    Loved the story! hope there's a sequel!! - Krysta - Mar-26-2007
All That Matters By S X Meagher (Original / Uber - Modern, 658 Pages)
Unlike the last recommendation, this story ranks right up there as my all time favourite, so I'm pleading with S X Meagher - please write a sequel! Anyone who's read this story is surely longing to see where these two wonderful women are going with their relationship. It feels like they've just got started (which they have) and there's so much more that could be told by Ms Meagher on their behalf. Do us all a favour S X and bring on the sequel. I bet the day it hits the site, it rockets to number one on the readers list. At least tell us your thinking about it. - Pam, England - Mar-26-2007

I loved it! You gotta read it! The title says it all!!! - Nadine from Germany - Mar-26-2007
Hunger By Lori A. Meyers (X:WP, 20 Pages)
This is one of the better Xena stories out there. The author decided to tell a story with a contrasting plot as to how Xena and Gabrielle met taking in the more authentic aspects of the times these women lived in where probably hunger, homelessness and loss was common. Xena chooses to redeem herself through ruin and destitution rather than righting the wrongs of the world or fighting for the greater good - although there is a hint that that's what she might do after she meets Gabrielle, although it's not mentioned, it is my hope that's where the story will lead. Once again as with all of Lori's stories I wished it was longer because I can never get enough of her writing. Suffice it to say - Xena's encounter with Gabrielle and what is revealed later, is very moving. File this away and save it for posterity into the highly recommended classic Xena fan fiction. Long live Xena fan fiction! And long live the author. May she write more unique stories. May the muse be with you, always. - Karon Reiter - Mar-24-2007

The Do-It-Yourself Guide to Bathroom Fixtures, Non-Corporeal Manifestations and You By Aurelia (Original / Uber - Modern, 48 Pages)
Did you say SEQUELS? The thing, you know "the thing" with the toilet and the chicken....trying not to spoil it here. But, my God. That was damn funny. What was even funnier is that I could see myself under the same circumstances doing the same things. The insane things rational ordinary people do when faced with irrational extraordinary situations! THANK YOU! It was delightful! Hopefully you can squeeze another one of these little treasures out of that creative little mind of yours. I will be looking forward to it! - cj - Mar-22-2007

  • Editor's Note: We've a very special request from A. C. Henley today:

I would like to thank everyone who has sent words of encouragement to me during this difficult time in my life. It lifts my spirits immensely to know that so many of you genuinely care about the fate of a near stranger.

It is with great humility then that I ask for some help. I am going to be short this coming month financially. I am putting aside my stubborn pride to make this request, and even now as I write this feel just a tad odd asking all of you for help. Still any help that can be sent will be greatly appreciated.

If anyone wishes to assist me, please email me directly at henleyac@yahoo.com.

Thank you all for your consideration.
    A.C. Henley

Summer of Need By J. W. Heart (Original / Uber - Modern, 17 Pages)
There are several authors whose stories I will reread, J.W. Heart is one of them. I truly enjoy the Trace and Shannon series. The characters are so genuine that it would be a pleasure to meet them in real life. This series is so hilarious that a caution should be made not to eat or drink while reading them. Now that I have cleaned up the soda that shot out my nose and coughed up the sunflower seed, I am more than ready to read what will happen next to Trace, Shannon, Dawg, Syd, JT and the rest of the gang. J.W. that was a not so subtle hint. - Sherry - Mar-19-2007

  • We've a publishing announcment for KG MacGregor today:

I’m excited to announce the release of Sumter Point, a romance available from Bella Books (ISBN 978-1-59493-089-8, $13.85). I’ve been working on this one for a couple of years, and it’s a bit like pushing a teenager out of the nest. I hope you enjoy it.

Audie Pippin is a 24-year-old veterinary technician at the animal shelter in Sumter, Tennessee, a suburb of Nashville. Her carefree life includes friends, marijuana, margaritas, and casual sex—until all of it is jeopardized by her grandmother’s failing health. Beth Hester, 33, is a nurse at the long-term care facility where Audie’s grandmother is admitted after a serious stroke. She’s down to earth and mature, her career and financial investments meticulously planned. Compared to Audie, Beth doesn’t know the meaning of fun.

Through Audie’s daily visits, they forge a friendship that draws Beth into a celebration of the fun side of life while opening her eyes to innocent, unselfish love. As Audie surrenders her heart to Beth, she begins to distance herself from the reckless habits of her youth. Just as they’re ready to meet in the middle, their future is thrown into doubt by a duty Beth can’t ignore. It all comes to a head on the river at Sumter Point.

