  • Ahh, the Holiday season... Time for...StReSS... ;-) It's been hectic for us over the last week, and that looks to continue until New Years.  Updates will be a bit sporadic for another week or so.

  • A new Top-25 finds a bard with back-to-back #1s... As the clock strikes Midnight and we all stumble along into 2007, The Athenaeum will be hard at work on the Top-100 Most Read Tales For 2006. Who will find themselves in the top spot? Will it be Dabkey or Weebod with a ton of appearances on our Top-25? RJ Nolan who always grabs a huge number of reads all at once? Or perhaps Ambrosia or Mary Griggs with recent triple #1 tales? Could it be some other bard that made a big splash on our Top-25 list? Or might it be some dark horse that unexpectedly grabs the crown by getting a stready modest number of reads all year? Hmmm... Don't ask us yet, we've not even looked at totals so far. Really. Honest. *g*

The Edge of Nowhere By Annemaart (X:WP, 336 Pages)

Compensation By S. Anne Gardner (Original / Uber - Modern, 153 Pages)
Oh My God is the first thing that comes to mind. The emotion flew off the pages and even I got choked up on several parts. It was raw. It was emotional. It was nothing short of spectacular. Miss Gardner certainly knows how to write a novel filled with pain and beauty and still come to a conclusion of happy tears. It was a bitter sweet story that I shall keep in my own personal archive for later re-reading. Thanks for sharing this wonderful story. - Waking the Dream - Dec-15-2006

XLB - You ROCK! Another great work of art. Possibly the best darn bard in the Xenaverse... Pick any one of XLB's stories and prepare to laugh, cry and get a little hot under the collar. Bravo you inspire me. Keep your creative juices flowing - always;-) - anex - Dec-13-2006
Business Trip By Lady J (Original / Uber - Modern, 233 Pages)
[contains spoilers] I had been waiting for this story to be finished and to my surprise it is finished. I have one thing to say about Business Trip......it was worth the wait. Even though I would have loved the happily ever after type of ending, Lady J, you ended it with a realism of everyday life. Wonderful job. - Vickey - Dec-13-2006
Hearts, Flowers, and Snickerdoodles By Mavis Applewater (Original / Uber - Modern, 38 Pages)

Cherish By Ambrosia (Original / Uber - Modern, 356 Pages)
This story just keeps getting smarter and the cast of characters become even more endearing with each new chapter. So very happy to see this story continued. The love relationship, careful and tender in nature, is bound to be an eye opening experience for anyone who reads it. And knowing the story is still in progress and many things yet to be resolved, keeps me checking this sites 'What's New' section on a daily basis! - dez - Dec-12-2006

    I, Conqueror By Susanne M. Beck (Sword'n'Quill) (Original / Uber - Ancient, 156 Pages)

Deus ex Machina By K. Alexander (Original / Uber - Modern, 153 Pages)
Riveting and engaging. It is tightly written and well-paced. The character development is presented in dialogue and actions, not in lame expository text found throughout some lesser fiction stories. This is quickly becoming a story I'll remember, on par with some great stories like: "Surfacing" and "Persistence of Memory", "The Nanoverse Series", and "The Growing". Highly recommended! - a fan - Dec-10-2006
Blood and Honor By Windstar and Zee (Original / Uber - Ancient, 472 Pages)

The Official Guide to Rescuing and Maintaining Damsels in Distress By K. Alexander (Original / Uber - Ancient, 132 Pages)
i think i'd have to call this one 'wonderfully odd' rather than terribly... the polar opposites of dry matter of fact knight and flights of fancy princess in a prissy mood is none the worse for having been tried before, because this time the pair is in the hands of a writer with a delightfully wicked eye and tone. i enjoyed this one thoroughly. i look forward to more from this author; a view only increased by her latest work. - feral - Dec-10-2006
Deus ex Machina By K. Alexander (Original / Uber - Modern, 153 Pages)

