Queen Gabrielle is called to the Amazon village for a grueling series of negotiations that might be hurt by Xena's presence so the warrior decides to spend the time visiting her family in Amphipolis.
A nice change of pace for Xena, visting her family while Gabrielle battles with the Amazon's. The writing is balanced and accurate for both Xena and Gabrielle. A good read. - Corbeau's Voyager - Oct 6th, 2003

The only fan fiction writer that I have ever asked to marry me. LOL. Missy has a way of writing Xena and Gabrielle. She had taken a different path from the series since "The Quest". I'm so thankful that she did because for all of those weekly Xena withdrawals, then those re-runs months, the whole fifth season, and now the end of the series, her stories have kept the Xena and Gabrielle saga alive for me more than any other classic stories. What I love most about Missy's stories are the relationships between the characters. That's not to say that her stories lack action, heck no, but Xena and Gabrielle could be picking their teeth and I would like to read about it in a Missy story. Thank you - BYL - Mar-14-2006

Run, don't walk to this story. This is one of the best storiesout there, as well as all of missy's other stories. If you decide to read this, it will one of the best decisions you will make today. - Emma - May-11-2009

One of the first Author stories I ever read when joining the Net was a Missy Good story. A wonderful writer Missy brings warmth, love, adventure, Evil and true love into all her stories. Whether it be Classic Xena and Gabrielle to her Uber adventures Missy shines. If you read one thing this New Years Eve read this ladys work. You will not be disappoint. - Daydreams - Dec 31st, 2002

Melissa Good is an exceptional talent. She magically weaves her tales leaving the reader breathless, excited, glad, sad and completely in love with the characters. She is a multi-karat diamond...Only one problem with Champion - Can't get linked to Chapters 10 & 11. - Anonymous - Jul 17th, 2003

Loved, just loved this whole story. I have read from "A Warrior By Any Other Name" to "Champion". Melissa shows a great relationship with X&G. Fantanstic storylines!! I hope that Melissa has not ended this saga. I know you want to write other fanfic. But fans like me want to know what happens with Dori, how is she going to grow up?? Will she be like Xena or Gabrielle?? Is Xena a demi-god and does that mean she is immortal, where would that leave Gabrielle. Thank you for these great stories, I hope you continue with it. - Bratisme - Nov 1st, 2003

I could write pages of praise about this writer but let me simply say...another fantastic story by the champion of bards!!! Brava Melissa!!! - JC - Jul-22-2007

Very creative...this author inspires me to write! - bluebutterfly - May-03-2010

Melissa Good is an extraordinary writer, with a brilliant imagination and an uncanny grasp of the nature of the main characters' relationship, which she keeps firmly in the center of all of her narratives. "Champion" is a wonderful story that explores the role family and community is supposed to have in keeping us safe and secure in a world that can be a lot like paradise - until, in our pursuit of power and our desire to inflict our personal ideology on others, we choose to fill it with cruelty and pain. - xnalvs - May-03-2010

Melissa Good is one of my favorite bards. I've loved everything she has written ! This story was intense and fast paced. The whole soulmate series is a MUST read. Very, Very Good ! - Anonymous - May-12-2010

Gabrielle and Xena have a cult to deal with, and family and friends to rescue, but with Gabrielle's pregnancy bloomin, Amazons bickering and a trade fair just waiting to begin, the circle of life may be closing in a little too tightly for the heroes!
Pure poetry. What a fantastic read! - Anonymous - Jun-29-2008

Outstanding plot, charactors, so much in this story it is unbelievable and so well but together. Classic Xena at its best. If you enjoy romance, Amazons, battles, Warlords, and one cute Baby to add to the fun this is the story for you. - Daydreams - Dec 31st, 2002

This story is absolutely wonderful. The author really brings Xena and Gabrielle to life, flaws and all. I have read all the stories in the 'Journey Of Soulmates' series, and this is a must read for all classic Xena fans. It has just about EVERYTHING in there, and having just finished it, I have to say it blew me away! - Ang - Dec 15th, 2004

