Part 3

Xena slowly opened one eye, then the other and let out a groan.

"Well, well, well, finally some movement. I thought you'd be out for the whole day."

"Please Brie, don't shout." the warrior desperately pleaded.

"For your information warrior, I am not shouting. You are just suffering from an all mighty hangover."

"Remind me again why I was drinking."

"You and Eponin were celebrating our engagement. Do you remember the arrow contest and then me banning the two of you from drinking Amazon ale altogether?"

Xena pondered for a moment before replying. "Ah yes. That I do remember. I thank you from the bottom of my heart."

"Well you're lucky that the two of you didn't do more damage to yourselves. Honestly Xena, I don't know why the two of you do the things you do to yourselves."

"No-one else will let us do anything to them." she replied with a grin.

Gabrielle sighed. "Xena, you're too much." "Is there anything I can get you? I have to spend some time with Ephiny."

"No, I think I'll rest as much as I can. I have to petition the Amazon Council later if I'm not mistaken."

Gabrielle moved closer to Xena and kissed her lightly on the lips.

"I love you so much Xena and I know that pledging your allegiance to me is difficult."

"No, Brie, it's not. I'd do anything to bond with you. This is no sacrifice, believe me."

"I'll get Ruth to stay outside just in case you need me, okay?"

"Thanks Gabrielle." Xena whispered. "I love you."

Gabrielle smiled at her love. "And I love you. Now get some rest and I'll see you later."

Gabrielle gave Xena another kiss and then headed over to Ephiny's hut to met up with the Regent.

As usual, Ephiny was checking up on some scrolls.

"Hi Eph, did you check on Eponin this morning?"

"Morning Gabrielle. I most certainly did and she is like a bear with a sore head. Nearly took mine off when I went to see how she was. I have decided to give her a wide berth." Eph replied with a laugh.

"She still in bed then?"

"That's where I left her. I should really make her go out on patrol this morning. But I couldn't be that cruel. What about Xena?"

"Not feeling the best either. I hope I did the right thing by banning them from drinking any more ale."

"I don't know Gabrielle. You know what the two of them are like. I'm sure they'd go off somewhere and do it anyway. I think we might as well just face the fact that they are a dangerous pair when they're together, either sober or drunk."
The young Queen sighed, "I guess you're right. I suppose I'll give them a couple of days and then lift the ban. Now what's on the agenda today?"

"Only Xena's Petition to bond with you."

"Oh, be honest with me Eph, how hard will it be for her?"

"I can't see there being any problems. Everyone on the Council knows that Xena would give her life for you. She must pledge her allegiance to the Nation in front of the Council and you and then tomorrow, she will be taken to the purification hut for three days."

"Can I be here when she addresses the Council? The bard enquired.

"You can either attend or not, but you will be unable to speak directly to the Council. Either way, you will not be permitted to see Xena until after the purification."

"Oh, I see. I think I'd better attend. I don't like the thought of not seeing Xena, especially today."

"Well," Ephiny paused. "I wasn't sure when the best time was to bring this up, but once Xena goes through the purification ritual, you will have to sleep in separate quarters until the joining."

"What!?" Gabrielle questioned. "Ephiny, you can't be serious?"

"Um, well it's traditional Gabrielle. When two Amazons wish to join, they must be separated for a period of 7 days before and since you have decided that you wish to be joined under the next full moon, you will not have a chance to sleep next to her until after the bonding ceremony."

"You could have warned me earlier Eph," Gabrielle mumbled.

"I'm sorry Gabrielle, but I totally forgot about it all. I guess I was so excited when you told me the news. It didn't occur to me to tell you until now."

"That's okay Eph, I just wish I had of known earlier. I wanted to be there for Xena after she'd gone through the purification if you know what I mean." Gabrielle smirked.

Ephiny smiled back at the young bard. "I do know what you mean Gabrielle, but just think of what it will be like when the two of you come together after the joining. It'll make it all the more special." Ephiny made sure she put an emphasis on the word special.

"Mmm, you're absolutely right." Gabrielle replied.

"Alright then, I'm off to do some sparing before this afternoon's meeting. What are you going to do?"

"I might join you for a while, but then I think I need to talk to Eponin regarding Lila."

"I forgot about that. I take it there's romance in the air?" Ephiny teased.

"Yes, from Lila's point of view anyway. I had a long talk with her about everything and she is determined to get to know Eponin's better. I can't stop her as she's a grown woman, but I told her how I expect her to act now that she has been recognized as an Amazon Princess."

"Do you think Eponin's interested?"

"Your guess is as good as mine, Eph. I think Eponin is still in love with you though." Gabrielle replied.

Ephiny frowned a little. "You see it too then? I thought I might have been reading something that wasn't there. She says that she's not in love with me, and that she's happy for Solari and me. But I sometimes catch her watching me and I can see it. It's been 4 years since we were together. I just wish she would find someone to help her move on with her life."

"Well, hopefully that someone will be Lila." Gabrielle grinned. "As I said before, she's pretty determined to go after Eponin."

"Are you going to go see Eponin now?"

"I know what you're thinking Ephiny. But there's no time like the present and I'm sure Eponin won't be such a grouch to her Queen now, will she?"

Ephiny couldn't suppress a laugh. "If you think so. Be my guest. But don't say I didn't warn you."

"Okay, I'll consider myself warned."

With that she bid Ephiny goodbye and went to see Eponin.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The pounding in Eponin's head was keeping her from going back to sleep after Ephiny had visited earlier. 'She had yelled at her best friend, but hadn't really meant it. She still loved Ephiny. There, she'd admitted it. Why she couldn't just move on, she didn't know. She needed someone desperately in her life, but who was going to love a crusty old warrior such as herself. She smiled slightly and thought of the Queen's sister. She was young, pretty, but she was the Queen's sister. Then again, she had shown some interest in her. Oh, don't be so stupid Eponin, it's just wishful thinking on your part.'
Her musings were interrupted by a soft knocking on the door. Pulling herself from the pallet, she was surprised to see Gabrielle there.
"Good morning, my Queen. To what do I owe the honour?"
Gabrielle smiled and knew that Eponin realised that this was an official visit.
"I am fine Eponin. How are you doing?"
"Apart from wanting someone to bash my head in to stop if from pounding, pretty good I'd say."
Gabrielle let out a laugh. "Well I'm not here to do that for you, even though someone should punish you for what you did last night." Eponin went to speak, but Gabrielle held up her hand. "However, I'm sure you're suffering enough already and you've been banned from drinking any Amazon ale for a while, so that's punishment enough for the time being."
Eponin lowered her head. "Thank you, my Queen."
"Eponin, I am here today partially as your Queen and partially as your friend."
Now Eponin was confused.
Gabrielle continued. "I know that it's not something that you would normally discuss with me, but as Lila is my sister, I need to know what your intentions are towards her. If you are not interested in her, then I would suggest that you stop her advances right now before she gets hurt."
Eponin was unsure of how to respond.
"Eponin, far be it from telling you what to do, but can I offer you a little advice?" Eponin nodded. "It's time to move on. Ephiny is very happy with Solari. Pining for her will not get her back. Now back to my original question. What are your intentions towards my sister?"
"Um, well, I'm not sure." Eponin actually blushed.
"I can see that you're not comfortable talking about it Eponin. Just think about what I said, alright?"
"Alright, Gabrielle, I'll do that."
"Well, I'll leave you to it. I'm going to meet Lila now and then we're going to work on some staff practice."
"I thought I was going to train her?"
"You are, but I don't think you're quite up to it at the moment, are you?"
"Actually, I couldn't sleep, so I thought a good workout is what I need. Wait for me to change and I'll join you on the field."
"I have to go collect Lila first, so I'll meet you there."
After Gabrielle left, Eponin pondered. Was it time to move on and start a new relationship? Should that relationship be with Lila? Before she could stop herself a smile formed on her face. What is this? I'm a warrior, I don't daydream. Get a grip woman. You need to work out.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As the Royal Guard approached the Queen's hut, all she could think about was how to awaken the Warrior Princess and not be injured at the same time. She figured that she should try to keep the door between her and Xena at all times. With that in mind, she thumped loudly on the door and called out to Xena.

She heard a moan and then the door was flung open. There stood Xena in just her sleeping shift.

"This had better be good." Xena grumbled.

"Th-the Council members require your presence as soon as possible." Sara managed to say.

"Why on earth do they need to see me now for? I didn't think I was supposed to see them until after lunch."

"Um, I'm not sure Xena. I was just told to ask you to come before the Council."

"Alright." Xena sighed. "I'll be with you shortly." Xena replied before going to close the door.

"I will escort you there when you're ready."

She turned back to Sara and smirked. "I'm sure I can find my way on my own."

