Cast: Cameal, Chris, That’s, Michael, Gabrielle
After centuries of TPTB running the show, the warrior bard turns it around.
I really enjoyed this story. It was soul-satisfying, if you'll pardon the pun. It was a story of love, loyalty and dedication. I've often wondered if I had a guardian angel, and this tale made me feel a little more hopeful. I'd like to thank the author for sharing this wonderful story with us. I hope to see more! - Taleweaver - Dec 31st, 2002

This is a wonderful story. It boths tugs at your heart, and fills you with hope. A perfect little retreat from reality. - Anonymous - Jan 20th, 2003

Annemaart has "nailed it." I loved this one - it shows so much understanding of the way life really is! This one's a gem. - Pysta - Jun-12-2006

i like the romanticism of this much too short story. although i would love to read more about the characters, i know that they will find each other again to live their happiness. - kc - Sep-17-2011

the author isn't a fan of writing first person stories, i'm not a fan of reading 'em.. guess we were both wrong when it comes to this one, though.. - xtra dog - Nov-06-2011

Amazing story! I was enthralled from beginning to end. - Anonymous - Sep-19-2017

This is one of the best conqueror novels i've ever had the pleasure of reading. Keeps you on the edge of your seats to the very end. MUST READ THIS STORY!!!! great diversity of characters... gabrielle was simply brilliant.is there any possibility for a sequal? if not then keep em coming! this author has to continue writing... - Snuff - Oct 25th, 2003

I know I'm not suppose to comment on myself , but I couldn't think of another way to reach you, Snuff, and let you know that: yes, there is gonna be a sequel :). Part 1 is already finished and I'm gonna send that to the Atheneum soon, but since I've tossed 50 html files at the creators of this wonderful site last time, I figured I'd be nice and lay low for a little while ;). If you're impatient and you wanna read it now, just send me an email and I'll point you in the right direction, kay? Ow, and thank you for the nice feedback :). Edge is my personal favorite (don't tell the others, they'll get jealous ;)) so it's really nice to know other people are enjoying it as well :). - Annemaart (aka the author ;)) - Oct 28th, 2003

Very nice take on the conqueror genre, I like the ideal of a strong Gabrielle rather than a broken slave as so many do.One thing that annoyed me was you need to check it for improper word use. (piece instead of peace, rain instead of reign) - Alara - Oct 30th, 2003

If you don't normally read Conqueror stories think about changing your habits with this wonderful piece of fiction. Gabrielle is a strong and very capable resistance fighter, but her will and her heart are tested by the very charming Xena The Conqueror. Xena's not perfect by any stretch, but she sure is likeable here. I've read this a number of times now and I still love it. Anne is currently writing a sequel (Path Of Thorns) which is turning out just as good. - Sai - Sep-11-2006

love the story! glad to hear a sequel is in the works. i will be waiting and watching. - kjviking - Sep-28-2006

This is a most excellent take on the Conqueror genre. I've just read it for the second time, and I think it gets better with each re-read. - Anonymous - Dec-15-2006

My highest praise goes out to this author!! I've read this story several times (and the sequels)and each time I get the same great big thrill I did the first time I sat down and read it. I BEG Annemaart to continue writing...you are a bright shining star in the Xenaverse!!! - JC - Oct-22-2007

this is one of the best conqueror stories i have ever read. What makes this different from the rest,is that gabrielle is not a slave and xena shows a wonderful sense of humor inspite of her being the conqueror. I luv it..Its a must read! - leia - Oct-28-2007

One of my fav conqueror series, definitely a "thumps up"! - OmisLiebling - Dec-11-2007

One of the best conqueror stories ever. Especially for Gabfans. - Anonymous - Mar-23-2008

One of the best Xena Conqueror / Gabrielle stories ever written - Kthac - Apr-09-2008

I read this story twice now & decided I should let you know I've been enjoying it. For anyone wondering, its well worth the read! Thanks and keep those stories coming. There's new Xena/Gabrielle fans out there all the time discovering these great fanfic stories just like me. And, I can't get enough! - Diane - Jan-21-2009

All I can say is - thanks for this great story. - Manoli - Jun-02-2009

This bard is a heck of a smart one! Very well done. This fanfics is a geme! Go ahead and read it! - yuka - Oct-09-2009