Anything by Melissa is not just Good it is the Best!! Dark Comes The Morning gets my highest praise!!! - JC - Jul-22-2007

Oustanding entry in an outstanding series. Don't believe the page count listed here, though. This epic novel is way longer than 300 pages. Give yourself some time to get through this one, cause once you start, you won't want to put it down. - Anonymous - Jul-11-2008

Miss Good is truly a master at creating battle scenes. this entry is not to be missed. I really enjoyed the Amazon mix. As long as this story was, I was at a lost when it ended. Spectacular. - slotfever - Jul-18-2008

It's definitely my favourite so far. I was overwhelmed with the previous parts - too many 'smirks', 'grins' and 'chuckles', too much cuddling and 'mushy stuff'. But this one is really, really good, and I'm so glad that M. Good did not give up on the idea of an evil stone, it was my favourite plot in all of the stories. This one restored my faith in the series, just when I started considering giving up reading it. So - good job. - A. - Oct-22-2013

Xena and Gabrielle try to rebuild their relationship after the events of the rift.
One of the best rift stories out there...but also one of the best Xena stories period. This one stands the test of time, as I have re-read it at least 6 times and each time get something new out of it. The slow healing process that Xena and Gab go through emotionally seems a lot more grounded in reality than some of the other rift stories out there (and episodes in the show) where they go for an unlikely "quick fix." Highly, enthusiastically reccomended!! - Lindsey D - Dec 15th, 2004

I really love the Journey of Soulmates series, & Darkness Falls is the best rift story I've ever read. The long slow healing process of Xena & Gabrielle is much more realistic than the quick fix the series laid on us. Melissa Good is a great writer and her works are riveting. I've read the Soulmates series at least 10 times over the last 4 years and Shadow of the Soul of the Merciless Series 8 times over the last 3 years. I'm glad the legend lives on through Ms. Good. - Draco - Jul-10-2006

I highly recommend all of Melissa Goods work and Darkness Falls is one of her best!! This story moved me deeply and continues to move me each time I read it. What wonderful talent and how blessed we are to have her in the Xenaverse!!! - JC - Jul-22-2007

WOW Great!! I love this story - Nihla - Jun-03-2008

Darkness Falls is one of my all time favorites of the Soulmate Series. It really touched me. Melissa Good is a fantastic author and I recommend all her stories. Well worth your time to read. - x/g fanfic fanatic - Jul-15-2010

DO NOT MISS THIS ONE. This story really goes through all those problems and insecurities they might have gone through after The Rift. It does offer a much more realistic solution. Brace yourselves, it's a dark one. - Anonymous - Apr-25-2012

what a wonderful story
Great job of writing - réveuse - Mar-27-2015

I can't get to chapter 3. I tried every combination I could think of to no avail. These stories always cheer me up, like visiting family and friends I haven't seen in a while. It's a circle of love that Melissa Good started and why it's like coming home every time I read it. The books were out of sync so I always come back here. It's been a privilege to have near. I've read them to my whole family kids and all, it's very sophisticated, raw and pure so that all ages can enjoy. What a gift. Thank you Melissa Good! There's a place in my heart where these treasures reside. Forever. - Merpup - Apr-04-2015

I'm really enjoying this series. The only thing I feel confused about is that I thought Dar's boss' name was Les not Alastair, not sure where that name came from. - Anonymous - Apr-10-2015

I've never felt a need to rate anything by Melissa Good. But I was recently reminded that the only thing these authors are asking for is a word of thanks. I consider MG the gold star standard. Lots of twists and turns and threading plots through the eye of a needle. Very impressive writing with an equally impressive cast of characters. I would have much preferred far less use of expletives.. Melissa Good tells stories that anyone can read and therefore can be placed within easy reach on the bookshelf, this one has to be placed higher.. I have read every book by this author so far and this lives up to all of her other work. I just hope that Dev and Jess will get as many sequels as Dar and Kerry have gotten. - Anonymous - Dec-29-2012

Thank you so much for sending me the link to complete this story, really appreciate it..now my day is complete as well. Excellent novel, highly recommended.