"Sorry Xena. I have my orders from the Regent and the Council. I must wait and escort you back."

"Fine, then. I'll get ready." Xena closed the door and was confused by the request that not only did she have to appear before the Council, but she had to be escorted as well. She didn't like this. No, she didn't like this at all.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Gabrielle was on the field showing Lila the finer points of how to wield a staff. Gabrielle glanced out of the corner of her eye and whispered to Lila.
"Here comes Eponin. Now remember what we talked about? Okay, you're on."
Lila twirled the staff around in her arms a lot like Gabrielle had when she first learnt the staff. Like her sister, she hit herself in the head with it.
"Ouch. That hurts." Lila threw the staff to the ground. "I don't think this is the best weapon for me to learn. I'm such a clod."
Eponin heard that. "No you're not Lila. You just need practice, that's all. Now I remember when someone else, who shall remain nameless first had to learn the staff. She kept hitting herself in the head as well if I remember."
"Eponin, there's no need for you to share my staff learning secrets with Lila."
Lila laughed, while Eponin smirked.
"Eponin can you show me how to hold the staff properly? I tried to hold it how Gab did, but it's not working."
"Sure thing Lila. Now you grab it here and here." She was showing the young woman just where to hold the staff.
"Now, could you come and stand behind me and show me again. It's a bit difficult to work it out from where you're standing."
'Nice one Lila' Gabrielle thought. 'That's one way of getting her attention. Now I'll see if she's interested.'
Eponin sighed and walked behind Lila and place her arms around the young woman. Lila placed her hands on the staff.
"No, you need to put her hands further together. That's it. Much better."
Lila moved one of her hands and placed it over Eponin's.
"You have such strong looking hands, Eponin. I'm sure the right person would feel very safe with you holding them."
Eponin was at a loss for words and quickly removed her hand from under Lila's.
"Um, I think we need to get back to the training."
Lila glanced at Gabrielle who was smiling. 'Yep, one warrior is interested. Keep on working on it Lila.'
"My Queen."
Gabrielle looked up to see Ruth approaching her.
"What is it Ruth?"
"Ephiny has requested your presence in front of the Council. Seems they have called Xena earlier than expected."
"Do you know why?" The bard was worried.
"No, my Queen."
Lila went to her sister. "Is everything alright Gab?"
"I'm not sure. The Council have requested Xena's presence now instead of this afternoon. Something must be wrong. I hope they won't vote against our joining."
"I'm sure it's not that. Everyone can see that you two are made for each other."
"Please, we need to go my Queen. I was told to bring you before the council immediately."
If Gabrielle was worried before, now she was doubly worried. This could only mean one thing - trouble.
"I'll come with you." Lila stated.
"No, it's alright. I'll go by myself. Besides, it's important for you to train. I'll send for you if I need you."
"Alright then Gab. If you say so."
"Don't worry Gabrielle. Everything will be fine." Eponin tried to reassure the bard.
"I hope you're right." Gabrielle replied.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When Gabrielle walked into the Council Hut, she was shocked to see the goddess Artemis standing there. She quickly bowed.

"My Goddess. Why do you come before us?"

"Arise, Gabrielle. It is because of you that I am here. I have come here to talk about your joining. I cannot allow it."

"What, what do you mean?"

"I cannot allow it until Xena proves herself to me that she is worthy of you and your love. I have met with the Council and they are willing to accept Xena's word that she will pledge her allegiance to you and to the Nation. I have invoked my right as Goddess of the Amazons to issue her a challenge."

Ephiny was standing next to Gabrielle and put a comforting arm around her shoulders. She had only heard of this happening once before and the challenge issued that time had almost resulted in the death of the person involved. She hoped that this would not be the case this time as she realised that Xena was not one of the God's favourite people.

"Have you sent for Xena?" the Amazon Queen questioned.

"Yes, my chosen. She will be here momentarily. I would not normally interfere in the joining of my Amazons, but you are my chosen and I need to look out for you even more than the others. Xena must prove herself to me and once she has done that, then I will know that she is worthy."

"What sort of challenge will she need to do?"

"That is not for me to discuss with you, I'm afraid. It's something that only Xena will hear for the moment. When she gets here, I will meet with her alone, is that understood?"

Gabrielle was taken aback by the severity of the last sentence. What had they done to anger Artemis this way? There was nothing that Gabrielle could think of. Surely the Goddess knew that Xena would sacrifice her life for the Amazon Queen. Why on earth would she need her to prove it?

"Gabrielle, you've done nothing wrong and you haven't angered me." Artemis smiled at her chosen. "Due to Xena's past, I wish for her to prove herself to me, that is why I have set her this challenge."

Xena happened to arrive and heard the last part of the conversation.

"What is the meaning of this?" she questioned.

"Normally, I wouldn't interfere in any Amazon joining, but as you know Xena, Gabrielle is my chosen and the news of your joining has caused me great concern. I have stepped in and set a challenge for you. One that I believe will convince me of your love for her."

Xena felt Gabrielle's arm sneak around her waist. She looked down at her love. "I would give my life for her and will if you see fit."

She reached up to brush away the tears that were falling down Gabrielle's face. "No, my love. You will not have to do that. I would rather give up the mask, before I risk losing you to death."

"Brie, I would never want you to do that."

"It wouldn't be your choice. I will do anything to bond with you and forgive me my Goddess, if you do not bless this Union, then I will give up the mask."

"My dear Gabrielle. That will not be necessary. This was just a small test to see just how far the two of you would go for each other. It is clearly evident that Xena cares for you like no other and the feeling is quite mutual."

Gabrielle's heart started racing.

"You two have my blessing, my chosen."

The Goddess was stunned by what happened next. Gabrielle quickly grabbed her in a huge hug."

"Thank you. You will not be sorry for giving your blessing. You'll see."

Artemis was pleased with her Queen. She truly would be the greatest Queen the Nation had ever seen.

"I must be going. Be happy my chosen." Artemis stated as she disappeared.

"It seems as though even the Gods themselves can't resist you my love." Xena grinned.

"Gabrielle. I have never seen Artemis back down from something so important as this. Ephiny informed her. "You must really have her favour."

"Seems we've been given the blessing of Artemis. Now what?" Xena questioned.

"Now you spend three days in the purification hut." Ephiny replied.

"Oh goody." Xena muttered.

"Come on Xe, you'll be fine. It's a great time to reflect on things."

"Then why don't you join me?" Xena's eyebrows shot up.

"Don't worry Xena, Gabrielle will be doing that as well. Just not with you."

"Figures. You like to spoil my fun, don't you Eph?"

"Not always, my friend. Just on the odd occasion." Ephiny couldn't help but laugh.

"We need to prepare you now Xena. You'll see Gabrielle again in three days time."

Gabrielle's arms drew Xena closer to her. She knew that tradition needed to be upheld and that she and Xena had to be separated for the three days during the purification ritual. She didn't have to like it.

"Every moment I'm apart from you, I'll be counting the days until I can feel you in my arms again."

"Brie, the same goes for me too."

Xena bent down and bestowed one of the most sweetest kisses onto Gabrielle that she could muster. One that showed the young bard just how much she was loved.

As she pulled back, Gabrielle whispered, "I love you, Xena."

"I love you too, my love."

Ephiny butted in. "Excuse me. I don't wish to put a stop to something so beautiful, but we must leave now."

"Alright, Eph. Keep your breeches on. I'm ready."

Gabrielle let the tears flow freely down her face as her warrior was led off in the direction of the purification hut with one of the Council Elders following. She sensed a presence beside her and realised that the Council were waiting to take her to the hut as well. She let out a sigh and let herself be led to the Queen's private chamber.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Not sleeping together was not easy for Xena and Gabrielle as they not been apart since declaring their love. Gabrielle threw herself into the task helping Ephiny with village problems and Xena went with Eponin and Solari to the training fields. The two lovers only saw each other at meal times and were never allowed time alone. Three days before the ceremony, Gabrielle was thinking of what she was going to say to Xena in her vows and what she was going to wear. She needed someone to stand with her and as Ephiny was to perform the ceremony, she thought that she would ask Joxer, but then realised as a man, he would not be able to take part in the formal part of the ceremony. She then thought of Eponin, but realised that Xena would probably ask her. She called to the guard and sent her to find Solari.
Solari was sitting in the dining hut with Ephiny, Eponin, Joxer and Lila drinking some Amazon wine. The guard rushed in and whispered into Solari's ear. She excused herself, gave Ephiny a quick kiss on the cheek, told her where she was going and hurried to the Queen's hut. She knocked on the door and then went in.
"My Queen. You sent for me." Solari bowed.
"Solari, arise. You don't need to kneel before me. You're my friend and you know very well that you can call me Gabrielle."
Solari nodded and sat down in the chair that Gabrielle motioned for her to sit in.
"I would like to ask you something and if you don't want to do it, I'll understand. I need someone to stand with me at the bonding ceremony and I was wondering if you would do me the honour."
Solari couldn't believe her ears. She had thought that Gabrielle would want Lila to stand for her and it didn't occur to her that she would be considered, yet here was the Queen asking her.
"M-M-Me do you the honour." Solari stuttered. "Oh Gabrielle, of course I'll stand with you. It would be my honour."
"Good. Now the first thing you can help me with is what am I going to wear and then I need to finish my vows."
They both grinned at each other and then set about at the task at hand.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ephiny excused herself as she needed to check on some matters regarding the joining and Eponin went off to check the new trainees. That left Joxer and Lila and Xena. Lila decided to go watch Eponin so Xena asked Joxer if he'd like to spar with her.

