKHI
Watching you. Mekhi takes her hand and starts to pull her toward the door.
GABRIELLE
What are you doing? Hey, I'm trying to work. Mekhi stops pulling Gabrielle for a moment and smiles mischievously.
MEKHI
Not today. The wagons are loaded, and I want you to go for a ride with me. Gabrielle tries to pull away from Mekhi. Mekhi holds her fast. She is still smiling.
GABRIELLE
Mekhi, we leave tomorrow, and I need to . . . Mekhi looks tenderly at Gabrielle. Gabrielle is surprised with Mekhi's behavior. Mekhi is usually very reserved. She keeps her playful side well hidden.
MEKHI
Please, Gabrielle, come with me. Gabrielle laughs lightly and stops pulling. She lets Mekhi lead her outside.
Mekhi releases Gabrielle. Gabrielle starts down the steps toward her horse. Mekhi follows. Just as Gabrielle reaches her horse, Mekhi touches her shoulder and stops her movement and moves toward Aurum. MEKHI
Gabrielle, ride with me.
Gabrielle stops. Mekhi mounts Aurum and holds out her hand.
GABRIELLE
Well, we haven't done this in a long time. Mekhi turns Aurum and looks around to Gabrielle.
MEKHI
We should have . . . and often. Gabrielle looks moved. Mekhi spurs Aurum into a lope.
Xena is standing among several stuffed targets. She stands quietly and then explodes into motion. Zahar is watching. Xena makes short work of the practice dummies.
ZAHAR
Impressive. Xena turns to see Zahar walking toward her.
XENA
Thanks. Xena is not overly friendly and adjusts her armor. Zahar stops just behind Xena.
ZAHAR
I want to apologize for my behavior last night. Xena turns to face him. She doesn't respond. Zahar, like Mekhi, ignores her attitude.
ZAHAR
You're very explosive, Xena. I am used to Mekhi. . .
XENA
And Mekhi is . . . Xena removes her sword, walks away from Zahar, and starts working it.
ZAHAR
Mekhi is like an ember. Slow burning but still very dangerous. Xena stops working the sword and walks back to Zahar.
XENA
Are you trying to tell me something, Zahar? Zahar smiles at Xena and shakes his head.
ZAHAR
No, Xena. I just want you to realize quickly how good you and Mekhi will be together. Xena sits on the scaffolding again.
XENA
What do you mean?
ZAHAR
Xena, you and Mekhi have little time to get to know one another. Yet you have to fight together to win this battle against evil. Xena sheaths her sword.
XENA
You're right, Zahar, but I usually work alone. Zahar walks over and sits with Xena. Zahar tries to use his most persuasive tone of voice.
ZAHAR
This time, Xena, you must work with Mekhi. God's plan will only work if you trust one another. Xena turns and looks at Zahar. He returns her look and stands. Xena is disappointed in herself. She can't seem to get control of her emotion.
ZAHAR
Xena, ask yourself, if Gabrielle grew to love and trust Mekhi, isn't she worthy of your trust? Xena doesn't look at Zahar; she simply looks down at the ground.

What's gotten into my usually so reserved friend? Mekhi, who was looking out at the surface of the pool, turns and looks at Gabrielle and smiles.
MEKHI
Well, you know what they say. All work and no play . . . Gabrielle laughs and leans her head over on Mekhi's shoulder.
GABRIELLE
Really, Mekhi, is there something . . . you want to tell me or . . . Gabrielle lifts her head up and looks into Mekhi's eyes.
MEKHI
I just wanted to spend time with you before this all begins. Gabrielle looks concerned.
Gabrielle
Are you sure that's all?
Mekhi reaches up and tenderly touches Gabrielle's face.
MEKHI
Yes. Gabrielle takes Mekhi's hand from her face and kisses it.
Xena watches for a moment more, then turns Argo and rides Sitting in the trees unnoticed by any of them is a fox. The fox watches Xena ride away and then looks back to Gabrielle and Mekhi. The fox disappears into thin air.
Xena is sitting outside Argo's stall sharpening her sword. Mekhi enters the stable and walks over to Xena. Mekhi is carrying the katana in its saya.
MEKHI
Mind if I sit with you awhile? Xena doesn't look up.
XENA
I'm not sure how good ah company I'll be. Mekhi sits on a nearby stool. She tries to ignore the tension between them.
MEKHI
I'll have to take my chances. I need to talk to you. Xena looks up from sharpening her sword. Again her tone is sharp. She realizes it, but she just can't seem to stop it.
XENA
Okay, so talk. Mekhi ignores Xena's tone and continues.
MEKHI
You know what this is? Mekhi extends the katana toward Xena. Xena takes the katana from Mekhi and unsheathes it.
XENA
Yes, it's a katana. Mekhi leans back against a beam.
MEKHI
This is the sword you must use to kill the Destroyer. It has been blessed. Mekhi leans forward and stresses her words.
MEKHI
The blow you strike must be to his heart. Xena looks at the katana and then at Mekhi.
XENA
Why give me the katana? Why don't you keep it yourself and do the job? Mekhi gets up from the stool and moves over to pet Aurum. She is trying to control her anger at Xena's constant aggressive tone.
MEKHI
Because. God has chosen you, Xena, to strike the mortal wound.
Xena puts her sword back in its sheath and stands with She moves it deftly in her hand and walks toward Mekhi still moving it, working it back and forth. Mekhi turns to face Xena. Mekhi watches as the blade gets closer and closer to her. Mekhi sees the glint of light off the blade. Xena stops only an inch from Mekhi. Mekhi has not moved. Xena is irritated that Mekhi shows no fear or concern. She is trying to push Mekhi into some kind of reaction and yet Mekhi remains controlled.
XENA
This God of yours. He's awfully bossy. Mekhi steps into the blade of the katana until it is pressed against her chest.
MEKHI
No, Xena, bossy is not the word. God has a plan, and we are simply here to carry it out. Xena drops the katana away from Mekhi's chest and moves back to where she was sitting.
MEKHI
Xena, you're angry. Have I in some way caused it? Xena turns to face Mekhi. She wants to scream that yes she's angry. Angry with herself for hurting Gabrielle once again, but she holds her tongue.
XENA
Well, as a matter of fact. . . Mekhi walks back to the stool and sits. Xena sits on her stool as well.
MEKHI
This anger, it's because of the conversation you had with Gabrielle this morning? Xena glares at Mekhi.
XENA
What were you doing, eves dropping? Mekhi again ignores Xena's aggression.
MEKHI
On the contrary, Xena. I believe it was you who blew by me and nearly took my shoulder off. One look at Gabrielle told me you two had words. Xena leans back on the stall and places the katana back into the saya. She then leans it against the stall.
XENA
What happened in the garden is between Gabrielle and me. Mekhi stands. She is finally becoming angry and she is having trouble controlling it.
MEKHI
Why didn't you join us at the waterfall today? You were there. Xena is surprised and angry. She realizes Mekhi is much more than she seems.
XENA
I wouldn't want to intrude. Mekhi realizes she is out of line. She is goading Xena. Mekhi tries again to ignore the tension.
MEKHI
Xena, this is doing us both no good. We have got to focus and work together. We have to trust one another. Xena ignores Mekhi and starts lacing her gauntlet. This causes Mekhi to become angry again. Mekhi takes a step toward Xena.
MEKHI
I have to say, Xena, your insecurity and jealousy are not the usual characteristics of a warrior. Xena jumps to her feet and moves to within inches of Mekhi. Mekhi again does not move nor flinch.
Xena
What do you mean my jealousy and insecurity? Mekhi looks hard into Xena's eyes.
MEKHI
Xena, can't we both love her? Can she not have a place for both of us in her heart? Xena moves to where her chest is touching Mekhi's.
XENA
Are you feeling a little threatened yourself, Mekhi? Mekhi stands her ground and moves her face close to Xena's.
MEKHI
Xena, when you emerged from the fountain, you were understandably confused and angry. You invaded my personal space and I let it pass. Now I'm asking you to step back.
Xena thrust her chest out and knocks Mekhi back a step
MEKHI
Xena, I don't think you really want to fight me. Who you really want to fight is yourself.
XENA
Oh, really? Well, obviously I can't fight myself, so I guess you'll have to do. Xena takes a punch at Mekhi. Mekhi blocks the punch and sends Xena to the ground with a kick. Xena is on her feet and the fight is on. Xena and Mekhi are equally matched.
The horses start neighing, and as things are knocked from Gabrielle runs into the barn to find Xena and Mekhi fighting. Both Mekhi and Xena are bleeding. Both have bloody noses and lips.
Gabrielle runs toward them screaming. She is very angry. GABRIELLE
Stop it! Xena! Mekhi! Stop it!
Xena and Mekhi, in their effort to get to each other,
Xena and Mekhi stop fighting immediately. They both move to
GABRIELLE
Get your hands off me! Both of you. Xena and Mekhi glare at each other over Gabrielle. Gabrielle stands up, rubbing her forehead.
GABRIELLE
What do you two think you are doing? Gabrielle looks from one to the other.
GABRIELLE
What could you possibly be fighting over? Xena and Mekhi continue to glare at one another. They are both more angry with themselves than with each other for acting so foolishly.
Xena
She said her horse was better than mine. Gabrielle gives Xena an angry look of disgust.
MEKHI
Well, he is.
Gabrielle
Xena, what was that all about?
Xena turns away from Gabrielle and starts to collect her
GABRIELLE
Xena, please. What is going on? Xena ignores her.
GABRIELLE
Ok, whatever. Xena, I need to talk to you about this morning. Xena turns and faces Gabrielle.
XENA
I think you made yourself clear. Gabrielle reaches out and holds on to Xena's arm.
GABRIELLE
Xena, I'm sorry. I should never have said the things I said today. I'm scared. I can't think about the future until this battle is over. Xena softens slightly. She knows she is taking out on Gabrielle her own feelings of insecurity.
GABRIELLE (continues)
Right now, at this moment, I am afraid of losing you, or Mekhi, or worse both of you to the Destroyer.
XENA
I think Mekhi will be able to take care of herself. She hits like a Titan swinging a war ax. Xena moves back to the stool and drops down on it. She sighs deeply.
Xena
You know, Gabrielle, I don't think you're sorry for what you said about me choosing someone else over you. Gabrielle moves over to stand closer to Xena. Xena looks up into Gabrielle's face.
Xena
And if you are sorry, you shouldn't be. I have put other people, other. . . things before you, and I never should have.
Gabrielle kneels in front of Xena, picks up a rag, and dabs
GAGBIELLE
It just hurt, Xena. You told me I was the most important thing in your life, but it seemed at times that other things were more important.
Xena reaches up and takes the hand that Gabrielle is using
XENA
You know, I asked you a long time ago how many times you were going to follow me into battle? How many times was I going to hurt you? Gabrielle interrupts her.
GABRIELLE
I told you then, and I'm telling you now, I choose to be with you, Xena. I love you.
Gabrielle is coming up the stairs and enters the hall. Zahar is coming toward the stairway. Gabrielle and Zahar look at one another with concern.
ZAHAR
Madam, may I speak with you.