What a fantastic story by the one and only Melissa Good! I've read this story a few times and each time, Jess and Dev pull me in, making me forget I already know the ending. The story itself is a journey of evolution - getting to know oneself and about life's greatest gift, love all while being wrapped in a fantastic plot. Run, don't walk and read this!! - Stacia - Jan-01-2013

How to explain my reaction to this book...? It's hard to articulate such profound affection for the characters that the author so fully developed. Or the visceral excitement from the storyline. That said, I truly admire your sheer genius born of your imagination Ms. Good. This was such an impressive manuscript, that I felt transcended genre! Thank you for this gift. - Jstew - Jan-17-2013

A really great story that can stand on its own. I am greatly anticipating the next book in this series.

I found a great synopsis on AUXIP http://ausxip.com/fanfiction/mgood/jess-and-dev/index.html

The Story of Humanity: The Jess and Dev Tales is set in the near future post apocalyptic - the earth has been devastated by weather. Human society on the planet is reduced to fighting for survival over seaweed and scraps. Jesslyn (Jess) Drake is a warrior for that time - an agent who works for one of two 'sides' (think cold war) and is sent into conflict to steal scientific secrets or otherwise prevent that 'side' from making advances that would let them prosper. There are no good or bad guys.
Dev is Biological Alternative, set 0202-164812, instance NM-Dev-1 is a type of human being developed on a space station in orbit who can accept direct brain programming to suit them for a specific job and is the first of her kind to be made into an agent to join this side. Has a somewhat slave status and no one really wants them around but is given to Agent Drake who is arm twisted into giving it a try.

Outstanding!!! How I wish I hadn't read it yet so I could read it all again with virgin eyes. This is story telling at it's finest...my highest praise and recommendation!!! - JC - Mar-01-2013

This is a fascinating look into the future.
Hopefully, these characters will make themselves be heard by this talented author in the very near future. - Pat - Apr-10-2013

I had begun this story several times and was not sure if it would be for me. I finally made it past the first chapter. I am so glad I read on. The story is wonderful and the character development perfect. I couldn't stop reading! Thank you & i hope you return with a sequel. - Anonymous - May-31-2013

I have read this novel *three* times: first, biting my nails each month waiting for the next installment, and twice since then - gorging myself on a beautifully written sci-fi adventure saga. This post-apocalyptic novel is a compelling page turner and an edge of the seat ride. The romance between Jess and Dev is sweet and develops in parallel to the characters' emotional intimacy. I admit, I like more intimate detail (think Sharon L. Bowers) than you'll find in Melissa Good's books, but the riveting plots and flawless suspense [almost] take the edge off my vicarious sexual frustration. I couldn't get enough of this story. Partners is 830 pages long and waaaaaay too short. NOTE: Check out Calli's artwork for Partners - it's a great cover for your ebook! - Brandyn - Nov-25-2013

Great story, love the science fiction aspect. Full character development. Engaging, entertaining and hard to put down. Thank you Melissa Good! - Aerynmet - Jan-21-2014

This is simply amazing storytelling! - Anonymous - Mar-18-2015

Melissa Good's stories are totally awesome.- 12/28/15 - Deb - Dec-28-2015

Great plot and characters. Deeply moving. Check 2nd part in "Of Sea and Stars" (http://www.merwolf.com/ffiction.html#jd). Lovely too. Thank you so much for these masterpieces, Mel Good. - Anonymous - Jan-19-2016

I started and then stopped this tale several times. I did finally read it and have since returned to reread several times. Incredible story! You won't be disappointed. - Anonymous - Sep-02-2016

I've read this before and just now read it again. I never want it to end. A wonderful tale that I am sure I'll be back to revisit. - Niyah - Sep-10-2016

I'm sure all of us feel it's nearly unnecessary to praise this writer. Oh, well. I will. I hated the first part, because I hated Xena's return to violence, but--it was a fantastic read. A real page turner (browser refresher).

