Part 2

Gabrielle was riding behind Xena when they arrived in Potaedia. She had decided that there were definite benefits from riding. It meant that she could be close to Xena and not have to justify why anymore. They walked slowly through town and their presence drew a few comments from the locals, as it usually did when they came back for a visit.

Xena pulled Argo to a stop outside Gabrielle's parent's place and quickly dismounted. All of a sudden, Gabrielle didn't feel so well and she was wondering if what she had decided about visiting her parents was such a good idea after all. Xena could see she was worried and pulled her into a tight embrace and bent down to kiss her.

"Remember, I love you and I'm right here, okay?"

"I love you too," Gabrielle replied as she knocked on the door.

The door opened and there stood Lila.

"Gabrielle," she screamed, "Why didn't you send word that you were coming? What have you been doing since you were here last? Mom, Dad, Gabrielle's home." As if it was an afterthought she added, "Oh, hi Xena, it's good to see you too."

Xena didn't have time to answer Lila since Lila had pulled Gabrielle inside towards the kitchen.

"Slow down, Lila, don't give yourself a heart attack," Gabrielle warned.

"Gabrielle," Hecuba greeted as she grabbed her daughter in a bear hug. "It's been so long since we've seen you. Are you well?"

"Yes, mother, I'm fine."

Xena walked up behind them just as Herodotus walked in the back door. He instantly locked eyes with the warrior and a look of hatred washed over his expression.

Hecuba also threw a look of hatred in Xena's direction but none the less, she said, "Xena, it's good to see you again." Xena realized she spoke only out of politeness.

"You too, Hecuba, Herodotus," Xena replied.

"Father!" Gabrielle exclaimed as she ran and hugged him.

"It's good to see you, daughter. You are a little thin. I suppose living on the road does that to you," he stated while he shot another look Xena's way.

'Oh boy,' Gabrielle thought 'This is going to be tough.'

"How long you gonna stay?" Lila asked.

Gabrielle glanced at Xena who shrugged and rolled her eyes. 'No help there,' Gabrielle mused. "I'm not sure, Lila. We're on our way to the Amazons. I guess we could stay for a couple of days."

"That's good to hear," Hecuba stated. "Now come and have something to eat."

Lila and Gabrielle followed her and Herodotus into the kitchen with Xena bringing up the rear. Herodotus and Lila sat down, Hecuba went about putting things on the table and Xena stayed standing in the doorway.

"Xena, come sit down please." Gabrielle walked towards her and grabbed her hand and sat her opposite of Lila.

"Would you like some tea?"

"Yes Gabrielle, that would be fine," Xena answered knowing that Herodotus hadn't taken his eyes off her since she'd entered the kitchen.

Gabrielle sat down next to Xena and grabbed her hand underneath the table. 'Well, I think it's better to get this out into the open first', she decided.

"Mother, could you please come and sit down for a moment. I've got something important to tell you."

"What is it Gabrielle?" her mother asked.

"W-Well, the reason I'm here is to tell you that I have fallen in love and I'm going to be married. I wanted to invite you all to be there with me at the wedding."

Everyone's jaw dropped and there was complete silence for a few heartbeats until Lila jumped up and ran around the table to hug her sister.

"Oh Gabrielle, that's fantastic. Who is it? Do I know him? Where is he?"

"Yes dear, where is the young man?" her mother inquired.

"Ah, yes, well the young man would be, would be, would be…" Gabrielle stammered. She gripped Xena's hand tighter.

"Would be me." Xena said looking firstly at Hecuba and then Herodotus.

Silence again filled the room and Xena could see the change came over Gabrielle's parent's faces. They both stood up abruptly and before Xena knew what was happening, Hecuba reached over and slapped Gabrielle on the face. "Get out, you, you whore. How dare you come back into this house with that, that slut? Your father and I brought you up right and this is how you repay us."

In one swift movement, Xena was in front of her bard preventing another attack by her mother. Xena stared down both parents almost willing them to try something just so she could retaliate. No-one said anything until Gabrielle placed her arm on Xena's and whispered, "Come on love, it's not worth it. Please, let it go".

Xena turned and gazed into Gabrielle's eyes. She looked back at Hecuba and Herodotus and growled, "The reason the two of you are still standing is because of Gabrielle. Do you know how hard it was for her to come here and tell you about us? She could have kept if from you, but no, she wanted you to know the truth because that's the kind of person she is. She narrowed her eyes and whispered hotly, "If you'd open your eyes once in a while you'd see a woman who's the most honest and caring human being you'll ever have the privilege of knowing."

Gabrielle stood there absolutely stunned at what she had just heard. Lila moved to hug Gabrielle again but was stopped by Hecuba.

"Don't you dare go near her, Lila. As far as I'm concerned, I no longer have a daughter called Gabrielle."

"No, Mother, you can't mean that!" Lila shouted.

"I agree with your mother, Lila. I want the two of you out of my sight this instant. Xena, I can never forgive you for corrupting my daughter." Herodotus then pointed at Gabrielle and said, "Your name will never be spoken in this house again."

"That's fine by me!" shouted Gabrielle. "Come on Xena, let's go."

With that she pulled Xena away and they left the house as quickly as they could. Xena mounted Argo and pulled Gabrielle up in front. As they turned to leave, her parents ran out the front door with Lila close behind. Gabrielle could see the tears streaming down her sister's face. She broke out from behind her parents and grabbed hold of Gabrielle's hand.

"Please, don't leave me here, Gabrielle. I couldn't bear it if I never saw you again," Lila pleaded.

"Don't worry, Lila. Xena and I will be staying at the tavern for a few days. I'll come back tomorrow and try to talk to Mother and Father again, okay?" Gabrielle tried reassuring her sister with a smile. "If you can get away, please come visit. There's so much I want to tell you."

Lila wiped her faced and tried to smile, "Okay Gabrielle, I'll try."

She went to say something else when the voice of her mother interrupted them, "Lila, get back here away from them. Hurry up and get out of my sight, Gabrielle. Just the thought of you with that woman makes me sick."

Hecuba turned and went back inside followed by Lila. Gabrielle's father, however, stayed and locked eyes with his daughter one final time. Gabrielle thought she saw sadness there for an instant before he turned and went inside.

