This is a wonderful short story told almost entirely in dialog. Very witty and cute and funny. Creme Brulee is one of the best. - Anonymous - Jul-07-2010

Witty dialogue in this story. The Luce & Dix have great chemistry throughout it. I'd have liked a little more fleshing out around the dialogue, but it's still a fun read. - Lyn B - Mar-11-2011

That was great!!! I really got a kick out of Creme Brulee's version of a fairy tale.It certainly left me smiling. - uber goober - Sep-24-2011

very fun read.. the dialogues are witty and enchanting, albeit a bit nutty as well.. i loved the way the dialogues almost made up the entire story.. feels like different phone calls between two people, while they are definitely in the same space engaging in real life conversations.. a unique style of writing which probably isn't for everyone.. - xtra dog - Nov-21-2011

What a treat it is to find a story, begin reading, then break out laughing deep from the gut not once, but repeatedly.Cooking on High is a perfect dessert of a story -- tart, tangy, and with just enough froth to be irresistible. - L - Sep 27th, 2002

This is a wonderfully written story, absolutely hilarious and definitely one of the best I have read thus far. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for something a little different, a little quirky and a whole lot of funny. Positootly brilliant! - Jade Devlin - Jan 15th, 2004

Great story!! Absolutely funny and charmingly warm.I really hope French & Fry will get a sequel where French's racoon-like temperamental tenacity pairs up with Fry's equally bandit-like inquisitive nature to solve some Michellin-guide fraud going on in restaurants. Not as 2 strangers in one tent, but as a strange, but passionate couple in a relationship!Go on Creme Brulee, get cooking!!! - letterwolf - Mar 29th, 2004

This is one of the best stories I read - and I've gone through nearly everything ;-) awesome, funny, great characters and of yourse: FOOD!!! - Anonymous - Oct-04-2006

I read this a while back and really enjoyed it. I re-read when I saw the recent recommendation and remembered why I like it so much. The characters both French & Fry and the supporting cast are quirky and fun or odd perhaps mean. The dialogue is witty and the romance unfolds over time which to me makes for a better story. - Kali - Oct-17-2006

I don't know how I managed to miss reading this story for so long, but I am glad that I did. I love how Creme Brulee managed to echo moments from the show in a completely original setting. This was a terrific story with all sorts of interesting turns and I would love to read more. Sequel please? - Baerinin - Oct-24-2006

Absolutely loved this. Fantastic writing, witty and good plain fun. So in love with French and Fry. I will hang on to this one as I suspect the more you re-read it the more you'll find. - msprism - Aug-05-2007

What a great story! It has mystery, suspense, romance, all encased in food. Ingenius writing!! An internationally renown chef who has terrorized the food industry finally meets her match. This is an excellent X-G uber. Def worth reading. Very well written, funny and very close to character. - Mich - Apr-16-2011

The best thing about this mad mix of Kitchen Confidential and XWP is that while it's an over-the-top look at the world of culinary intrigue it's not *that* far off what the restaurant world is really like. Put a paranoid violent chef who mutters darkly over her knives together with a bubbly waitron who'll bend your ear about crystal therapy and socialist theory, add a murder, the mob, and a demented librarian bent on revenge. Add a hefty dash of sardonic, twisted humor (this is Creme Brulee after all) and somehow the unlikely pair works in that "I'm not sure why I love you but I do." kind of way. If you've ever worked in a restaurant (even if you haven't) and you've somehow missed this incredible gem, read it now. - wolfalohalani - May-04-2011

I found this to be an enjoyable reading experience. Interesting plot and overall story line.I particularly liked the strange dynamic between the chef and her waitress. - uber goober - Sep-22-2011

when reading an author's works, i always try to save the best for last.. i wasn't wrong in this case.. i've thoroughly enjoyed all of crème brulée's stories, but i liked this one the most.. good job writing.. - xtra dog - Nov-25-2011

This is the most accurate depiction of Xena and Gabrielle's personality in the uber universe. It's a classic story where Xena is a chef and Gabrielle is a waitress. They meet when Chef über Xena decides to take a trip to the wild side and visits a notorious chips and fish fast food joint where Gabrielle is waitressing. Before you know it uber-Gabrille gets fired and über-Xena is indignant of not only the treatment the waitress receives (über Gabrielle) but the temerity of the owner given the atrocious food! I come back to this story time after time. It's witty, smart, classic Xena-Gabriele connection and infinitely unique. I absolutely love this story! Thank you, Creme Brûlée!!! You're the only reason I pause when I make my beloved Flan. Here's looking at you! - Teresa - Jul-30-2012

Meeting for the first time, two women courting one disaster after another in their personal lives get stuck in the same elevator. This author sees things with perfect vision; it's uncanny. This is a not-quite-Disney fairy tale for Halloween - Conqueror/Sleeping Beauty crossover...
I'm a huge fan of Creme Brulee's and this one is a particular favorite. This witty take on Disney's Sleeping Beauty is very entertaining and I enjoy it every time I read it. - Avelua - Feb-03-2008

This is simply fantastic! It's everything I love about Brulee's writing. She manages to be witty (sometimes even fall down funny) yet with all that sarcasm, it's still darn sweet. - Liz - Feb-06-2008

Marjorie Humboldt: A Revelation in Several Parts by Creme Brulee
Original / Uber | Modern | Alternative | Romance (alt) | Novella - 111 pages | Finished | Mar-07
Links: Celestial Buffet
In the wake of a significant loss, an unexpected inheritance brings more with it than Marjorie had bargained for...
One should read this at least twice to truly appreciate the author's talent. The first time through, learn what happens. On subsequent readings, pay special attention to the portrayal and conveyance of Marjorie's confusion. The writing is just exquisite. Incidentally, this isnt uber as I understand the definition. No raven tresses or grass green eyes... - jj - Mar-08-2007

This is a fantasic story. The author conveys Marjorie's confusion and naiveté beautifully. Simply a wonderful story! - jd - Mar-14-2007

what an amazing peace of work. this story makes one appreciate what we have today and salutes all those who quietly (or not!) came before us. - carinjo - Feb-05-2008

Oh my God! I can't believe I didn't find this story sooner. What a wonderful little surprise to brighten my week! - Anonymous - Apr-02-2008

This is a wonderful story! Extremely well written, funny and thoughtful. Also a pleasant way to learn about a more difficult time. - Anonymous - Feb-04-2009

It was refreshing and definitely a different experience from what I'm used to. It has also given me new in-sight on the subject of sexual discovery and homosexual experiences.
Much appreciated for the great work! Thanks! - Anonymous - May-02-2010

I just want to say that I absolutely loved this story. It carried me along so much that I re-read it just so I could savour it a little longer. What a wonderful story. Thank you. - Omega13 - May-12-2010

this story is exquisite. i am not 100 percent in the marjorie camp but the side characters, including the various pets, make for a strong cast. - kc - Sep-25-2010

i don't know what it is about this story, but it didn't quite grab my involvement as others do and have done.. maybe it's the time frame.. the 70's being long past and feminism having evolved quite a bit since then?? it is very well written and a fine exploit of how things and society in general, were.. it is even very easy to understand how the gay community and specifically some individuals felt way back then, but it doesn't capture me, as a modern day reader having the utmost respect for the trials and tribulations those before me have gone through.. as i said though, well written and worth the read if you want to have insight in the struggle others went through.. - xtra dog - Nov-21-2011

it was really nice. a very calming story something you can relax with and enjoy the experience
- sandy - Nov-19-2012