I was very impressed and entertained by this story.I found that while reading this story( just like with all really good ones) I didn't want it to end. Which is also good because I can look forward to reading the sequel. - Uber Goober - Jun-05-2010

Excellent, Gabrielle didn't fall down and cry every other paragraph. An incredibly strong character in this story. I like it. - Anonymous - Jul-26-2010

By the time I reached part 4, I was completely hooked. Did NOT want it to end. This is one of the best Xena & Gab stories out there. It builds like all get-out! - Whitney D. - Jul-28-2010

This was a great story. Very refreshing and beautifully developed. Took its time with the buildup and was worth the blurry eye site it caused me. (from long hours of reading in front of the computer)
And even though the stories are completely different it reminded me a little of Spyrel's Pretium Silenti. Perhaps because Gabrielle's character is portrayed as a stong fighter in both. Either way, this should be taken as a compliment cause i absolutely loved Pretium Silenti. If you liked that, you'll probably like this too.
Definitely recommended... - Bella Taggart - Aug-03-2010

So thankful that I found this author - great story Annemart! This is a gem of a story and I plan to jump right on the sequel - yeah! to see how it continues. What an enjoyable read. Twists and turns, surprises, suspense, romance... oh-my. The buildup was fantastic. - x/g fanfic fanatic - Aug-14-2010

I really liked this story. A great job - sassy123 - Aug-25-2010

Loved this story. A really great read!!!! - sassy123 - Aug-30-2010

What a pleasure to read a Conqueror story where Gabrielle is a hardened warror capable of kicking even Xena's ass.All the supporting charecters are well written. - Anonymous - Nov-12-2010

In rereading this excellant novel for the 3rd time, realized I'd never commented on it. Excellant job by Annemart. I enjoy the change in Gabrielle's persona. I've never liked stories that portray her as subserviant to Xena. Here she's not only equal to her but fully able to kick her ass. - Anonymous - Nov-22-2010

gabby kicks ass in this story.. litterally.. really loved this story.. i read it in one go.. yup, no sleep for me last night.. be warned 'cause this story is highly addictive.. it's also very intriguing, original and playful.. keep 'em coming, anne maart.. - xtra dog - Nov-05-2011

Good read! Very suspenseful at the end. - Anonymous - May-11-2013

THE. BEST. CONQUEROR. STORY. EVER!!!!! Loved it!! Really didn't want it to end. - Anonymous - Aug-30-2013

Amazing story, can't believe I missed this gem. Definitely recommend reading this one. Love the way Xena & Gabrielle are written... Especially the sarcastic word play :) - LisaJane - Jul-31-2015

I don't often read Conqueror stories but this one is well worth the time. Awesome - Carolyn - Sep-26-2017

A thrilling adventure with characters that capture the spirit of firsts seasons X&G. Wonderful story. I canÆt wait for a sequel! - Pru - Oct 14th, 2003

this story together with its sequel "Mutiny" are fantastic!! beautifully written, with relentlessly twisted, edge-of-the-seat, junk-food-scarfing plot. kudos to the bard! - Kat - Oct-11-2007

Loved the high seas and swashbuckling adventures. Be sure to read Mutiny after this one. - Kali - Dec-17-2007

This was a really good story. I like the whole swashbuckling pirate theme of the story and I'm so glad that there is a sequel, I'm looking forward to reading it as well. - uber goober - Jun-17-2010

Path of Thorns by AnneM
Conqueror | Ancient | Alternative | Drama | Novel - 442 pages | Finished | Nov-03
Cast: Xena, Gabrielle, Iona, Caspar, Thalia, Niobe, Benitor, Ares, Odell
Part 2 of the Conqueror Series
Series List: Edge of Nowhere (The), Path of Thorns
This story picks up a month after where Edge ended. Everything seems to be working out, between Xena and Gabrielle, between Xena and Iona...But things are never as easy as they seem. And when you're dealing with a confusing relationship that is constantly being attacked, a hormone-ridden teenager with newly discovered godly powers, meddling gods and a new threat coming from overseas....Well...Then you've got yourself a new story.
Well well well... you've done it again haven't you! only part one and already im hooked. can't wait for part two... actually i can because i have to but i don't have to like it! By the way, your fear of not being able to do sequels? understandable but you have absolutely nothing to worry about! believe me, path of thorns is already starting to shape up as good as the "Edge". Your ability to show a side of characters that are very much set in their ways is very refreshing. Xena especially is interesting to explore from this new perspective.KEEP IT COMING!!! - Snuff - Dec 6th, 2003