Misplaced People By Devize (Original / Uber - Modern, 306 Pages)
An exciting, unpredictable page-turner. Although many authors succeed in creating action-packed stories, this author is able to add a level of realism and humanity to the characters few authors can accomplish. - diss_turbed_teddy - Dec-07-2006
Dakota's Way By Robin Hicks (Original / Uber - Modern, 168 Pages)
I really enjoyed this book. Great characters and story telling. The only fault that I found with this book is, it left me wanting more. I do hope to hear more from this author. - Candice - Dec-07-2006

And Playing the Role of Herself... By dabkey (Original / Uber - Modern, 243 Pages)
I've been reading a lot of stories recently, but this is still my absolutely favorite: a wonderful original story, with great characters and a lot of great dialogues. And guess what? This is a different kind of "ALT". It's hard to believe it's a short story because it has so much character, love, and passion. I hope there is a sequel. - Blue - Dec-05-2006
Intuition By KM (Original / Uber - Modern, 247 Pages)
I have followed this story from the first of the series. As always it was fantastic. Compelling host of characters. Had me hooked on the edge of my seat. I hope that there will be more on my favorite ladies. Jess and Robin. - Christi - Dec-05-2006

Blood and Honor By Windstar and Zee (Original / Uber - Ancient, 472 Pages)
From reading previous works by these two authors, I felt that Windstar's strengths are in writing epic tales while Zee's are in insightful observations in creating humor and depth to the characters. The combination of writing styles of Windstar and Zee create an absolutely brilliant story filled with action, anti-heroes, relationships, and redemption. I hope to read other joint endeavors by these two authors. - diss_turbed_teddy - Dec-05-2006

Blood and Honor By Windstar and Zee (Original / Uber - Ancient, 472 Pages)
I was looking for a story to read and picked this one solely because (I'm embarrassed to admit) of the title. Wow did I get lucky! This is one of the most engrossing tales I have read in a very long time. It is extremely well written, and the depth and richness of the characters and the world they live in is extraordinary. The authors are to be congratulated...and encouraged to publish this gem asap! - Chris - Dec-05-2006
When in Rome By Redhawk (Original / Uber - Ancient, 5 Pages)
This is one of my favorites. I'm not into "short" stories as a rule, but this one conveys so much in just 5 pages. You really to feel like you are there...and how I wish I was there as this story is oh so seductive and very sexy! You'll read it in five minutes, and think about it for hours. Thanks Jordan! - Chris - Dec-04-2006

An amazing read, one I would recommend to anyone. - alecto - Dec-04-2006
Ares' Gift By Lena (X:WP, 68 Pages)
Definitely worth the read - this story in particular and its sequels. The plot is very intriguing and definitely *not* one of the ones too frequently undertaken, and is handled with the appropriate sincerity. Found it quite believable and utterly enchanting. The characterizations, in some places, were so on target it surprised me. And though it is serious in nature, there are plenty of laughs and much joy along the way. Awesome! - JB - Dec-04-2006
The Return to Unity By Lissa (X:WP, 79 Pages)
After stumbling upon one of this author's other tales, I realised that I'd been missing out on a very talented bard! This tale (and the sequel!) takes FIN and makes it into a beautiful reunion piece that tells the saga of the new life of Xena and Gabrielle, with a few surprises, a bit of suspense, and a lot of love along the way. Definitely worth a read... likely several times over. - JB - Dec-04-2006
A Journey Of Love and Life By Lissa (X:WP, 161 Pages)
Absolutely adore this story. The alternate take on Season 5 is inspired in and of itself, but the growth and metamorphosis of the relationship between Xena and Gabrielle is what captures the reader's attention. And the best part is, though it may not be something you would have imagined, it makes absolutely perfect sense! Highly, highly recommended! - JB - Dec-04-2006

Conflict Of Interests By Weebod (Original / Uber - Modern, 237 Pages)
One of the best Uber's I've read! I just sent the author a little note telling her so and wishing I could be like Elish whe I grow up. ;-) The title on the website reads "conflict of Interest"; however, the story web page, when opened kists the title as ~Sausage Sizzler~ - Dal - Dec-03-2006
Editor's Note: We were just trying to confuse you.  ;-)  Sausage Sizzler was the original title (yes, really), and it wasn't changed when is should have been.  It's now been corrected.