GABRIELLE
Zahar, I really need to see Mekhi. Gabrielle tries to continue down the hall. Zahar moves to block Gabrielle's passing. Gabrielle is surprised by Zahar's behavior.
GABRIELLE
Zahar, please. Zahar looks sheepish and steps aside. Gabrielle starts back down the hall but stops.
GABRIELLE
I'm sorry, Zahar. Please, what is it?
Zahar walks to Gabrielle. ZAHAR
Madam, I just ran into Mekhi. She was obviously in a fight. I'm concerned. Gabrielle lowers her head and then looks back at Zahar.
GABRIELLE
Yes, with Xena. Neither of them would say why. Zahar is relieved and looks into Gabrielle's eyes and gently takes her face in his huge hand.
ZAHAR
You know why. Gabrielle lowers her eyes and Zahar releases her.
ZAHAR
They both love you. And for all their stoic, bravado, underneath we both know they are afraid of losing you.
Gabrielle moves away from Zahar and looks out a window in
GABRIELLE
Thank you, Zahar, but for them to come to blows over this... Zahar moves to the window and sits on the sill. Zahar gives a little chuckle.
ZAHAR
Don't worry about the fight, Gabrielle. They both know it was foolish. Gabrielle sits next to Zahar on the windowsill. Gabrielle is torn by her emotions.
GABRIELLE
I don't know what to do. Soon I will have to make a choice, and I'm not sure I will be able to. Zahar stands and looks down at Gabrielle.
ZAHAR
Gabrielle, I will tell you something I know if you will promise not to ask me how I know. Gabrielle looks at Zahar with wonder. Zahar smiles slightly.
ZAHAR
Promise?
GABRIELLE
Okay, I promise. Zahar changes to a very serious expression. Zahar again takes Gabrielle's face in his massive hands.
ZAHAR
You will never have to choose between Xena and Mekhi, Gabrielle. Zahar looks long and hard into Gabrielle's eyes and walks away. Gabrielle stands and turns to watch him go.
GABRIELLE
Zahar.
Zahar stops and turns to look at Gabrielle. GABRIELLE
How can you know that, Zahar?
ZAHAR
Trust me, Gabrielle. Zahar turns and walks away.
GABRIELLE
Zahar. Zahar, over his shoulder.
ZAHAR
You promised.
Mekhi is standing at the window obviously still angry. She has cleaned the blood from her nose, but her lip is still bleeding slightly. There is a knock at the door. Mekhi ignores it. There is another knock at the door. Mekhi ignores it again. The door opens and Gabrielle enters the room. Mekhi does not turn around to see who it is.
MEKHI
Please, Zahar, I need to be alone. Gabrielle shuts the door and starts to walk across the room. Mekhi turns around to confront Zahar and realizes it is Gabrielle.
GABRIELLE
Mekhi, I would like to talk to you. Mekhi turns back to the window.
MEKHI
Gabrielle, I'm tired. I'm not in the mood to talk.
Gabrielle comes close to Mekhi's shoulder and tries
GABRIELLE
I don't care. I need you to talk to me.
Xena is leaving the stable and walking back through the training area to the castle. She senses that something is behind her. She draws her sword and turns ready to fight. Standing a short distance from her in the shadows she sees a woman.
XENA
Gabrielle, is that you? The woman steps out of the shadow. Xena is shocked. The woman is not Gabrielle, but Hope.
XENA
Hope! Hope is wearing her robe, and her hood is over her head. She reaches up and removes it.
HOPE
Xena, it's been a long time. Xena attacks Hope. Hope uses her mental powers to drive Xena back. She lifts Xena off her feet with her powers and then tosses her to the ground like a rag doll.
HOPE
Won't mother be surprised when she sees me. Xena becomes enraged by the threat to Gabrielle. Xena attacks Hope again. Hope again raises Xena off the ground with her powers and throws her into a weapon rack full of staffs. Xena gets to her feet and turns to face Hope.
Xena
Who are you? I know what Hope's power felt like, and you are not Hope. Hope stands there and smiles at Xena.
HOPE
Well, well, aren't you the bright one. Hope morphs into The Destroyer. Xena is surprised to see this handsome man standing before her. She assumed he would look like the Destroyer she killed.
XENA
The Destroyer, I presume. The Destroyer lifts Xena off her feet and pulls her through the air to within a few feet of him. Xena struggles and groans in pain.
THE DESTROYER
Your recent death must have weakened you, Xena. The Destroyer drops Xena at his feet. Xena looks up to his face. The Destroyer looks down at Xena as though she were nothing more than a bug.
THE DESTROYER
I would have thought the murderer of my brother and my mother would somehow be stronger. Xena jumps to her feet and delivers several blows to the Destroyer. The Destroyer is knocked back several steps. He falls over another rack of weapons. Coming from the village, three soldiers are riding toward the stable and training area. The Destroyer gets to his feet as Xena is running at him for another attack. The Destroyer again lifts Xena off her feet with his powers. Xena struggles in midair. She groans from the pain. The Destroyer senses the soldiers coming.
THE DESTROYER
I will kill you, Xena. You and Mekhi. But you will watch Gabrielle die first. That is, if you and Mekhi don't kill each other first. The Destroyer vanishes into thin air. Xena drops to the ground gasping for breath. Xena is getting to her feet when the soldiers come riding up.
SOLDIER 1
Madam, a small force is attacking the village. Xena regains control of her breathing and looks at the soldiers.
XENA
Go to the castle and get Mekhi. I'll go on ahead. Xena runs for the stable, and the soldiers continue toward the castle. The soldiers run into Zahar and pull their horses to a stop.
SOLDIER 1
Sir, the village is being attacked.
ZAHAR I'll get Mekhi. (To Soldier 1)
You wait for us. (To other two soldiers) You two go and get my horse and Aurum. Zahar turns and starts running for the castle. The first soldier follows Zahar; the other two head for the stable.
Mekhi who was standing in front of the window moves away from Gabrielle to the fireplace. Gabrielle remains at the window but follows her movements with her eyes.
MEKHI
What is it you want me to say? Gabrielle moves to the fireplace and stands in front of Mekhi.
GABRIELLE
I don't want you to say anything. I want you to share what is in your heart. Mekhi and Gabrielle look into each other's eyes for a long moment.
GABRIELLE
Please, Mekhi. Tell me what you feel. For four years I've shared my life with you, told you how I feel, what I've hoped for. Mekhi walks back to the window. Gabrielle does not follow.
GABRIELLE
Please, for once tell me what is in that oh-so-guarded heart of yours. Mekhi still looks out the window with no response. A tear falls down Gabrielle's face.
GABRIELLE
Please. Mekhi turns toward her. She sees the tears in Gabrielle's eyes. They tear at her heart, but she is still unable to say the three words she knows Gabrielle wants to hear.
MEKHI
If only you knew the many times I have choked on words I have wanted to say to you. Gabrielle moves to the window but does not crowd Mekhi. She knows Mekhi is uncomfortable expressing the tender side of her personality.
GABRIELLE
Say them now, Mekhi. I'm listening. Mekhi turns to look out the window. She tries to summon the courage or will to say what she feels.
MEKHI
From the first moment I saw you fighting in the hospice, it was as though I knew you. Mekhi turns and looks at Gabrielle. She is still struggling with her emotions.
MEKHI
Your mannerisms, your voice, your eyes, they captured my soul from the first moment they looked into mine. Mekhi is defeated my her own emotional barriers and walks back to the fireplace and slumps in a chair.
MEKHI
You were familiar, not a stranger. Someone I could let inside this wall I keep around my heart. Mekhi leans back in the chair and looks away.
MEKHI
Then I read your scrolls. I knew your heart and soul belonged to Xena. Gabrielle walks over to Mekhi and kneels in front of her. Gabrielle puts her hands on Mekhi's knees.
GABRIELLE
Mekhi, when you came for me that day, what you didn't know was that I had given up. I had tried to go on without Xena, but I felt so empty. Mekhi turns her head to look at Gabrielle.
GABRIELLE
After he had beaten me and had his hands all over me, I just gave up. I felt so empty, so alone. I kept thinking, if Xena were there, she would never have let this happen to me. Gabrielle gets up and moves to the fire. She is saddened by the memory.
GABRIELLE
But she wasn't there. So when he started to rape me, I didn't fight him because I thought my life was nothing without Xena. Mekhi gets up and moves over to where Gabrielle is standing. Mekhi, for all her strength and control, cannot bear to see Gabrielle hurting.
GABRIELLE
And then.. there you were. I could see the strength in you even before you killed him. Mekhi starts to speak, but Gabrielle reaches up and puts her fingertips to Mekhi's lips. Mekhi does not continue. Gabrielle's hand falls back to her side.
GABRIELLE
You saved me, but more than that. In the days that followed, you, through your quiet way, allowed me to save myself and for that I will love you always.
Mekhi is moved by Gabrielle's words, but stays controlled.
MEKHI
I tried to distance myself from you, Gabrielle. Especially after I had read your scrolls. In my mind I knew your heart belonged to Xena, but my heart refused to listen.
Gabrielle stays by the fire but looks across to Mekhi and
GABRIELLE
Mekhi, I wrote the scrolls when Xena was a part of my life. I loved her. I still love her, but she chose to remain dead. I couldn't just shut off my heart... Gabrielle begins moving toward the window.
GABRIELLE
. . .I thought I could. I didn't want to risk love again. Then one day there you were. Gabrielle stops behind Mekhi's shoulder. Mekhi turns to face her.
MEKHI
I don't want to speak anymore about my feelings. It does no good to talk of things that can never be. Gabrielle is hurt but looks into Mekhi's eyes. She realizes Mekhi has convinced herself that she can only love Xena.
GABRIELLE
Why would you say that, Mekhi? Mekhi grabs Gabrielle by her shoulders.
MEKHI
Because, Gabrielle, Xena is alive. She is here now. I don't want my feelings for you to hurt you. I don't want to be the cause of any problems between you and Xena.
Gabrielle moves back to the fireplace and turns to
GABRIELLE
Mekhi, I can't deny my feelings for you or Xena. I had no way of knowing Xena would ever return. Mekhi leaves the window and comes to Gabrielle.
GABRIELLE
I wanted, no, I needed to hear you tell me how you feel.
MEKHI
I'm sorry that I have never spoken the words that I have so often felt. I thought you would just . . know.
GABRIELLE
I knew, Mekhi, by how you treated me, but I wanted to hear you tell me. Gabrielle puts her hand up and caresses Mekhi's face.
GABRIELLE
Thank you, Mekhi, for at least trying to share how you feel. I've waited so long to hear you tell me what is in your heart, but again your wall remains intact. Deep emotion is welling to the surface but held in check by Mekhi. She again feels as though she will crumble before Gabrielle's power over her. Mekhi takes Gabrielle's face in her hands. Gabrielle drops her hand from Mekhi's face. Mekhi, still controlling her emotion, looks deeply into Gabrielle's eyes. Gabrielle takes Mekhi's hands in hers and holds them to her breast. They both appear to be waiting for something more. Their moment is interrupted by pounding on the door. Zahar is calling through the door.