"Um, me?" he questioned.

"Yes, you. What not up for it?" Xena replied.

"Of course, I'm up for it. A warrior is always ready. Let's go."

Xena had sparred with Joxer for nearly two candlemarks and had really had a good workout. Joxer had improved, even if it was only slightly. She had managed to get out most of her frustrations. Her next stop was to find Eponin and ask her to be her second. She headed for Eponin's hut but didn't find her there. She decided to wait outside and then remembered that she hadn't written her vows for the ceremony. She was not one for words so the thought of having to write her own vows terrified her. She knew what she felt, but she was having a difficult time trying to get it down onto paper. She stood pacing for nearly a candlemark before Eponin arrived.

"Well, it's about time you got here." Xena yelled at the weapon's master.

"Excuse me, since when have I been answerable to you." Eponin shouted back.

Xena slumped in a chair and said, "I-I'm sorry."

Eponin had never seen Xena like this before. "Xena, what is the problem?"

"Eponin, I completely forgot about my vows. It wasn't until now that I remembered that I hadn't written them and I'm running out of time. I know what I want to say, but I just can't seem to get the words written properly. Also I need someone to stand with me, will you?" Xena said without a breath.

"Is that all?" said Eponin with a sigh.

"Is that all?" Xena gave her the look, "What do you mean is that all?"

Eponin tried hard not to laugh, but failed dismally. "Xena, everything will be fine. First, I agree to stand with you. And second, we'll work on the vows together, okay?"

Xena relaxed slightly. "Thank you Eponin. You have no idea how nervous I am."

"My, my, the great Warrior Princess nervous. That would have to be a first."

"Yes it is, and you'd better not mention it to anyone if you know what's good for you. Now are you going to help me or are you going to continue to tease me?" said a grinning Xena.

"Of course I'm going to help you Xena. Come on, let's get started."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The next day Xena spent with Eponin showing the eager young trainees new moves. After lunch, it was time to show them what she was really made of. Eponin had issued her a challenge saying something that she was getting slow in her old age. The news of the challenge swept threw the village like wildfire. Gabrielle got wind of it whilst in a council meeting and decided that the business they were discussing could wait for a while. As soon as she dismissed the council, she hooked her arm through Ephiny's and headed down to the training field. The challenge had already begin by the time they arrived. Gabrielle noticed Xena's head jerk slightly letting her know that she had sensed the bard.
Eponin thought she spotted an opening and went to sweep Xena's legs out from under her, but was caught off guard when Xena leapt in the air, flipping over Eponin's head and taking her legs out from under her. Eponin fell flat on her back and looked up to see a wide grin break out on the warrior's face.
"And you were saying what about me being old and slow Eponin." Xena said smugly and held out her hand.
"Yeah, well, it was just a joke. I swear you really don't know how to take one Xena." Eponin shot back.
"Oh I know how to take a joke. I just don't take kindly to people saying that I'm old."
She helped Eponin up and they were surrounded immediately by the excited young trainees. Xena looked above them and sought out her bard. She was standing next to Ephiny and had a large grin on her face. She mouthed, "I love you" to Xena and Xena excused herself from the group and headed in Gabrielle's direction.
"Hey Brie, having a break from the council?" she said and pulled her into an embrace.
"Yes, heard about a certain challenge that was happening between one of my best warriors and my intended, so I thought I'd come down and check it out for myself."
"Well, you know I had my honour to defend."
"I'm sure you did, but I just wanted to make sure you were in one piece for our joining."
"Hah, like I'd do anything to jeopardise being in tip top condition for you, my love."
Xena bent down to kiss Gabrielle softly, which quickly built up with more passion. Ephiny walked up to the two and made coughed, causing the two to pull apart.
"Good timing Eph." Gabrielle growled.
"Gabrielle, if I don't pull the two of you apart now before you start getting hotter, nothing will and I wouldn't be doing my duty …
"Alright Eph. I get the picture." Xena snarled.
Turning to Gabrielle she whispered, "Until later my love." Gabrielle watched as she walked back to Eponin and the group of young trainees.
"Yes, later." Gabrielle replied.
"Oh Eph, I hate this separation."
"I know Gabrielle, but just think of the reunion." Ephiny replied, with a huge smirk on her face.
Gabrielle blushed and grabbed Ephiny's arm. "Come on, we've got things to discuss."
With that the two Queens headed back to the Council hut.
There were still two days until the joining and Xena's mother had sent a note that she would be arriving today, bringing someone with her. Xena had sent word to her mother about the joining and received a message back saying that she would be arriving the day before the ceremony. Xena had asked the sentries not to tell anyone other than her of her mother's arrival as she wanted to find out what the surprise was first. She spent the morning and most of the afternoon sparing with the young trainees and was advised later in the day that her mother had arrived. She raced to the centre of the village and pulled up short when she realised that her mother had not only arrived, but had Hecuba with her. She quickly recovered from the shock and ran up to her mother shouting, "Mother. It's good to see you".
Cyrene turned and pulled Xena into a tight embrace. "It's so good to see you. I was so proud when I received word of your joining. I knew you'd tell Gabrielle how you felt."
"Yes, well that's something that I need to talk to you about some other time, you sneaky woman." Xena replied with a huge grin. Her attention was now caught by the bard's mother who had been standing silently to one side.
"Hecuba, what are you doing here?" she asked with a sharp tone.
"Now Xena." Cyrene scolded, "Hecuba and I have talked a lot these past few days and she's realised a few things."
Hecuba spoke, "Xena I realise that when you and Gabrielle came to tell us the news about your relationship upset me. I love both my daughters and I want nothing more than for them to be happy. When Gabrielle sent word that Lila was with you and wouldn't be returning, I wanted to come after you and blame you for taking my other daughter away from me. Herodotus convinced me that there was nothing I could do about this and if I didn't accept it, then I would lose Gabrielle forever. And now with Herodotus gone …"
Xena was stunned. "What do you mean he's gone?"
Hecuba started crying and Cyrene walked over to her and hugged the sobbing woman.
"There was a fire in their barn a few days ago and Herodotus went inside to help some of the animals escape and the roof collapsed on him."
"Oh Hecuba, I am so sorry. Why didn't you send word?"
"I knew from your other visits that your mother ran the tavern in Amphipolis and she would know how I could get in contact with you. I wanted to come and tell the girls myself about the passing of their father. Sending a note just didn't seem right. Now after spending the past few days with your mother, I realise that to keep the two of you apart would be wrong and if you allow it, I'd love to be part of the joining."
Xena was dumbfounded. Here was the one woman she never thought would accept her and yet here she was basically asking for forgiveness.
"Hecuba, I can see that you mean what you say and I would love to have you at my joining. Why don't you and Mother settle in and I'll have Gabrielle and Lila brought to your hut."
Xena motioned for the guards and organised for them to take her mother and Hecuba into the hut that had been prepared for the Xena's mother.
Xena left the two women with the guards and headed over to the Council hut. She thought about how happy and sad the bard and Lila would be that their mother was there. She slipped in the side door and waited for Gabrielle to notice her. She looked every inch the Amazon Queen. Lila was also present at the meetings having decided that she would like to learn the ways of the Amazons and being a princess she must learn certain things. Gabrielle turned at that moment and smiled. Xena locked eyes with the bard and the electricity in the room changed. She was missing her touch so much and could hardly believe the joining ceremony was to be held the next day.
Gabrielle turned her attention back to the meeting and announced that it was time for lunch. She walked over to Xena and found herself wrapped up in a huge bear hug.
"Have I told you lately how much I love you?" Xena asked.
"No, I don't believe you have told me today my warrior."
"Well in that case, I love you Gabrielle with all my heart and I am so looking forward to our joining tomorrow when I can finally become yours. I miss you."
"Oh Xena, I love you so much too. It's only for one more day and then we'll never be apart again."
"Yes my love, never apart." She bent down and kissed Gabrielle softly. "Brie, I have some news for you. Your mother has arrived in the village and is presently with my mother getting settled."
Gabrielle and Lila both looked at each other. Gabrielle spoke first. "Mother, she's here?"
"Yes, she's got some news for you both that she needs to talk to you about right away."
The three of them walked quickly to the guest hut leaving Ephiny a long way behind wondering what on earth had gotten into them. Gabrielle raced inside and came to an abrupt halt. She could hardly believe her eyes. There on the bed crying was Cyrene and… and… her mother.
Lila almost run into Gabrielle and shouted, "Hey, what's the big ….. Mother!" The two women ran towards their mother who got up and ran toward them. They all fell into each other's embrace and soon the tears were freely flowing. Cyrene had moved to her own daughter and place her arms around her.
"I'm so glad that you were able to convince her to come Mother. Gabrielle wanted nothing more than to be accepted by her mother. You have helped her more than you could know."
"Xena, never underestimate a mother's love. There isn't anything that I wouldn't do for you and when it all came down to it, I don't Hecuba would either."
"Anyway, I still thank you. I love you Mother."
"And I love you too Little one. Come on, let's give them some time alone."
Xena and Cyrene left the hut, but didn't venture far as Xena knew that the bard would be needing comfort soon enough.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Mother, why were you crying? What's wrong?"