Xena urged Argo on as they headed toward the inn.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ to here 17/3/01
Xena found and paid for a stable for Argo for a couple of days. She knew that she probably paid too much for it, but couldn't be bothered trying. All she wanted was to get Gabrielle and her a room, have a bath, something to eat and go to sleep. She reached down and grabbed Gabrielle's hand and pulled her towards the inn. The young woman hadn't said anything since they'd left her parent's place and Xena was a little worried. Steering her bard towards the tavern, she pulled her closer and told her she loved her. There was no response at all. 'A bath, some food and a good night's rest is what you need my love' Xena thought.
Upon entering the tavern, Xena noticed that everyone inside stopped talking. She gave the patrons one of her famous eyebrow raised looks and they all turned back to what they were doing and forgot about the two women. She moved to the bar and negotiated a price for a room for a couple of nights.
"Can you organize for a bath and some hot food to be sent up?" she inquired.
"Sure thing. Your room is the last one on the left at the top of the stairs. Which would you prefer first, bath or food?"
"Bath first I think."
"Fine. Someone will be up to fill the bath shortly."
Xena placed her arm around the bard's shoulders and helped steer her up the stairs and into the room. She helped Gabrielle sit on the bed and pulled her into a strong embrace. That's all it took for the bard to lose control and she begun crying for all she was worth.
Xena held her tight and whispered words of love, trying to comfort her. After a while, the sobs slowed and Gabrielle pulled away.
"Oh Xe, why, why did they say such hateful things?"
"Gabrielle, they just can't see from behind their hatred of me, that's all. I know you really wanted them to be happy for you. They're your parents and they only want what's best for you and as far as they're concerned, it's not me."
"But Xe, you are what's best for me. You make me happy. I am going to try and talk to Father tomorrow. I saw sadness in his eyes before we left. I need to make him see that what we have is nothing to be ashamed of."
Before Xena could say anything, there was a knock at the door. She moved toward the door and opened it to find two young men with several buckets of hot water.
"We're here to fill the bath." One of the boys managed to get out. He had never seen such a beautiful woman in all his young years.
The two of them stumbled into the room and filled the bath.
On their way out the door, the older boy turned back to Xena and asked, "Will you be requiring extra water?"
"No, thank you. One bath will be fine."
"Okay, goodnight," the boy replied as he quickly raced out the door.
Xena walked back to Gabrielle and pulled her into a warm embrace.
"Come, my bard. It's time for you to have a nice relaxing soak. Once you've had that and some food, it's bed for you."
"Xena, I'm not a child."
"I know that my love, but would I be incorrect in saying that you are tired after what happened this afternoon?"
As soon as Xena mentioned the word 'tired', Gabrielle tried to suppress a yawn. She slapped Xena on the arm before scolding her. "I hate it when you're right."
"I have many skills, my love."
"Ooh, I hate that too." Gabrielle giggled as she begun removing her clothes. "You'll join me in the bath, I hope?"
"But of course," Xena responded with a smirk as she removed her armor.
"Here, let me help you with that."
"No, Gabrielle. That's okay. You hop in and soak for a while. I'll be there in a moment. I just want to see the barkeep and tell them to send up some food in about half a candlemark."
Gabrielle finished removing her clothes and climbed into the steaming bath.
Xena hurried down to the barkeep and organized for some food to be sent up in half a candlemark.
"Oh, and do you have any nutbread?" she inquired.
"Yes, I think my wife has some left."
"Can you add that to the order as well, please?"
"Sure thing."
"Thanks. I appreciate it."
"Anything for Gabrielle. She's very much loved around here."
That last comment stopped Xena in her tracks. She slowly turned back to the barkeep and gave him a quizzical look.
"You know who she is then?"
"But of course. She used to come here all the time when she was younger and listen to the travelling bards. Her parents didn't know of course. They always worried about her. I knew she had the gift of story telling even back then, so I would let her sit and listen. She is really special."
Xena smiled as she replied, "That she is, my friend, that she is."
She returned to the room to find Gabrielle nice and relaxed in the bath. As she removed her leathers, she looked over; thinking the young woman had fallen asleep and was surprised when Gabrielle spoke.
"Xena, hurry up and get in here, it's delightful."
"Well, just where do you suppose I'm going to fit. You've made yourself nice and comfortable."
Gabrielle opened one eye and grinned before she answered, "I suppose you'll just have to slide in behind me now won't you. After all, someone's got to wash my back."
"So that's all I am to you huh? Someone to wash your back."
"Xena, you're more than that to me and you know it." The bard sat up to give the warrior room to slip in behind her and was immediately wrapped in the warrior's long arms.
"I love you, Gabrielle."
"And I love you too, Xena. I have to make Mother and Father see that as well."
"How are you going to get close to your Father without your Mother knowing?"
"Father should be tending the fields early in the morning. Mother never usually goes to the fields. I'll start there."
"Do you want me to go with you?"
"No, love. I would like to do this on my own. Could you find something to do?"
"I think I might treat Argo to some new shoes. She deserves it."
"Right, it's settled then. Now turn around and I'll wash you. We'd best not be in this position when the food arrives, don't you think?"
Xena smirked as she kissed the blonde on top of the head.
"It's probably not a good idea, no," Xena replied as she turned and let Gabrielle wash her back.
They were out in plenty of time before the food arrived and after eating, they settled down on the bed and both quickly fell asleep.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~to here 19/3/01
Xena woke up just before dawn as usual. She had decided that she would let Gabrielle sleep in as she could tell the bard was tired from the emotional drain of the day before. She was content in just holding her love in her arms taking in the wonderful smell that was her Gabrielle and snuggled closer as she drifted back off to sleep.

Gabrielle woke up and could see the sun was high in the sky and she figured it was about mid morning. She realized that Xena was not beside her and hope that her warrior wasn't too far away. As if she willed it, the door opened and Xena was there with a tray full of food for breakfast.

"So you are finally awake, sleepyhead," Xena teased.

"Thank you for letting me sleep in. I guess I needed it."

"You're welcome, love. I thought you'd be awake soon and looking for food."

Before either one had a chance to say anything else, Gabrielle's stomach made itself known making both women giggle.

"Come on, you'd better feed that monster before it gets angrier," Xena mentioned.

Gabrielle rolled out of bed and placed her arms around Xena while the warrior was setting the table.

"I love you, Xena. Thank you for loving me."

Xena turned in Gabrielle's arms and returned the hug.

"Loving you is the easiest thing in the world to do." Xena replied as she bent down and kissed Gabrielle trying to convey all her love in just that one kiss. When she pulled away, the stomach monster growled again, which caused her to smile.

"Sit down and eat before I hear that stomach of yours again."

"I can't help it if I've got a healthy appetite," Gabrielle retorted.

"Healthy? That's an understatement."

"Oh you." Gabrielle slapped the warrior on the arm and took a seat.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
After breakfast, Gabrielle left the warrior at the blacksmiths and continued on her way to her parent's place. She knew that her father would be somewhere in the fields so she decided to avoid the house altogether.
As she headed down towards the back of her parent's farm she heard someone calling her. Lila came running from the barn.
"Gabrielle, wait up!" she yelled.
As her sister got closer, Gabrielle said, "Sssh, Lila. I don't want Mother to know I'm here."
"Don't worry Gab, she's not here. She went to see her friend Sarah and will be gone for a little longer, so there's nothing to worry about. Going to see Father?"
"Yes, I thought I'd be able to talk to him this morning. What happened after we left yesterday."
"Mother and Father had this huge fight. I have never heard Mother yell so much. She was so angry, Gab."
Gabrielle shoulders slumped slightly, which wasn't lost on Lila.
"But the good news is that Father didn't seem as angry as I thought he would be."
"Really?" Gabrielle was surprised.
"You know you've always been his favorite, Gab. I think after the initial shock, he had a long think about things."
"No kidding?"
"No kidding," Lila firmly stated.
"So where is he now?" Gabrielle asked.
"He's in the back field. Do you want me to go with you?"
"No thanks, Lila. This is something I need to do by myself."
"Alright, Gab. Be sure you stop and say goodbye before you leave."
Gabrielle gave Lila a worried look.
"Don't worry. I told you, Mother wouldn't be back for some time."
"What if she is?"
"Well then, you handle it. Gabrielle, you have to talk to her sometime as well you know."
"I know. I'd much rather it be later than sooner."
"Gab, you're so dramatic some times," Lila teased as she drew Gabrielle in for a hug. "No go and sort this out with Father."
"Lila, you haven't said how you feel about my relationship with Xena."
"Gab, I must admit that I was just as shocked as everyone else when you said that you and Xena were to be bonded. After seeing the way you two locked at each other when she protected you from Mother, let's just say, I can only hope that someone looks at me that way someday."
"So you're alright with it?" Gabrielle questioned.
"Yep. As long as you're happy, then there's nothing else to think about."
Gabrielle hugged her sister again.
"Thank you, Lila. That means a lot to Xena and me."
Lila pulled back from the embrace and said, "Now go, stop wasting time."
"Okay, I'll see you later," Gabrielle replied as Lila turned and went back to the barn.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ to here 20/3/01
Gabrielle was deep in thought by the time she reached the field that Lila said her father was working. She couldn't see him right away as he wasn't working, he was taking a break and sitting under a tree. She made her way towards him. He spotted her immediately, but didn't say anything.
"Father, I've come to talk to you."

"I figured you would. What is it you have to say?" The tone of Herodotus' voice couldn't be mistaken.