I enjoyed it--and felt it was a great addition to what she had already added to the Conquerer.

If you haven't read it, read it...

some of the most stimulating battle scenes i've read. amazingly fantastic and clever warfare. Absolutely brilliant! - eli - Jan-09-2008

My second reading of the story and finding it as great if not more so than the first read thru! An amazing story not to be missed with a lot of cleverly planned battle scenes and adorable interaction between Xena and Gabrielle!! - Anonymous - Jan-10-2008

Good Serie and an amazing characterization of Xena and Gabrielle. I like the dark humour of this Merciless's warrior. It make laugh and it compell me to read to get more... To think that I stumble for pure case on these works... lucky me... - kky - Dec-03-2009

I loved this story. A great job writing it - sassy123 - Sep-15-2010

Loved the first one in this series too! Melissa always spins and weaves a wonderfully thoughtout, delightful tail and this one certainly delivers. - Stacia - Sep-22-2010

Another gem from Missy. Her Xena is very believable. Though deeply in love with Gabrielle she cannot & will not forsake the violence that made her a ruler. Only with Gabrielle willl she allow a softer side to show.Lila - Anonymous - Nov-12-2010

As much as I enjoyed the first in this series, I enjoyed this one even more. Melissa brings such a light and insight to both characters, but especially Gab. Watching Gab find herself in this and stand up to Xena in her darkness was just inspiring. Walk, don't run to this series if you're a Conqueror fan. - Stacia - Apr-21-2013

Missy gives us The Conquer in her own style and it is a joy to read. - Daydreams - Dec 31st, 2002

This has to be the best conquer story ever written. She paints an excellent picture of a ruling Xena. One who will not apologize for her actions, but instead explains the reasons behind them. Cabrielle in her remarkable yet subtle way gets Xena 'The Merciless' to see that there are other ways to obtain loyalty And to know love. The depth of each character is endless. One can only hope for a sequel.A MUST READ & HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!! - Chris L. - Jan 8th, 2003

BRAVA! BRAVA! For Melissa's first Conqueror story this is incredible! The interaction between Xena the Queen and her slave Gabrielle are wonderful. In places it even tugs at your heart. If you've never read one of Melissa's stories shame on you..this one is a must read! - Jbamazon - Jan 16th, 2003

Thanks for continuing to write good xena stories. I especially love conqueror series. - Anonymous - Oct-04-2007

This is one of the best conqueror stories I've read. It's a trilogy so better saddle up for a long ride. But - it's totally worth it, in fact you won't want to come down. Melissa has a quirky sense of humor which she sprinkled all over the story. Lots of depth and emotion which touches the soul. Definitely recommended. - xiu - Feb-10-2008

What can I say, this is a THE wonderful bard Melissa Good...
This is a fun read, ya heare for the long rite since this is a part of a trilogy, but this is Melissa Good so ya can't go wrong with it.
Best conqueror story - Callisto - Feb-10-2008

This is the first "Conquerer" story that I have read, and I was surprised at how much I enjoyed it. I didn't expect to like it, and I ended up loving it. It (and the sequel) is a compelling tale, and the change in the characters (both Xena and Gabrielle) by then end is both amazing and completely believable - not an easy task at all. Well done!! - jaeygatsby - Feb-15-2008

I must say that I love this particular "CONQUEROR" series. Xena is bloodthirsty, however she is not abusive to Gabrielle. She is almost goofy in a way that all of us are when we first fall in love with someone and faces the same insecurities. She questions herself along the way, and somehow she finds her path and faces the consequences whether good or bad.
Melissa is truly the "Goddess of Bards"!!! - K. Lewis - Feb-17-2008

Alot of stories become predictable... I didn't know where this was going until I was half way through it. Great Read. Sequel???? - Happycricket - May-15-2008

I can't open part 4 of this story! please PLEASE help me complete this story the story is really great, its a must - !! - Sep-23-2008

Great and well-thought Conqueror story! The characters are really awesome and not like in the most Conquerors I have read. These are more like original Xena and Gabrielle, just with different past which influenced them.
Awesome read, don't miss it! This is one of the best XTC stories!

