Chapter 2
"Spanky!" Allison Kenny yelled as she entered the office. "Put the phone down and grab your coat."
Sylvie held up her hand and turned away from her friend. Allie stopped for a moment, stunned that she had been silenced so easily. Shaking her head she grabbed Sylvie's briefcase and walked over to her desk. Sylvie just turned her back to Allie and kept talking. Grinning, Allie opened the briefcase and shoved everything that was on the desk into it.
"Allie! What the fuck?" Sylvie snarled, covering the receiver.
"You aren't getting out of this. You promised her, and now you'll make good on that promise." Allie said, giving her friend a cold look.
Sylvie rolled her eyes and went back to her call. "I'm afraid I have to let you go, Mr. Lalonde. I'll have an appointment set up for us to meet later in the week. Yes. Thank you."
Allie grinned triumphantly as Sylvie hung up the phone.
"You've got balls, my friend." Sylvie smiled, closing the overflowing briefcase.
"You should know that your stare doesn't intimidate me, Spanky." Allie smirked.
"Why does she want me there anyway? She knows I don't give a rat's ass about soccer." Sylvie groaned.
"She wants you there because you're her family and it's her first big college game."
"Yeah, but hell, she's playing with half her frigging high school team, and I saw a few of those games." Sylvie grumbled as Allie led them out of the office.
"One; you saw one game, and I dragged you to that one too." Allie laughed, shaking her head.
"I didn't have to pay fifty bucks to go see it, either."
"You didn't pay. I bought the tickets, so quit whining." Allie said, slapping her friend's shoulder. "Besides, don't you want to see her? She hasn't been home since Easter."
"Yeah, I want to see her." Sylvie mumbled. "I'd rather just see her though, not have to sit through some stupid game. And you know that idiot friend of hers will want to tag along if we go anywhere. I can't stand that girl. The way she looks at Misha is unsettling."
Allie raised an eyebrow, surprised that Sylvie had noticed anything strange about Kendra and Misha's friendship. She would have to warn Misha to be careful. Sylvie had tolerated her participation in sports and her decision to pursue a teaching career, but if she found out Misha was gay she would lose her mind. Sylvie had control of Misha' trust fund until the girl turned 21, and could cut her off financially. Allie hoped Sylvie wouldn't resort to that kind of blackmail, but knowing what a homophobe her friend was, she couldn't completely rule it out. Deciding that silence was the best option, she led Sylvie out to her car.
"We're taking the matchbox?" Sylvie groaned looking at Allie's Audi.
"Come on Sylvie, its better on gas and faster than the tank you drive." Allie said opening the doors.
"It's a fucking purse on wheels." Sylvie grumbled, tossing her briefcase into the backseat.
"Well, look at it this way. Kendra is a really big girl; if she insists on joining us, she'll be uncomfortable the entire ride." Allie gave her a knowing wink.
Sylvie smiled at the visual of the tall goalkeeper hunched over in the back of the coupe. Then an image of how close the big girl would be to her sister took over, and her mood darkened. Misha was worrying her. The girl wouldn't talk to her about any of the events of the past summer. There were only two people she confided in, Kendra and Allie.
"How's she doing anyway?" Sylvie asked her friend.
"Pretty good; her grades are really good and she thinks she's in the best shape of her life. She seems very excited to be a starter, especially since she's just a freshman."
Sylvie gave Allie a concerned look.
"She's in therapy, Spanky. She's doing okay, but she has a lot to deal with. She blames herself for all of it, ya know."
"That's just stupid." Sylvie grunted. "None of it was her fault. She should blame that selfish prick for all of it."
Allie shook her head.
You should feel lucky she doesn't blame you.
They were quiet for a long time, finally Sylvie sighed. Allie looked over at her friend.
"Do you think therapy is helping her?"
Allie smiled. "Yeah, I do."
Sylvie seemed satisfied with that answer. Allie turned her attention to navigating her way towards Montreal.

"Excellent pass kid," the captain messed Misha' unruly curls.
"Thanks Cap," she grinned.
The locker room was loud and boisterous after the win. It was the first game and win of the season. Misha's pass led to the only goal of the game, so she was especially happy. She was so glad that her sister and Allie got to see it. She had looked up a few times from the field, stunned that her sister actually came. Unbelievably, Allie had managed to get Sylvie away from the company long enough to eat and go see a soccer game. She was looking forward to visiting with them.
"You coming over tonight?" Kendra asked, sitting down beside her.