  • The Athenaeum was down for a few hours yesterday. Our web-hosting provider suffered a very large Distributed Denial of Service attack (DDoS), and it looks other sites suffered the same fate as well. Gratefully, the issue was resolved fairly quickly, and everything should be back to normal now.

Here at the Athenaeum we're having all sorts of creative thoughts as to what should be done to the culprits who initiate these kinds of destructive attacks. Make it something simple, yet effective, and a real deterrent to future adolescent punks. What do you all think? We're envisioning them suffering some sort of "accident" that requires immediate critical medical attention and finding the only medical facility of miles around closed because…damn…can you believe it? The network just went down! They suffer a nice, slow, painful...umm...okay maybe we've been watching a bit too much CSI. It was a nice thought though. J

In the Midst of Tribulation By Mary Griggs (Original / Uber - Futuristic, 230 Pages)
Oh that rare breed, the well considered story. This is a tremendously well written tale. It calls for great sensitivity on the part of the author who obviously possesses it in spades. She has also adeptly provided the characters with rare depth for a novella. A lot of effort has been put into the research for this piece and I strongly suspect our author is obsessed with the outdoors - the story is all the more credible for it. That is not to say that every situation is entirely credible (I did find myself wondering when a fuller explanation was going to be given for one or two events) but considering the number of strands to the story, only the pedants amongst us would be critical of that. Nevertheless, this is a fine story with a satisfyingly plausible ending. It gets my highest recommendation - believe me that's rare! - Pam - Nov-22-2006
    Generations - Book 1 By J. A. Zollicoffer (Original / Uber - Futuristic, 212 Pages)

Murasaki Midnight By Nene Adams (Bardwynna) (Original / Uber - Futuristic, 30 Pages)

The Annals of the Queens By Pysta (X:WP, 109 Pages)
Taking a leaf from Annemaart, for my fans: please be patient! The fourth and final part of the Judging of the Queen series is being lovingly labored over, and I promise I will bring it to a worthy end! It is more convoluted than the others, but it will be well worth the wait. X and G are keeping my wordsmithing sharp - and they have high standards! Would I could forego my day job and just write, write, write! - Pysta - Nov-20-2006

I printed that story out a while ago and finally found some time to sit back and enjoy a good werewolve story - and that one is certainly one of the best I've read so far. The Author did an incredible job with that story and I highly recommend it. - querdenker69 - Nov-20-2006
Path of Thorns By Annemaart (X:WP, 178 Pages)
Yes, annoying writer barging in on her own feedback again . Sorry, but thought this would be a good platform. I've been getting some emails as of late inquiring about whether or not Path is going to get finished. The simple answer to this is: yes, of course it will be. I've never not finished a story and this definitely won't be the first. So no worries. My own site is updated more frequently and you can also join my yahoogroup (AnnemaartsStoryUpdates) which is updated even more frequently (I try to send a small piece out once a week). So, all I'm saying is, bear with me, I know it's been a long wait for this story to get finished, but I assure it will be and I'm doing my best to make it worth the wait ;). - Annemaart - Nov-20-2006

Better Than Ruling the World By Xena's Little Bitch (X:WP, 22 Pages)
All of Goldman's work will pluck your heartstrings, but I particularly like this delightfully sweet (don't think saccharine) and sprightly story. Gabrielle and Xena meet before Xena's terrific past and love steers them toward a different future. It'll make you sigh - the high seas of youth. - 3creeks - Nov-17-2006

Coup de Grace By Vivian Darkbloom (Original / Uber - Modern, 355 Pages)
Darkbloom has imagined a hauntingly vivid Janice and Mel epic. Some of the best writing ever, especially if you like a bit of literature with your fanfic. This story, the whole series, will leave you bewitched by its grandeur and simplicity because as Grabrielle says, in a back story interlude, what really mattered was that she loved and was loved. Believe me, Vivian will break your heart wide open! - 3creeks - Nov-16-2006

