| This story is actually part one of two parter - the sequel to this is 'Dark Mistress'. 'Alternatives' holds a special place in my heart as it was the first story I ever read that dealt with the sexual power games between Xena and Gabrielle that I found fabulously arousing and which became a genre in its own right throughout Xena fandom, mostly notably under the 'Conqueror' stories although Xena's warlord inclination to take by force what isn't willingly given to her, I think, is always below the surface within her tormented soul. She is fundamentally a very dark and dangerous individual. In this story, I imagine this is how Xena would have behaved had Rob been able to air this show on cable and had an X rating like he did with Spartacus. What makes this story special is that the author didn't focus on the sexual machinations only, but tries to explain why Xena feels this way and why Gabrielle allows Xena to dominate her, even while she struggles to understand her own compulsion toward Xena's darkness. Perhaps it's all just a ruse to get down to the doing the nasty, but it works for me. I also feel this genre is probably closer to how a real life Xena might behave given the fact so much of our current attitudes toward sex is so religiously dictated unlike the ancient Greeks who were far more immodest and freer when it came to sex than us. If you're into some hot D/s story telling, I highly recommend this, although some might find it a bit dated. - kazy - Dec-06-2012 |
