What is Your Pet Peeve?

I agree.. I am 46 years old. I am barely able to text people. I still type out the words. When I receive a response I feel it my duty to adjust to text language. BUT not when I am READING a story. If and when we get so lazy as to write fiction, novels ect in some sort of weird techie short hand well then the ART of story telling will be greatly diminished... SADLY!

Close window.

UR2rite! I've received smses from my young cousins where I've found myself turning my head in all directions (as if I were a dog hearing a weird noise... or anybody watching a porn film) to try and find the meaning behind the mess. What fascinates me is that the netspeak phenomenon is one used to cut down on time, and yet 40% of the time the mangled word is longer - and harder to type. Observe "hawt", for instance. Terminal coolness has reached a new low. And I'm not nearly old enough to be a fuddy duddy, but I am. So thr.

I am well K, I spent the morning at the Beach the waves were quite large and a sight to see. But the Sun was shinning and it was a lovely day.. Going back on the morrow.

I just returned from seeing Clash of the Titans. I enjoyed it very much. The Story is a bit different from the 1981 version for those of you who were around way back then to have seen it. Production values and Special Effects were quite nice. Acting is Good, adventure moved along quite well. Anyway with out giving it away .. Go see it!!

Rio

I agree with both of these...Sadly, I tend not to read stories that don't have a teaser, sometimes I can find one written in the reviews and then I'm all fine and dandy. If not, I tend to not read them; although, if it's by an author whose stories I have read before and liked, I will at least put them in my "All Unread" folder in my bookmarks to consider reading at a later date when I have hit a lull in current unread fiction.

That whole character explaining to another character thing...that annoys me. (I have also, unfortunately, come across this in a published series. They explain what happened in previous books as if the current book is not a continuance of the previous books. If that were the case, it would not be qualified as a series, and would, most likely, not involve the events of the previous 4 or some odd books.) But anyhow, when I read a story where a character explains to another character what just happened, I feel it is something the author has done for their own benefit...meaning, they had probably taken a longer than normal break between the current part and the recounted part, and they just want to make sure everyone, including themselves, know what's going on. (even though it is in the same chapter/part as the event(s) that is explained so theoretically, you would be reading it within minutes, or up to a day or so, within each other)

If a story has horribly bad grammar, to the point where there isn't even any sentence structure or "" around dialogue, more than likely I won't even bother reading it. I came across one story (classic xena), not on this site, where it looked like someone took a bunch of chats or texts or something and put them in "story" form. The flow of the story was bad as well, the Xena and Gabrielle realized and fell in love with each other within a few hours...completely implausible. Needless to say, I never did finish it...don't even remember it now, in fact.

Just a quick little one...when authors write ubers with 'Xena' and 'Gabrielle' as the character names, in a modern day setting, in a story that doesn't have them be immortal or whatnot....not to be mean to anyone, but this annoys me...

Edit: Another quick little one...when, in the Mel/Janice stories, the author refers to Janice as 'Covington' when not in dialogue...

Also, in reference to the 'unfinished' story pet peeve...I agree. Only so far as to where I am reading a story or a series (as I am still somewhat patiently waiting for another story addition on a couple series), and they tell you there will be another story by so and so date and then that date passes, (gave them a few months, knowing that people have lives outside of fanfiction) and there is still no story. Then, I give them more than a year after the date given, and still no story. So, I send them an email basically saying 'I love your series blah blah, is the other story going to be posted, yadda yah, it's fine if it's not, I just want to know so I don't keep hoping...' and I don't even get a response! Then, I feel I am justified in my annoyance.
(just as a little sidenote to the unfinished story...debate. I did come across a series on xenafan.com, by the ever so wonderful Missy Good, and the last story (on that site) was unfinished, so I wrote up a quick little email asking if it was somewhere else or if it was unfinished, and I got a response within 3 or 4 days with a link where I could find the rest of that story and the series! that completely made my day...and about the next 2 weeks after, as well!)

that was my blurb...sorry it was so long...........

I like this discussion. I don’t have a lot of peeves. Spelling and grammar errors don’t bother me because the stories here are free entertainment. I don't expect them to be perfect.

