I have mixed feelings about the content of this story, not the way it was written because it's very well written in the way the author portrays a deeply loving relationship that has gone through Tartarus and back and still has survived no matter what has been thrown in their path. Her dialog is mature and revealing, in trying to encompass the deep love these two women share. It is witty and candid and it is honest. But the author also seems to be trying to answer the question of what kind of relationship do these 2 women have after viewing season 5? Season 5 certainly did not reflect the same relationship they had in the previous seasons - there definitely was a wrong turn taken by the creators when Xena and Gabrielle's relationship was almost non-existent and it's that answer that I was unable to reconcile because it compromised the driving force behind their love and contradicted the dynamics of their relationship, unless you're a shipper. Without giving too much away, Badkins's answer to Season 5 and Xena's need for bad boys, i.e., Antony, Ares, is because they have an open relationship with each other in which both accepts the other's sexual alliance with whomever they fancy. I guess some people see their relationship like that but it didn't ring true. That was the only issue I had with this story but other than that, as I said, this was a very sophisticated story while being very earthy. - Karon Reiter - Aug-01-2011 |