"Father, I know that what I told you last night will be hard to accept, but I couldn't go on without telling you and Mother. I love Xena with all my heart and she makes me happy. Why can't you see that?"

"Gabrielle, when you went off with that woman, I thought you'd be back within a couple of days, but you weren't. After we heard that you had become Queen of the Amazons, it broke my heart. I realized then that you wouldn't be coming home. Both your Mother and I had hoped you would marry some nice farmer, settle down and give us grandchildren."
"Father, there's no reason why I can't still give you grandchildren. I still want children and even though I haven't discussed it with Xena, I'm sure she'll want them as well. We would find a way."
"Gabrielle, you've always been special to me and I have given you everything that I possible could to give you a good life. What you told us last night goes against all I've been taught."

"Father, love is love. No matter who the people are. I wish you could see that."

"I'm trying, Gabrielle. It's just hard to accept that your daughter loves another woman. After all, you know that most people are not tolerant of those kind of relationships."

"I know. That's why Xena and I have agreed not to show affection in public as it is too dangerous to let people know the true nature of our relationship. The only place that will accept us will be Amazonia. That's why we're headed there. I want to make Xena my official consort."
"You love her that much?"

"I love her with all my heart and soul. I can think of no-one else to spend the rest of my life with."

"I suppose I have no other choice but to accept this otherwise I'll lose you and I'm not willing to do that. You must understand that it will be difficult and I can't promise that I will ever forgive Xena for taking you away from us, but I will try."
"That's all I can ask."

Herodotus held out his arms, which Gabrielle gladly fell into his embrace. Tears started flowing down her cheeks as she hugged her father tighter.

"Sssh, little one. It's alright. I love you."

At her father's statement, the tears flowed more freely.

"I love you too, Father."

Father and daughter stayed that way for some time, just holding and gaining comfort from one another. They had made a start at least.

The sun was right above them now and Herodotus suggested that they head back to the house for some lunch. He noticed that Gabrielle stiffened slightly.

"What's wrong? Your mother shouldn't be there."

"I know, that's what Lila said, but I don't know if I'm ready to confront her yet. She was so very angry yesterday."

"Yes she was, but I think that's why she's gone to Sarah's house today. I guess she needed to talk to someone about it."

"Well, if you're sure it'll be alright."

"Gabrielle, you're my daughter and you are welcome in my house, always. Now come on."

Herodotus put his arm around Gabrielle's shoulder as they walked back towards the house. They were about to go inside when Hecuba came racing out the back door.

"What do you think you're doing, Herodotus? I thought I said I didn't want that woman back in our house again."

"Hecuba, you're over-reacting. I have had a long talk with Gabrielle and we must accept her relationship with Xena. She loves her very much."

"Love, love. How could she love that she-devil. She had done nothing but put Gabrielle in danger ever since she convinced her to leave us."

Gabrielle had had enough.

"Stop it, Mother. I will not have you calling Xena names like that. I do love her and I will never, ever leave her. Do you hear me?" Gabrielle was fuming. How dare her mother call Xena a 'she-devil'.

Before Hecuba had a chance to reply, Herodotus stepped between the two and placed a hand on his wife's shoulder.

"Wife, I want you to sit down and listen to what Gabrielle has to say. It's the least you can do. You have never listened to what she wanted when she was a child. I am only realizing that now. She will never be what we wanted her to be. Don't you see that? She is destined for a lot more than what Potaedia can offer her. Now go sit down and talk."

To here 21/3/01

Both Gabrielle and Hecuba were shocked at the forcefulness in Herodotus' voice. Herodotus grabbed both Hecuba and Gabrielle by the hand and led them inside.

"Lila, you and I will prepare some lunch, while your mother and sister talk."

With that he left the two women alone. They sat there for a short time, either one not wanting to speak first. Gabrielle thought that she would have to be the one, who would make the first move, so she cleared her throat as she spoke.

"Mother. Will you please talk to me? Tell me what you're feeling."

"Gabrielle. You come in here after being away for so long, announce that you're in love with someone, a woman no less, and then that you are to be married. How do you think I feel?" Hecuba retorted.

Gabrielle could hear the anger in her mother's words.

"Is it the fact that I'm in love with a woman, or the fact that the woman is Xena?" Gabrielle asked.

"Both. The idea of two women loving each other is something that I can't comprehend. That fact that you were born from me and I love men and you don't, well, I just can't understand it. What about Perdicus? Didn't you love him?"

"Yes I did Mother, but not as a wife should. I loved him like a brother and it was wrong of me to marry him."

"Well then why did you?"

"Because I thought that's what you wanted," Gabrielle spat out. "I did it because I was trying to be the good little girl that you and Father wanted me to be. Once I said my vows, I knew it was a mistake."

Gabrielle moved to her mother's side and grabbed her hands.
"Mother, I cannot be the person you want me to be. Xena allows me to be who I should be. She loves me for who I am and has never tried to change me. I love her so very much and I wish that you could get to know her and see how kind and gentle she really is."

"So you're determined to go through with this bonding thing I suppose?"

"Yes, I most certainly am. Xena is the one I wish to spend the rest of my life with. As I told Father, being with another woman doesn't mean that I can't have children or have a secure home or anything that I could get if I was in a relationship with a man."

"What about all the prejudice you will face because of your relationship?"
"Mother, I am Queen of the Amazons. Surely people who know that will understand what sort of relationship I would be likely to engage in."

"That's another thing I have trouble with. You, leader of those savage women."

Gabrielle's anger rose again.

"Mother, they are not savages. My Amazon sisters are some of the best friends I have ever had. If you come for my bonding ceremony, you'll see for yourself."

"It means a lot to you that we accept your relationship with Xena doesn't it?"

"Yes it does. I don't want to leave here with hard feelings. Please can you find it in your heart to accept Xena and I?"

"Gabrielle, I don't know when and if I'll ever accept your relationship with Xena, but I promise to try and be civil while you are here. That's all I can do at this point in time."

"Alright Mother, if that's all you can give, then I'll take it."

There were interrupted by a knock at the door and Gabrielle guessed as to who it might be. She rose and quickly answered the door confirming her suspicions.

"I knew it was you." Gabrielle smiled as she pulled Xena through the door.

"Well Argo has new shoes and I didn't have anything else to do, and you weren't back at the tavern, so I thought I'd come looking for you."

Hecuba rose and came towards the warrior before any more could be said. Xena immediately went on the defensive and put her arm around Gabrielle's shoulders.

"Xena, I have been having a long talk with my daughter and while I still am having trouble with your relationship, I wanted to ask you one question. Do you love my daughter?"

Xena turned to Gabrielle, gave her a smile before looking back at Hecuba.

"I love her with all that I am and I will spend the rest of my life loving and protecting her."

"I will keep you at your word warrior, remember that. Come on, I'm sure Herodotus and Lila have something prepared for lunch by now."

She headed for the kitchen and left the lovers alone.

"So how did it go really?" Xena asked.

"Not too bad. Father has been more accepting. I think it's going to take Mother a long time to come to terms with it all. I can only hope that she agrees to come to the wedding. That should help."
"Just don't try too hard, Gabrielle. I can only imagine what they are feeling. They'll come around in time, you'll see. Now, let's eat. I've worked up quite an appetite."

They went in to join the rest of the family in the kitchen.

To here 21/3/01

After lunch Xena offered to help Herodotus in the field while Gabrielle helped her mother around the house. Lila and Gabrielle chatted, but Hecuba remained tight-lipped for the most part. Gabrielle knew that this would be a long hard struggle for her so she decided to not push the issue. Her mother would speak to her when she was ready.

Xena found that Herodotus was not such a bad person after all. He just loved his little girl and wanted the best for her. They talked about all sorts of things. She re-affirmed to him that she was very much committed to Gabrielle.

"Herodotus, I make this promise to you that I would give my life for hers if it came down to that."
"I can see that you love her very much Xena. I would be very honored to come to your bonding ceremony."