Hecuba held her daughter's hands tighter. "Girls, there's no easy way to say this, but your father has died. There was a fire in the barn and when he went in to save the animals, the roof collapsed and he was killed." Hecuba broke down again.

The feeling of loss was instantaneous for the bard and her sister, but in different ways. Lila started to sob loudly.

"No, it can't be true." Lila cried as she wrapped her arms around her mother.

"Oh my darling, it's okay. I was told that he died quite quickly and didn't suffer. There, there, it'll be alright." The older woman whispered to her daughter.

Gabrielle couldn't think. She didn't want to believe it, but new it to be true. Her father was done. The one person other than Xena that had believed in her and told her that she could be anything she wanted to be.

Hecuba turned to Gabrielle.

"Gabrielle, it's alright to cry you know. It will make you feel better."

Gabrielle was angry and stood up. "How will that make me feel better Mother? It won't bring Father back."

Xena raced back into the hut as soon as she heard Gabrielle yelling. She grabbed the bard around the waist and pulled her closer. The young woman tried to break free of the hold, but Xena wasn't letting go.

"Let - me - go." The bard struggled more.

"No, I won't let you go Gabrielle. You have just had some upsetting news and I'm not letting you out of my sight."

"I'm fine." The bard spat out.

"Brie, you're not fine. Please talk to me. Tell me what you feel."

The Amazon Queen tried to break free once more before realising that there was no point and she went slack in her lover's arms. Once that happened, the tears flowed and there was no stopping them.

Xena drew her closer and stroked her hair. "Sssh, it's going to be alright. Let it out. I'm here."

The bard continued to sob as Xena gently picked her up.

"I'm going to take her back to our hut. Again, Hecuba, Lila, I am truly sorry for your loss. If there's anything that you need, just ask the guard that's outside the door. Lila, do you want me to send for Eponin?"

Hecuba caught her daughter's surprised look, but knew she'd find out about it later.

"No thank you Xena, I think I'll stay here with Mother for a little longer. Eponin's due back later and I'll catch up with her then.

"Okay, then if you're sure. Don't hesitate to come over to our hut should you need anything."

Cyrene had decided it best to leave Xena and Gabrielle alone for the rest of the day and she would catch up with them tomorrow. She could see how upset the young woman was after receiving the news of the death of her father. What she needed most now was to be comforted by Xena. She was sure that she could help out in the dining area, so she had the guard direct her in that direction.

Gabrielle's sobbing had slowed by the time they reached their hut. The Royal Guard knew that she wasn't supposed to let the Warrior Princess and her Queen be alone together but by the look that Xena had given her, there was no way she was going to say anything about it.

Xena lay the young bard on the bed and then stretched out next to her.

"Tell me what you're thinking Gabrielle?"

The tears were still flowing freely down her face.

"I can't believe that I'll never see him again. Oh Xe, I loved him so much." Gabrielle started sobbing again and buried her face deeper into Xena's shoulder.

"I know Brie, I find it a little hard to believe myself. But you know, you saw him not long before he died and he told you he loved you. Just think of that time and how happy it made you feel."

"I so wanted him to come to our joining Xe."

"I know you did love. He'll be there in your heart."

Gabrielle's crying continued and Xena just held her love and whispered into her ear how much she loved her and that everything was going to be all right. It was a short time later, that she felt the bard's crying stop and she had fallen asleep.

"Everything's going to be okay, my love. You'll see." She gave Gabrielle's forehead a quick kiss and unwrapped herself from the tight embrace she was in.

She closed the door quietly after her and motioned for the guard.

"I'm going to see Ephiny and tell her what's happened. I'll be as quick as I can. I'm going to spend the night with her and don't be giving me that look. I know the rules, but rules were meant to be broken. I don't think anyone's going to argue with me on this one do you?"

The guard stammered. "Er, uh, no."
"Good then. I won't be long. Hopefully she'll sleep until I get back. I'll also organise for some food to be brought over for later."

Xena knew that Ephiny would probably be in her hut with Solari before getting ready for dinner, so that's where she headed.

Ephiny and Solari were in a heated embrace trying to get spend some 'quiet' time together when there came a loud knock.

"Ephiny, it's Xena. Open up. It's important."

Ephiny looked to Solari who just shrugged her shoulders.

"Hang on a minute Xena." The two women replaced their tops that had been thrown to the floor a few minutes earlier.

Xena rushed through the open door and quickly took a seat.
"Whatever is the matter Xena?" Solari questioned.

"Well you know my mother was arriving today?" The two women nodded.

"She had a surprise with her. Gabrielle's mother."

"Oh, I see." Ephiny mumbled.

"No, that's not really the problem. She brings bad news with her. Gabrielle's father was killed a few days ago in a fire and she came here personally to tell Lila and Gabrielle."

Ephiny and Solari were shocked.

"Hecuba has just finished telling her daughters and I've just managed to get Gabrielle to sleep. I will be spending the night with Gabrielle and don't even think about bringing up any rules to me. She needs me Eph. I also give my word as a warrior, that I will not make love to her. I want to be there for her and hold her."

"I wouldn't dream of trying to force the issue with you Xena.

"Now if you excuse me. I want to organise some food and get back to the hut as soon as I can in case she wakes up and I'm not there."

"Yes, yes of course Xena. You go straight back. Solari and I will organise for something to be brought over."

"Thanks. Hey, can you check on my mother as well? I don't know where she got to."

"No worries my friend." Ephiny put a supportive hand on Xena's shoulder. "Now, go back to Gabrielle. Tell her that we're here for her."

"I will Eph. I'll see you two in the morning."