I don’t read stories full of text speak. I barely understand that stuff on my phone.

I use to skip stories with no teaser or summary, but (thanks to this site) if a story has a lot of good reviews I’ll read it. I read anything by my favorite writers regardless if there’s a teaser or not. If it’s a short story by Mavis Applewater no summary is needed. ;)

Disclaimers bother me sometimes, especially if they're ten paragraphs long and have a lot of personal notes by the writer. I don’t mind the “I don’t own these characters” part, a warning about violence and the writer’s email address, but some things are too much. I haven’t seen it a lot here, but on fanfiction.net people go crazy with personal stuff.

Exaggerated Disclaimer Example: Sorry I haven’t updated this story in a month. My neighbor’s cousin’s ex-wife’s sister had a baby, her cat ran away and her computer crashed from a virus. I’ve been too busy to write because I let my neighbor’s cousin’s ex-wife’s sister borrow my laptop. She’s addicted to myspace so I’ve been taking care of her baby, cleaning her house and looking for her cat.

I hope the cat is found, but I don’t care about the rest of the drama. I just want to read the story. All that personal nonsense takes too long to scroll through on my blackberry.

Another peeve I have - female characters with male names. Unisex names like Alex and Chris are fine. Characters named Randy and Michael are hard to imagine as women no matter how gorgeous they’re described.

Disclaimer: I’m not a card carrying man hater. I like men almost as much as cheesecake, but when it’s story time I like to read about women.

That does sound odd. Just out of complete curiosity, do you have a link to such a story, ImmortalKarma? :rose2: :rose2: :rose2:

I guess I'm one of those who cram more info into my disclaimers than strictly necessary, but, you know, one line becomes two, then three, then... :D

(it's a series...don't worry, it's short)
i think there might be another one (that's not part of this series by a different author) but i can't find that right now....

and just so everybody knows...i have nothing against the author of these stories! I actually think the author is very good and have read other stories by them...but when you put Xena and Gabrielle as the character names in a modern day setting I get confused on which of my little bookmark folders to put them in... : )

Hmmm I have a lot of pet peeves but I'm just going to hit on my biggest one.

Golden Gabrielle.

This is where Gabrielle can beat the crap out of an little old lady, start WW3, drown kittens and poop on a nuns and everyone thinks she's perfect!
And what makes it worse is that Xena is always doing something bad and it's always her fault! (Usually because she hurt G's feeling's and everyone is saying how lucky she is to have such a beautiful and caring person..)

I'm just tired of stories where the writer makes G into this holy figure who dose no wrong. While Xena is left to apologize and incur the wraith and bad luck of just being Xena.

I'm a pretty tolerable person fiction wise, as long as I don't need a hax0r translator to interpret it I'm up to reading anything.

Something that does bother me is inserting political propoganda... A little is tolerable, everyone has unique views that can influence their writing... but one I read involving immigration (in the U.S.) was downright hateful and it bothered me on a very deep level. Sadly once I had seen it in that work, I started seeing it on a lower level in that bard's other fictions and it ruined for me what were otherwise very ingenious and entertaining works.

One other thing: children. The cute, self-sacrificing, morally self-conscious ones who are saying the darndest things one moment and giving out random bits of inspirational child-wisdom the next. I think it was Trey Parker who said "kids are just plain ***holes". Take southpark's crudeness, plus lady gaga's fashion sense and bart simpson's sense of humor, mix in some 3rd world dictator, and then halve that. And that's a real kid.

LOL! Thanks! It's alway nice to see I'm not the only one ranting about Holy Gabriell. :batting_eyelashes:

It just get's really annoying when I read a story about Uber G just waltz in and rips Xena a new one for no apparent reason and Xena can't do the same. :waiting: It's really annoying...

But what makes it worse is through out the story they are talking about Equallity this and that and it dosen't show in the story. Plus Uber G act ten kinds of stupid and nobody wants to comment on it or she dosen't get consquense for her actions!

Why can she just run blindly into a gun fight, not get hit, finds Uber X and saids "I love you and our love is strong enogh to deflect these bullets from us" WTF!