Addison Black and The Eye of Bastet By MJ (Original / Uber - Modern, 231 Pages)
I might actually like this one more than Addison and Skyler's first adventure, Black's Magic, because we get to see them working together and kicking ass as agents in the field. Another great story from MJ. Read it, or be flogged with a wet noodle! - Arassar - Mar-09-2007

Marjorie Humboldt: A Revelation in Several Parts By Creme Brulee (Original / Uber - Modern, 111 Pages)
One should read this at least twice to truly appreciate the author's talent. The first time through, learn what happens. On subsequent readings, pay special attention to the portrayal and conveyance of Marjorie's confusion. The writing is just exquisite. Incidentally, this isn.t uber as I understand the definition. No raven tresses or grass green eyes... - jj - Mar-08-2007
Editor's Note: What's an 'uber'? What's original? We at the Athenaeum really wish there was a nice clear definition that could easily be applied to fiction and fan fiction. In the beginning of the Xenaverse, pretty much everything written was Xena fan fiction, or Xena-uber fan fiction. As the above review pointed out, "raven tresses or grass green eyes..." as well as strawberry blond hair and sapphire blue eyes are all classic marks of a Xena-uber.

What about characters that don't have any physical resemblance to X&G but still are clearly identifiable as the X&G archetypes? Take for instance a hard tough brooding DEA agent, with a very dark past she's trying to escape from, and a cute, innocent, inquisitive, talkative hacker who stumbles upon an elaborate multinational conspiracy involving drug money laundering, high-level government officials, and terrorists. The two team up to fight the forces of evil, and end of falling in love along the way… So, is that an uber or is it an all-original work? It depends on how the author writes it of course. So now we find that we're trying to get inside the authors head and determine from where their inspiration came from. Ugh, and all that before my morning tea. ;-) Though it may be easy to tell uber from original on stories written in the last few years, before that it could be more difficult. Consequently we decided many years ago to simply label uber as 'original / uber' meaning original OR uber. I know, long speech for a short answer, but that's the reason we label as we do.

I've lost count of how many times I've read this story. It's been one of my favourites since I first read it a few years ago, and I come back to it often. How it has never reached #1 is beyond me, seriously. It really is a beautiful story. If you haven't read it, you really should. Sequel? Please? :) - Melissa - Mar-06-2007
The Story That Dare Not Speak Its Name By Jillo (Star Trek - Modern, 56 Pages)
Okay, I don't usually like Voyager stories but I do like Shakespeare. Jillo has penned an intelligent, humorous parody of Macbeth. The characters have more depth and are much more interesting than they ever were in the TV series. Excellent story or as Seven would say, acceptable! - 3creeks - Mar-06-2007

A thoroughly disturbing story but gripping as few others. Great angst and drama, not a light read. I think this is a story that totally polarizes because the ending is brutal with one character loosing all of herself in the other and still thinking it is her fault while basically evil triumphs. No happy puppies in this one :-). - Anonymous - Mar-04-2007

Editor's Note: And the answer to this one is: Resa by Journs.

I'm looking for a fic in which Gabrielle leaves Xena for Aphrodite. It begins in the forest and Gabrielle catches Xena involved in a tryst with someone else. Aphrodite comes to offer comfort and ends up whisking Gabrielle away to her temple. Cupid attempts to tell Aphrodite that she must return Gabrielle to Xena because Xena is her true love. However, Aphrodite is truly smitten and wants Gabrielle for herself. The story is fairly short and ends with Aphrodite returning Gabrielle to Earth or some such. I hope that is sufficient detail to begin a preliminary search. I would greatly appreciate any information you might provide. Thank you in advance.

What Mother Never Told Me By Leslie Ann Miller (Original / Uber - Modern, 97 Pages)
This is a lovely story! Told in the first person, it's well written and imaginative. The characterization is nicely done and the plot well conceived and executed. And, like the description says, it's ultimately a story that fixes FIN - in a really neat way. - Michele - Feb-27-2007
No Kissing By Zuke (Original / Uber - Modern, 5 Pages)
I really liked this little tale. It did what short stories should do and left me wondering about the characters and their past and future lives. Zuke gives you just an inch or two to try and piece together the Truck Driver and the Hooker's obviously pitiful existance when they meet on a cold Christmas Eve in the middle of nowhere. Can these two lost souls give each other the solace they both clearly need? I hope Zuke will continue this tale so we have the opportunity to find out. - Sai - Feb-27-2007

If this story was indeed written in '97 the author was remarkably prescient in anticipating several things that later happened in the series. They include the following; Gabrielle's loss of her blood innocence, her transformation to a skilled warrior, and her eerie description of preparing Xena's body for burial that, of course, later happens in the episode Friend In Need. I was telling someone about a story, but couldn't remember much except the plot. I thought perhaps the Athenaeum readers could help me out. I tried searching but that was hopeless. (they probably have names like Alex or Sam as they seem to be the most popular after X&G. (I don't want to write about the ending to keep it a surprise for those who haven't read it.)

