"Luke" Hamilton has always been sure that she'd never marry. She accepted that she would spend her life alone when she chose to live her life disguised as a man. After working in a brothel for three years, Nora Macauley has lost all illusions about love. She no longer hopes for a man who will sweep her off her feet and take her away to begin a new, respectable life. But now they find themselves married and on the way to Oregon in a covered wagon, with two thousand miles ahead of them.
Totally recommend this engrossing story. It is all good--people, plot, and pace. More! More! - MEG - Aug-14-2007

Marvellous. Solid writing, great characterization, tight grammar and spelling. This has all the signs of being an absolute epic. If you haven't started reading it yet... well, sorry.
Thanks, Jae, looking forward to the rest of the trip backwards. - k alexander - Aug-15-2007

Good story! Waiting for more. READ and ENJOY. - cam - Aug-15-2007

Amazing story, read it all night long and want more. - Anonymous - Aug-15-2007

Really enjoying this story. More please! - Gillian - Aug-15-2007

Yikes! Very good read. Non-typical, believable characters, realistic story line. Gives me the same warm fuzzy feeling as Anne Cameron's "The Journey". Just hope it's not months between updates. I don't know if I can wait that long. - badsquirrel - Aug-15-2007

Wonderful start to what will be an amazing story, the characters continue to grow on you as they change and mature through the story. Can't wait for the next installment! - Stephanie - Aug-15-2007

excellent!! I am a big fan of the old west and this story was one of the best i've read. Can't wait for the rest. - Anonymous - Aug-15-2007

This is a fantastic piece so far! Great characters, wonderful details, and a story that takes its time and allows the characters to slowly find their way to love and romance. I hope you continue!! - Anonymous - Aug-15-2007

This is one enjoyable read! I can't wait for the rest. - filfil - Aug-16-2007

Love this story! I love long romantic stories and this promises to be just that! - lmddixie - Aug-16-2007

I try as a rule not to read stories which are unfinished, but I am so very glad I made an exeption in this case. This story is a delight to read and I would recommend it very highly. - Ang - Aug-16-2007

Omg! This is the best western I have read in a long time. To be honest, I love it. I stayed up till 4am reading the first posting. I cant wait for more. I hope we see more from this bard. Damn good! - RCP - Aug-16-2007

This is a wonderful story and I can't wait for more parts. It reminds me of playing the game Oregon Trail but with women. - A.L. - Aug-16-2007

I have never been a fan of 'old west' stories until now! Amazing characters, a great plot filled with passion and just the right amount of suspence. I hope the author brings out the next installment real soon! Looking forward to it. - Barbd - Aug-18-2007

I was totally absorbed till I reached the end of the last part. Please please give us the next chapter. :)
It's written very well and I couldn't nearly stop in the early morning hours to get some sleep. - wolfy - Aug-18-2007

Jae writes an excellent story, well researched, with solid visualization of location and characters. Some idiomatic language issues, which is understandable from a writer who is not a native speaker of American English. Good use of suspense in developing the core relationship of the main characters and their personal dilemmas. I would recommend this story to anyone who enjoys historical lesbian romance. - DrDeany - Aug-18-2007

This story is amazingly well researched and written. But, what is even more impressive is the bard, Jae, isn't from the USA, and English is not the local language!!I guess their "World History" classes are more thorough than the USA's version. Not since reading Blayne Cooper's "Last Train Home", have I enjoyed every page of 'history' of the old west, and wished I'd been around to ride along, doin' the sidekick thing. With writing this good, I'll wake up with blisters on MY feet!!!!GO(west)JAE!!! - dez - Aug-18-2007

Well it is now 3am and I am just finished the reading. Wonderful!! This is honestly on of the best stories ever posted. And believe me I've read tons. Wonderful work Jae. I can't wait until you next post. - lrt - Aug-19-2007

wow...this story is amazing! it's really thought through, thought-provoking, realistic, beautiful and tender. i'm so glad i read it and hopefully will read more of it! Jae you are a very taented bard, brava :) - Kat - Aug-19-2007

I don't usually read a story before it is finished, but this one is highly recommended. I cannot wait to read the next parts..... - Anonymous - Aug-19-2007

I don't usually read a story before it is finished, but this one is highly recommended. I cannot wait to read the next parts..... - Anonymous - Aug-19-2007

What a fantastic story! Like many other readers, I don't normally read unfinished tales, but I couldn't resist after I read all the positive reviews. This story has adventure and romance, and it's all very well written. Can't wait for the next part! - Jen - Aug-19-2007

Could not stop reading was up til 2am reading it! Great storyline, don't pass this one up
- Norfin - Aug-19-2007

