One night an accident occured. An accident that left Melina Grayson picking up the pieces of her life, only to find that those pieces didn't fit together anymore.
I've read each and every story that this bard has given us. I believe 'Afraid of the Dark' is her best work yet. It was acutally hard to choose a favorite. I encourage anyone who wants a great read to pick any of this bards work, I garuntee you'll love it. - raven_heart - Sep 17th, 2002

I started this story by mistake, I actually thought it was a story by a different author. But once I started reading this story I didn't want to stop. I thought it was great! A very suspenseful story, but the author didn't try to draw it out like some I've read. It was very cleanly written. I even wrote the author to tell her and she wrote back, a very funny and polite note. She's working on a new story and I for one can't wait to read it. - Tina - Oct 24th, 2002

She is one great writer, maybe the best around - Anonymous - Oct 27th, 2002

Here's a story that made me feel sympathy, pain, fear and elation all in the span of 46 pages. I can't believe I haven't read this before now. I'm going back to read all her other stories! - TJC - Nov 1st, 2002

Oh my! What a story. It's been a while since I was so drawn into a story. I'd recomend this to anyone and everyone. - J_Dierdre - Nov 28th, 2002

Happily, every now an them I come across a gem. This was a great story that I must have over looked. Fantastic job. - Sarah - Dec 23rd, 2002

Wow! That was better than Believe. Not something that I thought was possible until I read this story. Very emotional, it had me ready to cry in places. I noticed that there are six other stories by this author and I plan to read them all! - Jen - Jan 15th, 2003

Excellent story! It's one of my favorites. - Lori - Apr 25th, 2003

Intense, satisfying and leaves you wanting to read more of this bard's work. - NET - May 7th, 2003

A great story. I loved it. I wish there were more of it. This is a definite must read, or even re-read if it's been a while. Excellent. - BB - Aug 24th, 2004

I had forgotten this story's name, but not the story itself. A terrific mystery with realistic thought processes and dialogue. (It's no spoiler to say that in this story, a woman is blinded in a car accident and then begins "seeing" disturbing things.) A great story. - Fanficionado - Aug 29th, 2004

WOW!! Fantastic writing and story, I couldn't stop reading. Will there be a continuation? C'mon, there's gotta be. I too am going to read all the other stories by this author!! :) - Erin Kelly - Dec 30th, 2004

Here we are deep into 2005, and I still come upon such excellent writing. I've read nearly all of this author's work, a couple more to go. They all leave me thinking..great entertainment. - Anonymous - Sep 16th, 2005

This is a highly imaginitive story that had me enthralled during the entire reading. It had mystery, suspense and romance, but not too much. I loved it and I know anyone who reads it will too. - reads_a-lot - Oct-10-2006

Outstanding writing! Awesome story and heartfelt Characters! Perhaps a sequel could come of this? *grins* - Waking the Dream - Nov-20-2006

Most of the time when I read the fiction housed on this site I'm affected by it. Sometimes I'm deeply affected, so much so that I can actually feel what the characters are going through. This is one of those stories. I've never given much thought to tragedy striking my life. 'Afraid of the Dark' made me not only think about it, but also wonder how I would react. Even though I find it hard to fathom the magnitude of the loss and the desire to end that pain. I was able, for a moment, to imagine it and feel it. It may be a while before I read this again, but I will read it again. I suggest you read it too. - Fran - Mar-12-2008

As soon as I read it I figured inspired by X-Files! It was good, I enjoyed reading it! - Orion - Jul-12-2008

Wow. Just, wow. - Anonymous - Aug-01-2008

This is a truly awesome read! Thank you. You definitely possess great imaginery and writing skills. If you're not already, you should be a published writer...a best selling one at that. I'm a writer wanna be and I'm envious of the chills and excitement your story has provided me. I'll definitely be looking for more of your work. - Anonymous - Aug-05-2008

Had me biting my nails! Wonderful, great suspense! I really enjoyed the relationship between Melanie and Tricia especially the inner struggle Melanie experienced with her emotions. It would be great to read about their continued relationship and whether or not they experience more challenges. Great job! - Chess - Aug-24-2009

