We have all been forced into making decisions we regret at one time or another in our lives. Most of the time it's due to a mistake. Sometimes it's because we don't see any other alternative. Seldom is it that we are faced with choosing between betrayal of a good friend's trust, or the possibility of the enslavement of all mankind. No one should ever have to make that choice. However, as Xena's luck would have it, she was forced to make this decision more times than she could remember. She could always see what the outcome of those decisions would be, but with each one she knew she had no choice. This is a story of a personal regret, one that will forever leave its scar on Xena soul for all eternity.

Gabrielle has often laid awake all night pondering her best friend's past. Every so often Xena would say something, or just have a look on her face that would hand her little clues, like grains of sand, for her to gaze at. We all have things in our past that we're not proud of, and Xena is no exception. Seeing an old friend, or smelling a childhood scent brings memories crashing back into our lives, like ocean waves washing up upon the shore. Xena and Gabrielle had touched many lives in their adventures together. This is a story about one such life. John, a wandering soul himself, recounts the time when he first met them. For just a moment, he and Gabrielle caught a glimpse past Xena's beautiful blue eyes and into the darkness of her soul.