Most awesome! Jae has captured all the angst of this journey. Writing any historic period piece is an undetaking and Jae has managed to immerse my imagination into the 19th Century. I look forward to more from this author. - A.C. Henley - Aug-20-2007

I love this story! One of the best that I have read in a while. The writing is beautiful and the characters and storyline are so engaging. Can't wait for more! - dj - Aug-20-2007

most enjoyable must read story, looking forward to the next chapters. thank you. - Liz - Aug-22-2007

Wonderfully engaging story. I do wonder about the author's use of pronouns in regards to Luke. - Anonymous - Aug-22-2007

The history in this story is well researched and Jae is able to work it into this wonderful story. This amazing, beautiful tale is worth reading more than once. - CNS - Aug-23-2007

Excellent, excellent read. I very seldom start a story unless it's complete but I made an exception and so happy I did. I see the makings of a published book in this one! - Katelyn - Aug-24-2007

Best story I've read for some time. - Anon - Aug-25-2007

I love this story and I hope there's an update soon. You're a great writer Jae. Take care. - B - Aug-25-2007

I love this story and can't wait for an update. I already read it several times. so Jae concentrate to an update on this one and not to write an other story - Anonymous - Aug-26-2007

I didn't get one thing done this weekend because I couldn't stop reading this story. I can't wait to read what happens next!! - Deja - Aug-26-2007

awesome story. Just finished!! Would love to read more on Luke and nora. - Anonymous - Aug-27-2007

An excellent tale. A story that is simple in the sophistication of its characters. Luke and Nora are so real, the descriptions of their surroundings and life are beautifully spartan as to reflect the reality of the hard life they were living. I would love to read anything else this bard writes. A must read. - nondescriptone - Aug-29-2007

I lift my glass to raise a toast to Jae as well! This is by far one of the best stories I have ever read on or offline! I would highly recommend it! - Opus - Aug-30-2007

What a great story! I enjoyed it so much...I highly, more than highly, recommend it...

- Anon - Sep-01-2007

You are a good writer and your tale is well spun. Hat's off to this outstanding tale! Highly recommended as far as I'm concerned. - Whitecrow - Sep-03-2007

I noticed in the disclaimer for Backwards to Oregon, Jae mentions that English is not her first language. Honestly, you wouldn't know it unless you were looking for it. The story was marvelous, but it was her writing style that I found most intriguing. It reminded me of The Sun Also Rises. Well Done. This is not your average historical fiction. It's more like a liberated Willa Cather novel. Unless you find trans issues off-putting, you won't regret reading it. - Aubrey - Sep-10-2007

Awesome!!! One of the best I've read in a long time. Be prepared for a sleepless night, once you start this you can't stop. - Anonymous - Sep-13-2007

This was a wonderful story. Thanks so much for sharing with us. - Kali - Sep-14-2007

Wonderful story. I hope this one has a sequel. I want more. - SB - Sep-14-2007

Great work hate it when it ended a sequel wouldn´t be a bad thing. Worth it every sleppless hour. - Chris - Sep-15-2007

What a wonderful, well-crafted story this is. Even if you're not a fan of Western tales, you can't go wrong with this one. Definitely a 'page-turner'! What a great treat a sequel would be. :) - Niko - Sep-18-2007

One of the best Uber I've ever read so far ! Wonderful story, excellent characterization... you won't get bored anytime soon while reading this one :) Just perfect. Amazing - Gal - Oct-10-2007

I got hooked from the very first pages and couldn't stop reading! One of the best fanfics I've ever read and certainly one of the most original! I very strongly recommend it. - Elise - Oct-23-2007

I was just looking over some of the stories I've read and could not believe that I hadn't given due praise to this one. I read it when it started--and read it--and waited, with baited breath (believe me), for each next part. Anyone who has a taste for entirely and utterly fantastic Uber fic should read this story.

Read it! Now! - micah6 - Nov-15-2007

Really awesome story. Will definately keep in my personal archive - Emily. - wakingthedream@gmail.com - Dec-04-2007

There simply aren't enough good things to say about this story. I've read it more times than I can count. If this story isn't the Novel of The Year it would be highway robbery! - jaeygatsby - Dec-07-2007

the best story on the net, and gets better, buy it on audio MP3 from L-books .com - Lizzielee - Apr-05-2008

Love westerns and this is a good one. It is wonderful how Jae, who is not of the USA, still gets the flavor of the times. Enjoyed the journey of Luke and Nora very much. - rleef - Dec-12-2008

wonderful story! I bought and read this all today and it was worth the small amount i paid! - Anonymous - Aug-19-2009

A Great story that you MUST read.Wish there were more western stories like this one. - Anonymous - Aug-29-2009

I must have read this story 5 times by now - my all time favourite. The author announced that she will publish a full novel-length sequel at the end of 2010 - I can not wait. This is the story that made me read every available lesbian western. - Anja - Feb-26-2010

