Nothing Ventured, Nothing Gained by Tonya Muir
Xena | Alternative | Drama | Short Story - 39 pages | Finished | Jan-99
Cast: Gabrielle, Argo, Tobias, Lyceus, Maphias

Xena chooses to live out her wish for a Warrior Princess-free world, which the Fates granted her in the episode REMEMBER NOTHING. In a beautifully ironic, often wrenching role reversal, she becomes intimately closer to the ôalternateö Gabrielle, yet fears betraying the lost soulmate who now exists only in Xena's dreams. - ûIseQween@aol.com
absolutley fantatic. I have not read anything that interested me this much in a long time. I sat at my computer and read every bit. Sometimes tears made it hard to read. Please write some more along this line this is absolutley the most fantastic subject around now.Thank you so much for writing this. - Donna - Jan 20th, 2003

Beautiful story, I also cried my way through it. Sadly, when I searched for some more of this ladys works, I discovered a memorial website for her. Sadly for all of us, she has passed away from cancer. More tears. - Stephanie - Feb 27th, 2003

Simply amazing..what a tale! - Alicia - Dec 21st, 2003

I felt this story touching my heartstrings. I laughed and cried and lost myself in the words. I think this is a well-written legacy for the author, and a gift to all Xena fans. Thank you. - Moregan25 - Jan 6th, 2004

Really beautifully written. Even though I think that especially Xena's "change" of feeling could have been more elaborated (I hope that's the right word!). :-) - The Fic Addict - Jan 4th, 2005

I was expecting another average X/G slashfic. Instead, i got the most amazing surprise of my life. This is by far, the GREATEST and most amazing fic i have ever read, throughout the Xenaverse. A fic has never brought me to tears before, this one did, however. I am very saddened to hear that Tonya has since passed away, as i would have liked to let her know how her story touched my heart, and soul. God bless, you truly captured the spirit of both Xena and Gabrielle. I strongly reccomend EVERY Xena fan read this. If you are not a fan of Subtext, read it anyway. There is so much more to this story. so so so much more. Thank you. - Penstarr - Jan 22nd, 2005

I read a great deal of fanfic, almost as a hobby. I gain a broad perspective on this kind of work and i've come to realise there is a huge range of quality as well as general content. Coming upon this story was nothing special, i was browsing and it looked intriguing. I have read a piece about an alternative life initiated by 'Remember Nothing' but compared to this it was dust in the wind. This piece is by far the most intriguing, well-paced, exciting and also heart wrenching piece of fanfiction i have read to date. And that's out of A LOT of stories!! I have no doubt that if this was a published piece of writing, available to buy, it would almost certainly be on the best-seler list. All I can say is thankyou, you managed to stop me in my tracks and i couldn't get this out of my head for days. Magnificent. - Amy - Jan-28-2007

There are only a few who by the sweetness of their words make me weep. You are in good company, Tonya. I hope it is true that you might hear my thoughts - you have given us a gift, gorgeous and moving, simply sublime. Thank You. - 3creeks - Jun-05-2007

An oldie but a goodie. All Tonya Muir's works are (in my humble opinion) superb and are a perfect study in fanfic writing. Go on, treat yourself - oh and you may need a few Kleenex for this one in particular. RIP Tonya and thanks for the legacy of your wonderful stories. - anex - Aug-19-2007

This is another of those examples where the fiction is actually better then the episode that it is based upon.
I dare anyone to read this and not be moved. - Kez - Oct-13-2008

This is actually finished though it is labeled unfinished. And I highly recommend this fic. It is very well written and will tug on your heart strings. - Anonymous - Oct-15-2008

this was so magnificent. no other fan fiction has made me cry like this one, and it was so refreshing. this is a beautiful representation of Xena and Gabrielle's characters (especially if they had been in a relationship) - Chow - Jun-03-2009

this story is beautifully written. it is bittersweet, soul searing; deep with love. angst by the buckets. the characters stay with you long after the last word is read. - kc - Oct-31-2010

What a beautiful story. I was not expecting it, honestly. I read a LOT of Xena fan fiction and very rarely (if ever) give a 10, but this got one. It's one of those stories that stays with you long after you've read it. It's perfect. - Whitney D. - Apr-07-2012

I'm agreeing with the other review where fanfic is indeed better than the episode. In this case 10x better. I liked seeing how Xena became to understand what it must be like for the real Gabrielle to deal with her. I just think the end is missing another "scene" between our beloved characters. How cool would that have been...two "first times" rolled in to one story. Anyways this was a fantastic read. - BigZee - May-21-2013

very nice reversal of roles.. i just don't get the end..
***SPOILER ALERT*** why, after her epiphany, would she wait for 3 years to confess?? all the missed chances!! - xtra dog - Jun-10-2013