I absolutely LOVED Edge of Nowhere. I am very excited that you are continuing the saga in Path of Thorns. However, I am hesitant to read the story because it is unfinished, and actually barely started. Are you going to finish Path of Thorns..?? If so, soon...??? - Anonymous - Mar 19th, 2004

please finish this...edge of nowhere was amazing and this will be just as good i'm sure. More! more! - vee - Jun-25-2006

Yes, annoying writer barging in on her own feedback again . Sorry, but thought this would be a good platform. I've been getting some emails as of late inquiring about whether or not Path is going to get finished. The simple answer to this is: yes, of course it will be. I've never not finished a story and this definitely won't be the first. So no worries. My own site is updated more frequently and you can also join my yahoogroup (AnnemaartsStoryUpdates) which is updated even more frequently (I try to send a small piece out once a week).

So, all I'm saying is, bear with me, I know it's been a long wait for this story to get finished, but I assure it will be and I'm doing my best to make it worth the wait ;). - Annemaart - Nov-20-2006

I admit it, I'm just as hooked on this one as I was on Edge. Thanks for continuing one of the most exciting stories around. - Anonymous - Dec-15-2006

This one, like all the histories of Annemaart, is FANTASTIC. But sadly, I thinks that this one will never be finished. But I will wait anyway because Annemaart worth the waiting. - Anonymous - Mar-08-2007

Hurray! A new update! Thank you very much Annemaart for keeping up with this wonderful sequel. (The first one was the reason, why I started reading Conqueror fic) Of course, now I have to live through another cliffhanger... *sigh* - Mel - Apr-06-2007

breathtaking! one of the very best conqueror stories ever. Definitely the most amazing portrayal of Gabrielle. thunderous applauds for the author!!!! - Kat - Oct-16-2007

Riveting, perfectly paced story. It had action, drama and romance. I absolutely loved the portrayal of Gabrielle as a strong, multi-faceted character. I've read so many stories in the Xenaverse and I have to say, this is my favorite series. Well done!! If you haven't read this, you are missing out on something very special. - Anonymous - Oct-21-2007

Wow! what a wonderful sequel! Its one of the best conqueror stories i have read! Riveting.A must Read! - leia - Oct-28-2007

Grat sequel. It is a bit depressing in the middle but the end is great. The only thing I didn't like is that the author writes at the end that this is her farewell to the xenaverse :-((((((. Please reconsider. - Anonymous - Mar-23-2008

This is very good story. It had me crying for the last couple of sections. The ending was definite surprise. - Jenn - Aug-02-2008

Superb. Excellent writing and pacing. I could not tell how it would turn out - and i didn't even want to guess. Just went for the ride.Stayed up into the wee hours to finish it. Moved me to tears. I had put off reading until it was finished then forgot about it. So glad I came back. Well done Annemart! - noelia - Mar-15-2009

Great tale! An incredibly entertaining story. I highly recommend reading this story and I gaurantee you won't be sorry you did. - uber goober - Jun-11-2010

Excellent. Simply excellent. - RhB - Jul-27-2010

Absolutely loved this story. Bravo!!! - sassy123 - Sep-10-2010

As a rule I dislike sequels. This is most definitely not one. Great story that allows all the charecters there share of the spotlight. Even Cleo, certainly not one of my favorites gets her moment in the sun. I would npot mind yet another sequel from this writer. - Anonymous - Dec-18-2010

Loved it! Very good sequel. - Whitney D. - Jan-15-2011

Very good! - Whitney D. - Oct-28-2011

seeing that the author hasn't placed any new stories in a considerable time, i'm guessing xena did catch up with her.. i just hope that the bodily harm xena inflicted on the writer will not prevent her from installing new stories in the future.. fun read.. - xtra dog - Nov-02-2011