"Good night Xena." The two women replied as the Warrior Princess headed back out into the fading light.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~`
The bard woke a couple of times during the night and felt herself in the warm embrace of her lover. She was soon comforted by this and went back to sleep.
The next morning, Cyrene thought she might try and see how Gabrielle was feeling.
She questioned the guard who told her that she had heard voices, so she knew that they were awake.
She heard her daughter's voice. "Come in."
"Xena. How are you this morning? I've just come to check on the two of you."
Gabrielle and Xena were still lying in bed. Gabrielle got up and went to Cyrene to hug her.
"It's so good to see you. I am so glad that you were able to come and thank you for looking after Mother."
"I'm pleased Gabrielle. I am sorry for the loss of your father. Are you okay?"
"I will be Cyrene. It's just going to take a little while, that's all."
As if to lighten the mood, Cyrene added, "You know, I wouldn't miss my Little One's joining for the world."
Gabrielle couldn't stop a smirk from appearing on her face. "Little One." she managed to get out.
"Yes and as much as I love you, don't even think about using it." Xena grinned as she hugged the bard.
"Alright, I suppose I'll just have to stick to Xe then."
"You do that my love. Do want to go to the Dining Hut for breakfast?"
"Yes, I'd like that. I'm sure Mother and Lila will be there." She bent down and gave Gabrielle a kiss.
"Enough of that you two. Let's get moving." The older woman laughed as they headed out of the hut.
When they arrived at the Dining Hut, they were greeted by Hecuba, Lila, Solari and Ephiny who were all seated at the Queen's table. Gabrielle sat herself on the other side of her mother. Hecuba sat in between Gabrielle and Lila.
While Gabrielle and Xena chatted to Ephiny, Solari and Cyrene, Lila thought, 'Well no time like the present'.
"Mother, I wanted to tell you yesterday. I've got some news of my own."
"What's that dear?"
"Well, while I've been here, I've found someone that I have become very close to and well I want you to meet her."
"Lila that good news. I am so happy for you."
"Really Mother, You're not just saying that?"
"Lila, if you're half as happy as I can see that your sister is, I can't ask for anything more for my child. Where is she?"
"She was out on patrol last night, but I'll make sure that you get to meet her as soon as possible."
The rest of the meal was spent chatting about this and that. After breakfast, Gabrielle, Ephiny, Hedcuba and Cyrene went back to the Royal hut to put the finishing touches on the ceremony. Lila decided to wait in Eponin in her hut. Xena was at a loss as she wasn't needed anywhere, so she decided to go for a ride on Argo. She had felt that she had neglected her horse since they'd arrived and a good long ride was something that they both would enjoy. She walked over to the stables, saddled Argo and decided to ride to the edge of Amazon land to see if Joxer was on his way back. She had asked him to do a special favour for her and she thought that he would have been back by now. Gabrielle had quizzed her about where Joxer had disappeared to and she had to lie to the bard to try and stop the questions. She had ridden at full gallop and loved the feel of the wind in her hair. She had not done this in quite a while and was glad that she had decided to do so. She slowed Argo and headed for the main road that lead to Amazonia. She was hoping that she would see Joxer soon and didn't have to wait long as she heard the familiar song that Joxer used to chant. She knew the sentries were in the trees above so she decided to have a little fun. She took off in full gallop again with her war cry ringing out. Joxer stopped mid song and froze on the spot. The sight of the Warrior Princess coming towards him in full gallop was more than he could bear. He turned and started to run in the opposite direction. Argo ran up behind Joxer and stopped so that Xena could vault off and over Joxer. He pulled up real quick.
"And just where do you think you're going?" Xena snarled at him.
"Um, well, now Xena." he stammered.
Xena relaxed and smiled at him.
"Relax Joxer. I just thought I'd give you a little scare. There's nothing to worry about. Just wanted to have a little fun with you, that's all."
"Great, just what I need a Warrior Princess looking to have some fun."
"Well, did you get what I wanted." Xena enquired.
"Yep, sure did." Joxer replied patting his pocket.
"Well then, let's see it."
"Nope, Xena I want this to be a surprise for the both of you."
"Don't make me hurt you Joxer."
"You can hurt me all you like Xena, but I'd rather you didn't. Please let me keep this as a surprise to the both of you. I was honoured that you asked me to get this for you, so let me present this to the two of you tomorrow. This is important to me."
Xena raised her eybrow. "Okay then, Joxer. If it's that important to you, I guess I can wait. But it had better be worth it." She threatened.
"It is Xena, you don't have to worry about that."
"Come on, let's get back to the village. I've had to make up all sorts of things to tell Gabrielle about your being away and I was running out of excuses. Now that you're back, you can think of some of your own."
"Oh great, just what I need. The Amazon Queen after me as well."
"Well hopefully, she'll be too occupied with her mother to worry about annoying you."
"What, her mother's here?"
"Yes, with bad news I'm afraid. Seems Gabrielle's father died suddenly a few days ago.
"Oh no." was all that Joxer was able to say.
"He was killed in a fire. Hecuba told Gabrielle and Lila this morning. Come on, let's ride back."
With that she mounted Argo, held out her hand for Joxer to mount and the two of them headed back to the village.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
After breakfast Eponin returned from her sentry duty and was stunned to find Lila waiting for her in her hut. As soon as Lila saw Eponin, she burst into tears.

Lila quickly found herself wrapped in Eponin's arms.

"What is it Lila? Tell me what's wrong."

Eponin pulled Lila tighter into the embrace. She didn't really know what to say as she wasn't into the so called 'mushy' stuff that Ephiny or Gabrielle were so good at. She just let Lila cry and figured she get it off her chest as soon as she was ready. She didn't have to wait long.

"Mother arrived last night and she told me that Father died in a fire. Oh Eponin, I miss him."

Eponin kissed the top of Lila's head.

"I am so sorry, Lila. I know how much he meant to you."

"It's hard to think that I'm never going to see him again. There's so much I want to tell you. You know, how I've met you and how happy I am here."

"Lila, I'm sure he knows. Remember, the dead can hear our thoughts. Just think what you want to say and he'll hear you."

"Are you sure?"

"Sure, I'm sure. I know he would be so proud of you."

Eponin lay back on the bed and pulled Lila to her. They stayed that way for nearly a quartermark. Eponin was nearly asleep when Lila spoke.

"Eponin, I have told Mother about you and she wants to meet you later."

"Lila, I think we're moving way too fast. I mean. Meet your mother?" Eponin was getting nervous.

Lila turned her head downwards. "Are you ashamed to be seen with me?"

"No, it's not that. It's just that well, I don't do small talk all that well. You know I'm more the silent type."

Lila grinned. "I'm just going to have to cure you of that, then aren't I?" Lila looked up into Eponin's deep coloured eyes and reached up and kissed the tip of Eponin's nose.

"Now don't take that one as a challenge." Eponin warned. "So what did your mother have to say?"

"Well, I think she was pleased that I was happy. I hope that the two of you like each other."

"Lila, if she's anything like you, I'm going to love her. I just wish that my mother were alive for you to meet. I know you'd love her."

"Oh Eponin, I am sorry. What happened to her? Are you able to tell me?"

"Well, she died several seasons ago. She died of a broken heart. Her bondmate, my other mother, was killed in an accident and she never really got over it. She just wasted away and there was nothing I could do Lila. I tried, but she hardly knew I was around." Eponin had tears in her eyes, which was something very unusual for a warrior.

Lila walked up to her and embraced her.

"Eponin, I am so sorry for asking you about it. I know how painful it was for you to tell me. I can see it in your eyes."

"It's okay Lila. It's a part of my life and if you're going to be a part of my life, there are things that I will have to share with you - the good and the bad."

"Eponin, I know it's only been a very short time, but you mean a lot to me." Lila whispered.

"You mean a lot to me too Lila." Eponin surprised even herself by admitting this. She finally felt that she could learn to love again.

She leant in and kissed Lila softly. Lila pressed her lips against Eponin's and a moan escaped her. The two pulled apart and just stared into each other's eyes.

Eponin spoke first. "I need some sleep so you'd better get a move on Princess, or they'll send in a search party for you soon enough."

"Let them." Lila replied moving in to kiss Eponin again.

"No, Lila, we have to stop now. Besides, don't you want have to finish helping Gabrielle with the final touches of her joining?"

"Not now, she can wait. I want to go back to kissing you." she replied with such a sweet smile.

"Lila!" Eponin exclaimed, "You know the guards are right outside the door. You are going to help Gabrielle and I'm going to get some sleep, okay?"

"Alright, but I'll remember this."