Fascinating story that draws you into the characters lives. It's very well written. I'd like to read a sequel too:-) Well worth a read:-) - Lyn B - Jul-26-2011

what a great story highly reccomend this and hope to see a sequel to it soon - chippy - Oct-07-2011

this story reminds me of a movie starring madeleine stowe.. i don't remember the title but the gist of it was the same.. still a nice read, though.. - xtra dog - Jan-27-2012

Although this story deals with harsh circumstances, I took away a feeling of hope. Unlike many fics I have read where the main characters use meaningless sex to "deal", the underlying message in this one is how love and devotion can weather any storm. - Anonymous - Sep-09-2012

Really enjoyed this one. - Wheezie - Mar-10-2014

Wow! i mean my God, great writing, it was so well written i'd swear i'd just watched a movie not read a book. - Aahi Young - May-21-2014

Wow! i mean my God, great writing, it was so well written i'd swear i'd just watched a movie not read a book. - Aahi Young - May-21-2014

Wow, just wow! What an incredible read! The plot really does shine in this one and the romance is so skillfully woven into the plot's fabric, at the end this reader was left feeling very satisfied. I agree with other reviewers, it was like watching a movie. Knock people out of the way to get to this story, it is that good. - Stacia - May-22-2014

Among Us by Darkenedkarma
Xena | Alternative | Drama | Short Story - 27 pages | Finished | Jun-02
Cast: Samantha, Claire, Anique, Greg, Benson
No one believes in werewolves. And why should they? Werewolves don't exist. Or at least that was what Samantha thought until one night she saw one. With one swipe of a claw her world was turned upside down and she must learn to cope with the knowledge and the consequences of that night.
I'd love to see a sequal to this story. I've got a growing fondness for werewolf stories since reading Hunter Ash's "Red Moon Series". The story is nicely done, a great quick read. Not as mentally inticing as "Believe" was for me, but very good nonetheless. I'm slowly making my way through all the stories by this author, she's quite the find. - Lisa - Jan 4th, 2003

I just finished afraid of the dark and it was excellant, I am now going to read the rest of this authors works. the only thing wrong with this story is that it needed to be longer, much, much longer. enjoy - peggy - May 5th, 2003

I printed that story out a while ago and finally found some time to sit back and enjoy a good werewolve story - and that one is certainly one of the best I've read so far.
The Author did an incredible job with that story and I highly recommend it. - querdenker69 - Nov-20-2006

I like this story. Please sequel. - rosii59 - Dec-04-2009

*** SPOILER ALERT *** i keep telling myself that i don't like werewolf stories.. but then i read one and i find that i'm actually enjoying it.. confusing.. just as confusing as an uber x without any strive for redemption.. nice read.. - xtra dog - Jan-26-2012

I love werewolve stories. I say bring it on - Anna28Carm - Mar-25-2017

Believe by Darkenedkarma

Cast: Lauren, Uriel, Madeline
Honors/Awards:  #84 in 2003
Wow. An Amazing story. I admit to not recognizing the author, so I read because it was new and short (less than 50 pages). I was greatly surprised and wonderfully amazed at the depth and care, and the wonder the story created. Two memorable characters on both heaven and earth. I highly recommend this. - Lisa - Jan 4th, 2003

This is a short story that is everything I've come to expect from this bard. It's packed with emotion and action. It's a story that draws you in and doesn't let you go until the end. Personally I didn't want it to end. This is a must read. - Tara - Jan 4th, 2003

This was very good. Well written, emotionally powerful. An all around great read. I highly recommend this to everyone. - Cheryl - Jan 8th, 2003

My second posted reading of the day, and just as nice as the first. This piece has emotion and depth. I loved the line "Burning her image into her mind to hold onto for a lifetime." What a thought. Good read. - Constance D. - Jan 9th, 2003

Excellent read. A powerful story, the emotions jump right off the page. I thought it was wonderful. - Anonymous - Jan 14th, 2003

Wonderful story, very moving. I will definitely read this again. - Jen - Jan 15th, 2003

even for a non believer this story is very moving. - Anonymous - Aug 10th, 2003

More then words can express how this story left me. It tempts my faith.. tips my beliefs on endāmakes me question real and unreal. God's intent and the power of love. Tears still roll slowly down my cheeks. My heart aches a bit. I feel proud for some reason and I am very grateful to the author for righting down this vision. God grants miracles but does only so when no other party is paying in pain for that gift. Be merciful and make the pain a bit less in us all. Could one wish for a sequel and be granted one? The only one with the grace to grant that wish is you Darkenedkarma. - MoonLightning - Jan 23rd, 2005