ZAHAR
Highness, there is a small advance party of the Destroyer's attacking the village. Xena has already left.
Mekhi takes one last look at Gabrielle and runs out the
ZAHAR
Aurum is outside Highness.
Mekhi and Zahar run out the door and jump on their horses.
Many shops and homes are burning. Village people are running trying to stay out of the way of the soldiers who are fighting. Xena is fighting off several of the Destroyer's men. Mekhi's soldiers fight with her. Mekhi and Zahar come riding into the village. Mekhi flips off of Aurum into the middle of several of the Destroyer's men. Zahar steps down off his horse and runs into the fray. The battle goes on for several minutes with images of Xena and Mekhi fighting. Xena defeats the soldiers in the immediate area around her and is looking for a new fight when she sees Gabrielle riding up. Gabrielle has changed into the clothes she was wearing when Xena saw her last. She is attacked by two soldiers, and she draws her sais and fights. Xena smiles and begins fighting a new group of soldiers. Mekhi does not notice Gabrielle for several minutes. Mekhi kills a soldier and looks for a new confrontation when she sees Gabrielle. Mekhi loses concentration and is standing looking at Gabrielle.
Gabrielle turns to see a warrior approaching Mekhi from
GABRIELLE
Mekhi! Behind you! Mekhi moves away from the full impact of the blow and is cut across the face.
Mekhi kills the attacker, and as she does, the Destroyer's troops begin to retreat.
GABRIELLE
Mekhi, are you okay? How bad is it? Gabrielle reaches out and touches the wound. Mekhi is looking at Gabrielle. Xena is smiling at Gabrielle.
XENA
I was wondering if you had forgotten how to fight. Gabrielle looks at Mekhi and then at Xena.
GABRIELLE
I try not to fight if I can avoid it. I just felt I needed to be here. Gabrielle looks back at Mekhi. Mekhi is angry.
Mekhi
We had this under control, Gabrielle. You didn't have to risk being here. Xena looks at Mekhi then to Gabrielle. She wants to see how Gabrielle will handle Mekhi's apparent anger at her being there. Xena can't help herself. She goads Mekhi by approving of Gabrielle.
XENA
Since I've been back this is the first time you looked like the old Gabrielle. Mekhi flashes fire from her eyes at Xena. Gabrielle is trying to ignore Mekhi's and Xena's behavior. She has reached up to touch the wound again to see how bad it is. Mekhi jerks her face from Gabrielle's grasp.
MEKHI (To Xena)
When will Gabrielle's choices be important to you, Xena? (To Gabrielle) And, Gabrielle, when will you make your choice and be faithful to yourself? Mekhi walks to Aurum, mounts, and rides away. Xena and Gabrielle watch her go.
XENA
What's that suppose to mean? Xena looks at Gabrielle. She realizes she has hurt Gabrielle and regrets her behavior. Gabrielle continues to watch Mekhi's departure. She is again feeling as though she is in the middle.
GABRIELLE
She doesn't want me to fight. She doesn't feel the way of the warrior is for me. Gabrielle looks at Xena. Gabrielle is sad and hurt.
GABRIELLE
Not in any circumstance. She sees me as a peace-keeper and a healer. Xena and Gabrielle begin to walk toward their horses.
XENA
So she told you not to fight and so you don't. Xena and Gabrielle reach their horses and mount. Gabrielle turns and faces Xena. Her tone is defensive.
GABRIELLE
No, Xena, one thing Mekhi has never done is told me anything. She may ask or not comment, but never has she told me to do anything. Xena and Gabrielle turn their horses and start to ride for the castle. Xena and Gabrielle are both unhappy.
Mekhi rides up over a slope and sees a warrior standing in the distance. The warrior has a hooded cape on. Mekhi knows without seeing the face who it is. Mekhi spurs Aurum into a run. The Destroyer stands his ground. Mekhi pulls Aurum to a sliding stop. Mekhi steps off of Aurum as though she hasn't a care in the world. The Destroyer and Mekhi pull their swords. They face off and briefly battle. They then pull away from each other.
MEKHI
What's wrong? You couldn't wait for the battle in the valley? The Destroyer removes his hood. He smiles.
THE DESTROYER
On the contrary, I simply couldn't wait to see Gabrielle again.
This causes Mekhi to attack once again. The fight is brief.
THE DESTROYER
My, my, what is it about that woman that makes two brilliant warriors like you and Xena completely lose their focus? Mekhi and the Destroyer begin to circle one another. Mekhi sneers.
MEKHI
You don't have the capacity to understand the reason.
THE DESTROYER
Maybe I'll ask Gabrielle for her opinion right before I cut her throat. Mekhi is enraged and attacks with all she has. The Destroyer is propelled backwards by Mekhi's assult. The Destroyer uses his mental power to knock Mekhi to the ground. Mekhi is stunned for a moment then gets to her feet. A rope like flame begins to encircle the Destroyer. He closes his eyes as if in ecstasy. Mekhi is mesmerized and stands watching the flame. The Destroyer opens his eyes, and the flame begins to reach out for Mekhi. Mekhi watches as the flame snakes toward her, but she doesn't move. Xena and Gabrielle have come up over the rise and see the flame reaching out for Mekhi. Xena throws her chakram. We see the chakram flying through the air and cutting through the flame right before it reaches Mekhi.
THE DESTROYER
Tell Gabrielle I'll see her soon. The Destroyer simply vanishes into thin air. Mekhi, still enraged, throws her sword at the spot the Destroyer was standing. Xena and Gabrielle come riding up.
GABRIELLE
Who was that? Mekhi is walking to pick up her sword and turns to Xena and Gabrielle.
MEKHI and XENA
The Destroyer.
A huge army is moving down the plain.
Xena, Gabrielle, Mekhi, and Zahar are all mounted and watching the columns of cavalry, foot soldiers, and

Highness, we should make it to the east end of the valley by early afternoon. Mekhi turns in the saddle to look at Zahar.
MEKHI
Good, we will make camp near the old temple of Athena when we arrive.
ZAHAR
I'm going to ride down and join the men. Zahar spurs his horse forward and rides down and joins the column. Mekhi turns and faces Gabrielle. Mekhi is being very cool toward Gabrielle and Xena.
MEKHI
The old temple will make a good field hospice. Gabrielle notices Mekhi's coolness.
GABRIELLE
Good idea. Mekhi looks back toward the column. Xena is being just as cool to Mekhi.
XENA
So, what's your plan after we make camp? Mekhi who was watching the column turns to look at Xena.
MEKHI
What makes you think I have a plan?
XENA
I would.
MEKHI
Of course you would. I thought a ride along the cliffs over looking the valley might be a good place to start. Xena begins to move Argo toward the column.
XENA
I'll join you. I wouldn't want you to get lost.
Mekhi watches Xena move away. She shakes her head and looks Gabrielle watches them both, sadness fills her face. She then moves down toward the column.
Soldiers are moving around making camp and setting up the hospice inside the temple. Gabrielle is standing by the door directing the soldiers on where to put certain items. She is still wearing her warrior apparel and sais. Xena walks up the stairs to where Gabrielle is standing.
XENA
How much longer do you think you will be? Gabrielle turns and looks at Xena.
GABRIELLE
We're about finished. Is there a problem?
Xena is looking out over the camp. XENA
No. I would just like to talk to you. Gabrielle turns to tell a soldier where to put the last of her supplies for the hospice. Xena is still looking out over the camp as if she is trying to find something in particular.
GABRIELLE
Okay, Xena, what is it? Xena stops scanning the camp and looks at Gabrielle.
XENA
Have you seen Mekhi?
GABRIELLE
No, not since we started unloading the wagons for the hospice. Gabrielle senses Xena is holding something back.
GABRIELLE
Xena, Mekhi is somewhere in camp. Have you tried her tent? Xena has resumed the scanning of the camp.
XENA
Yes, I looked there first.
Gabrielle reaches out and takes Xena's arm. She turns Xena toward her. GABRIELLE
Xena, what is it? You're acting as if Mekhi has disappeared. Xena turns back to the camp.
XENA
More like sneaked away. Gabrielle is exasperated.
GABRIELLE
Xena, what is the matter with you? Xena notices the frustration in Gabrielle's voice and turns and takes her shoulders in her hands.
XENA
Gabrielle, listen to me, there is something about Mekhi that is just. . . off. Gabrielle shrugs Xena's hands off her shoulders.
GABRIELLE
Xena, don't ask me to doubt her.
XENA
Gabrielle, I am telling you there is something she is keeping from you. . .from me. Gabrielle is becoming angry and walks away from Xena and sits on one of the steps.
GABRIELLE
Xena, I trust her. Xena comes down the steps and turns to face Gabrielle.
XENA
What if she is just another zealot like Najara? What if she is tricking us like Khrafstar? Gabrielle jumps to her feet and walks down enough of the stairs to be eye level with Xena.
GABRIELLE
Stop it, Xena. Stop it. I trust her. I believe in her God. I believe in her. Xena puts her hand out and touches Gabrielle's arm. Xena softens.
XENA
Okay, Gabrielle, but there is something she is holding back. Xena releases Gabrielle's arm and turns to walk down the stairs. She pauses and turns back to Gabrielle.
XENA
If it endangers you in anyway, I will take her out. Xena turns to walk down the stairs and sees Mekhi riding up on Aurum. Xena stops a few steps from the bottom.
MEKHI
Xena, I've been looking for you.
XENA
Funny, I was looking for you. Mekhi dismounts from Aurum and walks to the bottom of the steps. She looks up at Gabrielle and notices Gabrielle looks upset.
MEKHI
I was about to take that ride along the cliffs. I was wondering if you still wanted to come?
XENA
Wouldn't miss it for the world. I'll get Argo and meet you at the edge of camp. Mekhi is still watching Gabrielle and does not turn to look at Xena.
MEKHI
Sounds good. I'll see you in a minute. Xena walks away. Mekhi drops Aurum's reins and walks up the stairs to Gabrielle. Mekhi looks Gabrielle up and down with a disapproving expression.
GABRIELLE
Don't ask, please.
MEKHI
Then I wont. We'll be back soon. Mekhi turns to leave. Gabrielle, because of Xena's comments, has become doubtful of Mekhi.
GABRIELLE
Mekhi. . . you wouldn't hide anything from me. . . would you? Mekhi turns back to Gabrielle. She detects the doubt in Gabrielle's voice. She is disappointed and angered by it, but she controls her feelings and answers flatly.
MEKHI
Gabrielle, I know Xena doesn't trust me. I can even understand her feelings, but if I don't share every little thing you can trust it is to protect you and Xena as God has instructed me to do. Mekhi turns again and walks to the bottom of the stairs and picks up Aurum's reins. Mekhi mounts Aurum and looks back up at Gabrielle. Gabrielle has known her long enough to realize her words have upset Mekhi, yet Mekhi remains in control.
MEKHI
Gabrielle, I don't need Xena's trust. I would like to have it. But I don't need it. . . I do need yours. I deserve yours. Mekhi turns Aurum and rides away. Gabrielle watches after her and feels as though she has stabbed Mekhi in the back with her doubt.
Xena and Mekhi are riding through a dense forest. They do not talk. Mekhi turns to Xena.