I love this story so much. Where can I buy the book? I believe this story is one of Ms. Gardner's best. I come in here and read it often. I give it the highest score a story can be given. I feel this way about all of S. Anne Gardner's stories and poetry. She is an amazing and very gifted writer. First By Kim Pritekel (Original / Uber - Modern, 247 Pages)
Well written with a good pace. Kim is very good at writing characters you will care about. The flashback scenes were seamless, best I've seen a writer write, actually. You definitely feel as if you've been on the journey along with the protagonist when you are done. Great read and highly recommended. - A fan - Nov-05-2006
Waterfalls, Rainbows and Secrets By Dragonjuls (JM Dragon) (Original / Uber - Modern, 214 Pages)
If you want to read something a little more challenging than a single story arc, try this. It might make the brain cells ache with some of the names-regardless you'll find it totally engrossing. A mix of ancient and modern with the odd twist this bard is noted for. Give it a try you won't be disappointed. - ConquerorX - Nov-05-2006
Thoughtful Gift (A) By Kudara (Morrowind - Ancient, 17 Pages)
Awesome, and a wonderful genre to write in as well. I wonder, would anyone be interested in a tale set in Oblivion's universe? I have a nice one percolating about a wood elf and a dark elf... I might just have to submit a tale myself :) Great story, thanks for sharing! - -Aerows- - Nov-04-2006
Editor's Note: We're betting that their are more then a few people interested in such a tale...

I was really enjoying this story on a rainy Sunday afternoon, when, smack I hit the wall of the unfinished. I could've had a V8. I know I should have checked but it has been poted for a while. The way it is left is just cruel and increases my resolve not to read unfinished stories. - gayzer - Nov-02-2006

  • And now for something waaaay off topic and scary on Halloween.... How about a clip from YouTube of a Romanian music video from the group O-Zone and their song Dragostea Din Tei? Oh...it's better known as the "Numa Numa" dance. If you've watched the video, you probably think...so what? But wait! It's a freaky phenomena on YouTube. There are something like seven THOUSAND videos of people doing their own version of the Numa Numa dance (including the first one that's just to bad to link to). Go ahead and watch a few...if your dare! Some are actually kinda funny (alcohol may help)...ahh...but now you've fallen for the Halloween part of this… The song is a curse. Once you hear it a few times you will not be able to get it out of your head!

    We know.

    We've been cursed.

    Happy Halloween <EG>

House of Lao By Xena's Little Bitch (X:WP, 43 Pages)
I've read everything else by Julia Goldman but for some reason I had avoided this one because I thought it was purely a Xena/ Lao Ma centric story - and goodness we all need a little Gabrielle in our lives - but I was so wrong. I promise you this - if you read this story your life will be better. Julia Goldman is one of the greatest bards in the 'verse. Every word, ever sentence is sublimely crafted. She knows Xena and Gabrielle better than they know themselves, which is why she can so successfully transpose their stories or alter their experiences. Breathtaking. - Vee - Oct-17-2006
Cooking on High By Creme Brulee (Original / Uber - Modern, 233 Pages)
I read this a while back and really enjoyed it. I re-read when I saw the recent recommendation and remembered why I like it so much. The characters both French & Fry and the supporting cast are quirky and fun or odd perhaps mean. The dialogue is witty and the romance unfolds over time which to me makes for a better story. - Kali - Oct-17-2006

Afraid of the Dark By Darkenedkarma (Original / Uber - Modern, 46 Pages)
This is a highly imaginitive story that had me enthralled during the entire reading. It had mystery, suspense and romance, but not too much. I loved it and I know anyone who reads it will too. - reads_a-lot - Oct-10-2006