Another good read. I think this is a wonderful author. But again, it's too short!! More. More. More. - DDY - Jun 30th, 2005

That was beautiful! There has got to be a sequel. Someone tell me there will be one. It screams sequel. - Amy - Sep 6th, 2005

This was really good. Thanks for the read! - Anonymous - Sep 27th, 2005

Excellent story. I highly recommend it. - T. - Oct 6th, 2005

I thought "Afraid of the Dark" was great but this story dazzled me. The imagination of this bard is amazing. - reads_a_lot - Oct-10-2006

This was a wonderful story. I loved it. I highly recommend it. - Anette - Mar-20-2007

I absolutely love this writers work. I have yet to be disappointed by anything I've read from this bard. This story is a mix of wonder, innocence, love and tragedy. I would love to see a sequel. - Fran - Mar-12-2008

WOW!!! I have not words! It is amazing, Powerful, beautiful. Excelent Work! - V - Aug-08-2008

Amazing!!!! This is a very powerful story, penned by an extremely talented bard. You can almost feel Haniel's anguish and pain. Beautiful read that begs for a sequel. Loved the last line of the story - Nancy - Aug-13-2008

i wish for a sequel - a satisfying, deliriously romantic and happy sequel. pretty please. - kc - Jul-25-2010

if an author is able to paint such an enthralling picture with the least amount of words, you know that you have read a very talented author's story.. i truly hope this author keeps writing (and posting) such wonderful stories.. - xtra dog - Jan-27-2012

Outstanding story by an outstanding author. This story changed my life. Really. - Believer - Apr-30-2013

I was going to write a teaser for this but the Beverly Hillbilly's theme keeps playing in my head making it impossible. So, in a nutshell, this is a time travel/romantic story that gives a brief glimpse of my idea of hell or the future. However you want to look at it. I just know that one day republican's will run the earth and make all the fun go away.
I haven't read a story by this author that I haven't liked. Crescent Wrench is no exception. It was great. I can't wait for the next story to be posted. - Rowan - Oct 8th, 2002

funny and sweet story.. sci-fi with a twist.. another great story from this author.. - xtra dog - Jan-27-2012

Part 1 of the Obsession Series
Series List: Obsession, Obsession Returned
As a child, Alaina was raised with the knowledge that she would be an eternal bringer of death. Even knowing that her mother brought her into the world. It's hundreds of years past her birth and rebirth as a vampire when Alaina finds Lindsey. She's drawn to Lindsey in a way that she has been drawn to no other. It's an obsession for Alaina that could end in death for Lindsey.
I loved how quickly this story moved. To say that it was heartbreaking in places is an understatement. Underneath the darkness though there's light, I really like that about this peice. - rowan999 - May 9th, 2002

In the spirit of halloween I clicked on this story because it was supposed to be a vampire tale. It was fabulous. In a world where bad vampire stories abound, it was a real pleasure to find one that was well written. It had enough horror and violence to make it believable, but nothing gratuitous. I'll be looking for this story next year about this time. - Melanie - Nov 1st, 2002

I loved this story. I'm so glad I found it. I just wish there were more of it. - DDY - Jun 30th, 2005

This was an excellent short story. I'm not usually into vampire tales but this one was too good. Obsession is a vampire tale but it also happens to be an unconventional love story. I saw there was a sequel called Obsession Returned and I can't wait to read it. In fact, I'm going to do that now. - Tara - Sep 13th, 2005

I love vampire stories and this one was especially good. - reads_a_lot - Oct-10-2006

i'm not into vampire, etc., but a good romance is a good romance, and this one is pretty intense, too. - kc - Jul-25-2010

this story is exactly what it promises to be.. it is all about obsession and how it can control you.. even people who aren't into vampire stories should read this one.. - xtra dog - Jan-27-2012

This continues where 'Obsession' left off with Alaina and Lyndsey.
In this Sequel of Obsesson we see the return and development of the first part characters all wrapped up in a compeling storyline filled with several moments of suspense as well as action. It is without a doubt one of the best stories I have read that touch the vampire genre. It kept me hooked till the end of it. My congrats to the author. - Ravenpaladin - Sep 6th, 2002

A pretty good sequel. I wasn't expecting the twist. Good read. I just wish this bard would post something new. She's too good at this to just stop. Where are you Darkenedkarma? - reads_a_lot - Oct-10-2006

Wow, this sequel really is very compeling and expresses the love between Alaina and Lindsey. I really love this series very nuch and hope for a continuing with baited breath.