MEKHI
We'll stop here and walk to the valley rim. Mekhi and Xena stop their horses and dismount. They walk in silence to the rocky edge of the rim.
XENA
I'll walk back toward the east. You can walk to the west.
MEKHI
Are you sure you want to separate? I wouldn't want you to think I was hiding anything from you. Xena, who was turning to leave, turns back and glares at Mekhi.
XENA
You know you're right, let's stay together. Xena and Mekhi start walking toward the west.
Gabrielle is putting away a few blankets in her tent. At first Gabrielle relaxes thinking it is her fox from the garden, but then she realizes something is different. The fox is very dark, not red. The fox begins to walk toward her, and as it does, it morphs into the Destroyer. Gabrielle begins to walk backwards and also starts looking for her sais. She sees them on a table and still facing the Destroyer moves toward them. The Destroyer keeps advancing. Gabrielle is so intent on the sais and the Destroyer she doesn't see a bag and trips over it and falls to the ground. Before she can make a move, the Destroyer is on her and lifts her to her feet by her throat. Gabrielle struggles and moans in pain. The Destroyer smiles.
THE DESTROYER
Well, well, well, if it isn't my mother's mother. I guess that would make you my what? Grandmother? The Destroyer throws Gabrielle across the room and against the bed. Gabrielle is hurt and crouches on the floor. The Destroyer crosses the room and picks Gabrielle up by her throat again and tosses her on the bed. He looms over her.
Xena and Mekhi have stopped to look out over the valley floor.
XENA
It doesn't look like we will have to worry about an attack from the rim. Mekhi moves back from the rim and leans against a large boulder.
MEKHI
I figured the terrain would be too rough to drag catapults up to the rim. Xena turns away from the rim and faces Mekhi.
XENA
He could still move archers in before the morning.
MEKHI
True, I will send a regiment of my archers just in case.
Xena now moves to a smaller boulder across from Mekhi and sits down. XENA
I need to tell you something. I had a little run in with the Destroyer last night before the village was attacked. Mekhi pushes off the rock and stands.
MEKHI
What did he want, and what form was he in? Xena adjust herself on the boulder.
XENA
So, you're aware he can take on different forms? Mekhi takes a few steps toward Xena.
MEKHI
Yes, he's very deceptive, which makes him even more dangerous. What did he want? Xena stands.
XENA
He just wanted to tell me his plans for you and me, but mostly he wanted to tell me what he was going to do to Gabrielle. Mekhi walks over to the rim and looks out over the valley floor. Mekhi's anger surfaces with the threat to Gabrielle.
MEKHI
That bastard is trying to use Gabrielle to make us lose our focus. He threatened her to me last night as well.
XENA
As far as I'm concerned, he can try to do whatever he wants with us. But Dahak and his son will not cause Gabrielle another moment of pain. Mekhi takes one more look at the valley floor and starts to walk from the rim.
MEKHI
Xena, you will kill the Destroyer. God has faith in you, and I have faith in God. Xena turns from the rim and faces Mekhi.
XENA
Where's your faith in me?
MEKHI
I guess the same place your trust is for me. Xena and Mekhi look steadily into each other eyes. A feeling of foreboding interrupts their stare down. The feeling washes over them simultaneously.
XENA
Gabrielle - she's in trouble. Xena and Mekhi start running for the horses.
Gabrielle lies in the fetal position holding her throat and gasping. The Destroyer gets on the bed and roughly pulls Gabrielle onto her back and straddles her. Gabrielle cries out in pain.
THE DESTROYER
Gabrielle, I could kill you so easily. Gabrielle is crying because of the pain, but is angry.
GABRIELLE
Then why don't you just do it and get it over with. Gabrielle brings up her other hand to strike the Destroyer, but he grabs that wrist as well and pins both her hands above her head.
THE DESTROYER
Temper, temper. He leans in and gets very close to her face. He begins to kiss her face and neck. Gabrielle is struggling to no avail. Gabrielle is afraid; she is helpless in his grasp.
THE DESTROYER
You try to hide it, Gabrielle, but my father strikes your heart cold with fear. He stops kissing her and looks into her eyes. Gabrielle is trying not to cry, but tears roll down her face.
THE DESTROYER
You could have been his queen, but instead you chose to help Xena destroy your own daughter.
GABRIELLE
Please, please, stop... The Destroyer takes her shirt and rips it open exposing her naked torso. Gabrielle is now becoming terrified. Tears continue to roll down her face as she struggles. The Destroyer takes his free hand and grabs her face.
THE DESTROYER
My father planted his seed in you, Gabrielle, and you repaid him by helping to kill your own daughter. The Destroyer releases his hold on Gabrielle's face and begins to caress her again.
GABRIELLE
Please . . . He leans down close to her face again.
THE DESTROYER
I get the feeling you wouldn't be interested in carrying my seed either. Gabrielle's eyes open wide in terror.
GABRIELLE
No, no, I will kill myself first.
He kisses Gabrielle on the lips for a long moment. Gabrielle is frantic. The Destroyer gets up off the bed and Gabrielle. He again looms over her. THE DESTROYER
Don't worry your pretty head over it, Gabrielle; you had your chance. I'm not going to kill you today, Gabrielle. I want to see the expressions on Xena's and Mekhi's faces when I kill you. Gabrielle curls into the fetal position again and rocks back and forth crying.
THE DESTROYER
Until tomorrow. The Destroyer vanishes.
Xena and Mekhi are running their horses through camp toward Gabrielle's tent. Men are jumping and running to stay out of their way. Xena and Mekhi pull their horses to a stop and dismount. Weapons drawn, they enter Gabrielle's tent. They see Gabrielle lying on the bed weeping. Xena sheathes her sword and runs to Gabrielle. Xena turns her over and lifts her upper body into her arms. Mekhi and Xena both notice that her shirt has been ripped away. Xena covers her with the bedclothes. Xena brushes Gabrielle's hair out of her face and notices the marks on her wrists and throat. Mekhi looks at the marks as well. Mekhi and Xena are enraged but controlled.
XENA
Oh, sweetheart, what happened.
Gabrielle buries her face into Xena's arms and cries. Xena looks up at Mekhi. For a split second Xena thinks she sees Mekhi's eyes glow. Mekhi turns her back to gain control, then turns back to Xena and Gabrielle. Gabrielle lifts her head and tries to control her crying. GABRIELLE
I, I couldn't do anything to stop him. He put his hands all over me. I feel so dirty Xena. Like I did in Dahak's temple all those years ago.
Gabrielle buries her head in Xena's arms and cries softly.
XENA
Gabrielle, he wanted to make you feel this way. He was sending a message. Mekhi kneels down to look into Gabrielle's eyes. Mekhi is seething with rage.
MEKHI
Gabrielle, I should never have left you alone. I should have had Zahar guarding you. Gabrielle reaches out and holds Mekhi's hand. Mekhi gently kisses Gabrielle's hand. Xena and Mekhi look at one another. For once their anger is directed at the same target.
XENA
We both messed up. Mekhi holds Gabrielle's hand to her face for a brief moment and then stands.
MEKHI
I swear, Gabrielle, the next time that monster touches you, it will be his last moment on earth. Mekhi turns and storms out of the tent. Xena watches Mekhi leave and then cradles Gabrielle against her.
GABRIELLE
Xena, I am so afraid. I can't go through this again. Dahak nearly destroyed me the first time. Xena holds Gabrielle tighter.
XENA
Gabrielle, Dahak and his son will be no more after tomorrow I swear it.
Mekhi is storming through camp looking for Zahar. Mekhi sees him talking to some of the men near her tent. Mekhi stops a short distance away and calls to Zahar.
MEKHI
Zahar, may I speak with you? Zahar looks from the men to Mekhi and sees that she is extremely upset and fighting for control. Zahar quickly excuses himself from the men and walks quickly to where Mekhi is standing. The other men walk away.
ZAHAR
Yes, Highness. What is it? Mekhi has lowered her head and rubs her brow as though her head is hurting. Zahar reaches out and touches her shoulder.
ZAHAR
Highness. . . Mekhi lifts her head and for a moment Zahar sees her eyes have changed to amber and are glowing.
MEKHI
Help me, Zahar, I am losing control. Zahar picks Mekhi up and carries her into Mekhi's tent. Zahar puts her in a camp chair. Mekhi still rubs her brow as though her head is hurting.
MEKHI
That bastard came into this camp and put his hands on Gabrielle. Zahar sits in a chair next to Mekhi.
ZAHAR
You mean the Destroyer? Mekhi slams her fist into the table. She looks up into Zahar's face and for a few seconds her eyes are amber again and glowing.
MEKHI
Yes, the son-of-a-bitch. Zahar reaches out and touches Mekhi's hand.
ZAHAR
Highness, is Gabrielle okay? Mekhi has lowered her head. She squeezes Zahar's hand to fight for control. Mekhi lifts her head and her eyes are normal again.
MEKHI
If you can call being terrified okay. Xena is with her. Zahar pats Mekhi's hand to comfort her.
ZAHAR
Highness, he was just trying to make . . . Mekhi looks at Zahar.
MEKHI
Make me lose control. . . my focus. Zahar gets up and pours Mekhi a drink. Zahar returns to the table and hands the glass to Mekhi.
ZAHAR
Yes, Highness, by using Gabrielle he hopes to play you into his hands. Mekhi takes a sip of the drink and leans back in the chair.
MEKHI
Your right, Zahar, old friend. He knows there is more to me than what he or anyone else sees on the surface. Zahar sits again in the chair.
ZAHAR
Yes, Highness, he does. He isn't sure what it is, but he does know you have a power of some kind. Why else would you have been able to kill four of his brothers. Mekhi leans forward in her chair.
MEKHI
My power comes from God.
Zahar nods his head in agreement and smiles slightly. ZAHAR
That's true, Highness, but you and I both know there is a power in you that was present before you accepted Him into your life. He only made it greater.
Gabrielle and Xena are now sitting at the table. Gabrielle has changed into a dress. Xena is patting Gabrielle's outstretched arm. From outside the tent flap they hear Zahar's voice.
ZAHAR
Madam, may I come in? Gabrielle smiles at Xena.
GABRIELLE
Yes, Zahar, please come in. Zahar enters the tent and bows slightly to Gabrielle. He nods at Xena.
ZAHAR
I wanted to tell you that I will personally be posted outside your tent. If you need to go anywhere, I will accompany you. Gabrielle smiles at Zahar.
GABRIELLE
I won't even try to argue with you, Zahar. I know Mekhi has sent you. Thank you.
XENA
Does Mekhi think I am incapable of protecting you? Gabrielle again looks at Xena in exasperation.
GABRIELLE
Xena, please. Of course she knows you could protect me. She just wants to make sure I'm being watched. Xena softens and smiles at Gabrielle.
XENA
I will not fail you again, Gabrielle. Gabrielle reaches out and takes one of Xena's hands that were resting on the table.
GABRIELLE
Please, Xena, don't. You have never failed me. Xena becomes emotional and tears well into her eyes.
XENA
Gabrielle, I lost my focus once trying to stop Caesar and nearly lost you forever because of it. Gabrielle reaches out and pushes Xena's hair back and resumes holding her hand.