Love this story. Great job. - sassy123 - Dec-03-2010

It cannot be said often enough. Melissa Good is one of the best writers out there. Her stories brought me into the Xena fiction world and not a week goes by when I don't re-read something of hers. If you, for some strange reason, have yet to read anything written by her... Do yourself a favor, read something of hers now. Be it her Journey of Soulmates series, the Dar & Kerry stories, the Jess and Dev tales or this, the beginning of her Xena the Merciless series. Shadow of the soul is an excellent piece, very deserving of a 10. - Laziel - Feb-28-2011

Really good, different take on the conqueror genre. - Silver - Jul-14-2011

xena at her worst and still she comes out on top.. very well written and very funny at times.. xena's reaction when lastay told her of his wife's condition made me laugh out loud.. - xtra dog - Feb-20-2012

I'm not normally a fan of conqueror stories, but because Melissa Good wrote it, I gave it a try. I have NO idea why I was worried I'd like it but WOW!!! Even if you're not a fan of conqueror stories, give this one a try. You'll fall in love with Gab and the Conqueror. - Stacia - Jan-01-2013

I'm not normally a Conqueror story fan but this one really pulls the reader in and shows that The Conqueror can be loving (with Gab and her soldiers only) while still being a bad A to everyone else. Melissa brings her wonderful talents to the darker side of Xena fanfiction and this one is a definite must for XWP fans. - Stacia - Apr-21-2013

It all started with Tropical Storm and now Storm Surge! I have loved following these two ladies in all there adventures. Missy brings them to life in her books! I hope she is still writing about Dar and Kerry when they are old and grey You get 5 stars from me.***** - sandya - Apr-15-2008

One of my marked favorites is merwolf updates and has been for 7 years. I have followed each of Dar and Kerry's stories one update at a time then gone back and read them completely, several times. With Storm Surge, Melissa shows the personal growth of Dar and Kerry as adversity only tightens the bonds and highlights the strenths brought forth in the development of all her characters. This is a reflection of the strengths shown by our nation following 9/11. As always, Great job Melissa. (please write faster-lol) - nljacksn - Apr-15-2008

This writer is in a class of her own!!! The story of Dar Roberts and Kerry Stuart captured my heart form the very beginning. I simply cannot get enough of these two characters and Storm Surge does not disappoint! - JC - Aug-17-2008

Missy please, never, ever, ever, stop writing about Dar's and kerry's life,I know that's a lot to ask but there's just sooo much more for you to tell us,and so much more for us to enjoy. ..Your characters are so good that I feel like if I know them for real, like they are an old couple of friends whose life I know everything about, and I never wish for their story to end. - Anonymous - Sep-02-2008

****spoiler alert****
Again good series but I'm confused with inconsistencies. I thought kyle was killed when he tried to take Kerry back home. That was when Dar discovered her dad was alive but in this story he acts like he doesn't know who kyle is. Very good writing but details like this should have been double checked. - Anonymous - Apr-16-2015

This is Missy Good's first Uber story - soon to be published as a book - and what a story it is. Set in Missy's home town of Miami, it introduces Dar Roberts, executive VP of a big IT company, a ruthless corporate shark used to doing the company's dirty work. While acquiring a small firm, her path crosses that of Kerry Stuart, an idealistic junior manager who has finally found her way in life after struggling for independence from her family. However, the niche in life which she worked so hard to establish is about to be destroyed by Dar and her company. Missy offers us a beautiful and romantic tale with in-depth characterizations painting a vivid picture of a modern day version of Xena and Gabrielle. One of the best Uber stories around - don't miss it!
The very first time I read this story, I was blown away. This is a story that will have you reading it over and over again. I should know, I read it four times!!! - Anonymous - Oct 2nd, 2002

um...um..i am absolutely speechless 'cause if i start to talk, i'll just rattle away never to be seen again... that is probably why under TROPICAL STORM fo g's sake there are no comments - just rating, cuz there are really NO COMMENTS - EVERYONE IS SPEECHLESS!!! thank God (or muse) there are sequels, i couldn't let go of these characters. this bard is THE MUSE. THIS is real, so real you cry, laugh, clap, dance. if you are still here, don't listen to my babbling, GO ON!! READ IT!!! NOW!!! (why are there only 6 points rating!!?? the story is sooo far above) - Katrina - Dec 3rd, 2003

