Mel's journals written in the war years as she and Janice survived in Greece through the Nazi invasion.
Quite good. The combination of place, story, storytelling, all elevate this above the usual. - Anonymous - Sep-27-2006

I love the interwoven portions of Xenaverse with Covington/Pappas history and real history. This is fantastic, I can't wait to read the next part. - purplehawke - Jun-13-2007

I recently reread The Pappas Journals (1 and 2) and I am still blown away by the talent of Elaine Sutherland. I would have written her a personal note but I cannot find an updated email address.

The intense emotion that is conveyed through Mel's journal is jaw dropping. I was especially moved by Mel's interaction with Rommel and the sacrifices she made out of love for Janice. I would quote the paragraph that nearly overwhelmed me with its raw honesty but it would be too much of a spoiler. Why this story hasn't been rated/recommended more is beyond me.

If you are looking for a light-hearted, feel good story, this is not it. If you are looking for a straightforward, well-researched, no-holds-barred story about life during wartime with two of the Xenaverse's much loved characters, you should not pass this up. - Cheyne Curry - Oct-12-2013

While Mel and Janice are translating Gabrielle's scrolls in Greece, Mel is arrested and sent to a concentration camp where she records her daily life in a journal.
As good as the first in this series is, this surpasses it. This one is much sadder, given its contents, but is quite worth the read through and to the end. Both stories wrap history, philosophy, and Xena in a way that feels grounded and real, but also in a way that raises them well above ordinary. - Anonymous - Sep-27-2006

This is fabulous. For a part 2, it's definitely comparable to the first if not better. - purplehawke - Jun-13-2007

i love this series, Elaine if you ever read this i tried emailing you but the email address didn't work :( so i'll give a recommendation instead. yeah the second one is sad but its worth the read, you won't regret it. - d - Jul-25-2008

Absolutely fantastic. The depth of character development is refreshing, and the style of the author is very professional. Definitely one of the best Mel/Janice fics I've read in a while. I highly recommend that you read both of these. Be warned, however, that this story isn't exactly a light read. - Susan Lehmann - Mar-13-2010