"And what of Hecuba?"

"I'm sure that I could convince her to go as well. What of your family, Xena? Have you told them?"

Xena could see that this man was trying to get to know her better and she let him continue with his questions.

"My mother already knew I was in love with Gabrielle when we visited there recently. She told me that I had to tell Gabrielle that I loved her. She loves Gabrielle like another daughter."

"What of your father?"

"He's not around anymore. He died a long time ago."
"Do you have any other family?"

"I have an older brother Toris, but I'm not sure where he is at the moment and I had a younger brother Lyceus who died many years ago," Xena replied.

"I'm sorry. Were you close?"

"Yes, very. He was very much like Gabrielle. Full of life and love." Xena turned solemn.

"We'd better get back to this if we want to finish it today."

Xena made sure that that discussions were over for now with that statement and she was grateful Herodotus too noticed of the tone of her voice. She hadn't meant to tell him as much as she had. 'I suppose it has to work both ways though. I have to get to know him as well' she considered.

They finished tilling the field shortly before nightfall and made their way back to the house. Dinner was almost ready.

"Why don't you take Xena to the bathhouse to wash up before dinner?" Lila said to her sister.

"That's okay, I'm sure Herodotus will want to wash up first."

"No Xena, you wash up first. I have a few things I want to do in the barn first," stated Herodotus.

"Well as long as you're sure, I'd love to wash up."

Gabrielle could hardly believe her ears. Here was Xena and her father being civil to each other. In fact, it was almost like they were the best of buddies.

She grabbed a towel and Xena's hand and headed for the bathhouse. As soon as she shut the door, she pounced; grabbing Xena's head and bringing her in for a kiss.
"What on earth happened between you and Father? It's almost like you are the best of friends."

"I wouldn't say that. But we did have a good talk and I think we've come to an understanding, that's all."
"That's all? Xena this is far better than I could have imagined. It's really going to be alright with my parents, isn't it?"
"I wouldn't get my hopes up just yet, Gabrielle. Both your Mother and Father still has a long way to go."

"I know, but it doesn't hurt to dream now does it? Now are you going wash or what?" Gabrielle said huskily.

"Gabrielle, don't even think about it. We're in your parent's house. You'll just have to wait until we get back to the tavern."

"Oh Xena, I have ached for your touch all day and now we're alone, I need to feel you."

Xena cupped the bard's face in her hand and smiled.

"As I have too my love, but now is not the time or place. If we took longer than normal, they will know that we were doing more than just washing up and I don't think that would look good, do you?"

"Mmm, you're right. That might be pushing it a little too far."
"And just think how hot I'll be later tonight after having to wait." Xena nuzzled the bard's neck.
"Xena, I want you so much right now."

"Me too love, but we should be getting back. They'll be waiting for us."

"You're right. Hurry up. The sooner we finish dinner and say good night, the quicker I can ravish you later."

"Is that so?" Xena's eyebrow went up.

"Yes it is. Now hurry up. I'll meet you back in the kitchen."

Dinner was a quiet affair with most of the talking by Lila and Gabrielle as they talked about things that had happened since they had last visited. Gabrielle found out who had died, who had married and what new babies had been born. Xena sat there trying not to be bored and trying not to notice the looks that she was still getting from Hecuba. 'I guess it's going to take a lot longer than Gabrielle thought.'

She was roused from her musings when Herodotus addressed her directly.

"So when are you thinking of leaving?"

"We will be leaving first thing in the morning as we wish to get to Amazonia as soon as possible," answered the warrior.

"You're leaving so soon?" Lila asked trying to not sound disappointed. "I thought you'd stay a little longer."

"I know that this hasn't been a very long visit, Lila. It's just that I want to get to Amazonia as soon as possible so that we can organize the bonding ceremony. Being Queen, I must petition the Council and ask for their permission to marry Xena as she is not an Amazon."

"Will Xena not being an Amazon cause any problems my dear?" The question came from her mother.

"None that I can think of. She has fought beside the Amazons before and they know she will give her life for me. I just don't want to take any chances. I want nothing to go wrong."

Xena grabbed her hand under the table and gave it a squeeze. This caused Gabrielle to turn and look at her. Xena saw so much love in her beautiful green eyes. Oh how she loved this woman and she wanted to show her how much. She needed to let her lover know that they had to leave and had to leave now!

"Well if we're going to leave tomorrow morning, I think we should head back to the tavern and get some sleep. What do you think, Gabrielle?" Xena asked as she squeezed the bard's hand.

Gabrielle knew what that meant. She was to agree, no questions asked.
"Yes of course, Xena. It has been a long day and I am tired."

She stood up and moved then she hugged her parents.
"Mother, Father. Thank you so much for trying to accept my relationship with Xena. I know it will be difficult and I won't push you but if you wish to come to the bonding ceremony, I would be very happy."

"I can't promise anything Gabrielle, but I will think about it," Hecuba answered.

Gabrielle nodded and went and hugged her sister.

"Gab, it has been so good to see you. Please, take me with you," she whispered.
"Why, what's wrong?"

Before Lila had a chance to answer, her mother was by her side giving Lila a disapproving look.

"No-nothing," Lila replied in a small voice.

Herodotus gripped Xena's arm in a warrior's handshake.
"Xena, take care of my daughter."

"I will Herodotus, I will."

The two women made their way to the front door and Gabrielle told her father that she would send word when the bonding ceremony would take place.

The trip to the tavern turned out to be a race. The two lovers couldn't get back there fast enough. The thought of the lovemaking that would await them spurned them on. They nearly knocked over several people inside the tavern in their eagerness to get to their room. They failed to notice the contented smile on the barkeep's face as they ran by.

As soon as Xena closed the door behind them, she felt herself pinned against it.

Gabrielle was grabbing furiously at her clothes.
"Off, get these off. I want you naked now!" the bard demanded.

"As you wish, my Queen." Xena replied as she helped Gabrielle remove her clothes. She let out a moan in anticipation of the lovemaking about to happen.