There is a wonderful short story from Halloween about 2 twin lesbians & one has a party that the other comes to her university town to attend. The sister from away is tasked with getting a friend of her sister's to scream from the telling of a horror story. I think the friend is an English professor & is not easily scared. The sister's friend & the twin from away have never met. Poor timing has kept them apart over a number of years.

I would give the author a handshake if I could. The descriptions within hold more realism than I've come to expect from others in the same genre. Too bad it is so short. The story at its current stage would have been a great premise for a longer story. - Kayla - Feb-20-2007

Thank goodness I did click on the link! :) And I couldn't agree more with A.C. Henley... This story made me escape my own dramas for some time, and took me away on a wonderful journey instead. This author is exceptional. Clearly, writing is not a hobby, but a craft. I look forward to reading much more of this story. Thank you. Deus ex Machina By K. Alexander (Original / Uber - Modern, 235 Pages)
From the first chapter of this story I was kept on my toes, wondering what turn it could possibly take next! The first half is a breathless action-packed blur, and the second intriguing and no less thrilling for the slower pace. The main characters are flawed and hopeful, and likeable for the honesty that comes through in their actions and behavior rather than what it is they say. All in all a tense and clever read. Thanks, k alexander, for a brutally tender story! - Anon - Feb-11-2007

Thanks for suggesting to read this wonderful story. I have to say, the dialogue was pure, so pure in part ten, that all of a sudden I found myself crying, I was shocked at myself..The exchange between Gabrielle and Xena..whew. Ashes & Light By Inkubator (Original / Uber - Modern, 300 Pages)
This is not for Ashes and Light but for offerings Inkubator edits, I think. Inkubator.s site hosts a series called Voyages of Diana. To get a taste of this series, try reading A Letter Home or Personal Log. If you like those, go back and start the series with the introduction. It is the least easy to read but important for the following stories. The last story in the series, Liberation, is creepy in spots so approach with caution. I wish there were more stories as there are many questions still unresolved.

This is a page-turner, a can't put down kind of read. Thank you for a well-written story. I loved the river analogy toward the end, and the quick paced, written action of the entire first part of the story (on the run). A 'bonnet' or two showed up, along with an occasional policing verb that made me grin.:) A simply fantastic read. - Anonymous - Feb-08-2007

Soulmates on a Battlestar By AJ Marks (Battlestar Galactica - Futuristic, 89 Pages)
Loved reading this story! It is set in the old Battlestar universe, NOT quite the version showing on American TV right now February 2007 but close enough. It's a solid story, a little light in areas but an easy and enjoyable read. I loved imagining about Rhea and Tina and their comrades in arms against the ever pervasive and eradicable cyclons!
HINT: Make sure you read Part2 first, then Part3 and only after then to read Part1: of the Earth At Last Series .. the listing is slightly out of sequence. This new sequence is done in the order of events taking place within this stories timeline. Have a frackin' good time ;) - Dg - Feb-06-2007

However it came to my attention again when it appeared in the top 100 for 2006 and I decided to give it a go and boy I wasn't disappointed. It's a very exciting read, with a quick pace and a very well written plot. Nice idea K Alexander. I also liked your other tale about Damsels in Distress. Be Omen To Me And Oracle By romansilence (Stargate SG-1 - Futuristic, 37 Pages)
Ihave to say this is a good sequel. Good flow and well written but I would have loved to have seen some more interaction with Cassie, and Liz especially after Janet arriving with her new orders and how they were flowing. I do hope there is an another sequel, for many storylines are left opened. Good work and would definitely recommend all of your stories. - wmnwholves - Feb-04-2007
In An Age Before By Phantom Bard (Lord Of The Rings - Ancient, 855 Pages)
What a fantastic find! I'm only about 20 parts into this story - but I wanted to say how much I enjoy it. The author does a fantastic job telling the tale of Helluin in the style of Tolkien's own works. If you're not very experienced in all things Tolkien (like myself), I recommend keeping the TolkienWiki (http://www.thetolkienwiki.org/) handy. It helped me with the first few parts, and now that I've gotten a better grasp on some of the terms, I can't keep away. - Jen - Feb-04-2007
I Found My Heart in San Francisco Book 1: Awakenings By S X Meagher (Original / Uber - Modern, 437 Pages)

Well, these two obviously found it and it was a delicate pleasure of following them. I really really absolutely love this story and I am so happy that this was just the first of many books to come. So if you?re looking for a very sweet and touching story of true love between two people don?t miss this one. It will make your day (or your week...). And S X Meagher, you?re one great talent of a writer. Please, don?t stop! - Ines - Feb-04-2007

I’m happy to announce the return of The House on Sandstone, now available from Bella Books (www.bellabooks.com). Thanks to everyone who bought the first edition. This one has only minor changes from the earlier version, but it has a cool cover by Steph. Here’s the synopsis, and please stop by to check out what else is in the works at www.kgmacgregor.com.

