I love "what if" stories and this is a very good one. As you can well imagine, based on the teaser, Xena has slipped into utter despair after losing Gabrielle from her wounds in the episode, "Is There a Doctor in the House?" and it's the kind of hopelessness that is so bleak and so sorrowful, that you wish the Gods would take pity on her wretchedness and just give the girl back to her - but that's not what this is about. This is about a Xena who can only see her worth and her happiness and her meaning through the eyes of the one she loves and when Gabrielle dies, she can't see anything or feel anything anymore. I know a lot of people don't see that kind of a Xena, who would ever succumb to that sort of emotional paralysis forever, that she's too strong and would eventually carry on. While that could very well be true, I also think there's a part of Xena that I can see slipping into a life of listless apathy. Regardless, this story very effectively creates a very somber and grim tone of a woman who is totally undone and will not let go of her affliction. Very well executed. - kazy - Aug-04-2011