She bent down and captured Gabrielle's lips before she whispered, "I love you." Then pulled the younger woman to her and their dance of love begun.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Xena had been unable to keep her eyes off her lover. They had several bouts of lovemaking the night before, but that had done nothing to satisfy the warrior's need for the bard. The swaying of Gabrielle's hips had driven the warrior crazy. She had urged Argo off the track announcing that they would be setting up camp early. When Gabrielle looked at the smoldering look that Xena was giving her, she soon knew why and she wasn't going to complain.
It was late in the afternoon when they finally dressed and were getting ready for the night. Suddenly, Xena heard a noise from the bushes.
"Gabrielle," she whispered, "Move now!" Gabrielle moved quickly and grabbed her staff.
Xena grabbed her sword, jumped up and rushed over to the bushes and pulled out a rather sheepish looking Joxer by the ear.
"Oww. That hurts!" Joxer exclaimed.
Xena let his nose go and said, "Well you shouldn't try to sneak up on us."
"Xena, I wasn't sneaking and by the way it's great to see you. Hi, Gabby," he said to Gabrielle as a huge grin broke out over his face.
Gabrielle rolled her eyes at the pet name that Joxer had for her. "Hi, Joxer. Good to see you too."
"Joxer," Xena mumbled. "What brings you here?"
"Can't I come and see my two favorite girls without a reason?"
"I suppose so," she replied while she rolled both eyes and thinking that her plans for a quite evening alone with the bard were now ruined. She flashed a look of disappointment to Gabrielle, but the look that was returned settled her disappointment. The three of them sat around for a while telling each other what they had been up to since the last time they saw each other. Joxer asked Gabrielle where they were headed next.
"We're going to the Amazons. Would you like to come along?"
Xena flashed a glare in Gabrielle's direction, but saw her lover's kind face and quickly her glare softened.
"Really? Are you sure?" said Joxer, looking at Xena and seeing her glare if but for a moment.
"Sure," answered Xena. "We'd be honored if you came with us."
"Then it's settled then," Gabrielle stated. "Now let's eat."
With that Xena let out a hearty laugh. Nothing ever stood in the way of her bard and mealtime. Joxer and Xena sat down while Gabrielle put together a meal for them. After a meal of dried bread and cheese, Xena and Gabrielle sat close to each other near the fire and Joxer sat on the other side. He had noticed the way that Xena and Gabrielle had been looking at each other and wondered it what he was seeing was real. He could see that Xena had sheepishly placed her arm around Gabrielle's waist and was trying hard not to make it obvious. Gabrielle's face was glowing. There was no mistaking it and his heart suddenly felt very heavy.
"Well, I think I'll be on my way," he announced suddenly and got up to leave.
"What's wrong?" Gabrielle said, getting to her feet and walking over to him touching his arm.
"Nothing. But I think you two would prefer to be alone."
Gabrielle bit her lip nervously. "What makes you say that?"
"Oh Gabrielle, it's quite obvious. I can see the way you too feel about each other," Joxer responded with sadness in his voice. He looked at Xena and then to Gabrielle before he spoke, "You can tell me to mind my own business if you like, but how long have you two been lovers?"
Xena's eyebrow shot up and gave him 'the look' making Joxer shudder. Gabrielle looked at Xena for an answer and again realized that she was not going to get any help there.
Gabrielle sighed and answered, "Not long. Joxer, I'm sorry. We should have told you straight away. We're still just getting used to it ourselves."
"No, that's okay. It's really none of my business anyway."
Xena got to her feet and placed her arm around Gabrielle's shoulders. "Don't say that, Joxer. You're family, surely you know that by now."
"Really?" he asked, the smile returning to his face.
"Really," replied Gabrielle. "Now come on, let's get some sleep. We want to get to Amazonia as soon as possible."
"What's the hurry?" he asked.
"For now, that's a secret." Gabrielle said, winking at Xena.
They bedded down for the night with Joxer on one side of the fire and Xena and Gabrielle on the other. Gabrielle was soon fast asleep in her usual spot, half on and half off the warrior. Xena smiled to herself and thanked the Gods for her beloved bard before she too was soon fast asleep.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The next morning, they were about to head off, when Xena heard someone calling out Gabrielle's name. She couldn't be sure, but she thought it was Lila. Gabrielle grabbed her by the arm and asked, "What's wrong?"

"I can't be sure, but I think I hear Lila calling you. Stay here. I'll be right back."

"I'm going with you," Joxer stated.

"No, you stay here with Gabrielle. I won't be long."

Xena gave Gabrielle a quick peck on the lips, which made both Gabrielle and Joxer blush. She then disappeared into the forest.

Lila had been walking and trying to find Gabrielle for all night. She had not been able to tell Gabrielle the reason she wanted to go with her, but she couldn't stay at home any longer with all the new rules that her mother was trying to enforce. She remembered Gabrielle telling her that if she ever needed help to go to the Amazons and could only hope that she remembered the way.

"Gabrielle!" she shouted again.

"What are you doing here, Lila?" Xena questioned as she walked up behind her. "It's dangerous to be out here alone."

Lila jumped with a fright. "Xena, I need to talk to you and Gabrielle. Mother set up all these new rules and I couldn't stand it I snuck out at first light and decided to follow you. I'm glad that I remembered the directions Gabrielle gave me once on how to get to the Amazons. Can I come with you, please?"

"It's not up to me. You'll have to discuss that with Gabrielle. We'll have to get a message to your parents to let them know you're safe. Come on, let's get back."

With that she wrapped her arms around Xena and gave her a big hug.

"Thank you, I knew you'd understand."

"Oh, um, yeah, sure," Xena mumbled as she slipped out of the embrace.

They walked back to the campsite and as they came into view, Gabrielle jumped up and ran to Lila.

"Lila, what on earth are you doing following us? Don't you know it's now safe? Where are mother and father?" Gabrielle asked.

"Oh Gabrielle. I don't want to stay at home anymore. Mother has become unbearable and has set down all these new rules. Father tried talking to her last night after you left, but they just ended up having this huge fight. Can I come with you to the Amazons, please?" Lila smiled sweetly and whenever she did that Gabrielle had a hard time resisting her.

"Alright, I'm in no mood to take you back home at the moment." Gabrielle sighed, "You can stay with us only for a little while, but we must let Mother and Father know where you are. Agreed?" Lila nodded her head. "Okay then, let's get moving."

The four of them had gone past the first marker that let them know that they had entered Amazon territory. Xena could feel that they were being watched, but didn't say anything. They continued to walk in the direction of the village. Gabrielle and Joxer had their usual banter happening with Lila adding bits and pieces. Xena was content in just listening. She knew that they had been tracked for the last candlemark and knew the guards would make themselves known shortly. As if she willed it, four Amazons swung down from the trees and quickly Gabrielle and Xena raised their arms showing the Amazon signal. Lila and Joxer just stood there not knowing what to do, and quickly glanced at Xena who motioned for them to raise their arms too.

The Amazons bowed before Gabrielle and the head Amazon pulled back her mask to reveal Eponin's face.

"Please, you know you don't have to kneel before me." Gabrielle said noticing the look of concern showing on her face regarding the fact that she had bought a man into Amazon territory. Solari was by her side and also wondered why on earth Gabrielle would bring a man with her. "Eponin, Solari. It's good to see you."

Lila moved from behind Xena and locked eyes with Solari. She was amazed at the heat that welled up inside her. Gabrielle moved to her side and pulled her close, "Eponin, Solari, this is my sister Lila". Eponin smiled and bowed, "Princess, it is a pleasure to meet you".

"Princess, I'm a Princess," Lila screamed.

"Oh yes, Princess. As sister of the Queen, you are automatically given that title," Eponin remarked.

Lila felt her cheeks burning. "Why, thank you…Eponin."

Gabrielle noticed that Eponin and Solari's attention was now directed to the man next to Xena. Gabrielle quickly spoke up, "I know how you feel about having men on Amazon land, but it's okay, this is Joxer."

The two Amazon's faces relaxed and Solari spoke, "Oh, we've heard a lot about you." She extended her arm out to Joxer and clasped it in a warrior's embrace. "Good to meet you."

"G-G-Good to meet you too." Joxer stammered, suddenly feeling a bit intimidated at being amongst these Amazon women. 'I wonder if I can just leave now,' he thought. However, the secret that Gabrielle had mentioned earlier went through his mind and he needed to know what it was.

Eponin moved closer to Xena and clasped her arm in a warrior's embrace. Both women began to grin at each other. Xena could feel the strength in Eponin's grip and a sly grin appeared on her face. 'When would she ever learn,' Xena wondered. Xena returned the grip and just stared into Eponin's eyes.

After a few more heartbeats Eponin relented and mumbled, "Okay, Xena I give." With that Xena released her grip. "Geez, Xena when will you ever learn to take a joke."

With her eyebrow raised, she casually answered, "When you learn to give up Eponin."

Eponin turned and addressed Gabrielle again. "Why didn't you let us know you were coming? We would have prepared a celebration for you."

"Xena and I have an announcement to make later that will be cause for a huge celebration."

Eponin gave Gabrielle a questioning expression before she spoke again "Well, either way. It's great to see you again. All the Amazons will be glad to see you." With that she turned and led the party towards the village. Solari had gone ahead and alerted Ephiny of Gabrielle's arrival. When they were led to the center of the village, Ephiny was there to meet them. She greeted Gabrielle with a warm embrace and shook Xena's arm. As she did so, she noticed a difference in Xena's eyes - a sort of peace. 'Mmm', she considered, 'something's amiss here. I'll have to ask Gabrielle about it later. Maybe, they've given in to their feelings… nah'.