One I am finding more and more annoying as time passes. How come uber characters, and even original characters, are so commonly rich? Private jets, expensive cars, bottomless bank accounts, etc. It's fine if they are introduced as such but I am sick and tired of a character being portrayed as someone in a relatively ordinary job or with a relatively ordinary lifestyle and in the middle of the story they don't care about money and start buying jets or whatever.

Well, I know from personal experience that it's fun for us have-nots to write about the haves - but I agree with what you said. That really does sound a bit like make-it-up-as-you-go-along writing.

I read a lot.. too much for my own good but anyway...
With the considerable exception of poor writing and no/boring plot, I have very few pet peeve. Usually I'm too busy admiring people that can write to let little things bother me too much. However there are some things that are like pebble in my shoes (I hate that sensation):

Repeated grammar/spelling errors. Errors happen, but if trough all the story the same mistakes (f.i. then instead of than, tried instead of tired and so on) continue to occur, it annoys me to no end... it spoils the mood and I have to reread the sentence to understand it.

Poor indication of a break between scenes.

Different persons who speak in the same paragraph. Add to the mix some thoughts and you lost me.

Forceful perfection: their eyes meet, bum love to first sight, they became an item and begin an activity together, bum an financial empire is build in less than a second. The heroines became very rich, manage in some way to have children, but remain the simple girls of the near door and live a semi-normal life…. I mean came on…. I like perfection and epic stories on occasions but too much is too much…

I’m afraid I dislike repeat things. I cringe If the paragraph contains too many repetitions. This is valid also with endless use of the same way to indicated a person. I remember a very god story where the words “her true love” and “ the love of her life” are used everytime the lead character refers to her love interest. The story was very good but after more of 400 pages of that I wanted to throttle the girl.

This is what came in my mind now; I know that there other pet peeves (I can be picky if I want), but the I have a very short time memory and usually I forget easily if the aggravation is little. These things usually interrupt the flow of the story for me for a moment or two, but at the end if the story it’s good they are not so important. I can waver but I don’t stop (if the plot is good... if not I can warp away faster than any existent physic limit).

I recently stumbled upon this discussion while reading K. Alexander's Super Duper Uber Wunderbar. Which is hilarious by the way! I read every post from the first one in 2008 all the way to the last one only a couple of months ago. Boy what a ride!

What is my pet peeve? People who don't realize how hard it is for any person to put thouhts onto paper and then share it with others.

There are so many things I wanted to comment on that you must forgive me if it seems like I'm rambling. Firstly I want to say thank you to Atheneum for accepting stories from all writers. The perfect, published writers and the not so wonderful alike. I'm working on my first story and I have probably rewritten it about 20 times, because each time I read it, I feel it's not good enough to put on this fantastic site with all these accomplished writers.

Did I say accomplished? (Shock! Horror!) Yes I did! In my opinion if you have the guts to actually put a creative thought process onto paper and then actually share it with someone, you are accomplished. As for the people who think you have to be a realistic writer, that deals with the harshness of the real world, to be a good writer...

May I actually go as far as naming a few VERY famous writers who specialize in the unreal, fictional and completely NOT factual. Terry Pratchett which writes about trolls, vampires and Igor's. Stephen King whom can make you wet yourself by only playing with your imagination. After reading one of his books I always swear I can hear leaves rustling outside my window. :big grin:

Why must everything so called 'serious' writers write about always be factual and realistic? Most of us, me especially, read to escape the harsh, unrelenting REAL life. I honestly don't know where I would be if it weren't for writers dragging me into the world they created just to give me a little reprieve from everything else going on.

As for the spelling of certain words that differ when writing in American English or UK English. I live in South Africa and we are taught UK English from the moment we start studying English in school. It is drilled into your head that color is a spelling fault and colour is the right way to go. Why must I or any other English person write in American English for it to be acceptable?

I could go on but I think my post is already a bit lengthy.

Lastly thank you Atheneum for encouraging all writers. If it weren't for your site I would long ago have given up on writing!!!

Stay safe!