Ps: I really really love vampire and this just boost my love for them even more. Don't wait another minute, READ!! - Kuu - Jun-05-2007

Rapture by Darkenedkarma

Honors/Awards:  #63 in 2002     Top-25 #1.
It's the new millennium and God has again sent a child to earth to bring about the Rapture. Yet God's plan will not go unchallenged. Cast from heaven, driven from the love and joy found there, consumed by hate and a need for revenge God's enemy will try to stop the Rapture.
This was a very original story! I don't think I've ever come across one quite like it before. After reading it, I do wonder and worry about the author. I did read the disclaimer, but still I wonder. Even if the author is a heretic I'll read it again, just because it was an original interpretation of a very old idea. - Kelly - Sep 24th, 2002

I stumbled upon this story through reading the author's other work, which I love. Rapture is gorgeously written, thoughtfully complex, and full of seriously heavy ideas. Its worth every minute. Truly a brilliant piece of literature. - Anonymous - Feb-04-2008

I love stories that delve into the gray areas of religious theology. They are pretty rare and so I was delighted to come across this as it was well written and well thought out. Great read!! - Becky - Mar-18-2008

I came across this story after reading other works by Darkenedkarma. This is a thought prevoking read, disquieting to be sure. I know I will read it again. - rleef - Feb-08-2009

Wow. I have always been a student of religion, and in fact I took a class similar to the one in the story in college. This story once again caused me to question. Fantastic. - Karen - Jun-19-2009

wow.. not what i expected at all.. magnificent read that questions anything and everything about religion and our perception of god.. definitely a story worthy of the highest recommendation.. - xtra dog - Jan-27-2012

With a simple twist of fate entire lives can change and destiny can be redefined. This is just one possible reality in a make believe world.
I could not stop reading. I loved the show Birds of Prey as well as the comic. I loved that Barbara Gordon was not in a wheelchair and had a greater role. I loved this story. Hopefully there will be a sequel in the making. - Anonymous - May-30-2008

A wonderful story about the Birds of Prey in an alternate time line where Barbara is not in a wheelchair and Helena's mother was not killed in front of her. The author did a great job keeping the characters true to the show without the past trauma. A very entertaining read. - Word_Mage - Jun-01-2008

What an amazing talent! This author only keeps getting better and better, there are no words, you just have to read it! - Anonymous - Jun-01-2008

Wonderfully enthralling story, one of the best that I have read in this genre. - Anonymous - Jun-03-2008

I've been braching out into different fan fiction realms lately. I have to say, this is one of the best Birds of Prey fiction I've read so far. It was witty and funny. It kept me interested throughout the entire story. The characterizations were spot on. A truly great read. Thank you so much! - Anonymous - Jun-03-2008

This was really good. Great banter. Hilarious interaction between the characters. An all around good read. I also have to say, it wasn't cheesy at all. Well worth my time. - Cam - Jun-05-2008

I loved the pairing and the interaction between the 2 main characters. Thoroughly entertaining and a great read. Please write longer stories! - searcher - Jun-18-2008

I really enjoyed the banter between the characters. It flowed very well from the movies then back into the TV show. I never really paid that much attention to the Birds of Prey show but luckily, I didn't need more than an idea of what the show was about in order to appreciate this story. The characters are memorable and I admit that I'm a bit curious about what other kinds of BoP fan fiction might be out there. As a fantasy and sci-fi lover I'm very happy about finding this story as well as the author. She has lots of good stuff. Thanks for the wonderful story. I hope you plan a sequel. - Anonymous - Jun-23-2008

This was really, really good. I absolutely loved how the main characters meshed with each other. The flirting was outstanding and the dialogue felt real. It kept me hooked from the first word to the last. I read it then turned around and read it again. Like I said, it was really, really good. - Jill L. - Jul-02-2008

I absolutely enjoyed this interesting story. Nice twist of fate! - filfil - Jul-27-2008

Whether or not you're a fan of the DCU (comic/movie/TV), this story is totally worth reading. Love what the author did with the characters' backstories, including the relationship between Helena's parents and between them and Helena. She totally deserves the last name (trying not to be too spoiler-tastic here) and upbringing and it was wonderful seeing this version of Helena-Barbara interaction developing.