She then focused her attention to Joxer and the young woman who were both partly hidden behind Xena, not sure how to react. She extended her arm out and said, "You must be Joxer? Welcome." Joxer grabbed it and a smile broke out on his face.

Gabrielle then introduced her sister. "Ephiny, I'd like for you to meet my sister, Lila. She'll be staying with us for a while. If that's okay?"

"Of course." Ephiny bowed. "Princess, it's nice to meet you."

"Y-You too," Lila stammered overwhelmed by all this attention.

"Alright my Queen let's get you settled. The royal hut is ready for you as always, and I will have two other huts prepared for Xena and Joxer. I'm sure you'd like Lila to stay with you."

Gabrielle spoke up shyly, "Uh Ephiny, if it's okay with you, Lila will need a hut of her own, as Xena will be staying with me."

Ephiny looked at Gabrielle and went to speak but thought better of it. She knew better than to ask Gabrielle about it in front of a crowd. She'd noticed the flush in Gabrielle's cheeks and decided to wait until later when she had her alone.

"As you wish, My Queen."

"Ephiny, you know to call me Gabrielle when it's not formal. Now lead us to the huts, so we can freshen up before the evening meal. I'm starving."

Solari laughed and stated, "It's nice to know that some things haven't changed."

Gabrielle laughed and said, "I think you'd better warn the cooks, as Lila's appetite can rival mine."

"Gabrielle!" Lila warned loudly.

"Well, it's true." Gabrielle teased.

Joxer was afforded the luxury of being allowed to stay on the outskirts of the village because of his friendship with Gabrielle's. He did have to have a guard with him at all times and Gabrielle had decided it was better to keep him close by so they she and Xena could keep an eye on him as well. There was no need to have him sent to the Centaurs as she knew they would tire of him long before the Amazons. Gabrielle nudged her friends and they started to walk off in the direction of Gabrielle's royal hut. Xena had been watching Joxer throughout this whole exchange, but his gaze had been elsewhere. She turned her eyes to where Joxer was looking and saw that his eyes were trained on the warrior's sparing in the clearing. She smiled to herself and leaned over to Joxer's ear and whispered, "Now remember, you'd better not have any ideas about touching these women. They'll cut your hand off as quick as look at you if you do."

Joxer quickly turned away from the sight and gulped.

"Yeah, sure, whatever you say."

He was led in a different direction to Xena, Gabrielle and Lila and was shown into a sparsely furnished hut. He noticed that there was a guard at the door and he wasn't sure if that was for his protection or not.

"Gabrielle, if that is alright by you, I would like to look around the village before we eat," Lila mentioned.

"I don't think that would be a good idea, Lila. I would have to send someone with you and well, I'm not sure if there's anyone available."

Eponin spoke up, "I'm finished for the day. I'll do it."

Gabrielle was surprised by the offer from the weapons master.
"Well, if you're sure then it's fine by me."

Lila jumped up and down, "Goody. Let's go, Eponin."

"Sure, my Princess," she replied.

"We'll meet you later for dinner," Gabrielle said as she turned and walked toward her hut.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Gabrielle had the guards bring in some hot water so that she could wash off the road grime before dinner. She looked over at her warrior as she was removing her armor and undressing for her bath. 'Her warrior,' she thought. 'Mmm, I like the sound of that.'
Xena turned around and stood naked before Gabrielle. She had a slight smirk on her face as she noted the lust in her love's eyes. She walked over seductively and brought her mouth to Gabrielle's ear and whispered, "Come join me in the bath." She then casually walked away and climbed into the bath.
Gabrielle wanted nothing more than to join Xena, but she didn't want to get caught in the act before she had a chance to tell Ephiny the good news.
"Xe-Xena, I can't. What if someone hears? You know I won't be able to control myself to just bathe if I come in there with you."
Xena let out a loud laugh, "Brie, we're with the Amazons. What's the problem?"
"Xena, I just want to tell Ephiny first, that's all. Now, please, stop looking at me like that."
"Like what?" Xena asked all innocently, while battering her eyes at Gabrielle.
"You know how I mean. Now, hurry up and wash up so I can get in when you're finished."
"Oh Gabrielle, you're such a prude sometimes."
"Xena, I am not and you know it."
Xena continued washing herself and left the smug look on her face stay just long enough to annoy Gabrielle just a little more.
"Oh, alright. You win. Move over." With that Gabrielle broke the record for removing her clothes and jumped into the tub. She scooted behind Xena and took the cloth from her and proceeded to wash her back. Gabrielle's body was on fire from the close contact with the warrior. She bought the cloth up over the warrior's breasts, letting the water trickle over them. Xena had closed her eyes and was losing herself into the bard's touch. She could feel Gabrielle's hardened nipples in her back and the liquid forming in her center. Gabrielle dropped the cloth and brushed her hands over Xena's nipples. They were hardened and so ready. She cupped one in each hand and brushed her thumbs over them as Xena let out a slight moan. She leaned in to Xena's neck and began to leave a trail of kisses up and down and then took the earlobe into her mouth and sucked.
"Oh yes, Brie, please," Xena moaned.
Xena's breathing become more rapid and Gabrielle knew that she was the one in total control. She moved one of her hands down Xena's abdomen making swirling motions. She looked down to the warrior's legs and noticed that she had already spread them wide in anticipation of Gabrielle touching her there. Gabrielle didn't want to disappoint her warrior, so she moved her fingers into the slick folds and caressed them slowly. Xena turned her head and sought out Gabrielle's mouth. As the two touched lips, Gabrielle thrust two fingers into Xena, which caused Xena's hips to jerk. She began to move them in and out slowly. She returned to kissing Xena's neck and pulled the hardened nipple with her other hand. Xena's hips starting thrusting harder against Gabrielle's fingers and Gabrielle knew that it wouldn't take much to send Xena over the edge this time.
"Yes, my love, harder, please, make me come."
Gabrielle couldn't deny her lover and she moved her hand harder and faster.
"Yes, oh gods…gods, Gabrielle," Xena shouted and as she climaxed Gabrielle claimed her lips to try and help stifle the noise.
She waited for Xena to fall back on her before she removed her fingers, which caused the warrior to shudder. She bought them up to her mouth and licked them clean.
"Mmm, beautiful. I'll never stop wanting to taste you."
Xena's breathing was returning too normal and she purred, "Oh, my bard, you are evil."
"Hey, you were the one who started this, thank you very much. I just decided to finish it. Now come on, we need to get ready as they'll be sounding the bell for dinner soon."
With that they climbed out of the tub and got dressed ready to meet the others in the dining hut.
What they didn't know was that while they were in the bath earlier Ephiny had come to see if Xena wanted to help her with the young trainees. Just as she was about to knock on the door, she heard load moaning from Xena coming from inside the Royal hut. She was about to run in and see what was wrong when she heard Xena yell, "Yes, my love, harder, please, make me come".
'Well'
, she thought, 'it's about time those two got together. I think I'll go back to the training field' and with that, she quickly walked away.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Eponin was showing her all around the village. She'd shown her the meeting hall, the stables, the healer's hut and even her own hut. They were walking past another large building when Lila queried her about the building. "This is the bathing house. There's plenty of private rooms should you wish to bath alone, or.. or with your partner."

Lila stopped and looked into Eponin's eyes before she spoke, "Do you have a partner, Eponin?"

"Er, no, my Princess, not right now," she replied, 'But I'd love for you to become mine some day,' she added in thought.

"Why is that?" Lila whispered.

Eponin could feel the heat radiating from Lila.

"I guess, I've not yet found one that has captured my heart," she replied as she noticed that Lila had closed the gap between them.

Lowering her eyes, Lila asked. "Is there anyone right now who you're interested in?"

Eponin could see that she had to get a grip of the situation. After all, she was a warrior, not a romantic. Who was this woman before her stirring up all these long buried emotions?

"I think we should be back. Someone will come looking for us if we're any longer."

She could see the disappointment on Lila's face, but she was unsure of what to say.