Twenty-five years ago, Carly Griffin left her home town of Leland, Kentucky – sure that it held nothing for her future. Now weary of living overseas for one consulting project after another, she’s glad to have two months back home to relax with her aging parents.

When she catches a glimpse of her high school friend Justine in the doorway of her elegant home, Carly is surprised by the warm, familiar feelings that the image stirs within her.

Justine Hall made different life choices, returning to Leland after college to marry and raise two children. Now divorced, she walks a fine line between sanity and hell, struggling to reconcile the sexuality she can no longer deny with the expectations of motherhood and mores in a small town. Could these two women possibly have anything in common after all these years?

I read a great deal of fanfic, almost as a hobby. I gain a broad perspective on this kind of work and i've come to realise there is a huge range of quality as well as general content. Coming upon this story was nothing special, i was browsing and it looked intriguing. I have read a piece about an alternative life initiated by 'Remember Nothing' but compared to this it was dust in the wind. This piece is by far the most intriguing, well-paced, exciting and also heart wrenching piece of fanfiction i have read to date. And that's out of A LOT of stories!! I have no doubt that if this was a published piece of writing, available to buy, it would almost certainly be on the best-seler list. All I can say is thankyou, you managed to stop me in my tracks and i couldn't get this out of my head for days. Magnificent. - Amy - Jan-28-2007

It's an uber. Gab's character is working on a research team for the summer and Xena's character (who I think is named Rose) is managing the team. Gab's character discovers that 'Rose' has to have surgery and has no one to care for her so she volunteers for the job.

I've been searching for a story that I read over a year ago and really enjoyed. I remember bits and pieces, but cannot remember character names. The story was about a girl who owns a pet shop. She falls for a girl who still lives with her parents. I vaguely remember her parents owning a dog, I think a dachsund. Yes, you guessed it - that's how they met. I believe the story was set in a large city, maybe NY, because I recall them skating in a park (possibly Central Park). Not much to go on, is it? Sorry! Any help you could provide would be appreciated. Thank you!

Fire Within By Anita Louise (Original / Uber - Modern, 258 Pages)
I.ve just finished reading "Fire Within." This adventure has been amazing. It was written so well, I felt everything. Every step Skylar and Bobie took, so did I. I felt like I was in Springfield, what an amazing town, and the people, wow, so real. Anita wove, adventure, romance, compassion, the supernatural, so many fantastic people each brought out wonderfully. There is so much this story entails, so many moments where one may tremble, sit on the edge of their chair, biting their fingernails, feeling every emotion, and loving it. The second Skylar Richmond stepped off the plane, after it landed at the airport in Springfield, one could sense a spark had begun. I have looked forward to another of Anita Louise.s great stories. I'm looking for a story and I can't for the life of me remember the name. The plot is about a singing duo who had been friends since they were kids. They are in love with one another but they haven't told each other yet. One day the Gabby like character has an accident and loses her memory. There is actually two stories one is the sequel which I think talks about their past. If you could help me I would really appreciate it.

Editor's Note: We've heard from the 'verse (again)...and the answer is: So Close, So Far by Dimples.  That tale has been published and is no longer available online.  Thanks to everyone who e-mailed us with this latest title.

  • Special Request: Every two or three weeks someone e-mails us with a question about a story that they just can't remember the title or author of.  Normally we can point them to the correct tale, but occasionally we're stumped.  From now on when we can't help someone, we're going to ask for a bit of help ourselves.  We'll post the requests here, and if you know the answer, please let us know so we can pass the info along.

Do you know the title or author of this tale?

It's an ancient times one starting off with the Xena type character on the run, hungry, thirsty and comes across a group in the forest to try to get some food. Little do they know they're on the wrong land and are hunted down as thieves, raiders, bad guys..you get my drift. and the Xena-type character actually loses as duel to the princess (the Gabrielle character) but rather than being thrown in the dungeon the xena-character is taken into the castle where Gabrielle tries to tech trust, but all xena wants to do is to get away and gain her freedom.

Editor's Note: We've heard from the 'verse...and the answer is: Freedom's Heart by Amber.  We'll link to the tale on Wednesday's update.  Thanks to everyone who e-mailed us with the title.