"Yeah. After dinner with Allie and Sylvie." Misha grinned. "You sure you don't wanna come?"
Kendra grinned. "No, you haven't seen them in a while. I've got a paper due, and I suppose I could actually try and work on it."
"Goof." Misha said, swatting her midsection playfully. "I'll be over before curfew."
"You better." Kendra said giving her a wink. "I've got the room all to myself for once."
"Hold that thought." Misha smirked.
Ken got up and walked back towards her locker. Feeling Misha' eyes on her, she put a bit more strut into her walk than usual. Misha watched her powerful lover walk away; the tall woman's muscles played across her back as she moved. Misha could spend a whole day just watching Kendra walk. It was intoxicating.
Misha shook her head and groaned. She was excited to see her sister and Allie, but really wanted some alone time with Kendra. They had only recently rekindled their physical relationship. She was still healing emotionally from the rape, and Kendra was a huge support. The goalkeeper had been her rock, never pushing or getting frustrated. When Misha was finally ready, Ken had been terrified. She didn't want to hurt Misha, or scare her, so she talked the entire time. Just saying what she was going to do before she did it, giving Misha plenty of time to object. That ended up being the thing that kept the memories at bay. The deep silky sound of Kendra's voice made Misha feel safe and loved.
"Hit the showers kid, or your sister won't let you in the tank because you stink." Kendra said, walking back to her and nudging her leg. "I'll see you tonight."
Misha grinned. She wished she could just stand up and give Ken a kiss right there in the middle of the locker room. She settled for a wink.
"That you will." She flirted.
Ken grinned and walked out of the locker room.

Misha looked around the restaurant and smirked to herself. There was no way Sylvie picked this restaurant. There was no wine list, no snotty Maitre'd, no reporters or politicians - just families and a few groups of college kids. She was fairly certain that even when Sylvie had gone to college she would never have eaten at an establishment like this. It was far too common for someone like her sister. She couldn't believe Allie had even gotten her in the door. As soon as they sat down, Sylvie excused herself and went outside to use her cell. Misha assumed she was using all her clout to get them into one of the fine dining establishments in town.
Allie sipped on a beer and watched Misha. This was her opportunity to warn Misha that Sylvie was starting to wonder about her relationship with Kendra. She picked this restaurant knowing Sylvie would be disgusted and leave to arrange a better dining option for them. It would be her only chance to talk to Misha alone. The only problem was, Misha had no idea that she knew about Kendra.
"Misha," Allie said, finally mustering up the courage to speak, "Sylvie is becoming concerned with your relationship with Kendra."
Misha paled visibly. "What?"
"Misha I know… and I'm happy for you, but Sylvie won't be quite as understanding." Allie said as kindly as she could.
"How? Why?" Misha blinked a few times. "How do you know?"
That was the sticky little question now wasn't it?
"I have eyes. I can see how much you both care for each other. I really am happy for you kiddo, she seems like a very nice girl." Allie smiled at her.
"What happened…? Why does Sylvie think…? You didn't tell her did you?" Misha looked like she was going to pass out.
"No. I would never do that to you. Someday if you decide to tell her yourself I'll stand by you, but I'd never betray your trust." Allie said, terrified she was setting herself up.
To her relief and guilt, the teen was so worried about Sylvie's reaction that she didn't really care how Allie found out.
"She can't know, Allie." Misha said softly. "She'll disown me."
Allie winced because she knew it was true.
"She's the only family I have left." Misha said, looking at the table.
Allie's heart was breaking for the girl. "Don't worry, Misha. It's fixable. Just don't mention Kendra every five minutes. And I don't know - try going out on a date with a guy, just to ease her mind."
Misha froze and her eyes filled with a cold fury. "I'll try to keep my mentions of Ken down, but I'll never date a guy. I couldn't betray her just to keep Sylvie off my back. I can't believe you would want me to sell my relationship - or Hell, even myself out like that."
"You're right." Allie smiled proudly at the girl. "You are absolutely right. Forget I mentioned it."
Misha just gave her a cool look.
Allie almost laughed. "You are so much like your sister sometimes it scares me."
"I'm not a homophobic, snobbish, workaholic who values power and prestige over people's lives." Misha said bitterly.
Allie was thrown by the cruelty in Misha' voice. "No, but you are stubborn, loyal and short tempered. Those were the attributes I was thinking of."
Misha snorted.
"What's going on Misha? I thought you wanted to see Sylvie?" Allie asked, wondering where all this hostility was coming from.