"Alright." Lila sighed. "I suppose I am a little hungry."

With that the young woman's stomach growled just like her sister's.

Eponin laughed and teasingly said, "You're definitely the Queen's sister alright."

She quickly caught the elbow that was aimed at her ribs and managed to get out of the way as she headed towards the meal hut.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When Gabrielle and Xena entered the dinner hut, silence met them while they made their way to the Queen's table. Ephiny was sitting there with Solari, Eponin, Joxer, and Lila. Gabrielle sat on Ephiny's right and Xena sat to Gabrielle's left.
Ephiny rose lifting her mug and made a toast, "Praise Artemis, Queen Gabrielle has returned to us safely once again. We also thank her that Xena has returned as well. All hail Queen Gabrielle. All hail Xena."
"All hail Queen Gabrielle," the crowd roared, "All hail Xena."
Ephiny spoke again. "We are also honored to have the Queen's sister here for a visit. All hail Princess Lila."
"All hail Princess Lila," the crowd praised once again.
Lila tried to sink back into her chair and was blushing profusely. She glanced at Gabrielle, who was smirking and then she turned to Eponin. This was not lost on both Gabrielle and Xena. Xena squeezed Gabrielle's hand under the table and Gabrielle turned and nodded at her in silent agreement. She definitely needed to talk to Lila and the sooner the better.
"We also have Xena and Gabrielle's trusted friend Joxer staying with us. All hail Joxer the Mighty," Ephiny added the last bit to help Joxer relax by letting him think that he was well known for his warrior skills.
"All hail Joxer the Mighty," the Amazons returned.
"I know that it is not custom for a man to stay amongst us, but our Queen has requested that he be allowed to stay for the present. If anyone wishes to challenge this decision, please stand and make your objection known."
They all waited to see if anyone would object and seeing no-one looking like they would object, Ephiny sat down and Gabrielle rose.
"I thank you all for the welcome. We have returned to Amazonia for a special reason." She looked over to Xena for assurance before she spoke again.
"I have an announcement to make."
'Here it is,'
thought Ephiny; grinning to herself.
Solari could see the grin on Ephiny's face and wondered what was going on.
"I have asked Xena to bond with me and she has accepted," Gabrielle gushed out all at once.
For a split second there was silence and then the deafening roar of many "Congratulations." Xena stood up beside Gabrielle and put her arm around her shoulders. She had made a deal with Xena not to show public affection, as it could possibly become dangerous for them should people know the real nature of their relationship. It was as she was thinking this that Xena pulled her closer and kissed her deeply. She couldn't believe it. The warrior must feel at complete ease here; Gabrielle liked it.
The kiss went on for a little while until Eponin shouted, "Get a room or sit down," which had everyone in stitches.
Xena released her hold on Gabrielle and sat back down. Gabrielle turned and faced her Nation again and her face suggested that she had something more serious to say.
"As Xena is not an Amazon, she will need the approval of the Council before we can be bonded. Having said that, I would like to ask you, my sisters, do you approve of allowing Xena to bond with your Queen?" Gabrielle held her breath as she looked nervously at Ephiny.
Ephiny knew that Gabrielle didn't need the permission of her fellow Amazons, only the Council. Ephiny knew the bard well. She didn't want any disharmony in the village especially seeing she was to be bonded to the former Destroyer of Nations.
Ephiny rose and helped the bard. "Amazons, is there anyone here who does not believe that Xena has earned the right to bond with our Queen?"
Gabrielle gripped Xena's hand tighter and held her breath waiting to see if anyone would speak up.
Ephiny glanced over to Gabrielle before smiling. "As there are no objections from the majority of our sisters, the proposal will be put forward to the Council members tomorrow."
Gabrielle nudged Xena and a silent message was sent between the two and Xena knew that she had to acknowledge the Amazon's acceptance. She rose and looked to Gabrielle for reassurance before she addressed the Amazons. "I thank all Amazons for your acceptance and I will do everything in my power to honor my Queen and the Nation. Should I do anything to dishonor my Queen or the Nation, I will accept any punishment that the Nation sees fit to bestow upon me." Xena sat back down and squeezed Gabrielle's hand as a joyous shout went up in the hut.
Ephiny then proclaimed, "Let the festivities begin."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
After the meal and when most of the Amazons had left, Gabrielle turned to Xena and whispered, "Do you think you can occupy yourself for about a candlemark? I need to have a talk to Lila."

"Mmm, I'm sure I can do that. I take it you saw the looks she was giving Eponin during the meal?"

"Yes, and I have a feeling that Lila's not quite sure what she's getting herself into. I believe that Mother and Father won't be too happy to hear about it though."

"Do you think Eponin's aware of Lila's interest in her?"

"I'm not really sure. She is a warrior after all and they can be quite thick-headed sometimes."

"Warriors thick-headed. Surely you jest."

Gabrielle tried to suppress a laugh. "You know perfectly well what I mean, Warrior."

"I sure do, love. What are you going to do?"

"I'm not sure. If she is interested in Eponin, then that's fine, but this would all be new to her. When something's new to Lila, she tends to get all caught up in it all and I wouldn't want to see her get hurt. So after we eat, can you please occupy yourself while I find out what's going on?"

Xena leaned over and kissed her on the forehead. "Of course I can. You take as long as you like. I'll stay here with Joxer for a while. You send a guard for me when you're ready."

Gabrielle rose and walked over to Lila who was totally engrossed in a conversation with Eponin. "Lila, would you please accompany me to my hut. I'd like to talk to you about something."

"Um, yeah, sure, Gab. If you'll excuse me Eponin, I'll see you on the training field in the morning."

Eponin stood and bowed showing her respect. "Ye-yeah Princess, my Queen."

"Training field?" Gabrielle questioned.
"Yes, Eponin has been gracious enough to agree to teach me how to defend myself. Is that alright?"

"Yes, that's fine. I just didn't think you would be interested in learning the ways of an Amazon."

"Sure I do. It's all very exciting. I want to learn as much as I can."

"Come on, Lila. Let's go for a walk. Goodnight, Eponin." With that, the Queen grabbed her sister by the hand and walked out the door.

"What was that all about?" Solari whispered into Ephiny's ear.

"Haven't you been paying attention at all?" Ephiny uttered in answer.

Solari shook her head.

"Well my dear one, it seems that Lila is quite taken with Eponin and it's my guess that Gabrielle going to give Lila a talking to on how to act in the company of warriors."

"You know me, Eph. Can't see something right in front of my face. That's why I didn't notice you for ages," she replied with a grin. "Do you think that Gabrielle doesn't want her sister to see Eponin?"

"I don't think it's that. I think it has more to do with the fact that she's the Queen's sister. I'm going to head off to bed. I have a Council Meeting in the morning. You coming?"

"Yes I just think I might." Solari replied as she gave her lover a 'come hither' look.