Might I also I add a request for a sequel? :) - oriflamme - Aug-10-2008

I loved this! I did some serious laughing while reading this story. It was a great read. - Tanya Hall - Sep-12-2008

This bard is a lot of fun and has some very original ideas. If you like supernatural or meta stories give her a try. I'd be up for more Justice League adventures with these two in a heartbeat. - Kali - Sep-17-2008

I love the BoP universe. And this story is just such a departure from what the evil show/comic writers did with Helena and Barbara's characters. I loved seeing the development of all the relationships. Parent/child, siblings, mentor/pupil, partners in crime fighting and finally, lovers. There was so much story and funny banter, it was Stupendous! There's angst...of course there's angst but not too much. This is really a fun time. I was sorry to get to the end. - Anonymous - Oct-13-2008

This was really great! I couldn't put it down. I finally finished it at 3am. Now I'm upset that it's over. Definitely, worth the time to read it. - Anonymous - Jan-08-2009

Very funny. Extrememly good. - Anonymous - Feb-23-2009

I've worked my way through this writer's work. I loved them! It took care of my sci-fi itch in the most amazing ways. Angels, demons, vampires, super hero's and werewoloves abound. I floundered on wether or not to read Twist of Fate; I'm not really a comic person and I didn't like the show. But, I pressed on since I loved everything else so much. I LOVED IT. It's hard to pick a favorite but I think this one may be it. Or Believe. That was so touching and powerful. Sometimes painful too. I can't say enough good things about this writer. I can see a vast improvement from her earlier works to her last one. Thank you so much! - Candice - Mar-19-2009

I'm not sure why I started reading Twist of Fate. I don't even know what "Birds of Prey" is and I haven't previously read anything by Darkenedkarma. But, I am glad I did. Fun and interesting story; witty dialogue; and excellent writing. As soon as I'm done here, I'm going to start reading more from this talented author! - Carole - Mar-24-2009

That was really terrific! - Anonymous - Jul-27-2009

I am now in love with this fandom. I've been lurking around the message board reading what everyone is posting. There was a discussion about Birds of Prey. It was so heavily recommended I bookmarked it. I read Twist of Fate first and loved it. It was amazing. Then I moved onto Bad Grammar. I wish I'd read them sooner. They were amazing. - Anonymous - Nov-22-2009

Great read, couldn't put it down. Never knew about this show til I stumbled on to the FF. Whish I had seen it. But somehow I think the FF is better. - LeaAnn - Dec-22-2009

First, this should be under original or uber fiction or something. It's been on the website for a while and I only stumbled over it because I clicked the wrong button. I'm glad I did. I absolutely loved it! I had no idea what it was but the title grabbed me(Olivia Newton John- am I aging myself here). It was only after I scrolled up to send the author an email that I noticed it was a fan fiction for Birds of Prey. A seriously good read. It was just fun. I'm done gushing now but I have to say if you click on the wrong button and find this work, read it! It will not disappoint you! - Christine - Apr-11-2010

Such an interesting AU take on this corner of the DC universe. The dialogue crackles and the B/H dynamic is as complex as ever. A great read, thanks! - Anonymous - Apr-17-2010

This was the first BOP story that I had ever read. To me, this was the standard. Any proceeding story that I read had to be this good, or better. But because this is my favorite story, it's super hard to top this one. If you have a little time to kill before finals or you're just itching for some sexy Barbara and Helena time this is the story for you. Seriously. It's fantastic and sexy and everyone should read it. - Lina - Dec-05-2011

One of my all time favorite BOP fanfics! It has everything - a cocky, yet intelligent Hel, the intellectually fantastic yet strangely bold Barbara, an engaging storyline that all leaves the reader at the end pouting because it is over. Would LOVE a sequel or 5!! Definitely worth the read and one you'll return to again and again. - Swishla - May-01-2012