Is this a sight to read free stories or a place to advertise? Please remove a story of all it links to is a place to buy it. - SickNTired - Jan-29-2011

I have been coming to this site for quite awhile now, reading the deliciousness from the bards. I am usually pleasantly engaged and impressed by the level of talent seen clearly in the writings of so many. Lately, I have been coming across stories, with interesting teasers and a long list of recommendations. I get excited and click on the link to read the story, and it is no longer available to be read without purchasing the book. I am all for awesome stories being published and a well done to those authors who have had their talent brought to the next level. However, I find it is poor taste to leave the story teaser and all it's recommendations up on the site but to remove a link to read the story. I might be confused (and in that case, I'm sorry...), but isn't this site for people to come read FREE online fan-fiction and such?

On a side note: I did end up reading this story (no, I didn't buy the book...) and it is a great read. "Google" is your friend... to anyone else wanting to read the story online for free. :) - Anonymous - Mar-10-2012

Confession by Jae
Law and Order: SVU | Modern | Alternative | Drama | Very Short Story - 3 pages | Finished | Aug-07
Part 3 of a Series
Series List: Observation, Interrogation, Confession
The series are really short & sweet. But I know I've read them before on www.ralst.com and there is one itty bitty sentence at the end of the last one, which makes the story so much funnier... Lost or just new edition? - Mel - Aug-24-2007

I have read that story once before and have to recommend it. It is well worth a read and proves again that Jae is a very skilled writer. - filfil - Aug-27-2007

Very succinct and excellent prequel to Backwards to Oregon -- where it all began ... - Anonymous - Nov-18-2009

Nice story which I enjoyed immensely. It's one that I couldn't stop reading util I got to the end. Thanks so much Jae. - Sarah - Apr-02-2008

I certainly think that this is a briliant continuation of Conflict of Interest. I thoroughly enjoyed that, and this was just as good, if not better. I would have to say ... are we going to be hearing more about Cade and Laurie as well as Alex and Del? Thanks for a wonderful story! - Gwen - Apr-04-2008

Very good sequel to Conflict of Interest. On one hand I could not stop reading it fast enough and on the other I wanted it never to end. So I'm also wondering if their will be a sequel to the sequel.

Danke, Dale. - Dale - Apr-05-2008

Jae you are a wonderful story teller. Do not miss this, it is the read of the year. - lizzielee - Apr-05-2008

This was one of the best sequels written. - purplehawke - Apr-08-2008

Hi Jae,
I loved this story.
Cade was a wonderful addition. Her insecurities explained so much about Olivia's.
I've never read another SVU story that partnered Oliva and Alex with different people.Del seemed like a perfect match to Alex's personality.
My only problem with Del was not being able to get a mental picture of her.I kept trying to think of an actress that I could compare her to.
The conversations between the characters and the insights into their thinking process made them really come alive,at least for me.
You've got the gift.
Thanks again,Pat - Patricia iserman - Apr-09-2008

I love this story!! It is as good as if not better than Conflict of Interest. I couldn't stop reading till I reached the end and then I wanted more. I'm hoping this isn't the last that we've heard of these characters. If you haven't read it yet, do yourself a favor and do so as soon as possible. - Candice - Apr-10-2008

Absolutely wonderful! Rich and full characters, humor, warmth, sex, suspense, romance. This story is the total package. - Anonymous - Apr-13-2008

Alright Jae. You're too good for your own good. I enjoyed this story as much as you probably thought we would. Great characters, great plot. Obviously, it begs for a sequel, so get writing...Mic - Micah6 - Apr-28-2008

Another gripping, romantic story by Jae. What a talented author! I'm always overjoyed when I see Jae's name on a new work. - VS Tellefson - Apr-30-2008

Well, I read this in one day just like CONFLICT OF INTEREST. I was so, so pleasantly surprised to come across this sequel. I was hoping & wishing there would be a sequel. The new characters are fantastic. I hope you seriously consider continuing, it's to good to end. I am a die hard xena fan, but Conflict of interest has been one of the few stories i've read over 3x. I know have this new one to read over again. lol. Thank u for gifting us with your talent. I so love Liv & Dawn. - Brighteyez - Jun-01-2008

Brilliant! Just ... brilliant! I thoroughly enjoyed Conflict of Interest and this is as good as, if not better, than that. Any chance of a sequel? - Gwen - Jun-05-2008

found this story on the link, purchased it and it was ok, however I would have loved to read it when it was an Olivia/Alex/SVU story. Maybe next time. - Angelicrainbw - May-31-2009

First you have to buy Conflict of Interest and read it. Then you need to buy Next of Kin. You will not be dissapointed. Now we just need another one. - cpo - Nov-03-2010