GABRIELLE
Xena, that is in the past. We forgave one another a long time ago for those hurts. Xena removes her hand from Gabrielle's and then takes both of Gabrielle's in hers.
XENA
Yes, but I still continue to hurt you, to fail you. I . . . Gabrielle pulls Xena's hands toward her chest.
GABRIELLE
Xena, I wish I could take that conversation in the garden back. You're my hero and you always will be. Xena stands and as she does she pulls Gabrielle up with her.
Xena
I really don't deserve a friend like you. Gabrielle looks into Xena's eyes.
GABRIELLE
Yes, you do, and I deserve you. I love you. Xena reaches down and kisses Gabrielle briefly on the lips.
XENA
I need to go and find Mekhi. We need to settle a few things before tomorrow.
Gabrielle sighs deeply and then looks at Xena. GABRIELLE
Xena, please don't fight with her. Our battle lies at the other end of this valley. Xena leans down and kisses Gabrielle's cheek.
XENA
No fighting. We need to come to an understanding; that's all. Do you feel safe here with Zahar? Gabrielle smiles.
GABRIELLE
Yes, Zahar would die for me. Xena turns to leave and says over her shoulder.
XENA
Wouldn't we all. Xena leaves the tent and Gabrielle turns back to the table. Her bag is resting on the edge. Gabrielle notices movement out of the corner of her eye. She turns quickly toward the movement and in so doing knocks her bag off the table spilling its contents. She sees a fox sitting by the bed. Gabrielle catches her breath and fear rises in her. She starts to cry out for Zahar but stops when she realizes this is her fox. Gabrielle is cautious. The events earlier have made her wary.
GABRIELLE
What are you doing here? Did you follow me? The fox walks to within a few feet of Gabrielle but not too close as though it knows she is unsure and afraid. The fox sits and cocks its head as if listening.
GABRIELLE
I'm sorry, my little friend, I had a big scare earlier today. The fox remains where it is. Still looking as though it understands every word Gabrielle speaks. Gabrielle relaxes and notices her bag and its' spilled contents. She notices a tiny scroll. Its ribbon has come undone and allowed the scroll to unravel slightly. Gabrielle picks it up and unrolls it completely. She smiles a smile of sweet remembrance as she reads the scroll. INSERT - THE SCROLL We see the scroll unroll in Gabrielle's hands. It is written in Latin.
GABRIELLE (VO)
Gabrielle,
Love is on the way, Gabrielle, on wings of angels love will come to you in the very near future.
I will hold in my heart forever the love we shared last night.
Love, BACK TO SCENE Gabrielle smiles tenderly. She sits in a chair near the table and remembers.

Gabrielle is standing holding the scroll, lost in her memories. The fox is gone and Xena is standing at the
XENA
Gabrielle? Gabrielle is brought out of her thoughts with the sound of her name. She looks at Xena, who is crossing over to where Gabrielle is standing.
GABRIELLE
Xena, I thought you were going to speak with Mekhi.
XENA
I was, but she has gone to place the archers on the cliffs. What's that? Gabrielle looks down at the scroll in her hand. She hesitates for a moment and then looks back up at Xena.
GABRIELLE
It's a note that someone left me a few weeks ago. Xena gives Gabrielle an appraising look.
XENA
Yea, who? Gabrielle deciding to tease Xena a little smiles smugly.
GABRIELLE
From a man, if you must know. His name is Tenko. Xena cocks her eyebrow at Gabrielle and looks at her with interest.
XENA
Oh, really, and who is this Tenko guy? Gabrielle moves across the room to the bed and sits on the edge. She looks as though she is remembering again and then as if she is trying to decide whether to tell Xena or not.
Gabrielle
He came to my hospice with an elderly woman who was very ill. We spent the evening together.
Xena isn't sure what Gabrielle means by the evening. She comes to the bed and sits beside Gabrielle. She looks at
GABRIELLE
Cat got your tongue, Xena. Xena is still too shocked to respond.
GABRIELLE
Not something you would think sweet, innocent Gabrielle would do. Right? Xena finally finds her voice even if it is a little weak.
XENA
Who was this guy, Gabrielle?
Gabrielle turns slightly so she can face Xena more directly. She takes the scroll from Xena's hand and
GABRIELLE
It's horrible to say, but I really don't know. Xena, it was as if he cast a spell on me, but I lay with him willingly. I couldn't stop myself. I didn't want to stop myself. Xena is looking a little concerned. Fear is showing in her eyes and Gabrielle sees this. Gabrielle takes Xena's hands.
XENA
I don't know what to say.
GABRIELLE
Xena, I can't explain it, but it was as though we had known each other always; and even though I knew he was there for only a brief moment, I wanted to be with him. Xena gets up off the bed and walks back across the room. She is still very confused, not really understanding.
XENA
What did he mean by love being on the way? Gabrielle gets up and comes over to Xena and stands in front of her. She smiles slightly.
GABRIELLE
At first I thought it meant I would have a baby, that I would get a second chance to be a mother. Now I know he was telling me that you were coming back to me. You're the love he was talking about because two weeks later you and Mekhi came home. Xena smiles at her but still looks concerned.
XENA
But why this guy, and why would he seduce you? This doesn't make sense. Gabrielle is now becoming concerned.
GABRIELLE
It wasn't a seduction, Xena, and if it were, I would have been the seductress. I don't know, Xena. I never felt afraid or that I was in danger. I felt totally and completely loved. Gabrielle all of sudden becomes frightened and tears start to well up in her eyes. Xena sees the fear rising in Gabrielle's face.
Xena
Gabrielle, what is it. What's wrong? Gabrielle begins to slump to the floor. Xena kneels down to comfort her.
GABRIELLE
Xena, oh, Xena, you don't think he was the Destroyer. You don't think I could be... Gabrielle rests the weight of her body against Xena and Xena holds her.
XENA
No, no, Gabrielle. When Dahak planted his seed in you, it grew within a few days. Xena pushes Gabrielle gently away from her until she can look into her face.
GABRIELLE
I felt so loved, Xena. He was so tender and gentle. I can't believe there was any evil in this man. Xena tries to smile a reassuring smile.
XENA
I trust your judgment, Gabrielle. Maybe he was a messenger bringing my love back to you. What did Mekhi say about him? Gabrielle looks guilty and averts her eyes.
GABRIELLE
I never told her. The next time I saw her was when you both returned.
Mekhi is kneeling in prayer. Xena walks around the corner and sees Mekhi praying. Xena stops and Mekhi gets to her feet and walks to the railing and leans on it, looking out toward the valley.
MEKHI
Good evening, Xena. Xena looks a little surprised. Mekhi turns to face Xena and leans on the rail. Xena walks over to where Mekhi is. Xena also leans on the rail but faces the valley.
XENA
I was wondering if we could talk without shedding blood.
MEKHI
That's up to you. Xena pushes off the rail and looks at Mekhi. Mekhi returns her look and smiles slightly. Xena relaxes. Both are still wary of each other.
XENA
Obviously, Mekhi, we didn't start out well. I felt we needed to air some things out before the battle tomorrow. Mekhi turns and faces the valley. Xena does the same.
MEKHI
I agree. I know it must be difficult for you to be going into battle with someone you don't trust.
XENA
Mekhi, I know you are not telling me or Gabrielle everything there is to expect tomorrow. Mekhi walks down the rail a few steps and turns to face Xena again. She leans against the rail. She is thoughtful for a moment. Xena waits for her response.
MEKHI
Your right, Xena, I am keeping something from you. I won't reveal what it is. I can't. I can tell you that it will not in anyway endanger you or Gabrielle. Xena moves down the rail and stops a few steps away from Mekhi. She is angry.
XENA
How do you expect me to walk into a battle knowing I don't have all the information. Would you? Mekhi again looks very deep in thought and does not respond fast enough for Xena. Xena turns around and walks away from Mekhi in disgust.
MEKHI
Xena, you have all the information you need to do your part of this plan. It is very simple, drive the blade of the katana through his heart. Xena doesn't respond to Mekhi. She is standing at the rail with her back to Mekhi.
MEKHI
Xena, I know I am asking you to do something based on faith. Remember when you told Eli that some things don't bear too much thinking about, but some things you just have to take on faith? This is one of those times. Xena turns and looks back at Mekhi. Mekhi walks to within a few feet of Xena.
XENA
Okay, Mekhi, on faith and the fact that Gabrielle loves you and trusts you totally, I'll follow you. What did you do? Read every one of Gabrielle's scrolls. Mekhi jumps up on the rail and sits with her back to a column. She smiles. Xena's anger is gone.
Mekhi
Every word of every one. It took me days. Xena also jumps on the rail and sits with her back against an opposite column so she can face Mekhi.
XENA
I read a few of them, but not all of them. MEKHI
You should have. Maybe then you would see the Gabrielle that I see.
XENA
How do you see her?
MEKHI
I see a woman who loves her friend more than herself and is willing to pay any price, no matter how high, to be with her. Even if it means she suffers sometimes more than she can bear. Xena slides off the wall and leans on it, turning to face Mekhi.
XENA
Go on. Mekhi doesn't move. She just keeps looking at Xena with eyes that seem to penetrate to her very soul.
MEKHI
Xena, she loves you, but she wants a home. A place where she knows where she will be from day to day. Xena averts her eyes and looks down cast.
XENA
I know. We never stayed in the same place more than a few days. Mekhi continues her steady gaze at Xena.
MEKHI
She isn't a warrior, Xena. She thinks she has to be because she wants you to be proud of her. When you chose to die, she tried for months to fight your fight. She couldn't. She went home and started a hospice, and she began to be herself, but she felt guilty. So, when she heard of the battles against evil, she came to fight and to heal. She was so torn, and she was also very angry with you. Xena looks at Mekhi in surprise.
XENA
Angry?
MEKHI
Yes, angry. You tell her she must let you go for the greater good, that it is the right thing to do. Then, when it is too late, she thinks about when she tried to choose the greater good after killing that boy in the desert and you wouldn't let her die. The greater good wasn't as important as her, but it was more important than you. Once again you made the choice without considering her. How do you think that choice affected her? With you gone she had no one to help her, so she lived with the guilt of knowing she had let you die, while you refused to let her. Mekhi gets down off the rail and approaches Xena. She stops only a very short distance from her. Xena's eyes have filled with tears.
XENA
So, once again I chose others over her. I left her for my own . . .
MEKHI
Xena, after reading Gabrielle's scrolls I could show you time after time when Gabrielle went along with your choices even though the choices you made hurt her, but she loves you and can't think of her life without you. Mekhi moves closer to Xena. Xena lowers her eyes.
XENA
The worst thing I ever did was make her leave Hope. I never let her be a mother. Maybe she could have helped her fight her dark side. Maybe my son would still be alive. We will never know. The tears that were welling up in Xena's eyes begin to fall down her face. Mekhi is unsure what to do.
MEKHI
Xena, I know for a fact that Hope was doomed. Gabrielle's heart still would have been broken. Yes, maybe you should have let her try, but the outcome would have been the same. Xena steps away from Mekhi and leans out over the rail.