"I'm sure you will." she replied with a huge grin on her face.

~~~~~~~~~~~
The drums sounded letting both Xena and Gabrielle know that the ceremony was ready to begin. Gabrielle was escorted from her hut to the platform with her arm on Solari who was dressed in her best. Gabrielle was wearing her Amazon necklace, a short leather top and long leather skirt. Several Amazons gasped as she passed them. Her hair was loose over her shoulders and it shined. She took her place on the platform in front of Ephiny and awaited Xena's arrival. Eponin looked at Xena one more time and motioned for her that it was time. Xena nodded back and let Eponin lead her to her waiting love. Xena was wearing a blue silk tunic with long black pants and her hair was pulled back over her shoulders. She placed her arm on Eponin, thrust her head high in the air and proceeded to move to the platform. Gabrielle couldn't believe her eyes. She had never seen Xena look more beautiful than she did at that moment. 'Where on earth did she get that tunic she wondered. I'll have to ask her about that later. Back to more important things' she thought. Xena also couldn't believe her eyes. Tears formed in her eyes when she looked up at her love and her radiating beauty. 'You have made me the happiest person in the world' Xena thought, 'And I'm going to do everything in my power to always make you happy.' Cyrene, Hecuba, Lila and Joxer stood right near the front of the platform. Joxer thought his heart would burst with pride. He had been given the job of toasting the happy couple and Xena also had an important duty to perform later. One that Xena had asked him to do without telling Gabrielle. Xena and Eponin stepped up onto the platform and faced Gabrielle and bowed to her and then to Ephiny.
Ephiny smiled at the two women and then spoke, "Today we bear witness at the bonding of Gabrielle, Queen of the Amazons and Xena of Amphipolis. Before we proceed is there anyone here who wishes to challenge this bonding?"
Not a sound could be heard from the crowd. Ephiny then continued. "Who stands with Queen Gabrielle and speaks for her?"
Solari moved forward. "I stand for Queen Gabrielle and I speak on her behalf."
"What do you say on her behalf?"
Solari turned to Gabrielle and smiled, "Queen Gabrielle is of the greatest virtue. She is pure innocence and she deserves this union."
Gabrielle had tears in her eyes. This was one thing that they hadn't discussed. Well actually, she had tried, but Solari would not tell her what she was going to say. She smiled at Solari and then turned her attention back to Ephiny as she spoke again.
"You have spoken well for our Queen. Please take her left hand and place it in mine." Solari took Gabrielle's hand and placed it in Ephiny's right. Ephiny then turned to Xena and Eponin.
"Who stands with Xena of Amphipolis and speaks for her?"
"I do." replied Eponin moving forward.
"What is it you have to say?"
"Xena of Amphipolis has the heart of a lion, great courage and honour. She also deserves this union."
"Your words are true of this Amazon. Please take her right hand and place it in mine." Eponin took Xena's hand and placed it in Ephiny's left. She moved Xena's and Gabrielle's hands together and joined them.
"Gabrielle, please say your vow to Xena."
Gabrielle looked deeply into Xena's blue eyes and saw so much love in them. She trembled a little and then spoke softly, "Xena, you mean more to me than anyone else ever has. I promise to love you and forever be near. Come live with me and be my love; I should like to call you by all the endearing epithets and yet I can find no lovelier word than the simple word "dear". I commit my life to you and will be yours forever." Gabrielle had decided to keep her vow simply and to the point.
"Xena, please say your vow to Gabrielle."
"Gabrielle, You have brought light into my life when there was only dark before. I promise to always be there for you and to protect you always as my friend, my lover and my Queen. My love for you is eternal and no other has ever captured my heart as you have. Open your heart and take us in, love - love and me. I commit my life to you and will forever be yours."
Gabrielle knew that Xena was not good with words, but what she had heard were the sweetest words that Xena had ever spoken. Her eyes welled up with tears.
"Now that you two have pledged your love for each other, I declare you bond mates for life. Solari and Eponin, please unite these two with the ribbon of love."
Solari handed Eponin the other end of the ribbon and the two moved slowly around Xena and Gabrielle wrapping them in the ribbon. When they had finished, Ephiny spoke again.
"Xena, Gabrielle, you may kiss to seal the union."
Xena bent down to Gabrielle and gave her the sweetest kiss she could muster. She went to pull away, but Gabrielle deepened the kiss. Finally, they separated and a cheer went up in the crowd. Gabrielle looked at Xena and saw the relief in her face and couldn't stop a giggle that came from her lips. Xena's eyebrow shot up, but she didn't say anything. All she could do was grin. The ribbon was removed and the couple made their way to their mothers, Joxer and Lila.
Cyrene embraced Xena first. "Be happy, my daughter." She then turned her attention to her other daughter. "As for you, my dear, make sure you don't let this one get her way all the time." She pulled Gabrielle into a warm embrace.
"Don't worry Cyrene, I won't." Gabrielle said.
Cyrene released Gabrielle and said, "Gabrielle, your mother and I have talked and as it's alright with her, you can call me Mother if you like."
Gabrielle was so happy. Here was a woman who accepted her for who she was and now that she was joined with Xena, accepted her even more.
"I would love that, Mother." Gabrielle pulled her into another hug and reached over to grab Xena's hand and pulled her into the embrace as well.
Hecuba stood aside and realised just how much her little girl had grown up. Here was a woman who had gained the respect and love of one of the most feared warrior's in all of Greece and tamed her as well. She would never again desert her and now that Lila had found happiness in the Amazon village as well, she knew that what she had decided was the right thing to do. She decided then that she would ask Gabrielle if she could stay in the village. The sound of Gabrielle's voice broke her from her reverie and she hugged her enthusiastically.
"Gabrielle, I never before saw how wonderful you have become. I am so proud of you and I know that the love you have for Xena is right. Be happy my child. I know your father would be so very proud of you today."
Gabrielle eyes welled up with tears as she remembered her father. It was such a waste that his life had ended so shortly. She would be forever in his debt that he was able to convince her mother that her love for Xena was not wrong. She was so shocked to say anything. She hadn't realised how much it meant to have her mother with her until this very moment. Xena came up behind her wrapping her arms around her waist.
Hecuba addressed Xena "Xena. "I welcome you to our family and I hope that you will be very happy. I also have discussed matters with Cyrene and I would also be proud for you to call me Mother if you would like."
Xena didn't know what to say and she felt Gabrielle's hands grab hers tighter. She smiled down at Hecuba and said, "Thank you Hecuba. I would be honoured to call you Mother. It means a lot to Gabrielle that you accept our joining, our love."
Xena release Gabrielle and pulled Hecuba into a fierce embrace.
Gabrielle moved to Lila and saw the tears in her eyes, "Oh Gab, I am so happy for you. I love you my sister. I only hope that I will be as happy as you are some day."
"I'm sure you will Lila, and I love you too."
Ephiny spoke and said, "Well you two, come on, a feast awaits."
With that, they made their way to the eating area ready for the rest of the festivities. The food was magnificent and Xena thought Gabrielle's eyes were going to pop out of her head. They had been celebrating for nearly two candlemarks when Xena motioned to Joxer that it was time for him to do as she had asked. He stood up and cleared his throat motioning for quiet. Gabrielle looked at him with and wondered what was going on. She looked to Xena who had a smirk on her face and then she knew that the two of them had plotted something.
"Queen Gabrielle. I am honoured to have been present at this momentous occasion. When I first met you, I never thought that one day, you'd be Queen of the Amazons and I would be one of your closest friends…."
"Get on with it." Eponin shouted which had everyone was laughing.
"Yes, well. As I was saying. It is my honour to present to you a gift from Xena for you both to wear to let everyone know that you are bonded." With that he placed a small box in front of Gabrielle and one in front of Xena. He then went back to his seat.
"Xe, what's going on?" Gabrielle asked.
Xena opened the small box in front of Gabrielle and inside was a small gold ring. She lifted it and realised there was an inscription inside. She nearly choked on the tears that were welling in her eyes. She had not asked Joxer to have them engraved. She had only asked him to get her the rings. She looked at him through her tear filled eyes and he was beaming and he was so happy.
She read aloud the inscription on the ring, "Forever Yours" and then placed the ring on the third finger of Gabrielle's left hand. Gabrielle was speechless and then looked into Xena's blue eyes and saw the tears. She moved closer and gave Xena a loving kiss. She reached down to the box that was in front of Xena and lifted out a similar gold ring. She read out the inscription on Xena's ring, 'Yours Forever" and placed it on Xena's finger. Gabrielle pulled Xena close for a kiss and shouts went up in the room. The party started again into full swing. Xena went over to Joxer and pulled him to her and hugged him tightly. "Thank you so much Joxer. You don't know how happy you made me my having the rings inscribed. You are a true friend."
Joxer blushed at this and then asked if he could have the honour of the next dance. Xena was a bit embarrassed but agreed. Gabrielle looked over at her bondmate and smiled. She let them dance together for a while, then went over to reclaim her lover.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It was getting late and the Amazons were showing no signs of slowing down. Xena looked at Gabrielle and saw that her beloved was getting tired. Gabrielle was engaged in a conversation with Ephiny and Solari when Xena walked over and wrapped her arms around her.

