This was a very riveting story and very absorbing. The author takes you back to a time where we see how Xena survives being a warlord while carrying Solon and how hard she is on herself in relation to her army and what she expects of herself in the process; where she encounters acts of kindness, similar to what she will eventually find in her future with Gabrielle, and how at odds she is with it because to her, it's a sign of weakness even though in some way, she is drawn to it. This is not one of these 'romantic' warlord stories of Xena's past where she is always in control, always confident. This is a very conflicted Destroyer of Nations who is suffering in her anger and frustration. She seems unfulfilled and disappointed all the time. A good read with a perceptive analysis of who Xena was while she swept through Greece. - Karon Reiter - Jul-30-2011