XENA
Why do I hurt her? Why do I lead her into situations I know are not good for her? Why? Mekhi walks to the rail and stands close to Xena. She puts her hand on Xena's, which is clutching the rail.
Mekhi
Because you look for redemption that you will never find. At least not where you are looking for it. Xena, being a little embarrassed by her emotion in front of Mekhi, wipes her face and tries to regain control.
XENA
Tell me where to look Mekhi. Tell me where to find this redemption so that I can sleep at night, so I can be to Gabrielle what she has always been for me. So I can stop hurting her.
MEKHI
It's right under your nose, Xena. So close and yet you can't or won't see it. Xena looks at Mekhi confused. Mekhi smiles and releases Xena's hand.
XENA
Then point it out to me.
MEKHI
Think, Xena. In those times you felt there was no other way out of a situation or when you thought you would lose Gabrielle, what did you do? You prayed. And who did you pray to? Who do you think gave Callisto the power to give you your daughter, Eve? (More)
MEKHI (cont'd)
Who spoke to you at your daughter's baptism and gave you the power to kill gods, and when you became too arrogant and tried to kill the Archangel Michael, who do you think took that power away? Who, Xena? Who?
Xena turns back to the rail and looks up to a beautiful
XENA
You want me to pray? You want me to ask some God for redemption.
MEKHI
Not some god, Xena, but the God you have always known was out there waiting for you. It's not like you haven't been asked before. This wall of loneliness which excludes God from your world, the people you have hurt, and probably worst of all, the voice of your guilty conscience which will never be silenced, will haunt you until you ask Him to wash it all away. Xena looks at Mekhi.
XENA
You speak as though you've been in my place.
MEKHI
Oh, have I ever been in your place. We are both warriors, Xena. Because of the path we chose, our lives led us astray. I just found the way of God a little sooner, and I have had peace since I asked Him for His guidance. I didn't stop being a warrior. I just stopped looking for redemption at the end of a sword. Mekhi moves in front of Xena and takes her arms in her hands. Mekhi looks intently into Xena's eyes.
Mekhi
Leave the past and the future to God, Xena. If you will accept Him, you will have that peace you have so longed for, and most importantly, you will be exactly the person you want to be for Gabrielle. Mekhi turns to walk away from Xena. Xena is in deep thought. Xena realizes Mekhi is walking away and looks after her.
XENA
Mekhi. Mekhi stops and turns to face Xena.
MEKHI
Yes, Xena? Xena walks the distance between Mekhi and herself stopping just in front of Mekhi.
XENA
I will think about what you said. Mekhi turns to leave again but stops and turns back to Xena.
MEKHI
Xena, one more thing. Gabrielle is your friend, your defender, your soul mate. You are her life and her love. She will be yours, faithful and true, to the last beat of her heart. You owe it to her to be worthy of such devotion. Xena is profoundly affected by Mekhi's words and notices a trace of sadness in her voice.
XENA
Mekhi, one question before you go. Do you have any regrets? Mekhi looks out over the valley and at the beautiful night sky. Then back to Xena.
MEKHI
Only two. One. I wish we could have been friends. Two. I regret that I'm jealous of you. What it must feel like to be loved with such devotion. Mekhi holds Xena's eyes with hers for a moment and then turns and leaves. Xena watches after her and a single tear rolls down Xena's cheek.
Xena has walked from the porch of the temple into the overgrown garden. She stands for a moment and looks at the beautiful night sky and then sinks to her knees.
EXT. TEMPLE FOUNTAIN - NIGHT Mekhi has walked to the front of the temple to the broken down fountain. She sits on the edge and looks down toward the fires of the camp. She sees Gabrielle walking toward her from the direction of the camp. Not far behind her is Zahar. Gabrielle is still wearing the dress she changed into after her attack by the Destroyer. Zahar stops and sits on a stump at a discreet distance.
GABRIELLE
You're a hard person to find. I'm glad you never invited me to come on your campaigns. I would have felt neglected. Gabrielle notices how Mekhi looks her up and down and then smiles.
MEKHI
I would never have neglected you. Gabrielle holds out her arms and turns as if she is modeling her dress.
GABRIELLE
I guess you approve? Mekhi shakes her head in the affirmative and smiles.
MEKHI
It suits you. This is how I will always see you. Gabrielle comes and sits next to Mekhi on the fountain.
GABRIELLE
I don't want you to be surprised tomorrow like you were last night. I will be dressed for battle in the morning. Mekhi turns and looks into Gabrielle's eyes.
MEKHI
Why? You aren't needed as a warrior. I need you to help with the wounded. Gabrielle is frustrated. She looks perturbed with Mekhi.
GABRIELLE
Mekhi, think about what I was wearing the first time you saw me. Think about what I was doing. Mekhi sighs and faces the camp again. Gabrielle feels bad for hurting Mekhi.
MEKHI
I have never told you anything, so I don't know why I'm trying to now. Gabrielle puts her arm around Mekhi's shoulders and gives her a quick hug.
GABRIELLE
I'm going to be dressed for battle. I didn't say I was going to fight. Mekhi looks at Gabrielle. She really isn't sure what Gabrielle's meaning is.
MEKHI
What do you mean?
GABRIELLE
I'm going to follow your advance, but if I feel I need to fight at some point, I want to be ready. Mekhi's look softens.
MEKHI
Thank you, Gabrielle. Gabrielle leans her head on Mekhi's shoulder.
GABRIELLE
Don't thank me. I still may feel I need to fight. Gabrielle remains with her head resting on Mekhi's shoulder for several seconds. She then lifts her head and looks at Mekhi. Mekhi is looking again at the fires of the camp.
GABRIELLE
Mekhi, what are you thinking? Mekhi looks away from the camp and pats Gabrielle on the leg. She stands and turns toward Gabrielle.
MEKHI
I am thinking about how many of those brave men will never see their loved ones again. Gabrielle reaches out and takes Mekhi's hand and pulls her down to sit beside her again. They look at one another.
GABRIELLE
Mekhi, those men love you. They would follow you into the gates of hell.
MEKHI
And that is exactly where I will lead them tomorrow. Gabrielle looks tenderly at Mekhi. She is saddened by Mekhi's worry.
GABRIELLE
Mekhi, you will come home to me after this battle is won? Mekhi looks away from Gabrielle and out into the night.
MEKHI
I will always come home to you, Gabrielle.
GABRIELLE
Mekhi, you have avoided me ever since we went on our ride together. It's as if you want me to spend all my time with Xena. Mekhi stands and leans against a tree next to the fountain.
Mekhi
I'm sorry, Gabrielle, if you think I have avoided you. I just wanted you to have time with Xena. This battle will cost a great price, and we are all in danger until it is over. Gabrielle comes to Mekhi and takes her hands in hers.
GABRIELLE
Mekhi, you will be in as much danger as Xena. I want to have time with both of you. Mekhi leans away from the tree which makes the distance between Gabrielle and herself very small.
MEKHI
Gabrielle, no matter what might happen tomorrow, all I care about is that you know how much I loved you.
GABRIELLE
Did you say love. . . no wait, you said loved instead of love, as if you aren't coming back. Mekhi smiles and brings one of Gabrielle's hands up to her lips and kisses it.
MEKHI
You know what I mean. I just want you to know how I feel.
GABRIELLE
Do you realize this is the first time you have used the word love?
MEKHI
No, I didn't. Mekhi tries to move away from Gabrielle but she holds her hands and makes her stay.
GABRIELLE
I won't see you until tomorrow. Zahar says you have a ritual you go through before a battle. No one sees you until you are ready to lead your men into battle. I have never seen you in battle. I think you must be something to see according to Zahar. Mekhi smiles.
MEKHI
I am going to have to get someone else to watch over you. Zahar gives away too many of my secrets.
GABRIELLE
Mekhi, you underestimate me. I know you think my heart is only for Xena, but you couldn't be more wrong. Love is the only thing I know that can be divided endlessly and still not be diminished. I can and I do love you both.
Gabrielle looks up into Mekhi's eyes expectantly. Mekhi wants more than anything to reach down and kiss her, but
Xena is still kneeling, but a soft heavenly light washes over her. It diminishes and Xena gets to her feet. We can
Gabrielle is lying on the bed. Xena enters through the flap.
XENA
Are you asleep? Gabrielle rises to one elbow.
GABRIELLE
No, I was waiting on you. Where have you been? Xena is walking from the flap to Gabrielle's bed. Gabrielle sits up and swings her legs over the edge. She looks up into Xena's face and can see something has changed in her.
GABRIELLE
Xena, what's happened? Xena sits by Gabrielle on the bed. She turns and takes Gabrielle's hands in hers. She looks deeply into Gabrielle's eyes.
XENA
Something, but I don't want to talk about it right now. Next to you it's the best thing that has ever happened, and I want to tell you when this is all over. Gabrielle begins to protest but decides to let Xena tell her in her own time.
GABRIELLE
Okay, I'll trust you for now. Did you speak to Mekhi? Xena releases Gabrielle's hands. She stands and moves across the room to the table and sits in one of the chairs.
XENA
Yes. We had a very good talk. I certainly understand her much better now. Gabrielle smiles and gets up and walks over to the table and sits in a chair across from Xena.
GABRIELLE
You don't know how good it makes me feel that you two could come to an understanding.
XENA
Gabrielle, this battle tomorrow is going to be one of the bloodiest I've ever been in. I would like for you to stay with the wounded, behind the front. Gabrielle smirks.
GABRIELLE
What is it with you two? Xena looks confused.
XENA
What do you mean?
GABRIELLE
So it was a good enough talk that you and Mekhi are conspiring against me? Xena smiles and looks cockily at Gabrielle.
XENA
That's what you wanted wasn't it? For us to get along and agree on things. Gabrielle joins in on Xena's humor.
GABRIELLE
I'll tell you what I told her. I will follow the advance, but if I feel I am needed, I will fight.
XENA
Thanks.
Xena rises from the chair and stretches and yawns. GABRIELLE
Tired?
XENA
Yea, I think I'm going to turn in. Tomorrow is going to be a long day. Xena starts to walk toward the tent flap. Gabrielle rises and looks after her. She wants Xena to stay. Xena is nearly at the flap when she turns back to Gabrielle. Xena and Gabrielle speak at the same time.
GABRIELLE
Xena.
XENA
Gabrielle. They smile at one another. Xena walks back toward the inside of the tent. Without saying another word, Xena knows Gabrielle wants her to stay, and Gabrielle knows Xena wants to stay as well.
All the foot soldiers and mounted warriors are in straight military lines. They are ready for the advance. Zahar is mounted. Xena stands by Gabrielle, holding Argo's reins. The katana is strapped to her back. Gabrielle is standing, holding Aurum. They all three wait on the front line. Aurum has no saddle, just a leather thong around his lower jaw. He has coup stripes painted up his front legs and lightning bolts down his back legs. On his right shoulder is the Christian fish.