"I'm sorry to pull your Queen away from you, but I think it's about time we left." Xena winked to Ephiny and Solari who grinned mischievously.

"But Xena, I - I " Gabrielle stammered and then looked at Ephiny realising that the matter was not open for discussion. She let Xena lead her back to their hut. Before they left the Amazons formed a guard of honour and shouted their happiness again. Two guards followed behind the newlyweds at a safe distance.

"Xe, do you think Joxer will be okay? He has drunk a fair amount of Amazon wine tonight."

"I'm sure he'll be fine Gabrielle. The last time I saw him, he was with Mom, Lila and Eponin. I'm sure they'll protect him."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Back at their hut, Gabrielle dismissed the guards and told them to return to the party. They were reluctant, but relieved just the same. They quickly returned to the festivities.
Xena held Gabrielle in her arms. Just as their lips were about to touch, a bright light appeared and there stood the Goddess Artemis.
Xena and Gabrielle turned and bowed quickly, "My Goddess." they said in unison.
"Arise, my chosen, Xena. There is no need to bow before me. I have come to bestow a special gift upon the two of you and to grant you a wish."
"What wish is that?" Gabrielle said.
"Anything your heart desires, my chosen. What is it that your heart desires more than anything?"
Gabrielle looked deep into Xena's eyes. "I would love more than anything else in the world to have Xena's child."
"Oh Brie." Xena whispered softly.
"Do you agree with Gabrielle's wish, Xena? Do you wish to share a child with my chosen?"
"Yes." Xena whispered softly never removing her eyes from Gabrielle's.
"Then so be it." Artemis waved her hand and the two were encircled by a light. "When the two of you are ready for a child, all you have to do is call me and I will plant the seed."
She walked closer to the couple and said, "Be happy, my chosen. And you." pointing to Xena, "Take good care of her or you'll have me to answer to."
She looked at Artemis, pulled Gabrielle. "I will". With that, Artemis disappeared in a flash of light.
Gabrielle turned back to Xena "Now, my warrior. I have you all to myself."
"And just what do you think you're going to do with me?" Xena spoke softly.
"You'll just have to wait and see. You look so beautiful in that tunic. Why have I never seen it before?"
"I had Mother bring it from Amphipolis. I wanted to wear something special to our wedding instead of just my warrior leathers."
She pulled Gabrielle in and wrapped her arms around her. The two of them just stood there for a moment hugging each other tightly. Gabrielle moved her head up and looked into Xena's eyes and reached up behind Xena's head and drew it down so she could kiss her beloved. The kiss deepened and it was all Xena could do not to take Gabrielle right there and then, but no, she wanted their wedding night to be special. Gabrielle began to pull on Xena's tunic in an effort to see her naked as soon as possible. Xena's hands came up to hers and stopped them. Gabrielle wasn't sure what that meant and looked at Xena with a surprised look on her face.
"What's wrong, don't you want too?" she asked, her voice quivering slightly.
"No, my love. We have all night. I want to make love to you slowly and savour every moment of it, that's all. I love you with all my heart and I want and need only you."
Xena bent down again and kissed Gabrielle ever so lightly. She picked Gabrielle up and walked her over to the bed, her lips never breaking contact. She carefully laid her on the bed and only then did she break contact the lips had. She slowly removed her tunic and stood naked before Gabrielle.
"By the Gods. You are so beautiful." Whispered Gabrielle as Xena laid down beside her.
"No, you're mistaken. It's you who are beautiful, my love." Xena said as she kissed Gabrielle's ear. She positioned herself on top of Gabrielle and kissed her way down her neck. Gabrielle's body was on fire. She tried to push Xena off, but Xena was having none of that.
"Oh no you don't. I'm going to have my way with you first." Xena resumed her kissing of the bard's neck. Her hands roamed over Gabrielle's breasts and she could feel the nipples harden under her touch. She raised herself up slightly so that she could remove the small top to let Gabrielle's beautiful breasts free. She threw the top across the room and set her mouth down on the nipple to her right. Gabrielle moaned and raised her hips. Xena couldn't resist a smile and moved her hand to the other nipple and squeezed it. Another moan came from Gabrielle's lips. Xena moved back up to claim Gabrielle's lips and kissed her more passionately this time. She moved her thigh against Gabrielle's centre and pushed slightly. Gabrielle moved her hips against Xena's thigh and then let out a moan when it was removed. She looked at Xena and saw a smirk on her face. She would pay for that. She shifted her own thigh and placed it between Xena's legs and moved it against Xena's centre. Xena closed her eyes and moaned loudly and started to grind into Gabrielle's leg. Suddenly, the leg was moved away and Xena cried out. She opened her eyes to look at Gabrielle and realised that she has just been paid back. She laughed. Xena focused her attention on removing the bard's skirt. She loosened the belt and got Gabrielle to lift her hips and pulled the skirt free. Now with her love totally naked, she lay on her back and pulled Gabrielle on top of her. Gabrielle gasped at the renewed contact. Her body was on fire. She repositioned her thigh against Xena and Xena did the same to her. Gabrielle began thrusting herself against Xena and moved up to kiss her for all she was worth. She couldn't control herself any longer. Feeling how wet Xena was on her thigh allowed her passion to take over. Xena knew that she had lost control and all she could think about was giving Gabrielle her release. She shifted Gabrielle slightly as her hand moved down between her legs and thrust two fingers into Gabrielle. The move took Gabrielle by surprise, but she soon recovered and she began harder and harder. She was getting closer to climax with every thrust and she wanted Xena to come with her so she took moved her own hand and thrust two fingers into Xena and starting moving them in time with Xena's thrusting.
Xena let out a loud cry, "Ah ah, Gabrielle, please…."
Gabrielle thrust as hard as she could and her head was swimming as Xena's thrusting was driving her crazy.
"Xena, c-c-come with me."
Xena didn't need any encouragement and she plunged her fingers harder against Gabrielle. Her climax was about to take over and she felt Gabrielle shudder above her and that allowed her to give in and her own climax shook her body. They both shouted each other's name at the time of release. Xena removed her fingers from Gabrielle and the woman shuddered again. Xena felt water on her chest and realised that Gabrielle was crying. She lifted the smaller woman's head and saw the tears that she had just felt.
"What's wrong my love? Did I hurt you? Xena was suddenly worried.
"No, my beloved. I am just so happy. I love you Xena."
"And I love you my Queen."
Xena pulled Gabrielle closer and kissed her with the love that swelled up inside her. She could feel the passion building between her legs again and amazed herself that it was so soon since she had orgasmed and that she needed the bard so much. 'Must have something to do with going without for so long' she thought to herself. With that she flipped Gabrielle over onto her back and started to ravish her all over again. They continued to make love until they were both exhausted. Xena knew that there was only a few candlemarks before dawn, but she didn't care. She wrapped her arms around Gabrielle, kissed her and stroked her hair. She kept stroking her hair until she felt the bard's breathing even out and deepen. Only then did she let herself sleep. They stayed wrapped around each other until later that day.
Joxer awoke the next morning to find himself naked in bed in between Solari and Ephiny. The two women were was still fast asleep and both had their arms flung over his chest.
'Oh, the Gods.' he thought. 'What have I done?'
He tried to lift her arm off him, but as soon as he tried, the woman stirred and mumbled a "Morning."
"Uh, yeah, Morning." he replied.
"My aching head." complained Solari. "When will I ever learn that I can't drink as much as I used to?"
"I don't think you ever will, my love." Ephiny answered her.
Joxer was frozen on the bed. What had happened last night? Did he do something that would make him lose his head? He really couldn't remember. The two Amazons saw the confusion on his face and couldn't help themselves.
"My you're such a wonderful lover." Ephiny breathed and got closer.
"I - I am?" Joxer replied nervously.
"Oh yeah, incredible." Solari said as tried to kiss him.
With that he jumped out of bed and grabbed the sheet to cover himself.
"I'm sorry. I didn't mean to take advantage of the two of you. I didn't mean to break some custom about touching the Amazons. D-do you have to tell Gabby? If she finds me here, she'll kill me. Not to mention Xena. Oh Gods." Joxer's legs gave way and he fell to the floor with his head in his hands.
The look on Joxer's face was priceless. Ephiny and Solari though it best if they let the poor man off the hook.
"Oh Joxer, relax. Nothing happened last night." Ephiny told him.
"It - It didn't?" Joxer replied sounding a little disappointed.
"No. We all had too much to drink and I made it my point to be your personal guard. I take it you've never had Amazon ale before?"
Joxer shook his head.
"I thought so. You got 10 paces out of the hut and then you threw up all over yourself and then on Xena's mother. I figured it was safer to put you somewhere I could keep an eye on you, so we bought you back here, undressed you and put you to bed. Solari and I always sleep in the nude and weren't about to change that habit just because there was a man in our bed."
Solari could see Joxer's body relax, so they got up and dressed.
Joxer quickly turned around, but not before blushing and said, "What about my clothes?"
"Oh, I'm sure they'll be along some time." Solari said with a grin.
"Well what am I supposed to wear until they get back?" Joxer asked.
"I'm sure there's something I can find. I'll go and look in the stores. Be right back." Ephiny replied.
Solari and Ephiny left together.
'Great.' thought Joxer as he sat back down on the bed.
