What's the connection between drug dealers, a missing woman, council business, Welsh architecture and Sleeping Beauty? Striker might have made a connection between two of them... But she came to London to forget and to hide... and to seek. She had other riddles to solve. But an encounter at a hospital's Accident & Emergency department turns her priorities, her life and her heart upside down.
This story was AWESOME!!! A MUST READ for all! It puts together just the right amount of mystery, danger and romance all rolled up in one. Her characters draw you in straight away. It is about a woman trying to find someone. She searches high and low but realizes her search ends where it began with finding herself. I can't tell you enough how good this story is. Check it out for yourself. :o) - Caden - Jun 7th, 2004

This is one of the most beautifully written stories I have read in quite a while. Between the bad guys, a missing person, drugs, and other mysterious happenings, you will find a cleverly crafted story built around 2 characters you will fall in love with as you watch them fall in love with each other. This author uses her words to create visions that dance in your heart and paint for your soul. You will want to visit where these girls go, cheer for them, cry & sigh as their relationship grows and they come face to face with their fears, real or imagined. Bumpy roads, tears, and a sweet tenderness as well as some humor. The scenery is gorgeous and when words can create that in your mind, you gotta love this story and the creativity of this writers efforts. Book of the month? Maybe, but it is definitely my choice for Chocolate of the Month between two covers. - O Ger - Jun 7th, 2004

Brilliant! This is an absolute corker of a story. I'm giving it 6.5 stars. Devize has written an astounding tale which has a great whodunitcatchthebadguys plot interspersed with a strong romantic thread and replete with angst. The story will hook you and the revealing gems about our heroines will knock your socks off. Devize also kept me in a constant state of arousal by her teasers. This is a hot one, folks. It has everything in an explosive fairytale romance for our uber couple. - E - Jun 11th, 2004

Easily one of the best ubers I have ever read. Well written, great plot, lots of tension (of all kinds) and great character development. - Anonymous - Jun 29th, 2004

i just finsed reading your story man it was great hope to more and soon - Anonymous - Jul 6th, 2004

We meet Morien and Striker who will fall in love as will the readers with these two opposites. Guess which is tall & blue eyed! A story that is kind of sweet, but has danger, flight, bad guys, mystery all entwined with a soulmate love tale with some pitfalls. Dialogue is really good and descriptions of places, feelings and actions are so full of depth that you feel like a part of it. Hated to see it end & hope Devize writes a sequel. I miss Morien & Striker. - Sandy - Jul 7th, 2004

What a story! I just finished reading it and am seriously contemplating ringing in sick to read it all over again. Striker and Morien are two of the best characterisations I have seen yet (and I eat a lot of uber!). This story is a gem and I hope there is more to come. Besides doing a fabulous job with the leads, Devize deserves a standing ovation for her carefully crafted minor characters. Danny had a part in my heart as much as anyone and its rare that you get a story that makes you care that much. and makes you scared... and makes you laugh... and makes you wanna hit certain people over the head for being infinitely stupid...This one really does have it all. Read it now. It's the real deal. - Vee - Apr 22nd, 2005

What can I say about this story except, wow! This is one awesome story. I really loved it. I hope to read more on these characters soon. If you havent read this read it now! - Anonymous - Oct 24th, 2005

An exciting, unpredictable page-turner. Although many authors succeed in creating action-packed stories, this author is able to add a level of realism and humanity to the characters few authors can accomplish. - diss_turbed_teddy - Dec-07-2006

Simply loved it. Every minute keeps you on your toes... You won´t be able to stop before you´re through. It´s simply beautifully written. I highly recommend this story and I really thank the author for such a wonderful created story! - Ines - Jun-15-2007

Awesome brilliant wow and anything else you can think of. great read. once you start your done for, what a great bard you are. - vampireslayer2 - Jul-05-2007

Highly recommend this one! Very well written storyline, likable characters with believable flaws, and of course, romance. I honestly couldn't ask for more... except y'know, a sequel maybe (or just another novel by this author!) - Jen - Jul-15-2007

Wow! This was a fantastic, well-written story. The only negative aspect I could find was the use of the phrase "You're incorrigible." I think it's used in every fic I've read. But other than that, it was a refreshing, original tale. Hope to see a sequel. - popstalin - Oct-24-2007