Misha looked at the tabletop. "I want to see her. I miss her. She's my only family."
"But?" Allie prodded.
"She…" Misha sighed and shrugged her shoulders. "She can be hard to take sometimes."
Allie couldn't have argued with that, even if Sylvie hadn't arrived right then.
"I have arranged reservations at 10 pm at Toque. We can leave this establishment and await a proper dining experience." she said, looking them smugly.
Misha groaned. 10 pm reservations meant she wouldn't be able to meet Kendra. Not to mention she was starving.
"Can't we just eat here, Sylvie?" Misha asked.
"Are you insane?" Sylvie said, refusing to even take her seat.
"What's the big deal, Spanky? We eat here now instead of waiting for 3 hours to eat." Allie tried to help Misha out.
"No, I will not eat here." She said stepping away from the table. "In fact, I'm leaving right now."
"Fine." Misha growled.
"She doesn't have the keys to my car; she isn't going anywhere." Allie winked, holding up her keys.
Sylvie rolled her eyes and was about to snatch the keys from her friend when Misha spoke.
"No, I really don't care if she leaves. I haven't eaten since lunch, and I burned about a thousand calories. I'm starved. If she thinks I'm waiting another three hours to eat because she won't dare sit in a restaurant that doesn't bow to her every whim, she's insane." Misha said, picking up the menu.
"Misha!" Allie was shocked.
"How dare you talk to me like that?" Sylvie glared at her sister.
"I'm hungry. I'm tired, and God forbid I actually wanted to spend some time talking to my sister. Instead I've sat here while you had a fit over nothing. If you didn't want to come visit, you shouldn't have. Just send Allie as your representative. At least she's interested in my life." Misha slammed the menu down.
The air around the table seemed to still as the two Martin women squared off. Allie could see the anger rising in Sylvie. No one, not even Misha, was allowed to talk to her that way. She didn't become the head of Martin Lumber by being a pushover. Misha should know that better than anyone. That thought shook her, and she quickly looked at Misha. The cold, bitter look she was giving her sister scared Allie. Perhaps the past was finally going to catch up to Sylvie.
"Misha." Sylvie's voice filled with barely controlled rage. "As egotistical and snobbish as I may be, I am still financing your little foray into higher learning. Perhaps you should remember that next time you want to cause a scene."
Allie groaned and closed her eyes. Sylvie must be really angry to threaten her education.
"Allison, I'll be waiting at your car. I believe I would like to go home now." Sylvie said, turning and leaving the restaurant with her head held high.
Allie watched her walk away, the brisk clip of her heels echoing in the now silent eatery. Allie slouched in her chair and took one last, long drink from her beer. She glanced at Misha, who looked to be both hurt and furious at the same time.
"That went well." Allie said, shaking her head.
"Sorry Allie." Misha wiped her eyes.
"Where…" Allie took a deep breath. "Why? Was it because of what I said about Kendra? Is that why you got so angry with her?"
Misha shrugged.
"Goddammit Misha, I want an answer." Allie was angry. "I'm the one who's going to be stuck in a car with her for 2 hours."
Misha looked at Allie and curled her lip. "Oh, poor you."
Allie counted to ten and tried to remember her sullen, late teen years. "Misha. Please why?"
"I don't know Allie." Misha said, looking at the table. "One minute I can't wait to see her, and the next I'm so angry I could gouge her eyes out. What you told me about Ken only made me realize I'm gonna lose her anyway. Why should I let her win? Why can't I get a few shots in?"
Allie stood, putting some money on the table for her beer. "Because you're the better person."
She walked over and kissed Misha on the head. "I left enough for you to get something to eat. Love you kid."
"I love you too Allie." Misha smiled sadly.
~~~
Allie unlocked the doors to the Audi and disengaged the alarm. Sylvie ripped the door open and slammed it shut after climbing in. Allie sighed and climbed into the driver's side. She started the car and pulled out of her parking spot. The drive was silent but full of tension for the first twenty minutes. Then she could see some of the anger leaving Sylvie's face, and knew the yelling would start. When the eldest Martin was very angry she spoke very few words, but the chilling effect of those words made most people quiver in fear. The fact that Misha boldly stood up to her, in full ice bitch mode, infuriated the executive more.
"Can you believe the audacity of that ingrate?" Sylvie finally managed to spit out, as they reached the city limits.
Allie merely raised her eyebrows.