Ephiny and Solari searched through the stores to find something that they thought would be suitable for Joxer to wear. Ephiny thought about making him wait a little longer, but decided the two of them had teased him enough for one day. Joxer jumped up with a start as they walked back inside the hut.
"This is all I could find and I'm sure they'll be suitable until your own clothes are washed." Ephiny told him.
"Thanks. I appreciate it. Now if you don't mind, I'd like to get dressed."
"Go ahead, we're not stopping you." Solari replied, a grin forming on her face.
"Well the least you could do is turn around."
"Oh, it's not like we haven't seen it you know, but if that makes you happy."
The two Amazons shrugged their shoulders and turned around.
"Thank you." mumbled Joxer and put on the clothes. "Okay, all done. Now what's on the agenda this morning?"
"Well I'm going to get me a huge greasy breakfast. That always cures my hangover. Wanna try it?"
"I suppose it couldn't hurt." Joxer replied as he grabbed his head. He had momentarily forgot the pounding that was going on inside his head. "Lead the way."
The three joined Lila, Hecuba and Cyrene in the dining hut, all of them looking for a nice greasy meal. Once they got their meal they all sat down at the Queen's table. Eponin was no-where to be seen.
Ephiny turned to Cyrene. "Did you sleep well last night?"
"Yes, my dear. After washing off my shoes from where Joxer was sick on them and walking Lila back to her hut, I slept like a baby." Joxer looked rather embarrassed. He went to speak, but Cyrene held up her hand.
"It's alright. You were just enjoying yourself. No harm done."
"Thank you Cyrene." Joxer mumbled.
"Did you hear the noises coming from the Queen's hut last night?" Solari exclaimed.
"Solari! Can't the Queen have any privacy?"
"Well if she wanted privacy, she should have gone elsewhere for the night and then we wouldn't have heard her shouting Xena's name at the top of her voice for most of the night or the other way around for that matter." The whole table roared with laughter.
Ephiny warned her lover. "Oh, you are so terrible. Now not a word of this to Gabrielle or Xena. For one, you'll embarrass Gabrielle and two, you'll anger Xena. I'm sorry about my Amazons Hecuba, Cyrene. Please accept my apology.
"No harm done dear." Hecuba smirked. "Solari's right. They were pretty loud."
The whole table laughed loudly again.
Ephiny turned her attention to Lila. "I see Eponin hasn't risen yet."
"No, she hasn't. I'm thinking I might go over there and see how she's doing."
"Well, here's a word of warning. She's not the best person in the world the morning after the night before. If you know what I mean?"
"I understand Ephiny, but I think she won't mind if I go and see her."
"Well don't say I didn't warn you." Cautioned Ephiny.
"Mother, I'm just going to check on Eponin and I'll catch you later."
"Alright then daughter. Where will I find you?"
"I shall meet you back here for lunch. How does that sound?"
"Fine. I'll see you then."
Lila bent down and gave her mother a kiss on the cheek before she whispered, "I love you Mother."
Hecuba smiled at her youngest daughter. "I love you too Lila."
Lila excused herself from the rest of the group and headed off in the direction of Eponin's hut.
"I think your other daughter may have lost her heart to another warrior." Cyrene mentioned.
"Yes, you could be right Cyrene." Hecuba replied.
"Well I for one think that the women in the kitchen could do with some help. Care to join me?"
"Sure, let's see what we can do around here."
Cyrene and Hecuba headed off towards the kitchen to see what they could do to help.
Lila knocked on the door of Eponin's hut and not hearing a reply, she opened the door slightly to see that Eponin was still fast asleep. She walked inside shutting the door behind her. 'She looks so peaceful when she sleeps' Lila thought. She walked around to the other side of the pallet and climbed in behind Eponin and placed an arm around her waist. Eponin snuggled in closer and moaned in her sleep. Lila kissed her hair and whispered, "That's it my love, you sleep. When you wake, I'm going to be right by your side." She tightened her grip and let herself settle into sleep.
Lila was not sure how long she slept before she felt like she was being watched. She slowly opened her eyes and looked into the most beautiful brown eyes she'd ever seen.
"Good morning and what do I owe the pleasure of waking up with you in my bed?" Eponin purred and leaned forward to kiss Lila softly.
Breaking the kiss, Lila replied, "When you didn't show for breakfast, I figured you must be really hung over. How do you feel?"
"Not too bad actually. I think I was more tired than anything. It was such a big day."
"That is was, that it was." Lila agreed.
"How long have you been here?"
"I'd say about a candlemark. When I came in, I saw you lying so comfortably I didn't have the heart to wake you, so I crept in behind you so I could hold you in my arms."
"I'm glad you did." Eponin moved closer and gave Lila another slow kiss that quickly turned into a deep passionate one.
Eponin pulled back. "I think it's time we got up. We'd better stop."
"Why?" Lila questioned.
"Because I won't want to stop if you keep kissing me like that."
"Eponin, I'm pretty sure that love you. I want to give myself to you, make love to me."
"Lila, do you know what you're saying? I mean, I think we should wait. Don't you think we're moving too fast? I mean we've only known each other for such a short time."
"I know what I'm saying and I want you right now. I need you, please."
Eponin pulled Lila close and kissed her deeply. "I haven't felt this way about someone in a long time Lila. Not since …"
"Not since Ephiny. I know."
Eponin didn't realise that Lila knew about her love for Ephiny.
"I'm sorry Lila. I should have told you about my feelings for Ephiny."
"That's alright Eponin. I could tell when you were in the same room that you had feelings for her, so I asked her if the two of you were ever in a relationship and she explained the whole thing. Do you still love her?"
Eponin thought for a moment before she replied. "Yes I do still love her, but I don't think I'm 'in' love with her. I was in love with the idea of what we had and what I thought we might be able to have again. I never thought I would ever find someone that I could love again as much as I did her."
Lila gulped. "Does that mean that you love me?"
Eponin hadn't fully realised what she had said. "Um, yes little one, I suppose I do."
Lila grinned. "Enough talk, more action."
"As you wish my Princess." And with that she flipped Lila onto her back and kissed her again.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Lila was wrapped tightly in Eponin's arms trying to catch her breath. She had never felt so wonderful in her entire life. What she had just experienced was so amazing that she couldn't speak.

"Lila, you were wonderful. I love you so much."

"Eponin, that, that, was the most incredible thing I have ever experienced. Thank you."

"No, thank you. I now know there will never be anyone else in my life but you." She pulled away from Lila's embrace slightly, looked into her eyes and said, "Would you do me the honour of joining with me and become my bondmate?" She looked at Lila's face and immediately thought that she had said something wrong. "I - I'll understand if you can't answer right away. I know we've not known each other for very long, but …" Lila put her fingers to Eponin's lips.

"Yes." Lila whispered.

"Yes. You mean, you … " Lila nodded.

"Oh Lila, thank you, thank you. I will make you so happy. You'll see."

"You already do that." Lila replied as she pulled Eponin down so that she could kiss her again. One thing led to another and soon they were again caught up with each other's need for the other.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Xena smiled as she remembered when Lila had told Gabrielle almost word for word what had happened that day that she and Eponin had first made love. Xena thought that it would be better if she wasn't there, but Lila had bounded into their hut unannounced late in the after the day after their joining, babbling all about it. Fortunately, they had not been doing anything other than just laying in each other's arms talking. Lila was so excited about Eponin's proposal that she didn't notice the look of concern on Gabrielle's face. 'And to think, I was the one that was more concerned with Lila's image. What a laugh'. Xena remembered.
"Oh Gab, isn't love wonderful? I feel like nothing can come between me and Eponin." Lila gushed all at once.
By the look on Lila's face, Xena knew immediately that she'd made love with Eponin.
"Lila, did you and Eponin …. " Xena started.
"Not that I needed your permission, but yes we did and we've been doing it for the last 3 candlemarks and it was absolutely wonderful."
Before Gabrielle could speak, Xena bounded out of bed, grabbed her gown and started pacing.
"Do you know what you've done? My Gods woman, have you no thought about your status here as a Princess? What will your mother think? "
Lila just sat there stunned. Here she was thinking that nothing could come between her and Eponin, when tall, dark and scary was ranting and raving in front of her like she'd committed the worst crime in her life. She could do nothing else but cry.
"Xena!" Gabrielle shouted, "Now look what you've done. Calm down. Can't you see you've upset her with your ranting."
Gabrielle climbed out of bed, wrapped herself in the covers and took Lila into her arms trying to calm her.
"Sshh, it's alright Lila. Xena doesn't mean what she says, do you Xena?"
"What do you mean?" Xena replied.
Gabrielle flashed her the look that meant she was in trouble.
"Lila, who's idea was it to make love. Yours or Eponin's?"
"It was mine Gab. Eponin didn't want to as she thought we were moving too fast. But, I wanted her so badly, that I couldn't help myself. She didn't take advantage of me. I told her it was okay. What have I done wrong?" She started crying all over again.
Xena rolled her eyes and flopped back down on the bed.
"Lila, I'm sorry. It's just that I've come to think of you as my little sister too and I want what's best for you and well, I sometimes get a little over protective."
"Xena, I'm not a child and I don't need protecting." Lila spat at the warrior.
"LILA! I will not have you shouting at Xena like that. She was only acting out of concern for you." Gabrielle smiled at her sister as she wiped away the tears. "Now, come on, tell me everything and don't leave anything out."
"Well, it all started …."
Xena fell back against the bed, placed her arm across her eyes and tried not to listen to all the details of Lila's first time.