Business Trip By Lady J (Original / Uber - Modern, 233 Pages)
Lady J, what a wonderful and powerful story. I have been waiting for you to complete Business Trip before I read it. I couldn't put it down. You have built a realistic day to day world and peopled it with 3d characters. By the end I felt as if I knew everyone personally. The plot was well thought out and the humor was amazing. I laughed out loud more than once. Thank you so much for sharing your amazing talent. - Sarah - Oct-09-2006
Blood and Honor By Windstar and Zee (Original / Uber - Ancient, 305 Pages)
I absolutely love this story!! I can't wait for the last chapter! I hope it is soon!!!! - DJB - Oct-08-2006
Untitled: The Story of Me By Advocate (Original / Uber - Modern, 88 Pages)
WOW!! What a brillant dazzling out of this world talented human author (bard). I hope you find it in your funny and sparkling heart to write more and more. Oh YEAH! I enjoyed it to say the least. - vampireslayer2 - Oct-07-2006
    Apocalypse: Book 2 - Inferno By Brigit M. Morgan (X:WP, 273 Pages)
Brigit Morgan's Apocalypse series is absolutely, mind-blowingly brilliant. Masterfully written, plotted, and executed, this series is one of the best works of fiction I've read in any fandom, any genre. Period. - leavethesky - Oct-07-2006
Fearful is the Night By L. Crystal Michallet-Romero (Original / Uber - Modern, 9 Pages)
Oh my, someone should really put a warning not to read this at work! LOL While this story held elements that were frightening and had my heart racing; the imagery gave it an even balance. Even though I found myself blushing at the very erotic nature of this tale, it didn't stop me once from reading it at work, lol. I am going to highly recommend that this story be read at least once, twice or more before and after Halloween!! Excellent work, Crystal! - Arati - Oct-06-2006
Coup de Grace By Vivian Darkbloom (Original / Uber - Modern, 261 Pages)
Not just the best Mel/Janice or one of the best Xena fics, but some of the best writing online or off. Period. Beautifully written, perfect characterization and a sweeping, epic story that spans millenia, this is it. And it just gets better if you read it with Darkbloom's other Mel/Janice fic because they are all entertwined. - leavethesky - Oct-06-2006

And A Nightingale... By The Fallen (Xena: Janice and Mel - 1900-1960, 8 Pages)
One of the bravest Xena fanfictions I have ever read. Tough to absorb, yet very powerful and plausible. I have yet to read anything else that comes close to shocking me as much as this did. But, do avoid it if you believe 110% in the X/G relationship. It may upset you. - Kez - Oct-05-2006
Stranger in a Strange Time By Red Hope (Xena: Janice and Mel - Ancient, 8 Pages)
Please keep this one going. Promises to be a great ride! - Kez - Oct-05-2006
Sharon's Rose By Gayle Baker (X:WP, 124 Pages)
Gayle Baker (Irish Gayle) was an exceptional author and sadly passed away on September 20, 2006. "Sharon's Rose" was her only attempt at a Xena story. It is a wonderfully poetic, and tenderly written story that portrays the sweet love and devotion betwen two sisters. - Anonymous - Oct-04-2006
Fearful is the Night By L. Crystal Michallet-Romero (Original / Uber - Modern, 9 Pages)
Once again Crystal has done it! She has created a brand new tale that begs for a sequel!!! I've been following her writing from the beginning and with each new story she just keeps getting better and better. This is a wonderful Halloween story that is sure to get many looking over their shoulder on a cold winter night. Brava, Crystal!!! Keep them coming! - E. - Oct-04-2006

Untitled: The Story of Me By Advocate (Original / Uber - Modern, 88 Pages)
A true classic in every sense of the word. You can truly see Lucy and Renee playing these roles. It is hilarious, honestly... if you don't laugh out loud reading this you must be dead. Oh, how I wish there were more stories as original and brilliant as this one. - Kez - Oct-04-2006

Iron Rose Bleeding By Anne Azel (Original / Uber - Futuristic, 97 Pages)
What a fine story. I bought the characters right away and their distinctive personalities were refreshing. This is one of those stories that could be really depressing because of the issues it presents. Instead it was interesting and hopeful. One problem: I want more of this story. - Krystin - Sep-29-2006
Passion's Bright Fury By Radclyffe (Original / Uber - Modern, 139 Pages)
I have to admit, I've never been a big fan of Radclyffe's work, finding her stories to be a tad bit boring, but this story blew me away. I was captivated from the start and thoroughly enjoyed it until the end. I just do yourself a favour and read it! - Milo - Sep-29-2006