Love this fic. - Nikki - Jun-09-2008

I loved this story--so many twists and turns. I would love a sequel.... - Stormy - Mar-22-2009

A good story with plenty of action and thrills. It's too bad that the author seems to have disappeared from the fanfic scene, as there are a number of unresolved plot threads in this story that could have fueled a sequel. - Anonymous - May-14-2009

Awesome story! Such a thrilling ride, emotionally packed. I hope the author writes fanfics again..:P - Anne O'Nymous - Aug-19-2009

Awesome. - Brighteyez08 - Oct-08-2009

i just loved it! the author is truly gifted! - intheair - Mar-10-2010

Fantastic novel. Rich and darkly layered. The characters are realistic and flawed, trying to reconcile the world around them with their dreams of dragons, castles, and beautiful princesses. - MGD - Mar-11-2010

Halloween, and Kate is having a bad day, which can only get worseà until she meets a blue-eyed stranger who can save her. Or can she?
Truly a well written story. I enjoyed it very much. - Peggy - Nov 3rd, 2004

If I say you've probably never read a story like this one, it would likely be true. It is different, fresh, original, thoughtful, clever & provocative. Devize's dialogue is always a treat and plots interesting and diversified. As with her Misplaced People, she paints the backgrounds, scenery & characters in vivid color.I've already read this twice to make sure I didn't miss a thing. - O.Ger - Nov 5th, 2004

Great story. I have to admit that I knew how it was going to end once I figured out who Storey was but the story was so compellingly written that I stayed up late to finish reading it. It was sad yet at times Kate's thoughts made me smile. In a way, the story reminded me a little of the TV program Dead Like Me which I like a lot. While in reality, I wouldn't recommend Kate's ultimate choice, I do recommend this bittersweet Halloween story. - Gabsfan - Nov 17th, 2004

AMAZING! - Anonymous - Mar-25-2009

Amazing! A sweetly, sad/happy kind of tale...definitely worth reading! - Nicole - Jun-02-2009

oooh.. profoundly mesmerising.. at the end you keep wondering if the main character's thoughts were true, a self-profilling prophesy or just plain stupid.. loved it.. - xtra dog - Jun-09-2013

woww...i'm breathless especially the ending part. seriously this story is such a good reading. I feel what Katie felt after her miscarriage and than after years met someone unexpectedly... - Eden - Jun-09-2013

Still Life by Devize
Original / Uber | Modern | Alternative | Romance (alt) | Short Story - 19 pages | Finished | May-05
Cast: Van, Margaret, Fitzhugh
There are nights that change your life. This one includes piracy, captivity, private investigation and a very vivid imagination.
WoW! Beautiful story, so unique. feels like something's fluttering inside; it's the wonder and reverence i always feel when reading Devize's work :) it has me hooked. i've never read anything like it and that's saying something. also it's reassuring that it's just a beginning for this story (right?)thank you Devize for another Gem! - Katrina - May 10th, 2005

At the beginning of this story are words "There are nights that change your life......" Well, there are writers who enter your mind and heart, and Devize is one who infiltrates both of mine. The mini stories within the main have a common theme or thread that both consume your interest and reach inside of you.To say "Word Wizard" or "Mistress of Deception and Deliciously chosen descriptions of body, soul and settings" wouldn't be complimentary enough to this writer. Having read her full length novel, MISPLACED PEOPLE, the short story,THE OTHER SIDE, and now this shorter yet,STILL LIFE, I am taken in and taken to places & meeting characters that linger in one's mind. The versatility of her mind that spills over into her stories, characters & places is wonderfully fulfilling as you read fitting dialogue with bits of humor even in the middle of devastation at times. This is one author whose stories I read and then read again. STILL LIFE is anything you may think it is before you read it. But after reading it, you will realize the cleverness of the title and the mind that wrote it. It is a beautiful story! - O Ger - May 21st, 2005

Just... just go and read it! It's worth it. I hope the autor would grace us with more of her wonderful works. - Melusina - Dec-12-2006

An amazing story. One of my favorite shorts, don't hesitate to read this! - Jen - Dec-18-2006

on the way to another story I found this one. Poignant, draws you in. wonderfully put together. Enjoy - rleef - Mar-25-2009

Very well written. Poignant and bittersweet. Devize's stories are always powerful and full of imagery and great characters. Well worth reading. Excellent - Lyn B - Jun-09-2011