From the back of the columns a cheer rises from the men. Mekhi walks through them to the front line. We see only her boots, and then all eyes move up toward her face. She has stripped down to a leather breach cloth and top. Her midriff is bare. Her body ripples with hard powerful muscles. Her sword is in its sheath across her back. She wears a dagger at her waist. Around her neck is a beaded necklace. At its center is a lock of blonde hair. Her upper arms have tribal tattoos that encircle the bicep. She wears gauntlets around her wrist. Her appearance is formidable. Power and strength exude from her. The men are shouting and are pumped. They are ready to follow Mekhi anywhere.
Xena can't help but be impressed with her appearance. Gabrielle is taken back by Mekhi's appearance. In some Gabrielle looks at Xena, but Xena's eyes are transfixed on Mekhi. Gabrielle glances at Zahar. In his eyes Gabrielle sees great pride and love. Mekhi reaches the front of the line and walks to Gabrielle and Aurum. Gabrielle starts to speak but can't find the words. Mekhi looks into her eyes and smiles.
MEKHI
It's still me, Gabrielle. Gabrielle hands Mekhi the leather thong. Gabrielle finds her voice.
GABRIELLE
Zahar was right. You are something to see. Mekhi turns to mount Aurum. Xena who has been watching the exchange between Gabrielle and Mekhi. Looks at Mekhi.
XENA
Mekhi. Mekhi hesitates in mounting Aurum. Xena steps closer to Mekhi.
MEKHI
Yes, Xena.
XENA
Mekhi, I want to thank you for last night. I would also like to call you my friend. Mekhi is surprised and very pleased. Gabrielle smiles at both of them.
MEKHI
It would be my honor. Xena extends her hand and forearm. Mekhi and Xena clasp each other's arms at the elbow and look briefly into each other's eyes. Mekhi turns back to Aurum but hesitates again and looks at Gabrielle.
MEKHI
Gabrielle, your love is my strength. I carry it with me. Before Gabrielle can respond, Mekhi effortlessly swings onto Aurum's back. The men on seeing her mount raise their voice to a deafening level. Xena quickly hugs Gabrielle.
XENA
I... I'll see you soon. Gabrielle and Xena look into each other's eyes.
GABRIELLE
Yes, soon. Watch over her for me, Xena. Xena mounts Argo and looks down at Gabrielle.
XENA
Count on it. Gabrielle moves out of the way of the columns. Xena joins Mekhi and Zahar at the front. Mekhi whips Aurum around to face the men. She unsheathes her sword and raises it above her head. She shouts out to the men.
MEKHI
Let not your hearts be troubled, nor let them be afraid. With that she turns Aurum and with a yell Xena, Zahar, and Mekhi lead the charge into the valley.
Bodies of dead and dying men lie everywhere. Wagons are overturned and burning. Men are fighting hand to hand, with swords and spears. Catapults fire from both ends of the valley. Their missiles carry pottery filled with pitch. The pitch is ignited by a hail of flaming arrows that follows each volley of the catapults. A layer of smoke covers the valley floor. Xena and Mekhi fight their way through the carnage. Both leave a bloody trail of dead and dying men behind them. They don't move unhindered, both receive occasional blows that leave them bleeding and bruised. Together they are a killing machine. They fight with ruthless determination. Their goal lies at the end of the valley and nothing will stop them from reaching it. An arrow aimed for Mekhi's heart is caught by Xena just before it finds its mark. At the exact same time Mekhi catches an arrow heading for Xena's heart. They look at one another and smile.
XENA
Man, we're good.
MEKHI Aren't we. Realizing that a shower of arrows are headed their way, Xena and Mekhi both jump behind an overturned wagon to avoid them. Mekhi is struck in the upper shoulder and Xena in the thigh. They lean against the wagon and both grimace in pain.
MEKHI
I hate it when that happens.
XENA
Me, too. I'll push yours through if you'll push mine.
MEKHI
Deal.
Xena breaks off the feathered end of the arrow protruding from Mekhi's shoulder and then pushes it through and out.
XENA
Well, we aren't getting to the temple sitting here.
MEKHI
You're right. Let's go. They both rise and run head long into the battle. Once again they leave the Destroyer's men in their wake. Xena and Mekhi are not separated by much distance as they fight. They seem to be staying close to one another unconsciously. INTERCUT - GABRIELLE'S POSITION ON THE BATTLE FIELD Gabrielle is at the back of the advance. She is stopping to give directions to the men in charge of the wounded. She is occasionally attacked by an enemy soldier. She exhibits her fighting skill. The men of Mekhi's army also love Gabrielle. When she stops to check on some of them that are wounded, even in their pain they smile and are glad to see her. She is moved by their devotion. Gabrielle is bent over applying a tourniquet to a soldier's leg. She gets an eerie feeling. One of those hair standing up on the back of her neck kind of feelings. She looks up and sitting within just a few feet of her is the dark fox. Gabrielle jumps to her feet, but before she can make a move, the fox morphs into the Destroyer and has her by her throat.
THE DESTROYER
Now lets have some fun. Shall we, Gabrielle? Some of the soldiers that were standing in the area see the Destroyer grab Gabrielle. They run to defend her. The Destroyer kills them all with a wave of his hand. Their skin peels away and they burst into flames. One soldier is somehow spared. He watches as the Destroyer and Gabrielle vanish into thin air.
BACK TO SCENE Xena and Mekhi are fighting off individual soldiers when together they see a swirl of fire. The fire looks like a spiral staircase. They both dispatch the enemy and stand their ground as the spiral of fire approaches them. The fire stops and hovers several feet in front of them. Xena and Mekhi begin to see something within the flames. At first, neither of them can make out who or what it is. Then suddenly Xena and Mekhi can see Gabrielle clearly in the flame. Gabrielle is terrified. She calls out to Xena and Mekhi.
GABRIELLE
Xena, Mekhi, help me. Help me. I can't go through this again. Please. . . Xena and Mekhi attack the flame together only to be thrown back like rag dolls. They both land on their backs and look up in time to see the flame and Gabrielle disappear. Xena and Mekhi get to their feet. Xena yells after the flame.
XENA
Enough, you bastard. Enough. . . Mekhi reaches out and touches Xena's arm. Xena comes back into focus.
MEKHI
Xena, trust me. You will kill him and God will protect Gabrielle. Xena and Mekhi move back into the battle.
Gabrielle is lying chained on the altar. Behind her the flame of Dahak rises out of the pit. The temple doors burst open and Xena and Mekhi enter, looking for a fight. With them are several of Mekhi's men and Zahar. Xena and Mekhi are both bloody and near exhaustion. Both have several gashes and arrow wounds. They bleed from the mouth and nose. Blood runs down the side of both their faces. Xena is now carrying the katana. Once inside the temple, the doors slam behind them. Gabrielle turns her head and sees them. She calls to them.
GABRIELLE
Xena, Mekhi. . . Xena and Mekhi wait, knowing there is some kind of trap. Suddenly from the pit of fire small spirals of fire begin to rise and float around the room. When the room is filled with the spirals of fire, they stop moving momentarily and together they turn into a force of demons. They are somewhat human in form, but their faces resemble those of the Egyptian crocodile god Sobek. They carry swords, cross bows, and spears and immediately attack Xena, Mekhi, Zahar, and the soldiers. The battle is horrific. As Mekhi holds back several of the demons, Xena throws her chakram at the Destroyer, causing him to disappear to avoid being hit. This gives Xena time to catch the chakram and use it to release Gabrielle. The Destroyer reappears and is enraged that Gabrielle has been released. He throws balls of fire at Xena and Gabrielle. They are able to avoid them by getting behind pillars. In his rage he strikes some of his own elite force and kills them. He decides to let his demons work at killing Xena, Gabrielle, and Mekhi.
Xena, Gabrielle, Mekhi, Zahar, and the soldiers are fighting with all they have. Some of Mekhi's men have been killed and are lying on the temple floor. The demons that have been slain lie mixed in with the soldiers.
Mekhi and Xena are rushed by several of the demons at once. The Destroyer sees his chance. He sends out a spiral of fire and catches Gabrielle by the ankle and knocks her down and begins to drag her toward the altar. Gabrielle screams out to Xena.
GABRIELLE
Xena! Xena and Mekhi both look to Gabrielle. They begin to fight with everything they have. As Gabrielle is being pulled toward the altar, she is looking back at Xena and Mekhi. Xena and Mekhi are several feet from each other fighting off several of the demons. They have lost where each other are located. Xena feels one of the demons attacking from behind her. She twirls her sword, and as she is driving the blade back to impale the attacker, Mekhi is kicked into the demon and knocks him out of the way. Xena's blade is driven through Mekhi's heart. Xena turns to pull the blade out of what she thinks is a demon. Gabrielle is screaming.
GABRIELLE
Xena! No! No! Xena turns, seeing her blade has pierced Mekhi's heart. Mekhi is sinking to the floor. Zahar and the other men drive the demons back. Xena pulls the katana from Mekhi's chest and holds her as she collapses. The Destroyer can't believe his eyes and begins to laugh. This causes him to release his hold on Gabrielle. Gabrielle jumps to her feet and runs to Mekhi. Xena places her in Gabrielle's arms. Xena has tears in her eyes. Gabrielle is crying. Mekhi is gasping for breath. Mekhi looks at Gabrielle and then at Xena.
XENA
Mekhi, I thought, I thought . . . Mekhi reaches out and takes Xena's arm.
Mekhi
Xena, I don't have much time. You have to listen to me. Take the katana with my blood and destroy him. Do it now, my friend. Xena hesitates for only a second and looks one last time into Mekhi's eyes. She rises slowly from the floor and faces the Destroyer.
THE DESTROYER
Thank you, Xena, for your help. Now it is only you and me. Xena yells and attacks. The Destroyer throws balls of fire, and Xena uses the blade of the katana and her chakram to deflect them. The Destroyer has to pull his sword. They fight. INTERCUT - GABRIELLE and MEKHI The battle rages behind Gabrielle and Mekhi. Mekhi is dying and Gabrielle is holding her in her arms. Gabrielle takes one of her hands and brushes Mekhi's hair from her face. She then caresses Mekhi's face.
GABRIELLE
Don't go. You know you'll break my heart. Mekhi is struggling to control her breathing so she can talk to Gabrielle. Tears begin to well in her eyes.
MEKHI
I have never denied you anything, please don't ask me for what I cannot give you now. Gabrielle is trying not to sob. She controls herself and smiles lovingly into Mekhi's eyes.
GABRIELLE
Okay, then I will ask you for something you owe me. . . A kiss. Mekhi smiles through her pain and struggles to breath. Gabrielle leans down and for a brief moment their lips touch in a tender kiss. Gabrielle raises her head to look one last time into Mekhi's eyes. Mekhi looks at Gabrielle and one tear falls from Mekhi's eye. Mekhi has only enough strength to whisper her dying words.