Thank you God, a woman who can write a good plot, brilliant characters, and even has good grammar and punctuation!!I didn't expect to like these stories, but they are very charming, and VERY well written. Thanks Melissa - Trin - Jan 5th, 2004

Melissa Good is a fine gift to fanfiction. I am so happy that someone of her skill has taken the time to write these brilliant stories. It only shows the love Melissa has for the characters and the world she has created. Dar and Kerry (and every other character)are multifaceted and polychromatic. They are tangible and real, just as their love for one another. They embed themselves into your psyche, it's inevitable! Melissa's descriptions are visually rich and satisfying. The very present erotic moments are handled in a tactful, gentle and "just enough" manner. The dialogues are the best I have ever read. Nothing feels forced. The story flows and the characters flow with it. Everything happens at the right moment. If I could only read one fanfiction author, it would be Melissa Good. I've read them all: Tropical Storm, Hurrican Watch, Eye of the Storm, Tropical High, and I just finished reading Terrors of the High Seas today, after rereading the previous 2 or 3 times. After reading Tropical Storm you will feel the need to glue yourselves to Dar and Kerry for the rest of their lives... But Melissa has written just the right number of sequels. At the end of Terrors of the High Seas, you will feel that need delightfully sedated from knowing that Dar and Kerry have reached closure in the most outstanding aspects of their separate lives. From then on, they will be together forever, and prepared to face the future come what may. - Nightsbane - Feb 12th, 2005

That was stupid. I can't decide how much Melissa writes. Keep writing, Melissa. I will never get tired of Dar and Kerry. - Nightsbane - Feb 25th, 2005

I keep going back to these series because it's just amazing...YOU MUST READ this!!!!I love Dar and Kerry....I never get tired of them....I want more.... - Lucian - Mar-21-2010

Melissa Good is an excellent writer - all of her stories are wonderful reads. But the Dar and Kerry series is a total blast, especially if you work in IT for a living. Dar and Kerry are styled after Xena and Gabrielle, but they live in the here and now in Miami. The first one in the series, Tropical Storm, caused me to pull my first all-nighter since college. Great stuff! - xnalivs - Apr-27-2010

Missy Good's stories should not be missed. Fullstop. I won't go on here telling how great her work is. Because it is. Also, definitely look up her new series called "Partners" (not yet(?) listed here), it is worth a peek and more. - wt-ger - Mar-14-2011

Amazing story - Twitt - Sep-12-2011

Thank you so very much Mielissa Good!!! It's a corner of happiness I am so grateful to know.

How to I rate Spice? There is a lot of spice in these stories, subtle, sexy, chills and flutter spice; spice you can feel and savor, so I'm putting a 10 for Spice Index. Maybe it can be renamed Real Spice Index... - Teresa - Sep-28-2016

Rescuing a creature from certain death at the hands of a mob, Xena and Gabrielle offer to escort him home to his people.
This is where it all begins. Is there anybody left who doesn't know this series? If you don't, this story begins not long after the events depicted in Destiny and The Quest. Missy's depictions of Xena and Gabrielle are so well written and fleshed out, that it is her characterizations that I see as canon. Make sure you have a comfortable chair before you start this story, because the whole series flows from one story to the next. - Michelle - Feb-12-2009

This is the first fanfiction story I ever read, and it's one that I keep coming back to. I love the characterization and the world created within this series. - BardGirl - Mar-20-2009