"She's never acted like that before. It must be that Kendra girl's influence. I'll be putting a stop to that this summer. Misha will be back home, and I'll keep that big bruising dyke away from my sister." Sylvie was ranting now. "I'll put her to work at the company; keep her too busy to worry about her friends. Maybe I'll put her in the yard. That should keep her mentally and physically tired."
Allie almost swerved off the road. "What?"
"You heard me." Sylvie snarled.
"You can't be serious."
"Theo loved working in the yard. It was good for him. Father said it made him a man." Sylvie growled.
"You cannot possibly be this stupid." Allie said shaking her head.
"What the hell are you talking about?" Sylvie spat back at her.
"She was attacked in that yard." Allie yelled at her friend.
"Well, it's time she got over it." Sylvie grumbled, knowing she was in the wrong but refusing to accept it.
As the fury rose in Allie, she pulled the car over so she wouldn't kill them both.
"Got over it!" Allie screamed. "She was held down and raped by three men. She'll never just 'get over it'."
"That's not what I meant." Sylvie said, rubbing her face with her hands. "You know that."
"Do I?" Allie asked sternly. "Sylvie, she went through a lot last year. The fact that she is a fully functioning young adult should have you dancing a jig. But no, you harp on all the things that bug you about her. Can't you just be happy that she's okay?"
"No." Sylvie said quietly. "She should be more than okay. She's a Martin. I went through a lot last year too. Do you think it was easy?"
Allie stared at her friend; stunned that Sylvie was actually feeling sorry for herself, after all that Misha went through. Allie turned away disgusted, and pulled back onto the highway. She didn't want Sylvie in her car anymore, in fact, looking at her made her skin crawl. Lost in her newfound repulsion, she almost missed Sylvie's quiet words.
"I see Tommy La Salle sodomizing her every night in my dreams, and I can't stop him."
Allie sighed and found a morsel of compassion for her old friend. She reached over and gave Sylvie's hand a gentle squeeze.
~~~
Kendra opened the door, surprised to see Misha so soon.
"What happened?" She asked, pulling her girlfriend into the room.
"Fight." Misha said wiping her eyes.
"Oh Misha." Ken said hugging her tight. "I'm so sorry. I know you were looking forward to seeing her."
"It was my fault Ken." Misha sniffed. "I was a bitch."
Ken laughed a little. "Oh baby, I'm sure you're imagining things."
Kendra had met Sylvie. If anyone was being a bitch, she would put money on the eldest Martin.
"Well Sylvie didn't like the restaurant we went to so she went outside and called Toque for reservations. She could only get in at ten tonight and well I was hungry, tired and I wanted to come see you."
Kendra blanched. "You didn't tell her that did you?"
"No, but I would have if Allie hadn't warned me against saying anything about you to Sylvie." Misha sighed. "She suspects something is going on between us."
Kendra closed her eyes and kept a tight hold on her girlfriend. She was terrified, having witnessed Sylvie Martin lose her temper before. The day Kendra found out about Misha' attack she confronted Sylvie, demanding to know how she could sleep at night, letting her sisters rapists roam free. Sylvie spun so quickly, she caught the tall athlete off guard and pinned her to the wall with her hand.
"
I think my brand of justice will be far more effective than any courts. Those men will pay dearly for what they did. And if you so much as breathe a word of what Misha told you to anyone, I will destroy you." Sylvie snarled.
Kendra shivered at the memory. "It's gonna be okay Misha. Everything will work out."
"I don't know she was pretty mad." Misha cried.
"She'll get over it." Kendra said kissing the top of her head. "She loves you."
Misha hoped that was true, but she wasn't really sure anymore.
"How about we go to bed?" Kendra smiled. "Then in the morning, you can call her and make up."
Misha nodded and followed her lover to bed. "You're sure your roommate is out for the night?"
"She went home for the weekend; it's her Grandmother's birthday." Kendra assured her. "C'mon, let's get you undressed and under the covers."
"Ken…" Misha looked away. "I don't think I can…"
"Oh baby, I just meant to sleep. I'll just cuddle with you, okay?" Kendra said, soothing Misha's frayed nerves.
Misha nodded and leaned up to kiss her. "I love you, Kendra."
Kendra smiled into the kiss. "Back at ya."
Misha got undressed to her bra and panties and crawled into the narrow dorm bed. Kendra turned the light off and crawled in behind her lover, pulling her tight. She might not be as rich and powerful as Sylvie Martin, but she could protect Misha better than the blonde bitch.