"Okay then, love. Let's go." They turned their attention to everyone at the table and made their goodnights.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Gabrielle and Lila went walking down by the lake. The ever-present Royal Guard kept their distance to allow the Queen some privacy.
Lila knew what Gabrielle wanted to talk to her about, but couldn't bring herself to speak first.
Gabrielle drew in a breath and spoke, "Lila, far be it for me to tell you how to run your life, but what do you think you're doing with Eponin?"
"Gab, I don't know what to tell you other than from the moment I saw her, I haven't been able to think of anything or anyone else. Why, don't you approve?"
"Lila, it's not that I don't approve. Nothing would make me happier to see you happy. It's just that this is not a game. I don't want to see either of you to get hurt."
"I know this is not a game, Gabrielle. So far Eponin has done nothing to even let me know that she likes me."
"If you're serious about it, you'll have to be the one to make the first move. Eponin is too much like Xena and would never do anything that is seen as romantic."
"What sort of things will I have to do?"
"Look, let's just leave it for tonight, okay. We'll talk about it more in the morning. What I want to know is what weapon you're going to train with?"
"I thought maybe the staff, just like you."
"Excellent choice and Eponin is the best teacher."
Lila smirked and replied, "That's what I'm hoping for."
"Lila. I didn't mean like that."
Lila smiled. "I know Gab, but I love teasing you. I think I might turn in for the night."
"Just one more thing, Lila. While you are in the village, you will be in the company of the Royal Guard everywhere you go. Is that understood?"
"But, but," Lila stammered.
"Lila, as an Amazon Princess, it is customary for the Guard to follow you at all times."
"Alright, but I don't have to like it," She mumbled.
The two sisters made their way back to Lila's hut and they said goodnight to each other. Gabrielle then went to her hut and had one of the guards go tell Xena that she was retiring for the night.
Joxer had left the dining hut shortly after Ephiny and Solari, which left Eponin and Xena alone. Normally when the two women were alone, they could get up to all sorts of mischief, but not tonight after having consumed a large amount of Amazon ale, they were even more dangerous.
"How's about we head down to the field and play 'shoot the apple off your head?" Eponin challenged.
"Now you know as well as I do Ep, that you're drunk and there's no way you'd be able to catch anything," Xena slurred back.
"I AM NOT!" Eponin shouted trying to stand up and not succeeding.
"Yes, you are. You can't even stand up," Xena retorted.
"Well, can you stand? I bet you can't." Eponin challenged.
Eponin had managed to pull herself somewhat upright and was swaying slightly.
"No problem," Xena answered as she rose to her feet unsteadily.
"Hmpf. Is there anything you can't do?"
"I have many skills," Xena deadpanned with a smirk. "Come on, I believe we have a game to play."
"You're on oh many skills Warrior Princess."
The two women locked arms and headed down for the field.
The Royal Guard had gone to the dining hut in search of Xena, but found it empty. She had no idea where to look and was not looking forward to the prospect of returning to the Queen with the news that she couldn't find Xena.
She knocked softly on the door. "My Queen, it is Ruth, your Guard."
"Come in," Gabrielle replied.
One of her guards, Ruth, opened the door and bowed slightly. "My Queen, I am unable to find Xena. She was not in the dining hut."
"What do you mean she wasn't there?" Gabrielle questioned a little hotly.
"My Queen, I have questioned some sisters and I believe that they have had a fair amount of ale and Xena left with Eponin."
"Oh no, where on earth could they have gone?"
The adventures of the two warriors were legendary in the Amazon Nation.
"Come on then Ruth, I think we'll need the help of Ephiny to find those two."
"Yes, my Queen," replied Ruth as they headed off to Ephiny's hut.
Ephiny's light was out, and she hated to disturb her reagent, but this was a matter that had to be dealt with by the two of them. She knocked loudly on the door.
A slightly annoyed Ephiny answered the door followed by Solari.
"Gabrielle, what's wrong?"
"Do either of you know where Xena and Eponin might be?"
"No, why?"
"Well it seems that the guards are unable to find Xena and it seems that our warriors have both consumed a fair amount of ale." Gabrielle folded her arms and rolled her eyes.
"Oh no, Gabrielle. I didn't think Eponin was going to drink so much tonight."
"Ephiny, what do you suppose they're up to this time?"
"I don't know, Gabrielle, but if I know them, it won't be pretty. Come on, we'd better go look for them. I don't think we'll need anyone else to help. They couldn't have gone too far."
"I hope you're right, Eph. Remember the last time, they got drunk together."
"Ugh, don't remind me. Let's hurry."
With that the two of them rushed out with Ruth in tow.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"I told you that you wouldn't be able to aim straight cause you're drunk," Eponin grumbled.

"I couldn't aim it because you kept moving all over the place," Xena spat back at her.

"I wasn't moving. I was perfectly still. Everything was spinning because you're drunk."

The two warriors had somehow made their way to the healer's hut and barged in without knocking, both holding each other up and blood running down Eponin's face.

"What on earth possessed the two of you to try and shoot arrows at each other in the state you're in I'll never know," Analia stated as she stitched Eponin's ear. Xena had miscalculated when shooting for Eponin's head and the arrow had managed to take the tip of Eponin's ear off.

"As I told my 'friend' over there, I am not drunk and she shouldn't have kept moving," Eponin retorted.

"And I told you that you're drunk," Xena growled. The warrior was not without injury as well. Analia's assistant was attending to the many nicks that Xena had on her upper arms.

Ephiny, Gabrielle and Ruth were just heading towards the field when an Amazon came running towards them.
Bowing she said, "My Queen, Regent. Xena and Eponin are in with the healer."

"Oh Eph, what on earth have they done to each other this time?"

"Come on Gabrielle, there's two warrior's who are in need of a good talking too!"

Xena and Eponin were still arguing when the door flew open and there stood two very angry Queens.

"Oops," Xena mumbled, "Someone's in trouble." She looked at Eponin.

"I wouldn't be worried about me if I were you. I think you're going to get an ear bashing as well."

Ephiny spoke first, "Analia what have they done this time?"

"Well Regent, they decided that firing arrows at each other would make for an interesting contest and as you can see, Eponin here ended up on the wrong end of one too many arrows."

"Eph, I told her that she doesn't aim straight so it was her fault."

"And I told you Ep, you're supposed to stay still and not move," Xena countered.

The two were about to engage in another round of blame when Gabrielle held up her hands.

"Enough. I am disappointed in the both of you. Xena, what on earth do you think you were doing?"

"Well, Brie..."

"And you Ep?" Ephiny poked her finger at Eponin's chest. "I would have thought the last time we were here and the trouble the two of you caused would have taught you a lesson."

"Well Gabr…"

Gabrielle quickly cut her off.

"Just be quiet. I don't want to hear it."

Gabrielle started to pace back and forth mumbling under her breath. She stopped and faced the two warriors.

"I just don't know what I'm going to do with the two of you. It seems that we can't leave the two of you alone for a minute when there's ale around. From now until further notice, the two of you are banned from drinking Amazon ale."

"Brie?"

"Xena, I wouldn't say another word if I were you. I am so mad at you right now, that you're lucky you're not sharing Joxer's hut tonight."

Eponin was having her own trouble with Ephiny. "Eph, please, I promise to be good. I need a little ale every night. You know that."

"Eponin, if you think I was mad at you the last time you pulled this stunt, you were mistaken. I am way passed mad."

Finishing off the bandaging of Eponin's ear Analia said, "There you go Eponin. Keep the wound clean and come back tomorrow to have the dressing changed."

"Alright, Eponin. It's time for you to go to bed." Ephiny and Solari grabbed Eponin around the waist and helped her walk.

"Aw, Eph."

Xena started laughing at Ephiny's statement.

"I wouldn't be laughing just yet Xena. You've still got one very angry bard to contend with," Eponin shouted as she walked out the door.

Xena stopped laughing quickly as she looked around to see one very angry bard.

"Brie, I'm sorry. I was just so happy to be accepted and well when Eponin had the ale brought out, I just couldn't resist. You know how it is."

Gabrielle's face softened and she said, "I know love, but you really have to contain yourself because one of these days you and Eponin are really going to hurt yourselves. Come on, let's get you back to the hut. You're going to have one Tartarus of a hangover in the morning."

"I don't think I'll have to wait until morning. My head is starting to hurt already," grumbled one unhappy Warrior Princess.

Gabrielle addressed the healer. "Thank you for fixing up these two misfits, Analia. I will make sure they keep out of trouble for a while."

"It was really no trouble at all, my Queen."

Gabrielle and Xena left and headed back to their hut. As soon as Gabrielle got Xena onto the bed, she fell asleep. She managed to get the warrior's leathers and boots off and under the covers. She then crawled in beside Xena and pulled her into an embrace.

She kissed the sleeping woman on the forehead and whispered, "You are going to be one sore and sorry warrior in the morning. Sleep well, my love."