MEKHI
Love is on the way, Gabrielle. Mekhi's eyes close and she is dead. Gabrielle looks at Mekhi with a face that is trying to place something but can't quite remember. Gabrielle drops her face against Mekhi's and cries. She kisses Mekhi's face and forehead. END INTERCUT BACK TO SCENE
Xena has never been so exhausted and near the end of her strength. The Destroyer gets his hand on her throat and throws her across the room. Xena holds on to the katana. The Destroyer hits Xena with several of his balls of fire pounding the strength she has left out of her. The Destroyer knocks Gabrielle across the room to the altar. She is dazed and not moving. The Destroyer walks across the room and picks her up and puts her on the altar. He looks for his dagger and sees it lying on the floor. He picks it up and moves to the altar and stands over Gabrielle. Xena is lying on the floor, her strength spent, she knows she doesn't have the strength to save Gabrielle alone. She looks to the sky and prays.
XENA
Please, God, I cannot do this alone. Please help me. As soon as the prayer leaves Xena's lips, she feels a surge of energy as though she has been reborn with a new will. She rises off the floor and grabs her chakram up from the floor. The Destroyer raises the dagger above Gabrielle and calls to Dahak.
THE DESTROYER
Father, the door to this world is open to you. As the dagger begins to fall toward Gabrielle, the chakram knocks it out of the Destroyer's hand. As he turns to face Xena, she is upon him and drives the katana through his heart. He staggers away from the altar and drops to the floor. He begins to disintegrate. Xena lifts Gabrielle off the altar. She is regaining consciousness. As the Destroyer continues to disintegrate, Xena and Gabrielle watch in horror as he morphs into a dark fox. The fox turns and faces Xena and Gabrielle. The fox crouches and snarls. The fox has nine tails and whips them back and forth as he approaches Xena and Gabrielle.
Zahar and his men have defeated the remainder of the demons and are watching the fox's approach on Xena and Gabrielle. The foxes separate from one another momentarily and swish their tails back and forth. They again attack. Again the battle between them is brutal. The silver fox finally gets the dark fox by the throat and kills it.
The silver fox turns to Gabrielle and looks into her eyes. As it does, one of the fallen demons picks up a cross bow and fires an arrow. It strikes the silver fox in the side. The fox drops to the ground. Zahar immediately picks up the katana from where the Destroyer's body was and uses it to cut off all of the fox's tails but one. The tails turn into swirls of colored light that enter the fox's body. The dark fox disappears, and as he does, Dahak's flame behind the altar explodes and then is extinguished. The silver fox flinches with each swirl of light that enters its body. When the last one enters, the fox's silver hair coat turns to red. The fox rises to its feet and again turns toward Gabrielle. Gabrielle and Xena are staring at the fox. The fox moves across the floor to Gabrielle and gently licks her hand. It then turns and the temple doors open. The fox runs from the temple.
Zahar follows the fox out the doors and sits on the steps.
Gabrielle and Xena walk from the temple and down the steps. Gabrielle sits on the step just below Zahar so she can look up into his face. Xena walks down several and turns to face them both.
GABRIELLE
Zahar, what just happened in there. What is going on? Where is Mekhi's body? Zahar lifts his head. A few tears remain on his face. He looks back toward the valley, then at Gabrielle.
ZAHAR
Gabrielle, do you know what a kitsune is?
GABRIELLE
No. Zahar looks at Xena.
XENA
When I was in Chin, Lao Ma told me about them. The kitsune are foxes that have magical powers. I thought they were just a myth. Zahar and Gabrielle are looking at Xena as she speaks and then back to each other.
ZAHAR
You're right, except they are not myths. They exist. The oldest and most powerful kitsune are spirits but not immortal. They can live to be 900 years old before they return to the spirit world or die. With every hundred years they live they gain a tail.
XENA
I remember now. A kitsune's strength of magic depends on the number of tails it has. Zahar is now looking at Xena.
ZAHAR
Precisely. The Destroyer was a nine-tailed kitsune. Mekhi knew we would first have to destroy his mortal form and then his fox form. Xena sits on the steps and turns toward Zahar and Gabrielle.
GABRIELLE
So that's where Xena came in. Xena kills the mortal form of the Destroyer, but what about Mekhi? Xena looks from Zahar to Gabrielle. Realization crosses her face.
XENA
Mekhi, she was the other kitsune and that is why her body is gone. Gabrielle and Xena are now both looking at Zahar.
ZAHAR
Yes, Xena. Gabrielle's fox and the silver fox are one and the same.
Gabrielle is shocked. She shakes her head trying to comprehend. Zahar reaches out and takes Gabrielle's hand.
ZAHAR
She loved you, Gabrielle. Kitsune can manifest themselves into any form. She was always watching over you. She was a celestial kitsune. These kitsune are protective and noble. These kitsune believe they must guard all under their domain. The Destroyer was a Bakemone kitsune which are very evil. Tears begin to well up in Gabrielle's eyes. Xena and Zahar look at one another again. Xena still looks confused.
ZAHAR
You see, Xena, Mekhi and the Destroyer both being nine tailed kitsune would have had equal power in their fox forms. Mekhi needed an advantage. God told her the only way to weaken the Destroyer would be to introduce goodness into his black evil heart. God chose Mekhi. Mekhi chose you. The katana had to be bathed in the blood of goodness, Mekhi's blood. Then the blade with Mekhi's blood had to be driven through the heart of the Destroyer. When Mekhi's blood entered his heart it began to eat away at the darkness. This weakened the Destroyer enough to give Mekhi the advantage in their fox forms. Xena looks at Gabrielle and Gabrielle looks back at Xena. Gabrielle then looks at Zahar.
GABRIELLE
Why did you cut off her tails? Zahar looks down.
ZAHAR
When a kitsune is wounded they can sacrifice their tails for an influx of chi. I thought I might save her, but the wound was mortal to her fox form. She is now just a fox that will live a normal fox's life span. Gabrielle gets up from the step and looks at Xena. Xena sees desperation in Gabrielle.
GABRIELLE
Xena, you're the best tracker I know. We have to find her. Xena looks into Gabrielle's eyes. She takes her arm.
XENA
Gabrielle, Zahar is trying to tell you the fox that left the temple is just . . .a fox.
GABRIELLE
But maybe, maybe she . . . Gabrielle looks into Xena's eyes and then to Zahar. They both look back at her sympathetically. Gabrielle goes to Xena, and Xena takes her in her arms. Gabrielle cries softly. Xena makes Gabrielle sit on the step. Xena continues to keep her arm around her, and Gabrielle rests her head on Xena's chest. Zahar rises and moves in front of Gabrielle and Xena. Zahar has the katana in the black saya in his hand. The handle has a black leather braid. Hanging from the handle is a small leather thong with a Christian fish hanging from it.
ZAHAR
Gabrielle, remember in the hall when we talked, I told you you would never have to choose. Gabrielle lifts her head from Xena's chest and stops crying.
GABRIELLE
Yes.
ZAHAR
I told you because I knew Mekhi would die. Gabrielle looks as though she might cry again but controls herself. Xena is looking from Gabrielle to Zahar and squeezes Gabrielle's shoulders.
ZAHAR
She told me after she had spoken with God that night she was camping. From that moment she planned for your happiness. Gabrielle looks more intently at Zahar.
GABRIELLE
What do you mean? Zahar smiles down at Gabrielle.
ZAHAR
God gave her, her choice of warriors. She chose Xena for two reasons. One. She knew Xena would do what she had to do even after killing Mekhi. (MORE)
ZAHAR (Cont'd) Two, and this is the most important reason because she wanted you to have love. She knew Xena loved you as much as she loved you. She also left you and Xena a gift. Gabrielle looks at the katana in Zahar's hand then back to Zahar's face. Zahar hands the katana to Gabrielle. Gabrielle looks at it and then to Xena and then back to Zahar.
GABRIELLE
She left me a sword. Why? She never wanted me to be a warrior. Zahar kneels before Gabrielle and takes one of her hands and turns it palm up. Zahar then reaches inside his belt and pulls out a chain. As he lowers the chain into Gabrielle's palm, we see a Christian fish on the end of it. Gabrielle picks it up to see the fish clearly. Gabrielle's eyes widen with the realization of where she first saw this necklace.
ZAHAR
Yes, Gabrielle, Tenko means celestial fox. Kitsune have all kinds of magic. One of these is the ability to create themselves in any form. When they take a form, they become in every way what that form is in life. The katana is for your son which you will have in the spring. Your child is her gift to you. Xena is shocked. Gabrielle just stares at Zahar not really comprehending for a moment. Tears begin to fall down her face.
XENA
Gabrielle is pregnant? She's going to have a baby? Zahar smiles at Xena.
ZAHAR
Yes, Xena, and it will be a strong healthy boy. This child is also a gift for you. Mekhi made sure it would be a boy so you could have the experience of raising a son. She knew you always regretted not being with your son and hoped you would love this child as your own. Xena and Gabrielle look at one another. Both have tears falling down their faces.
GABRIELLE
That's what she meant. When she said love was on the way. Love was a child.
XENA
Mekhi, you were. . . .truly my friend. Zahar gets to his feet and looks down at Xena and Gabrielle.
ZAHAR
I'm going down to help the men. We will gather the wounded and make funeral pyres for the dead. Tomorrow we go home. I'll see you both in camp. Gabrielle looks down at her stomach and lays her palm on her bare skin. Leaving her palm resting on her stomach, she looks into Xena's eyes. Xena looks down and places her hand on top of Gabrielle's and then back into Gabrielle's eyes. They smile and rest their heads together for a moment. Xena then lifts her head and looks out toward the valley.
XENA
Mekhi. You sly fox. You wanted to make sure I made the right decision. Gabrielle looks at Xena with a puzzled expression.
GABRIELLE
What are you talking about, Xena?
XENA
Nothing, Gabrielle, nothing at all. Xena smiles and hugs Gabrielle tightly.
Xena and Gabrielle are walking and leading their horses. Gabrielle is obviously pregnant. They walk up over a hill. Below them are smaller hills and at the bottom of these they can see Potidaea.
GABRIELLE
We're home, Xena. Xena smiles at Gabrielle and looks down at Gabrielle's expanding stomach.
XENA
Thank goodness, maybe with Lila, Sarah, Eve, and Virgil around I can get a break from all these cravings and moods.
Gabrielle looks at Xena with a smirk and then they both laugh.
GABRIELLE
Where do you think Aurum is off to? He usually comes back to me after just a little while. Xena stops and so does Gabrielle. Xena whistles and they both look around expectantly.
XENA
Let's hope he isn't out spreading himself around. Xena jerks her head toward Argo and Gabrielle's mare and smirks.
XENA
By the looks of those two you aren't the only one expecting. Xena and Gabrielle laugh. Gabrielle's laugh fades into a smile. She is remembering.
GABRIELLE
I miss Mekhi, Xena.
XENA
I know. Gabrielle is looking out toward the hills. Xena is still watching her face. Gabrielle's expression suddenly changes to one of disbelief. Xena turns to see what she is looking at. Aurum is running down one of the other hillsides. On his back is Mekhi dressed in her normal attire with her cape flowing back behind her.
GABRIELLE
It would be like her to make sure Xena puts her hand on Gabrielle's shoulder and squeezes it gently.
XENA
Yes, it would. Gabrielle and Xena look at one another and start down the hill toward Potidaea.
GABRIELLE
Let's go home. As they reach the bottom of the hill we see three women and one man running out to meet them. They hug and kiss. We look back up the hill and see a fox as it tops the hill. It sits and watches.
